Abstract

From 657 children who suffered from fractures of the femoral shaft during the years 1965-1980 504 could be followed-up in 13 hospitals of the GDR clinically and roentgenologically. 313 had undergone conservative treatment, 191 surgery with different methods. In all surgically treated cases there was overgrowth of the broken femoral shaft there was a shortening only in a few cases. In most cases the rotational deformity of the distal fragment persisted. Dislocation ad latus always had disappeared, whereas varus and expecially valgus deformities as well as antecurvation had improved partially. Coxa valga deformity was found most frequently after internal fixation.

Abstract

Sudden accidental supination of the foot often causes the fibular ligament to be ruptured which is mostly mistaken for a sprained ankle and treated conservatively. From May 1977 to February 1984 we treated 431 cases of this kind surgically by suture of the ruptured ligament. Also in children suture of the ligament is indicated. The operation can be performed as an outpatient procedure.

Abstract

A review of the hip replacement operations performed by the department of orthopaedics of the University Hospital of Freiburg follows. The operation brought "very good" results for 14.4% of those operated upon, "good" results for 50.6% and satisfactory results for 29.7%. The results of the operation were unsatisfactory for 5.6% of the patients. In view of the possible complications, the results will be discussed.

Abstract

Within 4 years (September 1977 to September 1981) 169 closed fractures of the feet were seen at our paediatric-surgical outpatient dept. Special therapeutic problems arose only in fractures of the talus and the calcaneus, although necrosis of the talus were rare. Concerning treatment a plaster cast, sufficient relief and early arch-support are essential. Fractures of the other tarsal bones were mostly without problems, a conservative treatment was used for these cases.
