Interprofessional patient handover between physicians and nurses is considered one of the most important professional activities for ensuring patient safety. Errors in interprofessional patient handover are a major cause of preventable patient harm. For this reason, nurses and physicians are expected to be competent in patient handover at the end of their training or studies. However, the topic of interprofessional patient handover is hardly addressed in German medical and nursing curricula. The concept of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA), which guarantees a high degree of theory-practice transfer, seems to be a promising teaching-learning approach in this context. An EPA for interprofessional patient handover already exists for the medical profession. However, this EPA is not transferable to the nursing profession and therefore needs to be defined for mono- or interprofessional nursing education.

Seit November 2023 gibt es die Queerbrarians, ein deutschsprachiges Netzwerk queerer Bibliotheksmenschen. Anhand der beim ersten Treffen zusammengetragenen Themen legt dieser Beitrag neben den Beweggründen für die Entstehung des Netzwerks auch dessen Ideen und Vorstellungen einer queerfreundlicheren Bibliothekswelt dar. Queerness ist in Bibliotheken im deutschsprachigen Raum ein noch immer unterrepräsentiertes Thema, egal ob vor oder hinter der Theke, im Bestand oder in den Katalogen. Das muss sich ändern. Die Queerbrarians und dieser Beitrag möchten diese Veränderung anstoßen, erläutern, warum sie wichtig und wertvoll ist und für eine queere Perspektive sensibilisieren. Dass dabei (bibliotheks)politische Überlegungen ins Spiel kommen, ist beinahe unvermeidlich, denn queer sein ist (bibliotheks)politisch.

Queerbrarians is a German-speaking network of queer librarians and people working or aiming to work in libraries or library institutions that was founded in November 2023. Based upon topics gathered at the first network meeting, this article presents the motivations for the creation of the network as well as its ideas and visions of more queer-friendly libraries. Queerness is still an underrepresented topic in libraries in German-speaking countries, whether it’s about patrons, about people working in libraries, or about the collections or the catalogs. This needs to change. Queerbrarians and this article want to initiate this change, explain why it is important and valuable, and raise awareness for the queer perspective. It is almost inevitable that (library) policy considerations will come into play, because being queer (in libraries) is political.

Mit ihrem gewohnten Impetus und einigem Inszenierungsaufwand verkündete Bundesinnenministerin Nancy Faeser am Dienstag dieser Woche das Verbot des rechtsextremen Magazins Compact. Seither ist die verfassungs- und verwaltungsrechtliche Debatte in vollem Gange. Ein Hauptkritikpunkt: das als Grundlage des Verbots gewählte Vereinsrecht. Tatsächlich spricht einiges dafür, dass dieses das gezielte Verbot eines Medienerzeugnisses nicht tragen kann.

Background: Bullying is a form of violence that is carried out repeatedly, with the intention of causing harm and with an imbalance of power between those involved. Bullying has serious negative effects on the mental health of adolescents and thus represents a significant health risk in childhood and adolescence. Methods: Based on data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study from the survey year 2022 in Germany (N = 6,475), the prevalence of school bullying and cyberbullying among 11-, 13- and 15-year-olds in Germany was analysed. In addition, the prevalence of school bullying and cyberbullying was analysed as a trend from 2009/10 to 2022 (bullying) and from 2017/18 to 2022 (cyberbullying). Results: Around 14 % of the learners surveyed reported direct experience of bullying at school, and around 7 % reported cyberbullying experiences as bullied and/or bullying victims. Adolescents who identified as gender diverse were particularly likely to report bullying experiences. School bullying decreased over time, but remained stable between 2017/18 and 2022. Cyberbullying, on the other hand, increased in 2022 compared to 2017/18. Conclusions: Experiencing bullying at school and online is an everyday experience for many children and young people, so there is still a need for the broad implementation of effective anti-bullying measures in schools.

Background: Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) is one of the largest international studies on child and adolescent health and cooperates with the World Health Organization (WHO). In Germany, adolescents aged 11, 13 and 15 are surveyed every four years about their health, health behaviour and social conditions. This article describes the HBSC study and in particular the methodology of the current 2022 survey and prior surveys conducted between 2009/10 and 2017/18. Method: 174 schools with a total of 6,475 students participated in the 2022 survey. The survey was conducted using questionnaires and covered a wide range of topics (including mental health, physical activity, bullying experiences, social determinants of health and experiences related to COVID-19). The 2022 survey was complemented by a school principal survey (N = 160). In addition to the current sample, the samples of the three previous surveys with representative data for Germany are presented: 2009/10 (N = 5,005), 2013/14 (N = 5,961) and 2017/18 (N = 4,347).: Discussion The health of children and adolescents is of great public health importance. The HBSC study makes a substantial contribution by providing internationally comparable results, analysing trends, and providing stakeholders with comprehensive and representative health monitoring data.

EquipSent is a volunteer-based non-profit organization aiming at creating conditions for sustainable teaching, study, and academic research worldwide. Used, functional equipment is collected by its members, who are responsible for matching the donations with the receivers in need. After starting in 2017, nine big transfers were accomplished that significantly impacted the quality of local scientific and educational life. In this article, we show how EquipSent as an organization strives to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Chemistry in Switzerland.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for in situ/operando tracking of catalytic reactions that involve paramagnetic species either as a catalyst (e.g. transition metal ions or defects), reaction intermediates (radicals) or poisoning agents such as coke. This article provides a summary of recent experimental examples and developments in resonator design as well as detection schemes that were carried out in our group. Opportunities for applying this technique are illustrated by examples, including studies of transition metal exchanged zeolites and metal-free zeolites as well as metal oxide catalysts. The inherent limitations of EPR applied at high temperatures are discussed, as well as strategies in reducing or lifting these restrictions are evaluated and ideas for future improvements and methodologies are discussed.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to undertake an integrative literature review in order to determine the prevalence, etiology, and reactivation of oral HSV infection in patients receiving chemotherapy (CT).Methods: The study was carried out in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Virtual Health Library, and Scopus databases, using the descriptors “Herpes Simplex”, “Viral Diseases”, “Mouth”, and “Antineoplastic Agents”.Results: The findings suggest that HSV infection is widespread in this group of patients and can be severe. HSV infection is frequent in CT patients, and treatment should begin as soon as it is feasible, utilizing antivirals to avoid future difficulties, as patients are immunocompromised.Conclusion: It is critical for health professionals to be fully informed on the dangers and treatment choices available, with the most appropriate therapy for each circumstance. Furthermore, more recent research with acceptable methodological rigor is required to better quantify the prevalence of HSV in these patients.

Aim: Training decisions are viewed as a problem by the majority of medical students.In the present study we compared sociodemographic and psychological characteristics of students who are interested in surgical training to those who preferred a non-surgical specialty. Furthermore, we examined whether students who wish to be trained as surgeons performed better than their non-surgical counterparts in a course designed to acquire skills in minimally invasive surgery.Method: From October 2020 to January 2021 we performed a cross-sectional survey among 116 medical students prior to their year of practical training at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel. Based on their intended field of specialization, the students were divided into a non-surgical and a surgical group. Sociodemographic and psychological characteristics such as self-efficacy expectations, resilience and stress perception were evaluated and compared between groups. Simultaneously, we compared their surgical performance in two laparoscopic exercises and their self-assessment as surgeons. Statistical differences between the training groups were determined by the Mann-Whitney U test or Pearson’s Chi square test. Results: Ninety-two students participated in the study, of whom 64.1% intended to train in a non-surgical specialty and 35.9% in a surgical specialty. Focusing on the intricacies of prompt engineering, we elucidate the steps and considerations imperative for achieving targeted, high-fidelity results. The article presents varying outcomes based on different prompt structures, highlighting the AI's adaptability in producing questions of distinct complexities. While emphasizing the transformative potential of ChatGPT, we also spotlight challenges, including the AI’s occasional “hallucination”, underscoring the importance of rigorous review. This guide aims to furnish educators with the know-how to integrate AI into their assessment creation process, heralding a new era in medical education tools.

Background: Telephone counseling is an important form of support for informal carers of persons with dementia. The quality and benefit of this kind of service have rarely been evaluated in Germany. Methods: We developed a survey to assess the quality of telephone counseling. We conducted an online survey among 201 users of the telephone hotline “Alzheimer-Telefon” (Alzheimer’s telephone service) provided by the German Alzheimer’s Association after the consultation. The aim of the study was to determine whether this form of telephone support meets certain quality criteria and the callers’ needs. Results: Of the 201 participants, 80% were female. The mean age of the callers was 51 years. 74% of cases were one-off consultations; 26% of the callers sought advice twice or more often. The most common reasons for calling included behavioral changes (45%) and finding a nursing home (41%). Other family members were significantly (p=0.036) more likely to seek local respite options. Based on the 201 online questionnaires evaluated, most callers were highly satisfied with the counseling services provided by the Alzheimer’s telephone service. Those seeking advice were particularly satisfied with the appreciative and empathetic communication style of the advisors and their professional competence. This also applies to the accessibility of the telephone. More than three quarters were fully satisfied with the information they received. Almost half of the callers were sure that the advice would help to solve their issue. 14% of people seeking advice were uncertain about how to implement the suggested solutions.A further survey would be worthwhile to determine to what extent the topics of the consultation can be implemented. The feedback from relatives who use the Alzheimer’s telephone repeatedly could be used for this purpose – the repetition rate is currently 25% and the trend is rising. Results could be interesting for successful counseling and for the development of further support services. Conclusion: The telephone hotline is a useful component of dementia care in Germany and an important contribution to the National Dementia Strategy.

The coronavirus pandemic has once again shown that scarcity and distribution are political problems. It is only through distribution that resources, finite in principle, are separated into scarce and non-scarce goods. So how can this unfair distribution of resources be countered?

Medienbezogene Kompetenzen von Lehrkräften sind unabdingbar, um Schüler:innen auf Teilhabe, Partizipation und eine verantwortliche Mitgestaltung in einer Kultur der Digitalität vorzubereiten. Konkret benötigen Lehrkräfte hierzu medienbezogene Basis- und Lehrkompetenzen. Für die zielgerichtete und erfolgreiche Förderung dieser Kompetenzen im Rahmen der Lehrkräftebildung sind Instrumente zur Messung dieser Medienkompetenzen hilfreich. Bestehende Instrumente greifen allerdings zumeist auf einfache, nicht selten sehr allgemein formulierte Selbsteinschätzungen zurück. Dies erschwert eine valide Messung von Kompetenzen. In diesem Beitrag wird ein alternativer Messansatz vorgestellt, der Selbsteinschätzungen von Medienkompetenzen mittels Szenarien kontextualisiert und damit präzisiert. Die Szenarien-Basierung führt zu einem validen Messergebnis, hat aber für den Einsatz im Feld den Nachteil, dass die Messung deutlich umfangreicher ausfällt. Dem begegnen wir im vorliegenden Beitrag durch die Entwicklung einer Kurzskala in einem mehrstufigen Verfahren. Auf Basis eines Datensatzes von N = 552 (angehenden) Lehrkräften wird eine szenarienbasierte Kurzskala zur Messung instrumenteller und kritisch-reflexiver Medienkompetenzen sowie medienbezogener Lehrkompetenzen entwickelt. Diese Kurzskala wird in einer weiteren Studie mit N = 204 Lehrkräften nochmals validiert. Die Ergebnisse beider Studien unterstützen die Validität der Kurzskala. Für die Lehrkräftebildung und Forschung wird somit ein akzeptanzförderndes und ressourcenschonendes Instrument bereitgestellt, das eine reliable und valide Messung instrumenteller und kritisch-reflexiver Medienkompetenzen sowie medienbezogener Lehrkompetenzen erlaubt.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed systemic problems in the global health system. It revealed that the global health system perpetuates global health inequalities rather than effectively reducing them: The international community, particularly the countries of the Global North, failed to make COVID-19 vaccines widely available to the populations of the world's poorest countries. This blog debate takes stock of the reform debate about a just and decolonizing transformation of the health system. Bringing together scholars from various disciplines, the contributions of this debate ask what a fair global health system could look like and what role the law plays in it.
