- Abstract
Introduction: The impairment of mental health among veterinary professionals has raised public awareness in recent years. The driving forces include a serious gap in veterinary services - with less available veterinary colleagues, especially in rural areas - and a general lack of veterinary graduates. This article presents the results of our first Swiss survey on psychological well-being in the veterinary profession. Our results are viewed both in the current context and in the context of developments that have already taken place in other medical disciplines. Results indicate higher levels of stress in veterinarians working as clinicians, in female colleagues, in veterinarians of younger age and veterinarians under employment. In the meantime, larger surveys such as the Vétos Entraide (https://vetos-entraide.com) were established in France and projects such as the Happy Vet project (https://happyvetproject.org) were launched in Switzerland for eg. the burnout prevention in the profession. However, the topic of «mental health» remains highly relevant in veterinary medicine and requires further research and measures, which should consider the identified predisposing factors, such as age and gender.

- Abstract
Introduction: Veterinary students suffer from increased psychological stress compared to the general public and are increasingly affected by manifest mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety disorders, as well as an increased prevalence of suicidal thoughts. Additionally, veterinary students tend to ignore signs of mental distress and do not seek support for their mental health issues. This impaired mental health is also evident in fully trained veterinarians, who, among other things, have the highest suicide rates of all medical professions. In our survey, we examined a total of 428 veterinary students at the two veterinary faculties of the Universities of Zurich and Bern. The survey was carried out across all six years of the curriculum as a cross-sectional survey using standardized questionnaires on resilience, sense of coherence and depression. In all years, the students showed increased levels of depression compared to the general public, and the salutogenic parameters of resilience and sense of coherence were also reduced. The constellation with increased depression, reduced resilience and reduced sense of coherence was particularly accentuated in the second and third year. The increased affective stress on students presents itself as a consistent condition, which - if you look at studies on fully trained veterinarians - continues into their working life together with a reduced ability to cope. The low number of participants in the higher years of study and the high number of female study participants could limit the generalizability of the results. In addition, the data was collected in spring 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have influenced the results. Active counteracting, for example by integrating the teaching of protective behavior such as mindful self-compassion and resource-oriented behavior such as mind-body techniques, therefore appears to be recommended in the veterinary training curriculum from the first semester onwards. Various measures to support students have been introduced since 2021, such as events on learning strategies, a mentoring system and seminars on mental health.

Violence and abuse in competitive sports, such as physical and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect and sexual abuse, affect children, adolescents and adults alike and lead to severe physical, psychological and social consequences. In current medical and educational care concepts of athletes, there is a lack of consistent integration of sports/psychiatric, clinical psychological and psychotherapeutic, developmental pediatric and developmental psychological expertise. Problem areas arise from fine lines between harassment, non-physical and physical violence. The present position paper includes recommendations for the development of a concept for the protection of mental health in competitive sports and for coping with mental stress and psychological disorders by qualified medical experts in mental health, i.e., child, adolescent and adult psychiatrists with specific expertise in competitive sports: sports psychiatrists. According to the recommendations, experts should also have and further develop competence in other fields, especially in ethics, child protection, protection against violence and abuse in competitive sports, awareness of and dealing with transgression of boundaries, knowledge about child development, and transparency in training structures and relationships. Mental complaints and illnesses are common health problems in competitive sports, and mental health, like physical health and performance, is an integral dimension in competitive sports. The promotion of mental health and safe management of mental complaints and illnesses in competitive sports requires a qualified medical discipline for mental health: sports psychiatry as well as an interdisciplinary and interprofessional understanding of care and cooperation. In the following article, sports psychiatry in competitive sports will be addressed and (i) mental health promotion and prevention, (ii) the tandem concept of interprofessional care and collaboration, (iii) diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare of mental disorders and illnesses, and (iv) education and training in sports psychiatry will be presented and discussed. - Abstract
People with a positive body image are more content with their body, reflect their society's beauty ideals more critically, have the ability to care for their body and are better protected from depression. Adolescence represents a particularly critical period relating to the development of the body image. The results of 1023 adolescents between the age of 13 and 16 years are unambiguous: In both analyzed language parts of the country, the positive body image correlates significantly positive with mental health and significantly negative with the influence by the media. For the future it is recommended to develop target-group-specific and gender-specific awareness and communication measures, particularly by including social media, as well as associated means to strengthen adolescents' mental health. People with a positive body image are more content with their body, reflect their society’s beauty ideals more critically, have the ability to care for their body and are better protected from depression. Adolescence represents a particularly critical period relating to the development of the body image. The results of 1023 adolescents between the age of 13 and 16 years are unambiguous: In both analyzed language parts of the country, the positive body image correlates significantly positive with mental health and significantly negative with the influence by the media. For the future it is recommended to develop target-group-specific and gender-specific awareness and communication measures, particularly by including social media, as well as associated means to strengthen adolescents’ mental health.

The webdocumentary is, by its interactive, immersive and multimedia nature, an educational, scientific and popularization tool of choice. But it is also a particularly valuable historiographical tool. It makes it possible to report, in a plural, accessible and original way, on niche historical research, while offering the opportunity to present on the same platform, and without immediately hierarchizing them, a diversity of stories. The webdocumentary is thus able to present the different facets of an event, a story or a little-known historical fact, while leaving great freedom of investigation and interpretation to the user. It indeed offers the possibility of showing in a way, if not equal, at least fairly, the different views or historiographical interpretations of a fact or a situation, thus creating more than a book or an scientific paper will never be able to do so, a space where historiographical plurality can fully exist. This is what I want to demonstrate in this article based on three webdocumentary projects on the history of mental health, two completed and one in progress, to which I had the chance to contribute.
