The article describes the social role of shamanism in Yakutia in the 1920s. The newspaper of Autonomous Yakutia served as the main source. The research is the first-of-its-kind attempt to study Yakut shamanism as a socio-cultural phenomenon based on a comprehensive analysis of local mass media. The newspaper described the shamanic practices, people’s attitude, and anti-shamanism measures. The editorial office received many letters from villagers and medical workers that described the everyday life of the Yakuts, as well as their attitude to traditions and Soviet modernization. Some letters came from former shamans themselves and contained a public denunciation of the craft. The research relied on the historical-anthropological methodology as an integrated approach that united systematic, historical-comparative, and content-analytical methods. The information potential of the periodical press proved to be a valuable source for regional historical studies, e.g., the history of Yakutia in the first decade after the Revolution of 1917. The results develop the scientific ideas about the nature of Yakut shamanism and its historical development, thus expanding the research source base in the field of regional everyday-life history. The obtained conclusions can be used for further research of Yakut shamanism in the XX century and regional mass media as a source on everyday history.

The article deals with the role of cultural reporting in the Tirnauer Wochenblatt weekly, which was first published in German and later in Hungarian (as Nagyszombati Hetilap) in the Slovak town of Trnava between 1869 and 1918. For this purpose, the article analyses its 13th volume published in 1881 as an example. In analysing the content, four thematic areas of focus in the cultural coverage can be identified: theatre, music, literature, and other aspects of cultural life. The newspaper lacked a separate section devoted to culture and a closer examination of the German-language section of the newspaper reveals that the relevant texts largely focused on the local area. The high importance of theatrical performances is evident from the frequent reports. The same applies to musical events. Literature - apart from the publication of serialised novels in the Illustriertes Sonntagsblatt supplement - received little attention. Superregional themes only appear in the case of special events or events somehow connected with the region. The present article examines metalinguistic and metadiscursive reflections in the public discourse on climate change. The public thematisations of language play a crucial role in public discourses as they carry out strategic and action-orienting functions. The article investigates which expressions and whose language use are repeatedly the subject of metalinguistic reflections in the defined section of the discourse. In the process we also address the question of which positions and arguments are expressed or justified through the thematisation of language. Furthermore, the study investigates the metadiscursive reflections of the discourse participants, which are frequently connected with media criticism. The analysis focuses on a corpus of manually selected articles from German newspapers. In order to identify and examine the explicit thematisations of language, the paper adopts a methodological approach which combines corpus-linguistic tools with interpretive-hermeneutic analyses. The analysis reveals how the critical thematisation of the same linguistic phenomenon is in many cases used to justify conflicting positions in the discourse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hermann Hesse's travelogues and small writings (including poems, essays and newspaper articles) on the Mediterranean coasts of Italy, especially on the lagoon areas around Venice, are highly relevant for intercultural research, as they are not infiltrated by Hesse's mystical longing for transcendental unity. On the contrary, they concentrate on the cultural and individual limitations of the self, admitting ignorance, epistemic thresholds and affirming the deep experience of amazement. This applies especially to the labyrinthic territory between land and see, namely to the coast regions of Italy and its lagoons, where Hesse looses his prerogatives of interpretation, whereby his writings gain intercultural and poetic potential. The current historiographical situation in the study of the events of September 1923 in Bulgaria determined the purpose of the study, which is to analyze the publications of the September events on the pages of Soviet provincial newspapers, which reflected the official position of the authorities, who tried to form a certain image of what was happening in Bulgaria. We analyzed newspaper materials, mostly from provincial Soviet newspapers from 1923. We considered not only informational materials, editorials, but also the authors’ analytical articles and reprints from central newspapers, most often Pravda and Izvestiya. Tsankov’s assumption of power on 12 June 1923 and his repressive policy toward peasant revolts and communists placed news from Bulgaria among the most topical, along with reports from Poland and, of course, Germany. The newspapers were forced to admit that the Bulgarian Communists were not ready for an uprising, although as early as August 1923 it had been decided to prepare an armed uprising in the next 2-3 years. With some delay the Soviet newspapers began to write about the success of the uprising, defining these events as a civil war and even a revolution. The defeat that followed the uprising was explained by the Bulgarian and Soviet Communists in a completely biased way. The leaders of the uprising, Kolarov and Dimitrov, saw the cause in the betrayal of one of the members of the Sofia Revolutionary Committee. Others looked for these causes in insufficient organization and lack of weapons. All this is evidence not only of a superficial assessment of events, but also of a wishful thinking. The optimism reflected in the publications about the fate of the proletarian revolution in Bulgaria in the future also testifies to this.

This article argues that the British press created a sense of celebrity around the royal family in the late eighteenth century by providing the British public with extensive information on the private lives of royalty. Analysing newspaper articles and printed images, it examines three case studies from the period: scandalous royal romances, the madness of George III, and the tragic death of a princess. These case studies highlight the increasing exposition of the private as well as public and political aspects of royalty at the intersection of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The article explores how intense media coverage of private royal matters created a discernible culture of “modern celebrity” in relation to the royal family in this era, a culture which ran counter to the official, traditional image of the monarchy. It considers the extent to which this media coverage forged emotional connections between the royal family and the British public, as well as examining the negative impact that media exposure could have on perceptions of the monarchy.

The present work by Qiu Kuanyong examines the discursive construction of terrorism in German and Chinese media. The newspapers Die Welt and Süddeutsche Zeitung in Germany, as well as the People's Daily in China, are analyzed. The results show that the perception of terrorism in German media has changed after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and terrorism is defined as a communication strategy. In Chinese media, terrorism is discussed as a threat to stability, and the fight against terrorism by the US and Europe is portrayed as self-serving. The work provides insight into the differences between the two countries and allows for a deeper understanding of the Chinese terrorism discourse. [Extracted from the article]

In der Pressedokumentation beim Deutschen Bundestag wurde im Zusammenhang mit dem Umzug des deutschen Parlaments von Bonn nach Berlin im Jahr 1999 ein elektronisches Produktions-, Recherche- und Archivsystem eingeführt. In einem problemorientierten Rückblick werden die damit verbundenen Veränderungen in Beziehung gesetzt zu den an seine Einführung geknüpften Zielen und Erwartungen. In diesem zweiten Teil geht es um die Auswirkungen auf die Praxis der inhaltlichen Erschließung von Zeitungsartikeln und die damit verbundenen Recherchemöglichkeiten. Dabei werden Probleme bei der Verwendung des Pressethesaurus erörtert. In connection with the relocation of the German Parliament from Bonn to Berlin in 1999, an electronic production, research and archiving system was introduced in the press documentation at the German Bundestag. In a problem-oriented retrospective, the changes associated with this are set in relation to the goals and expectations attached to its introduction. This second part deals with the effects on the practice of indexing newspaper articles and the resulting search options. Problems with the use of the press thesaurus are discussed. The issue of gender inequality in Russia’s Muslim regions is of great scientific interest and practical significance, and sociologists need to generalize the experience of the previous decades. Such multinational region as Dagestan provides a lot of useful data on the matter in question. This article describes the first attempt of the regional historiography to analyze the activities of Dagestan mass media to promote gender equality in the 1960s, e.g., in secondary schools, universities, socio-political life, culture, and family life. The author analyzed newspaper publications and documents from the Central State Archive of the Republic of Dagestan. The materials provided an objective scientific picture of the social landscape. The author relied on the principles of scientific objectivity and historicism and used comparative-historical, descriptive, and systematic research methods. All mass media obviously experienced some difficulties in covering the gender issues. However, the analysis revealed some positive trends and results in the struggle for gender equality in Dagestan, e.g., in the sanitary culture of urban and rural settlements. Still, this socio-political and socio-cultural issue remained unresolved by the end of the 1960s.

This article presents evidence-based research on the journalistic approach to the so-called "gender-equal language" in the minority press of Germans in Hungary. Regarding content and data, the study originates from the project Deutsche Mediensprache im Ausland - am Beispiel der deutschen Minderheitenpresse in Mittel- und Osteuropa [German Media Language Abroad - through the Example of the German Minority Press in Middle and Eastern Europe] (University of Erfurt). Within the five newspapers that paradigmatically represent the Hungarian-German press, it becomes apparent that the generic masculine form still dominates. The journalistic texts show a distinctive gender mix, i.e. an (intended or randomly created) vivid multitude of solutions. These insecurities could be connected to (a) the nominal gender category not being part of the Hungarian language and (b) the discussion surrounding gender roles in Hungary not reaching the same intensity as in the social sphere of German-speaking countries. This paper introduces the Early Chinese Periodicals Online database (ECPO), based at the University of Heidelberg. It offers a short overview of the development of this research-driven database as it grew to incorporate additional projects. Today, the ECPO hosts a variety of textual and visual sources from the Republican period (1912 – 1949), as well as biographical data of twentieth-century academic and political elites. We aim to show how this database can be used and extended to pursue historical network research, even for scholars previously unfamiliar with digital infrastructures. The concluding part discusses privacy concerns in data curation and management, which are increasingly relevant for studies of twentieth-century actors and limit the potential to release and reuse these datasets, especially if they pertain to the People’s Republic of China’s political history.

Supplements to German newspapers in Lodz in the interwar period promoted an extremely modern type of woman, in line with the latest world trends. German magazines „Die Welt im Bilde. Sonntagsbeilage zur Neuen Lodzer Zeitung" and „Illustrierte Wochenblatt. Beilage zur Neuen Lodzer Zeitung" registered changes in lifestyle and propagated them among Lodz readers. The fashion promoted by Lodz accessories and lifestyle did not differ in any way from the latest European and world models. It was an expression of striving for modernity, for changing the way of thinking not only about women, but about the whole society. Introducing modern ideas into magazines resulted in the dissolution of old and obsolete forms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this article is to explore the depiction of nature and its elements in Klostermann's early German short stories. These stories were mostly published during the 1880s in the Prague-based German-language newspaper Politik. Eleven of the stories, published by Gerold Dvorak at the Stutz Publishing House in Passau under the title Faustins Geschichten aus dem Böhmerwald (2003), were selected for the research. The history of Freemasonry in Banat still hides many unknown things. The historical course of many lodges in this region is not yet fully known. If we know enough data about some lodges such as the one in Reșiţa, those in Timișoara and others, we have too little data about some lodges, such as the one in Caransebeș or Lipova. Moreover, the museum artifacts that come from lesser-known lodges allow us to reconstruct their history and even the history of certain characters. In this sense, the museum institutions from Great Britain are very helpful; they keep in their collections medals of some lodges from Banat or even original documents, lists of lodges from Banat, etc. These artifacts and documents have not been studied so far and represent a novelty in reconstructing the history of Banat Freemasonry. Examples are the medals of the Irenea lodge in Caransebeș and Concordia in Lipova. The history of these lodges is known only in fragments, and the study of these medals allows us to complete the data on these little known lodges. Another piece unknown to the Romanian academic public is a medal of the „Three white lilies” lodge from Timișoara. The Museum of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Worcestershire and the Museum of Freemasonry in London are very helpful in this regard by offering the opportunity to study the pieces kept in their collections. In our study, we also present the work of a Serbian Freemason from Paris, D. Tomitch, on the rights and interests of Serbs in Banat Timisoara on certain territories within Romania. The English Masonic press is another resource that has not been fully exploited so far. Usually, studies on the history of Romanian Freemasonry cite foreign literature, but very little or almost no Masonic foreign press, especially the old press. However, in the British Masonic press, we find valuable references to Freemasonry in Romania and including Banat, from different historical periods. In the case of Banat Freemasonry, the references in the British press date from the second half of the 19th century. We find references regarding the lodges in Arad, Timișoara, Oraviţa, Lipova, and Caransebeș. All this information, compared to what we know so far, gives us the chance to detect the mistakes made in previous chronological dating but also to complete what we lacked in terms of information.
