In Book I of Plato's Republic, Thrasymachus' proposal opens an important field of analysis within political philosophy, as it is through his discourse that justice becomes associated with the existing government policy in cities, given that, regardless of the political constitution, force always belongs to the governments and it is these who make the laws that it is fair for the governed to obey. This work aims, first, to analyze Thrasymachus' proposal for the whole of political philosophy and, second, to relate this proposal with Machiavelli's The Prince.

Embora vivamos em uma era dominada pelo sistema econômico capitalista, pouco se discute sobre a necessidade de as pessoas adquirirem conhecimentos financeiros básicos para prosperar nesse contexto. É cada vez mais comum que os jovens tenham um contato precoce com o universo financeiro, seja por meio de compras, aplicativos de pagamento ou investimentos. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo propõe uma sequência didática direcionada aos estudantes do 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental, focada no tema do Planejamento Financeiro e utilizando reportagens atuais como ponto de partida para introduzir conceitos de Educação Financeira. Para fundamentar essa proposta, foram conduzidas pesquisas exploratórias e bibliográficas, visando compreender os fundamentos teóricos da Educação Financeira e da sequência didática necessária para sua implementação. Essas pesquisas forneceram subsídios para a elaboração de uma sequência didática abrangente, que engloba atividades de análise de reportagens, discussões em grupo, pesquisa e apresentação de resultados. Em uma pesquisa futura, pretende-se aplicar essa proposta didática em sala de aula e analisar os resultados obtidos. O objetivo é aprimorar o ensino da Educação Financeira, identificando abordagens e estratégias mais eficazes na promoção do pensamento crítico e reflexivo dos estudantes em relação às questões financeiras. Acredita-se que, por meio dessa abordagem contextualizada e crítica, os estudantes serão capacitados não apenas a enfrentar os desafios econômicos presentes, mas também a compreender o impacto das decisões financeiras em suas vidas e na sociedade.

Covid-19 pandemic has put humanity in check, forcing the entire world to implement social distancing and isolation measures, affecting the planet's economy and public health. Big pharma financed, on many occasions, with public money, got involved in a runaway race to get a vaccine that could return the planet to the long-awaited normality, leaving their coffers full in the process. This paper analyzes the consequences of preventing the release of the patent for this vaccine in relation to the human right to use advances in science and technology. Using a qualitative methodology, with a descriptive scope, based on the bibliographical review, the contrast that occurs between the rights of peoples to receive the vaccine against Covid-19, as part of the right to to the use of advances in science and technology as a third generation human right, and the interests of large pharmaceutical companies and private business conglomerates, in the light of Law, ethics and public health, discerning on a controversial issue that has humanity in suspense. Concluded that what is at stake goes beyond economic interests, since those who own and maintain ownership of patents will have an advantage in terms of geopolitics and, incidentally, greater control over biopolitics.

The present work aims at studying the myth of Gyges’ ring from Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s work The Reveries of a solitary Walker. Gyges’ ring is a magic artefact, allowing its bearer to be visible or invisible according to his will. The ring’s myth is portraited for the first time in the Second Book of Plato’s Republic. Thusly, our article is divided in two parts: the first one presents an analysis of the Republic observing its challenge of justice and the relation it holds with the art of ruling; the second part presents an investigation of Rousseau’s work to show how he had absorbed the ring’s myth. The main objective of our work is the comparison between Plato’s and Rousseau’s view of Gyges’ ring, and the investigation of the concept of nature as one of the pillars of the social contract theory. As results we present the way Rousseau answers to the challenge of justice from the concept of justice within the soul, whereas no harm could be done to others. In his reflexion on the ring, Rousseau seems to point at the existence of an interior justice according to its “natural inclination”, opposite to any obligation of the positive law among men. Therefore, one needs to observe that Rousseau is defending justice according to the natural rights holding that any contract established among men should be according to nature. This agrees with our thesis of a possible political ontology based on firstly, the concept of a universal justice, and secondly, on the art of ruling according to justice.

Este artigo investiga a maneira pela qual o filósofo Michel Foucault interrogou as experiências da vida política de seu tempo. Iniciamos por analisar os princípios metodológicos estabelecidos em suas pesquisas ainda nos anos 1960; em seguida, passamos à investigação sobre como esses princípios direcionam a pesquisa foucaultiana para o que ele denominou de relações de poder; abordamos o conceito de dispositivo por entender que é a partir dessa noção que passa a ser possível a investigação de diversos investimentos de controle e governo que atuam em circunscrições sociais específicas. A partir dessas discussões, buscamos evidenciar a produtividade da crítica foucaultiana para a compreensão dos jogos políticos em andamento na contemporaneidade.

O presente estudo procura refletir acerca da relação entre narrativa ficcional e história em K.: Relato de uma busca, de Bernardo Kucinski. Nossa perspectiva será refletir acerca do modo como o enredo e a forma de organização da narrativa contribuem para pensar a relação entre romance e história; esta como um discurso não-linear, não objetivo e elaborado a partir de um lugar. Para isso, dentre outros escritos, contribuirão as reflexões de Michel de Certeau (1982) sobre a operação historiográfica e as de Peter Burke (1992) acerca da nova história frente o paradigma tradicional de escrita da História, ao lado das análises elaboradas por Seymour Menton (1993) sobre o Novo Romance Histórico da América Latina.

• Young people are often accused of a lack of interest and disengagement from public affairs. • Little is known about the opportunities and experiences for youngsters to be more engaged. • Citizenship education has been at the centre of educational proposals in many European countries. • The investments made in education policies, concerning citizenship education seem to fall short. Purpose: We intend to bring into debate what seems to be a paradoxical relation between the lack of youth civic and political participation, and the current disinvestment in the effective implementation of citizenship education policies. Design: A comparative framework between four European countries concerning youth civic and political participation, and citizenship education policies, including the involvement of NGOs in youth civic education. Findings: Data shows that young people’s (apparent) participatory apathy may have other readings or other meanings. Young people seem to be increasingly looking for more dynamic and less traditional forms of participation, and there is a need for citizenship education policies to be more grounded in this reality. Implications: Overall, we might be facing a paradox where educational policies seem to be tailor-made for young people who do not actually relate to them.

O artigo analisa o fenômeno da participação minoritária do Estado nas sociedades empresárias. Aborda-se: (i) as principais ca- racterísticas das empresas estatais e o que as diferencia das empresas controladas; (ii) a forma como o Estado pode assumir a condição de acionista controlador sem a maioria do capital social e as implicações desse controle no regime jurídico dessas sociedades; (iii) o regime jurídico das sociedades com participação estatal minoritária sob controle privado e as principais causas que justificam a participação estatal des- provida de poder de controle. Conclui-se que a empresa controlada pelo Estado sofre influxo parcial do regime publicístico, eis que o Estado não pode se desvincular, como acionista contro- lador, dos princípios que regem sua intervenção no domínio econômico. Por outro lado, a participação estatal minoritária não dispensa o Esta- do de adotar práticas de governança e de con- trole proporcionais à relevância, à materialidade e aos riscos do negócio.

El 8 de abril de 2021 se cumplieron 110 años del nacimiento de Emil Cioran. Para conmemorar esta fecha, el Portal E. M. Cioran Brasil (2010- 2021), por medio de su creador y editor, Rodrigo Menezes (Brasil), ha invitado a Leobardo Villegas (México) para hablar de algunos temas de gran importancia en el contexto del pensamiento del filósofo rumano, a saber, el gnosticismo, el ateísmo, la mística y el escepticismo. El diálogo que viene a continuación es la versión escrita (ampliada) de este evento, el cual ha quedado grabado en la red de Internet.

Nosso propósito é interrogar de que maneira Platão e Aristóteles fundamentam a análise dos regimes e a distinção do melhor regime na ideia de justiça. Como veremos, a justiça é entendida por ambos tanto como ordem da natureza como virtude no ânimo e precisamente por ser tanto virtude no ânimo dos cidadãos como ordenação interna do cosmos é que a Justiça permite avaliar a natureza da Cidade.

O objetivo do trabalho é recompor a abordagem cartesiana acerca da história, para identificar e discutir as consequências da sua exclusão do projeto de reformulação do conhecimento pretendido pelo autor do Discurso do Método, especialmente os efeitos para um pensamento posterior, que irá se contrapor à ideia de história como simples fato natural.

A ficção como tema deste ensaio compreende as fronteiras estabelecidas entre filosofia e literatura no horizonte comum da experimentação do pensamento enquanto tal. A abordagem deste tema traduz os desdobramentos de uma hipótese levantada por Raymond Bellour em torno de um aspecto da construção do pensamento de Foucault. Isto é, a ficção enquanto uma forma legítima de pensamento, a qual se constitui no plano da experiência das palavras e do vazio da linguagem e aqui se revela como esboço de uma experimentação histórica. Notória é a declaração de Foucault de que ele não faz “outra coisa senão ficções”.

RESUMO Em nosso artigo, pretendemos verificar as teses de Trasímaco sobre a justiça e se estas são consistentes entre si. Para isso, há de se observar a relação da justiça com o governo e a força (krátos) que a determina. O intuito é reavivar as discussões hodiernas sobre as teses de Trasímaco dentro da filosofia platônica, assim como demonstrar sua importância para o âmbito da filosofia política.

O presente trabalho examina como argumentos antifisicalistas representam a tensão entre certos aspectos da nossa vida cotidiana (fenomenalidade) e a tese metafísica do Fisicalismo. O debate acerca do caráter subjetivo da consciência, ou do também chamado “Problema Difícil da Consciência” (CHALMERS, 1996), é considerado um dos maiores desafios à tese fisicalista. Muitos filósofos pensam que o problema é “difícil” pois a questão não pode ser resolvida empiricamente, ela é inteiramente conceitual. O presente artigo é dividido em duas partes. Na primeira parte analiso a versão de Chalmers do argumento daquilo que pode ser concebível, bem como o aparato semântico bidimensional necessário para conectar os domínios conceituais e modais. Plato’s division of goods performed by Glaucon in the Republic involves three kinds of goods: the first kind would be desirable for their own sake; the second, desirable in themselves and in their consequences, and the third kind, only desirable in their consequences. The problem to understand it is thus presented: in which of these kinds is justice observed, and which one provides happiness to men. According to Socrates, justice should be placed on the second kind of good if men want to be happy. However, it is not in this way that the many (polloi) hold justice, for they include it in the third kind. Having this difference under perspective, Glaucon defends this point of view, willing afterwards to listen to Socrates’ refutation of his argument and the defence of justice as being a good desirable in themselves and their consequences. Errata a MENEZES, L. M. B. R. (2020). A consistência das teses de Trasímaco sobre a justiça no livro I da República de Platão. Archai 30, e03001.

Na introdução de seu livro Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes elabora uma precisa analogia entre corpos, sendo o Estado um corpo político semelhante ao corpo natural. Para isso, o Estado possuiria uma vida artificial análoga à vida natural que permitiria o seu próprio movimento artificial. Com o surgimento do neoliberalismo no século XX, temos uma intensificação das regras do mercado sobre o poder político, o que levou inevitavelmente a ruptura com o contrato social que garantia direitos para toda população. Aproveitando a pandemia de covid-19, vamos retomar a analogia hobbesiana entre o corpo natural doente e a doença que aflige o corpo político: a sedição.

O presente estudo consiste em uma análise do processo de composição do Timeu-Crítias de Platão, sob o ponto de vista da modelagem do discurso. Pretende-se mostrar que o diálogo é marcado por uma engenhosa articulação de técnicas de composição, que combinam os aspectos pictorial e dramático da mímesis poética. Estabelecendo as Panateneias como referência implícita, a obra apresenta a performance de uma sequência de narrativas, produzidas como verdadeiras imagens discursivas. A originalidade platônica revela-se no Timeu-Crítias, portanto, no desempenho de uma construção formal ao mesmo tempo dramática e imagética, mediante um singular agenciamento mimético de formas do discurso.

A discussão entre Trasímaco e Sócrates no Livro I da República de Platão dá vigor à questão da justiça iniciada com Céfalo. Trasímaco é um personagem importante da obra, pois vai relacionar a justiça ao governo da cidade. Isso faz com que a justiça saia da esfera individual e entre na esfera pública. Em nosso artigo, pretendemos verificar as teses de Trasímaco sobre a justiça e se estas são consistentes entre si. O problema da consistência das teses é antigo entre os comentadores e apresenta diferentes soluções. Nosso intuito é propor uma solução para o problema e relacionar isto à arte do governo proposta por Trasímaco. Isso nos permite verificar a maneira pela qual Sócrates e Trasímaco diferem entre si em suas propostas de governo e dos tipos de governante. Desse modo, nosso trabalho pretende contribuir com a literatura platonista sobre o papel ocupado por Trasímaco dentro da obra de Platão.

Desde a publicação dos Ditos e Escritos, o lugar da literatura na obra de Michel Foucault possui uma posição bem definida nas pesquisas acadêmicas, nas quais se ressalta sobretudo a abordagem nietzscheana da leitura proposta pelo filósofo. Recorrendo a novas publicações e aos manuscritos inéditos do Fonds Foucault-BnF, este texto enfocará o tema da literatura sob um outro prisma, à partir do estruturalismo da análise literária e do contexto filosófico da revista Tel Quel em sua relação com o Nouveau Roman. Enfatizando a importância do conceito de chr(38)quot;distânciachr(38)quot; em seus escritos sobre a literatura, discutir-se-á como várias das noções criadas por Foucault se encontram em diálogo com esta constelação teórica mais ampla. A relação entre a estrutura e o acontecimento, enquanto par conceitual que se encontrava no centro dos debates filosóficos nos anos 1960, nos guiará na compreensão das tensões e das adesões da metodologia foucaltiana no que tange à análise estrutural

ABSTRACT This paper aims at exposing a strategy to organize the debate around physicalism. Our starting point (following Stoljar 2010) is the pre-philosophical notion of physicalism, which is typically formulated in the form of slogans. Indeed, philosophers debating metaphysics have paradigmatically introduced the subject with aid of slogans such as “there is nothing over and above the physical”, “once every physical aspect of the world is settled, every other aspect will follow”, “physicalism is the thesis that everything is physical”. These ideas are very intuitive but they are, of course, far from being a satisfactory metaphysical conception of Physicalism. For that end, we will begin with the definition of physicalism as the thesis that everything is physical, following Stoljar, we should be able to respond to one central question: how to interpret the physicalist claim that everything in physical.

According to Glaucon’s conception of justice, the government is constituted by a contract which determines the legal and the just. From its constitution the ruler may control the subjects’ justice without being subject to the contract himself. To reinforce Thrasymachus’ speech Glaucon will offer Socrates a challenge where the latter has to prove that justice is superior to injustice. Thus, it is Socrates’ task to show this under any counterfactual circumstance, always bringing benefit to the one who acts justly. The difficulty in responding to the challenge proposed by Glaucon is shown by the case in the Republic where the fulfillment of justice seems not to bring benefits, but penalty to the agent. This is precisely the case of the Philosopher Ruler and his coercion (ananke) to rule. For that one must understand the reason why the philosopher is coerced to rule, not as a matter of choice, but something whose denial is made impossible due to justice. Socrates’ solution to the challenge of justice starts from the definitions of political justice, where each citizen is compelled to do his own duty, and psychic justice, defined as a harmony between the parts of the soul. Our argument shows that the justice within the philosopher’s soul itself is justified by the necessity of fulfilling the justice in Kallipolis, as well as allowing good government.

Trata-se de analisar o filme “Aniquilação” (2018) à luz da filosofia trágica de Clément Rosset (1939-2018), particularmente seu livro de 1973, A anti-natureza. Trata-se, ao mesmo tempo, de uma homenagem ao filósofo, que faleceu semanas após o lançamento de “Aniquilação”, em março de 2018. Recorre-se ao conceito rossetiano de “anti-natureza” (anti-nature) para discutir a temática de “Aniquilação” e levantar toda uma problemática concernente à antiga questão filosófica que se interroga acerca da natureza e do ser, enfim, da realidade última do que existe.

Purpose: To map and discuss core narratives and challenges crossing the field of DE in Portugal, from a postcolonial stance. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis is based on a qualitative approach, comprising two studies: interviews with experts and online analysis of development NGOs active in the field of DE. Findings: DE is discussed as a set of theories and practices under reconfiguration in terms of scope, aims, actors and educational approaches. There is the need for reconnecting with and addressing the legacies of DE, particularly, given its formal and informal emergence; this is an inevitably conflictual process involving a balance between tradition and change. Higher education is considered a relevant actor in strengthening the field. Research implications: A postcolonial stance is suggested as valuable orientation for actors, organizations and research in the field of DE, considering its transitional status and an inherently conflictive nature.

Purpose: To investigate how EU related contents are represented in Portuguese upper secondary school textbooks of History and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Design/methodology/approach: The study performs a textbook analysis on two History textbooks and three EFL textbooks to explore if and how EU related topics are addressed. The methodological approach was mainly qualitative, based on a content analysis of the textbooks, but also includes some quantitative data (e.g., number of paragraphs) to determine the importance given to European topics in each of the selected school subjects. Findings: EFL textbooks have a residual approach to EU topics that is mainly focused in students’ mobility. History textbooks, while containing a significant amount of information about the EU, present it mainly in a non-confrontational perspective and do not prioritize the development of students’ critical thinking about the EU. Our data also points to a predominance of national level citizenship related content, with European citizenship being briefly and normatively presented to the students. Research limitations/implications: EFL is attended by almost 100% of students in the academic track of secondary education, but History is a curricular subject only available to 25-30% of the students; as such, our findings refer to a specific group. Practical implications: Textbooks should include more information about the actual problems and challenges of the EU to foster the development of students’ critical thinking about the EU.

This paper investigates the concept(s) of intercultural competence held by undergraduate students from teacher education courses in English and German languages. To this end, first and fourth year undergraduates of English and German from a federal university in Rio de Janeiro answered two versions of a questionnaire designed to lead students to inductively formulate what they understood as intercultural competence and how they would help their future students develop this competence. Responses were submitted to content analysis and the four groups were compared. Results show that students of English and German who participated in this study hold different perspectives on intercultural competence and one of the reasons for that may be attributed to their educational background.

Purpose: This article explores different strands of educational discourse about sexual diversity in Portuguese schools, from the students’ perspectives. Method: The methodological approach consisted in conducting focus groups discussions: 36 with 232 young students (H = 106, M = 126) in 12 public secondary schools. Findings: Students reveal a polyphony of discourses that gravitate between liberal acceptance, conditional acceptance and intolerance. Research implications: Attention is drawn not only to discriminatory processes that question school as a democratic place for LGBT youth, but also to the gap between what is legally decreed and a lack of know-how in the approach to sexual diversity in school.

Filósofos, educadores e curriculistas, comprometidos com o paradigma da educação emancipatória de vários países, compartilham a ideia de que o pensamento de Paulo Freire está sempre em movimento e dialoga com diferentes questões contemporâneas, assim como traz elementos norteadores para a construção da teoria curricular crítica e eticamente empenhada na humanização dos sujeitos. Nessa direção, o presente artigo analisa os elementos que configuram a proposta educacional libertadora e o diálogo como uma das categorias fundantes do pensar freireano para tratar das questões sobre o currículo na perspectiva crítico-emancipatória. A pesquisa privilegia a abordagem de natureza qualitativa e elege, como procedimento investigativo, o estudo bibliográfico. Para a análise dos dados, toma como referência a técnica de Análise Temática na perspectiva de Laurence Bardin.

Em relação aos problemas estéticos da fi losofi a da arte em geral, a música sempre se desenvolveu com certa autonomia. Sua afi nidade semântica com as outras artes sempre foi delicada e problemática, fazendo com que, na história da estética, ela oscilasse entre os extremos da “hierarquia” das artes. Tal particularidade ocorre porque a música sempre carregou um status próprio, conseqüência, principalmente, de dois problemas: a alta complexidade dos meios técnicos com os quais se realiza e a impossibilidade de expressar fatos racionais da linguagem cotidiana. A discussão acerca da superioridade ou inexpressividade da música como expressão artística pode ser colocada também em linhas gerais através da dicotomia racionalidade/irracionalidade: valorizada em seu caráter assemântico e não conceitual ela estaria no topo das artes, mas, no entendimento racional, ela cai para o último. Independente da opinião de tal ou qual autor no que diz respeito à expressividade da música como linguagem artística, essa discussão nos permite identifi car qual é o seu lugar na história do pensamento racional, bem como interpretar essa racionalidade partindo de um objeto que é tanto altamente racional (sua complexidade técnica) quanto nãoconceitual (sua assemanticidade).

Purpose: This article explores the classical relationship between socioeconomic status and political domains, and the need to include different variables (contextual and individual) to measure the effect of economic and cultural capitals on youth participation and knowledge. Method: A multivariate analysis of covariance was performed on a sample of 732 Portuguese students, from Grades 8 and 11, in order to analyse how different socioeconomic variables related to family and schooling contexts have an effect on their political knowledge and experiences. Findings: The article highlights the differential role of socioeconomic variables on political knowledge and participatory patterns. Low economic capital instigates participation, while high cultural capital is related with higher political literacy. However, both forms of capital interact with the schooling context, revealing more complex patterns of behaviour and knowledge in students attending public and private schools.

Purpose: To contribute for the ongoing discussion about associations between art education and citizenship education, presenting Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, as a theatre method that exercises active democracy by means of promoting epistemological development merging Art, Citizenship and Education. Design: Drawing form a selected set of relevant concepts and data in the fields of psychology, education, arts and performance studies, amongst others, the advantages and limitations of the artistic practice of theatre are analyzed in terms of its impact in epistemological and socio-cognitive development. Findings: A literature review shows several studies that evidence the benefits of artistic practices, namely theatre, in several indicators. Despite these evidences formal educative contexts, rooted in traditional pedagogic paradigms, resist to the entrance of arts, such as the performative, in school curricula, as well as other interactive practices indispensable in the promotion of participative citizenship. Research implications: Present existing methods alternative to formal education, exemplified by the method of the theatre of the oppressed, that aim to develop art, education and citizenship in one same practice. Practical implications: Evidence the need to reconsider formal education curricula with the objective of enhancing epistemological development, empowerment, autonomy and active citizenship.

Este trabalho pretende analisar a relação entre a crise do Estado e o surgimento de poderes paralelos não regulados, com ênfase nos meios de comunicação de massas. Explicar-se-á o fenômeno de desintegração da opinião pública pelos meios de comunicação de massas. Será ressaltada a necessidade de regulamentação dos poderes midiáticos, em especial através de mecanismos que inibam a concentração proprietária dos meios de comunicação de massas e a sua relação com poderes econômicos e políticos. Concluir-se-á que o controle dos poderes midiáticos é meio hábil para reconstruir uma opinião pública legitimamente formada.This paper aims to analyse the link between the crisis of the State and the emergence of unregulated parallel powers, with emphasis on mass media. It will be explained the disintegration of public opinion by mass media. It will be shown the need for regulation of media power, particularly through mechanisms that inhibit the ownership concentration of mass media companies and its association with economic and political power. It will be proposed that the control of media power is a valid expedient to rearrange a legitimately formed public opinion.

Even if recently the notions of citizenship and community have become buzzwords of very positive connotation, significant tensions underlie any ofthem: between homogeneity and difference, belonging and diversity,inclusion and exclusion and, more recently, between freedom and security.Real communities are places of cooperation and mutual recognition as muchas they are places of inevitable conflict, social control and exclusion.Following an ecological and contextual perspective, and a relationaldefinition of community, concepts such as sense of community and socialcapital are explored. An analysis of citizen’s participation in theircommunities illustrates significant dimensions of participation: power,dialogue, initiative, formality, pluralism and time. The discussion considershow these dimensions might contribute to making community organizationsturn into 'schools of democracy' (de Tocqueville 2000), and illustrates thispotential with young migrants, as long as the diversity of diverse migrantgroups is not only recognized but furthered.

Seu caráter complexo fez com que se desenvolvessem diversas histórias a seu respeito, sendo a mais famosa aquela que conta a maneira como ele chegou ao poder. Sua fama percorreu o mundo grego e influenciou a poesia lírica de sua época e, posteriormente, a história, a filosofia e a retórica, principalmente no que diz respeito ao seu poder e riqueza. Em Platão, Gyges aparece ligado à narrativa de Glaúcon no Livro II da República (359b-360b), onde este conta os feitos daquele para se tornar o soberano da Lídia. No entanto, uma dificuldade na passagem 359d faz com a identificação direta de Gyges com a narrativa seja prejudicada. Pretendemos através deste trabalho apresentar algumas propostas para a passagem, utilizando-se para isso não só do texto de Platão como das fontes líricas e históricas anteriores a ele.Gyges was the first tyrant reigning in Lydia by the Mermenadae's around the seventh century BC. He was also the first great barbarian whom the Greeks made contact to. His complex character has made the development of several stories about him, and the most famous was the one which tells how he came to power. His glory traveled the Greek world and influenced the lyric poetry of his age. Thereafter, history, philosophy and rhetoric were likely influenced, mostly about his power and wealth. In Plato Gyges appear in Glaucon's narrative in Book II of Republic (359b-360b) which tells the deeds of the one to become the sovereign of Lydia. However, one difficulty on the passage 359d which makes the direct identification of Gyges with the narrative has been mistaken. We aim through this work to present some proposals to the passage mentioned using not only Plato's text, but the lyric and historical sources before him.
