A 6 year old girl presented with flat-topped, skin-colored, partly grouped papules with slightly roughened surface on the left side of the forehead and around the left orbit. In an off-label use imiquimod 5% cream was applied twice a week before bedtime and was rinsed off in the morning. After four weeks of treatment the lesions had vanished completely. We suggest imiquimod 5% cream as a treatment option for juvenile plane warts even in children and in the face.

In ruminants large amounts of nucleic acids associated with the microbial cell mass leaving the fore-stomach system via the abomasum enter the small intestine. In dairy cows this amounts to 100-200 g microbial nucleic acids per day. These nucleic acids are very efficiently digested in the small intestine whereby nucleosides were found to be the main degradation products. Therefore, this review centers mainly on the mechanisms of intestinal absorption of nucleosides and their role in nucleic acid digestion. Furthermore, metabolism of nucleosides in intestinal epithelial cells and its bearing for nucleoside absorption and salvage of nucleosides for nucleic acid synthesis in various tissues is considered. According to own studies using isolated intestinal brush-border membrane (BBM) vesicles (BBMV) from dairy cows purine and pyimidine nucleosides are transported actively by two separate Na+ co-transport systems (N1 and N2) across the bovine BBM, whereby transport activity in the small intestine decreases from proximal to distal. Guanosine and inosine appeared to be transported exclusively by N1 while thymidine and cytidine appeared to be transported exclusively by N2. Uridine and adenosine had an affinity to both transporters. In comparison to findings in man and rabbit, transport capacity (Vmax) of N1 and N2 in the BBM of cows was more than 10-fold higher. Similar findings were obtained in BBMV isolated from the small intestine of veal calves with rudimentary forestomach development in regard to nucleoside transport. Therefore, the high intestinal transport activity for nucleosides seems to be a genetically fixed property in the bovine, which is not related to a functional fore-stomach system.

The effect of noradrenaline and adrenaline on isolated smooth muscle from the reticular groove of calves was studied. Both catecholamines caused a concentration-dependent (1.1.10(-6) mol/l) contraction of the transversal muscle strips from the floor of the reticular groove. This excitatory effect was antagonized by prazosin (10(-7)) mol/l), and by high concentrations of yohimbine (10(-6) mol/l) and atropine (10(-5)) mol/l). Tetrodotoxin (3.10(-6) mol/l), an inhibitor of nerve conduction, did not change the contraction induced by catecholamines (55.10(-6)) mol/l). Catecholamines did not produce a contraction of the longitudinal muscle from the lips of the reticular groove. The beta-adrenergic agonist isoprenaline (55.10(-6) mol/l) even elicited a reduction of acetylcholine (55.10(-6)) mol/l) induced contraction of both the transversal and the longitudinal muscle from the reticular groove. The relaxing effect of isoprenaline was antagonized by propranolol (55.10(-6)) mol/l). According to these results the excitatory effect of catecholamines on the smooth muscle cells occurs through alpha-adrenergic receptors, whereas the relaxing effect is mediated by beta-adrenergic receptors of the muscle cell. The excitatory effect of catecholamines on the transversal muscle appears to be predominant. Atropine appears to be an unspecific blocking agent of alpha-adrenergic receptors.

Food intake in man and animals occurs as meals. Because changes in daily food intake in laboratory animals are often associated with corresponding changes in meal size, while meal frequency is less affected, food intake appears to be regulated mainly by the satiety mechanism. Meal size is controlled by feedback or satiety signals originating from the stomach, the small intestine, the liver and the fat depots. Both neural and hormonal (Bombesin?, Cholecystokinin?) feedback signals are elicited in the stomach and intestine. The feedback signals of the liver apparently originate from hepatic chemoreceptors, whose activity is modulated by certain metabolites, in particular glucose. The satiety effect of pancreatic glucagon, whose plasma concentration in the portal vein increases during a meal, also appears to be mediated by the hepatic chemoreceptors. Unmyelated nerve endings are probably the morphological substrate of the hepatic chemoreceptors. There is some evidence that circulating fat metabolites (fatty acids, ketone bodies, glycerol), whose plasma levels are related to the size of the fat depots, function as lipostatic feedback signals. The signal transfer from the gastrointestinal chemo- and mechanoreceptors and from the hepatic chemoreceptors to the central nervous system occurs mainly through vagal afferents. The first relay for this afferents is the nucleus tractus solitarii in the medulla oblongata. The next relay is at the pons, from where neurons project to the hypothalamus and other forebrain areas. The hypothalamus has important integrative functions in the control of food intake.

Unlabelled: The following results were obtained from 37 cases of malignant lymphomas, including 8 eosinophilic granulomas: 1. Localisation: a. Plasmocytomas occur with approximately the same frequency in the spine and skull, but there is an exceptionally high incidence of multiple myelomas in the thoracic spine. Only in a few cases plasmocytomas of the skull lead to neurological symptoms; particularly when they are localised in the base of the skull. b. Lymphogranulomatosis affects only the thoracic vertebral column and leads less frequently to neurological complications compared with the multiple myelomas. c. Eosinophilic granulomas often attack the calvaria, but can also be found in the spine, the base of the cranium and the flat bones of the pelvis and the scapula. d. Leukaemias showed mainly intracerebral and intramedullary alterations: haemorrhages, leukaemic infiltrations and signs of degeneration. 2., Clinical Findings: a. Whenever the calvarium was affected than repeated complaints of headaches prevailed and only very few neurological signs or symptoms were complained. b. Tumors in the base of the cranium caused eye symptoms and various cranial nerve palsies but less frequently increased intracranial pressure. c. Tumors localised in the region of the spinal cord caused early signs like root-irritations (intercoastal neuralgia), diffuse dorsal pain and/or lumbalgia. Symptoms of spinal compression generally of an ascending character then developed within a few weeks. d. Neurological symptoms were the first to manifest themselves in all cases of plasmocytoma in half of our patients with Hodgkin's disease. 3. History and course: a. Generally in the cases of cranial involvement the previous history was less than half a year (visible changes or clear cut symptoms). Spinal tumors on the average had longer histories as did other extra-medullar spinal new growth. Similar courses were seen in multiple myelomas and granulomas. b. Solitary plasmocytomas were very rare but seem to have a considerably better prognosis than in case of multiple occurrence.

The activity of alkaline phosphatase in small intestine mucosa was increased by about 40% in rats adapted to a high fat diet in comparison to high-carbohydrate-adapted animals. As high fat-feeding leads to an increase in the intestine's capacity to absorb fat, this finding is consistent with the hypothesis that alkaline phosphatase in the small intestine epithelium plays a role in fat absorption.
