The association between extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) and disease activity suggest a common pathogenetic link with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We report on the association of EIMs and anaemia with long-term disease outcomes, including treatment steps, hospitalization, and surgery in the prospective population-based IBD inception cohort from Veszprem province.Data of 678 incident IBD patients (Crohn's disease/ulcerative colitis(CD/UC): 331/347) diagnosed from 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2012 were analyzed (CD: m/f: 176/155, median age at diagnosis: 28, IQR: 21-40 years, disease duration: 6, IQR: 2-9 years; UC: m/f: 200/147, median age at diagnosis: 36, IQR: 26-50 years, duration: 7, IQR: 4-10 years).EIMs were present in 30% of the CD and 17.3% of the UC patients. In CD, female gender (p = 0.02) need for steroid (p 0.001) and azathioprine (AZA) (p = 0.02), while in UC, young age at onset (p = 0.03), extensive disease (p = 0.003), female gender (p = 0.07), need for steroids (p 0.001) and AZA (p = 0.004) and need for IBD-related hospitalization (p = 0.01) were associated with the presence of EIMs. Anaemia was present in 56.7% of the CD and 30.2% of the UC patients. In both CD and UC anaemia was associated with age at onset (pCD = 0.001, pUC = 0.04), disease location/extent (pCD = 0.02, pUC 0.001), steroid and AZA use (for both pCD,UC 0.001), need for surgery/colectomy (pCD 0.001, pUC = 0.002) and hospitalization (pCD = 0.004, pUC 0.001) and in CD, it was associated with anti TNF therapy(p = 0.002).The presence of EIMs was associated with disease phenotype in UC and with treatment strategy in both CD and UC. Additionally, anaemia was associated with hospitalization and surgery in both CD and UC, suggesting that EIMs and anaemia may be helpful in stratifying disease severity in IBD.

Beginning with dental lesions, age- and sexspecific prevalences of the most important chronic diseases of the digestive system are exposed and discussed, basing upon the results of an epidemiological study on 2,800 citizens of Vienna at the age of 25, 40 and 60 years respectively.

In the course of a health study carried out 1979 in Vienna on more than 2,500 persons at the age of 25, 40 and 60 years respectively, the following blood parameters were investigated: erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum iron, OGTT, HbA1, uric acid, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, SGOT, SGPT, AP, creatinine, BUN; furthermore the usual clinical urine findings. Results are exposed and discussed.

Blood samples of 975 Viennese hospital staff members were tested for the presence of hepatitis B antigen and antibodies; a prevalence of 26% was found. It is estimated at 20% for the entire hospital personnel in Vienna. The prevalence of hepatitis B antigen and antibodies indicates the risk of infection and varies markedly with the type of hospital department; it is, however, significantly higher in every department than in the ambient population. There were no substantial differences between occupational groups, e.g. doctors, nurses, cleaning personnel etc. However, a close correlation was found to on-job time and to age. Hepatitis B vaccination after virological-serological testing is recommended for the entire hospital personnel.

In the course of the "Vienna Health Study 1979" 1261 males and 1548 females divided into 3 age categories (25, 40 and 60 years), were investigated for serum iron level, RBC, leucocytes, haemoglobin, haematocrit, MCH, MVC, MCHC, GOT, GPT and AP. These parameters were evaluated in correlation to the drinking habits of each proband. Significant correlations were found between alcohol consumption and serum iron (elevation in most cases), RBC (decrease), MCV (elevation) and GOT (elevation).

Serum uric acid determinations were made in 2,626 subjects (males and females) within the framework of the "Wiener Gesundheitsstudie 1979", at three distinct age levels (25, 40 and 60 years). The serum uric acid level in male subjects was found to have an arithmetic mean of 6.25 mg/dl, whereas in female subjects the serum uric acid levels, with an arithmetic mean of 4.66 mg/dl, were considerably lower. Levels of more than 7 mg/dl occurred in 3% of the female subjects, whereas hyperuricaemia was detected in 25.4% of the males. In addition, hyperuricaemia was correlated with other risk factors. A relation between hyperuricaemia and coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction was found in the subgroup of the 60 year-old men. There is, furthermore, a pronounced association between hyperuricaemia and a tendency to overweight. The "protective effect" of diabetes mellitus on hyperuricaemia was confirmed only in the subgroup of the 60 year-old men.

The first part of the paper deals with measurements of 152 radiographs. It was found that the conventional views of the lumbar spine in two planes can demonstrate only 49.1% of the articular joints. Oblique views in two planes increase the accuracy to 88.7%. In view of the relatively high accuracy of the oblique views, these were used as the basis for a new functional method for examining the intervertebral joints. For this examination, oblique views of the lumbar spine are taken in the lordotic and kyphotic positions. The position of the patient during the examination is described in detail. In the second part of the paper, the results of measurements of 80 functional examinations are evaluated. Average values for the mobility of individual elements of the lumbar spine have been derived. Finally, the practical value of the new technique is demonstrated. Its special place for subluxations and spondylolyses is stressed.
