The Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) field is evolving in Canada, with CVE teams offering psychosocial disengagement interventions in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec. This article is written as a case study to detail the evolution of the city of Toronto’s CVE program, called Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), housed in the community mental health centre Yorktown Family Services (“Yorktown”). Toronto – the largest Canadian city, provincial capital of Ontario, and one of the most multicultural cities in the world – has seen several high-profile cases of violent extremism and terrorism over the past few years. For example, there were two “Incel” attacks that together killed eleven people, including nine women, in 2018 and 2020. In 2022, hate crime occurrences reported to the Toronto Police Service were 74% higher than pre-pandemic levels, and 40% higher than the 10-year average. Clearly, there was a need for a structured and multi-sectoral response which led to the inception of ETA in 2020. Against this backdrop, this paper outlines ETA’s program components and operational design. Various data points such as client age range, ideological affiliation, and services rendered are provided to demonstrate trends for the period of April 2022 to March 2023. As this paper will demonstrate, ETA’s services are grounded in engagement, outreach, case management (multi-agency service delivery), psychotherapy, religious counselling, peer support and forensic consultation, which is reflected in the evolving CVE literature and evidence-base.

Die jüdische „Prager deutsche“ Schriftstellerin Lenka Reinerová (1916–2008) wurde 2005 als “Kafka’s last living heir” bezeichnet. Trotz dieses ruhmreichen Erbes zweifelt man zuweilen am (literarischen) Wert ihrer Prosa. Die gegenwärtige Statistik der UNHCR für Flüchtlinge, die explizit Vergleiche zur weltweiten Flüchtlingslage nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zieht, zwingt jedoch zu einem erneuten Lesen von vielen Werken Reinerovás, einschließlich der beiden, die in diesem Artikel analysiert werden sollen, Grenze geschlossen (1958) and Alle Farben der Sonne und der Nacht (2003). Die jüngsten Stimmen der Critical Refugee Studies (CRS) und Border Studies wollen die Grenzerfahrungen von am Rand stehenden und gefährdeten Gruppen ans Licht bringen. In den zwei hier behandelten Werken begegnet die als überzeugte Kommunistin auftretende Ich-Erzählerin geschlossenen Grenzen – in der Form von Landesgrenzen, Gefängnismauern und Ideologiengrenzen – die dann aufgelöst werden. Eine Brücke zu Reinerovás Werk zu schlagen, kann die gegenwärtige Diskussion über Grenzpoetik bereichern. Statt einem andauernden Misstrauen Grenzen gegenüber zu verfallen, zeigt Reinerová, dass Grenzenlosigkeit wieder eingegrenzt werden muss. Mit ihrem scheinbar nostalgischen Blick auf die Vergangenheit erinnert sie ihre Leser*innen daran, dass Menschen Traditionen des Denkens und der Taten angehören, auch wenn sie bedrängt, umstritten, angeschlagen sind, und dass manches gerettet und erneuert werden soll.

Highlights − Teachers of citizenship education in lower SES schools emphasise voting and elections in their teaching approach. − Teachers of citizenship education in fee-paying schools emphasise political structures, national politics and social responsibility. − Teachers of citizenship education in lower SES schools tend to emphasise personal responsibility. − Teachers of citizenship education in fee-paying schools tend to focus on participatory citizenship. − There is little evidence of justice-oriented citizenship education in Irish schools. Purpose: This study examines whether differences exist in the teaching of CSPE across school types: Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS), fee-paying and ‘other’ schools. The study also examines whether such differences are linked to students’ cultural capital. Design Methodology: A survey of 222 Irish CSPE teachers was used to identify differences in their teaching of CPSE. Responses were analysed by statistical and thematic analysis. The findings are discussed in relation to Bourdieu and Passeron’s work on cultural capital and Westheimer and Kahne’s typology of three forms of citizenship. Findings: CSPE in DEIS schools was aligned with personally responsible citizenship, whereas CSPE in fee-paying schools tended to align with participatory citizenship. In other schools there were elements of both personally responsible and participatory citizenship. Research limitations: The results are not generalisable. Furthermore, the findings are based on the teachers’ espoused practice rather than observation of their actual practice.

The critique of planning and new proposals to reform the English planning system and “rethink planning from first principles” have led to the introduction of rules-based principles into what is regarded as the paradigm of a discretionary planning system, culminating in a recent White Paper, which it is claimed will create a faster and better planning system than the existing discretionary approach. But are these proposals based on an oversimplified understanding of the differences between discretionary and regulatory models, neglecting, for example, the negotiation between stakeholders and the flexibility which also exists in regulatory planning systems? Our contribution will review some of the recent changes of the English planning system and reflect on experiences with zoning in European countries to bust the myth that the planning reform claims to address: the possibility to combine faster decision making with better place making and less interference from local planning authorities.

Timely, accurate and clear communication is essential in crisis response. Given the multilingual and multicultural nature of many parts of today’s populated world, it should be evident that translation is key to enabling crisis communication. Although receiving little attention previously, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the important role of translation in responding to crises. Nevertheless, how prepared are jurisdictions for crisis translation? One way of measuring this is to use a maturity model assessment. In this article, we apply the Organisational Maturity for Disaster Preparedness (OMDP) model Mohamed & Qu, (2018) to the Republic of Ireland, assessing the level of response through documentary and interview-based evidence. All considered, we place the response between June and November 2020 at Level 2 on the OMDP. Recommendations for moving up in the maturity model are provided and could be applied to many more jurisdictions.

This study offers a close reading of the 1984 Ordo benedictionis novae domus in light of its sources in previous rituals, scripture, and the insights of the Second Vatican Council. In doing so, it explores the ritual and theological evolutions that have taken place both in Roman Catholic house blessings and in the post-conciliar reform of the Rituale Romanum viewed holistically. By analyzing one rite in depth, this study demonstrates how the ritual and theological emphases brought about by the liturgical reform of Vatican II are manifested in concrete liturgical texts and practices. The Ordo benedictionis novae domus reveals the postconciliar shifts towards holistic ecclesial participation and liturgical texts that are scripturally, Christologically, and ecclesiologically rich.

The ongoing process to negotiate a UN treaty on business and human rights has its 8th annual session this week in Geneva. Though embraced by many NGOs, this initiative has so far failed to secure widespread support amongst states with wide divergences remaining regarding the proposed instrument’s objectives and design, as well as its relationship to the UN 2011 Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, an earlier soft law instrument championed by governments, businesses and international actors. Yet there may be light on the horizon.

CAT tools have become a fixture of professional translation over the last two decades yet are still treated with suspicion or disinterest by many freelancers. Acknowledged to contribute to consistency and speed, they can constrain and otherwise negatively affect the translation process in various ways. Surveys of professional translators and observations at the workplace suggest that there is a degree of frustration associated with the use of CAT tools and room for improvement in their usability. A recent large-scale survey of professional translators included specific items for CAT tool users about whether any features of their tools were irritating or missing. Many reported that there were and also availed themselves of the opportunity to provide detailed comments about them. More than half of the CAT tool users said that they found some features irritating, and a quantitative and qualitative analysis of their comments revealed that the most common issues concerned the complexity of the user interface and segmentation. There were some differences in the responses between freelance, institutional and commercial translators but almost none across age groups. The comments about missing features also tended to be about making the tools easier to use. The focus in the survey reported here was on identifying negative aspects of tools with a view to mitigating them and tailoring the tools more to translators’ needs. However, there is also room for research exploring the positive aspects of tools in the interests of optimising their usability and reducing cognitive friction

Reflexivity involves the ability to understand how one's social locations and experiences of advantage or disadvantage have shaped the way one understands the world. The capacity for reflexivity is crucial because it informs clinical decisions, which can lead to improvements in service delivery and patient outcomes. In this article, we present a scoping study that explored educational strategies designed to enhance reflexivity among clinicians and/or health profession students. We reviewed articles and grey literature that address the question: What is known about strategies for enhancing reflexivity among clinicians and students in health professional training programs? We searched multiple databases using keywords including: reflexivity, reflective, allied health professionals, pedagogy, learning, and education. The search strategy was iterative and involved three reviews. Each abstract was independently reviewed by two team members. Sixty-eight texts met the inclusion criteria. There was great diversity among the educational strategies and among health professions. Commonalities across strategies were identified related to reflective writing, experiential learning, classroom-based activities, continuing education, and online learning. We also summarize the 19 texts that evaluated educational strategies to enhance reflexivity. Further research and education is urgently needed for more equitable and socially-just health care. The paper describes our approach to early process development in the context of the new Wyeth productivity model to deliver two New molecular entities every year. As a consequence, the number of compounds in Predevelopment and Phase 0 increased fourfold, the cycle time from Discovery to the IND was shortened by 6 months, and the quantities for the Phase-0 batch increased to include Phase I supply. our new way of working to meet this paradigm without a major increase in headcount is delineated in this article.
