The seventh edition of the UNIFE World Rail Market Study once again provides a comprehensive view of the current status and expected development of the total and accessible world rail supply market. The study covers the market development of 60 countries, which jointly comprise more than 98% of global rail traffic, clustered into seven regions. Data for countries that are not part of the focus group has been extrapolated on the basis of track kilometres, transportation units, passenger kilometres, and tonne kilometres. The standardization of technology reduces operating costs and maintenance and repair costs. Modern asset management means registration and inspection of all assets in order to describe the current condition. This is the main issue of a railway infrastructure manager. Interven-tions are not set as long as current condition fits the demands. Establishing a long-term, sustainable maintenance planning prognosis of future track behaviour is necessary. Track beha-viour is described not only by the current state but also by its behaviour over time. Functional knowledge enables the infrastructure manager to plan track measures well ahead. Prognosis therefore is a major task of track research. Track recording car data are valuable to describe and evaluate the current track condition.
