The article "Deep Sea Mining and International Law" deals with the legal regulations for the deep seabed outside national waters. These regulations are established in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 and are further specified by the secondary law of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). It is proposed to consider the oceans and seas as the "common heritage of mankind" in order to make the natural resources of the seabed and subsoil accessible to the entire human race. The ISA, headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica, is responsible for the management and control of activities related to the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources in the deep seabed. There are discussions about regulations for the exploitation of these resources, while demands for a moratorium or a general ban on deep sea mining are being voiced. Criticism is directed at the secretariat of the ISA for continuing to focus on ecologically sustainable conditions, despite the fact that the deep-sea ecosystem is still largely unexplored. It is recommended to use a modern interpretation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea based on scientific knowledge. [Extracted from the article]
