Production of carbon reinforced concrete components by shotcreting – technology development The two geometrically curved CUBE‐TWIST shells, each 24 meters long, made of carbon concrete, have been produced by using shotcrete. Based on experiences in the application of textile‐/carbon concrete for reinforcing concrete components, various practical construction issues have been tested in trials. The goal of the investigations was to develop a procedure for the production of TWIST components under site conditions. It was important to link the structural boundary conditions and optimal visible concrete quality with practical constructibility. The contribution describes, among other things, investigations into the spraying of massive beams, the marking out of carbon reinforcement on the shell surface or the production of a scale prototype at 1:1. Tests for the consistency of the shotcrete used and the embedding of carbon meshes in the shotcrete are described more in detail. Furthermore, the contribution describes the post‐treatment of the TWIST weather shell by fogging the fresh concrete surface on site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTELLECT , *MEDICAL informatics , *TECHNOLOGY - Abstract
This is a commentary on Professor Giere's essay 'Verpasste Chancen. Nachdenken über Fehlentwicklungen der Medizinischen Informatik [Missed opportunities. Reflections on misdevelopments in medical informatics]'. The author addresses some of the issues discussed in the 'missed opportunities' and comments on them in six commentaries. In addition, he seeks to describe the period of the 1970s, a time when medical informatics was established as a new field, with Wolfgang Giere as one of its pioneers. After reading the 'missed opportunities', one may ask: Were there mainly misdevelopments during the time described, were there only 'missed opportunities'? This impression would by no means be correct from the author's point of view. It would have been desirable that further progress could have been made in the projects described by Wolfgang Giere – if this was realistically possible given the state of knowledge and the organizational and technical possibilities at that time. Though there was also important, successful work and considerable progress during that period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New technologies usually have potential, but their mode of action and long-term consequences are not always immediately apparent. This challenge can be met in an interdisciplinary way with approaches that integrate different perspectives. Young scientists have come together to work on meeting this challenge from an interdisciplinary perspective in the Young Forum of Technical Sciences: Technology that people really want. The aim is to support user-centred technology development based on interdisciplinary methods. Engineering, law, social sciences and the humanities can work together to shape technical developments in a way that leads to a form of technology that is adapted to the needs of society. Interdisciplinarity in research and development means mutual permeation of disciplines instead of mere coexistence. The aim is to promote interdisciplinary research groups and projects and to develop common methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ART & craft debate , *YOUNG adults , *EDUCATION , *SPHERES , *TECHNICAL education , *GENERAL education , *HUMAN beings , *SPECIES , *VOCATIONAL education - Abstract
This contribution on the subject of craft (Werken) explores which kind of education children and young people need in an era of incomprehensible expansion of technology. While boundaries between humans and technology are and have been apparent, technology is more and more becoming a sphere lacking clear-cut boundaries. If one imagines the world in Cartesian terms, res extensa and res cogitans are affected; man and technology become more and more entangled in each other. The attempted response to the necessary educational effort in this paper has five considerations. Firstly, we track down the concept of reality. Secondly, we point out the creative urge which is unique to the human species. Thirdly, we are going to talk about the experience of reliability in a seemingly contingent, chaotic and complex world as a way of giving meaning. Fourthly, we will talk about our reality in the technosphere. And fifthly, we aim to show that it is up to the human being to live in harmony with the world he or she has created. Finally, it will be discussed what can be derived from this by speaking about craft as actual education and in which way this could relate to general technical education [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POSSIBILITY , *LITERATURE , *AUTHORS - Abstract
Psychoanalytic authors often describe virtual encounters as ›disembodied‹. This makes us think of the body as absent in virtual clinical settings and leads us to interpret the choice of virtual settings as a withdrawal from the reality of embodied existence. By drawing on literature and through the examination of a dream from a partly virtual analysis, this essay explores the possibility of feeling close in virtual encounters. Drawing on the theory of José Bleger, I understand the body and technology as a part of the frame. It is essential in my view that we continue to question and broaden our psychoanalytic understanding of the virtual in order to improve our ability to listen and dream in this novel setting. China and Germany differ strongly with regard to their political, economic, cultural and media system, the degree of platformisation of their societies, and the implementation of new technologies for the sake of epidemic control. Despite these differences, Germany can still learn some lessons from Chinese elderly people’s use of digital technologies during the Covid-19 pandemic and derive conclusions for elderly’s media trust and media education. This is supported by an explorative discourse analysis of Chinese online discussions of elderly’s situation during and after lockdown. The project‘s results are related to other empirical studies in China and Germany to derive conclusions for the media education of elderly and to gauge which factors and media formats foster or hamper media trust. The article describes the digitalization toolkit for retrofitting conventional machines. It explains technical elements that are needed to implement a cyber-physical system, such as the selection of suitable sensors, the use of virtual sensors, and the construction of a cyber-physical system with edge devices, gateway functions, and intelligent control. An example of applying these methods is the detection and escalation of a fan failure in a reflow oven. Various solution components are presented to detect and escalate the malfunction. The presented toolkit can be modularly transferred to other use cases and offers SMEs the opportunity to enter the digitalization of their machines and work processes cost-effectively. A concrete application is the use case "reflow oven", where maintenance can be informed through error messages and spare parts can be automatically ordered. Through the use of CPS, repairs and commissioning can also be carried out remotely. [Extracted from the article]

BIG data - Abstract
Mental disorders are widespread and a major public health problem. The risk of developing a mental disorder at some point in life is around 40%. Therefore, mental disorders are among the most common diseases. Despite the introduction of newer psychotropic drugs, disorder-specific psychotherapy and stimulation techniques, many of those affected still show insufficient symptom remission and a chronic course of the disorder. Conceptual and technological progress in recent years has enabled a new, more flexible and personalized form of mental health care. Both the traditional therapeutic concepts and newer decentralized, modularly structured, track units, together with innovative digital technologies, will offer individualized therapeutic options in order to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life of patients with mental illnesses. The primary goal of closely combining inpatient care concepts with innovative technologies is to provide comprehensive therapy and aftercare concepts for all individual needs of patients with mental disorders. Last but not least, this also ensures that specialist psychiatric treatment is available regardless of location. In twenty-first century psychiatry, modern care structures must be effectively linked to the current dynamics of digital transformation. This narrative review is dedicated to the theoretical and practical aspects of a cross-sectoral treatment system combined with innovative digital technologies in the psychiatric-psychotherapeutic field. The authors aim to illuminate these therapy modalities using the example of the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SCANNING electron microscopy , *NEOLITHIC Period , *POTSHERDS , *POTTERY , *CERAMICS - Abstract
The chaîne opératoire of Neolithic Korenovo ceramics is poorly known, as hitherto potsherds from only three sites, Malo Korenovo, Tomašica in central Croatia, and Becsehely–Bukkaljai dűlő in Hungary have been analysed archaeometrically. Korenovo is considered the southernmost aspect of the Linearbandkeramik (LBK). In this paper, the ceramic assemblage from Kapelica-Solarevac and Kaniška Iva (Central Croatia) will be discussed. Kapelica-Solarevac and Kaniška Iva are the only two sites in which Starčevo and Korenovo ceramics have been found together in closed contexts. Twenty potsherds from the Kapelica-Solarevac and Kaniška Iva assemblages were analysed using polarised microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDX). In combination with equivalent data from 49 Korenovo ceramics from Tomašica and Malo Korenovo, the results offer an insight into the practices of Korenovo potters and show the lack of exchange of technological knowledge between Korenovo and LBK potters in Austria and central Transdanubia (Hungary). On the other hand, Korenovo potters seem to closely follow ceramic recipes typical of the neighbouring Vinča potters, suggesting Korenovo to be a hybrid group between the Vinča and the LBK pottery communities. Theories of technology with an anthropological background have considered technology to be an extension or substitute of human organs. Due to technology man is able to enhance his bodily abilities and to act beyond his natural limitations (as described in the work of Arnold Gehlen). Contrary to this perspective phenomenological theories of technology conceptualised technology in opposition to man, as its complex and opaque counterpart (as discussed e.g. in the works of Hans Blumenberg). These two theoretical perspectives can be combined with correspondent sociological diagnoses: the concept of "Landnahme" (the taking over of land) according to Klaus Dörre and the concept of "offshoring" as discussed by John Urry. On the one hand, "Landnahme" means that the expansion of capitalist commodification is constantly expanded on external terrain -- which corresponds with the anthropological theory of technology in the sense of crossing distances and appropriating space. On the other hand, the logics of "offshoring" -- the logics of secrets and enclosure -- corresponds with the phenomenological concept of technology (technology as "black box"). Objects, practices and power relations disappear beyond the horizon. Deducted from these two lines of reasoning (anthropological concepts of technology and "Landnahme" on the one hand and a phenomenological understanding of technology and "offshoring" on the other) questions regarding the relationship between the logics of spatial expansion and simultaneous strategies of retreat arise. The thesis will be introduced that power over space is not simply synonymous with power over technology. Instead, power can be conceptualised as the ability to -- selectively and deliberately -- switch between or combine technological strategies of "Landnahme" and "offshoring". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The supply of online therapy options for mild to moderate depressive disorders has substantially risen both nationally and internationally in the past years. While the efficacy and efficiency of specific online-based therapeutic services were indicated within the framework of scientific evaluations, little is known about the acceptance of these new therapy options. Methods: In a nationwide online survey of online-based therapy options for mild to moderate depressive disorders, the attitude and stance as well as the use intention and the subjectively perceived knowledge of 657 medical practitioners and therapists, active in psychotherapeutic and psychiatric treatment were collated. The impact of the potential predictors on the use intention of online-based therapies, based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, was analyzed by means of a binary logistic regression model. Results: Besides the perceived performance and expense expectations, the supportive framework conditions, the influence of the cooperative environment, the individual technical affinity as well as the evaluation of the prospective significance of online-based therapy proved to be significantly influential predictors on the user intention. Special predictability for a positive user intention was shown related to the perceived potential of online therapy. Conclusion: The results underline the relevance of further evidence-basing of online therapy for mild to moderate depressive disorders. A user-oriented, participatory technology development proves to be just as relevant as a comprehensive sensitization, elucidation and education of potential users for a successful implementation. In February 2017 the application was approved by the faculty and half a year later it was there: the 3D anatomy table of the company "Anatomage". Since the winter semester 2017/18, it has been available as a supporting high-tech learning tool to the students of the preparation course as well as to all interested parties who can repeat anatomical preparation techniques and cuts in an endless loop. Several whole-body donors and an extensive "high resolution regional anatomy" are stored in the corresponding image and section technique and subsequent 3D simulation. In addition, various other functions and tools are available to support learning, including CT and radiological sectional images, a database of clinical cases comprising several thousand cases and much more. In times when 3D technology is becoming increasingly important in everyday working life, the table offers an inexhaustible wealth of opportunities to train yourself and refresh and test your knowledge in individual or group work. Digitization offers machine manufacturers in fluid technology new opportunities by using machine learning and artificial intelligence. Companies like Hawe Hydraulik, Bosch Rexroth, and Argo-Hytos recognize the potential of AI and are working on various applications to leverage the benefits of AI in their products. These applications include reducing commissioning times, early identification of sources of errors, and reducing the burden on construction machinery. The use of AI also enables the simplification of commissioning processes, cost savings, and the application of condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. However, the question of ownership and responsibility of data arises in business models where machine manufacturers want to use the data from the operation of their products. - Abstract
Wheelchairs aremeans of transportation. They have four wheels, ametal frame, a fabric seating and a seat cushion. Wheelchairs can be seen as convenient and useful. But in dominant discourses wheelchairs are overshadowed by the problematic, by fear and social alarm. Wheel chairs signal something, e. g. passivity, dependency, being trapped. In opposition to this there are discourses that promote thewheelchair as a liberating, mundane and as an embodied assistive device that (re-)enables an independent life. However, a lot of severely walking impaired people hesistate for years, until they opt for using a wheelchair. This contribution is looking at wheelchair acquisition and acceptance processes and their societal framework. It includes preliminary results of a qualitative interview study with people with walking impairments and tries to unravel discourses of disciplining and of the internalisation of stigma and ableism. - Abstract
Medical engineering such as Deep-Brain-Stimulation do not only refer to scientific/technical studies, they can also be seen as cultural techniques by looking at their historical origins. In this way human beings can be recognized as connectable, adjustable and designable in regards to technology-friendly images of technologies, of worlds and of humanity. By integrating technical elements into the human body, we are changing the outlines of biological and artificial entities. Hardware-software-relations as well as body-mind-relations become subject to linkage and design processes. The interaction between human and non-human agents can result in innovative correlations. Within socialisation these activity fields need to be reconsidered and roles must be newly distributed. This is necessary since the inherent potential of BrainComputer-Interfaces will set new long-term cultural standards due to the therapeutic and non-therapeutic opportunities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
