The article discusses the architectural features of the churches, dedicated to St. Hieronymus. Particular attention is paid to the characteristics in which their association with the patron can be identified. The research is set in two steps. The first refers to the identification and classification of the common characteristics of the churches in question, the second to their confrontation with the architectural archetypal matrix of the sacred, as their unique dimension. The comparison shows the richness of architectural archetypal elements in these, at first glance, modest architectures. The goal is to show the often overlooked richness of noble simplicity.

The author of this study focuses on the issue of the church topography of the city of Nitra, which has not been adequately addressed until now, as the research of the earlier history of this important Slovak city was hindered by an absence of relevant sources. The old archive of the city was destroyed by fire before 1679 and also the city and many of its sacral buildings were destroyed during the Ottoman occupation. The author focuses on the localization and patronage of key sacral objects in the privileged Lower Town (St Peter's Chapel, St Andrew's Church, the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, the Church of the Virgin Mary at Calvary and others). His conclusions allow us to correct the topographical map of the city and to draw up a new map of the topography of Nitra before the end of the 16th century, capturing definitively located sacral buildings in the privileged Lower Town.

Roman Catholic Church ,Missionary Benedictines of St. Ottilien ,Transnational History ,Sacral Architecture ,Missionary Spaces ,History (General) and history of Europe - Abstract
Intending to combine missionary activity and monastic monkhood, in 1884 the Missionary Benedictines of St. Ottilien were founded. From Bavaria the Congregation tried to take Christianity into the world, beginning in colonial „German East Africa“ (present-day Tanzania). Right from the start the Catholic mission society was a trans-local, trans-regional, and trans-national organisation. One activity demonstrated the complexity and ,efficacy‘ of its global network: building cathedrals and churches. The author offers the thesis, that sacral architecture was embedded within the – theoretically speaking – ‚missionary space‘. It contributed aesthetically, mentally, spiritually and sensuously to an imagined community of the Benedictine missions.

The article discusses the symbolic and social aspects of churches and church building among the Benedictine missionaries of the Kongregation der Missionsbenediktiner von St. Ottilien (Congretation of the Benedictine Missionaries of St. Ottilien, OSB) during their activities in German East Africa, later known as Tanganyika and Tanzania, in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The author surveys various aspects of church architecture and interior decoration, both in Tanzania and in Germany. Churches analyzed include St.-Josef-Kathedrale (Saint Joseph's Cathedral) in Daressalam, Tanzania, St.-Felicitas-Kirche (Saint Felicity Church) in Münsterschwarzach, Germany, and Maria-Hilf-Kathedrale (Cathedral of the Intercession of Mary) in Ndanda, Tanzania.

The topic of sacral architecture has been fascinating me for quite a while now and I thought it might be an appropriate ending for my architectural studies to design such an atmospheric and charged space. After a long search for a suitable thematic setting and research regarding contemporary sacral architecture I stumbled upon this studentscompetition for a temple design for the earthgod 'Tudi Gong' in Taiwan. A fascinating task due to the fact that asian culture is very alien to mine and I only know it from touristic visits. Thanks to this distance it was possible to approach in very different ways since the topic of sacral spaves is already very charged. By analyzing the to me unknown history and other strong sacral architecture examples, a possible vision of the future development evolved within my design. The climatic conditions of the site und it's religious background behind it were the trigger to question handed down architectural forms and a stimulus to rethink and reinterpret them. The earthgod 'Tudi Gong' is a god of the chinese folk believe and is on the very low level of the divine pantheon. He is a friendly, benevolent god which is very popular in the taiwanese society. You could call him an everyday god, because he is asked for a lot of small favors and is being called for all the small concerns. He is the mediator between the humans and the gods and that role was an important starting point for my design idea. The design should show the spiritual mediation as well as the actual mediation on site between the two very different cityscapes meeting in this point. By using a regional material as bamboo in a new way, which is less constructructive than symbolic in it's quantity brings added value to the structure without being utopic. Starting by the geografic and historical context and situation of Taiwan I will try to lead trough this paper to make clear what my design decisions were based on. By explaining the current prevalent religions the role of Tudi Gong and it's ritual entanglements in taiwanese everyday life will be depicted. The description of the city of Taichung and its facts lead to the site and ultimately in my design proposal.
