Lipophilic Malassezia yeasts (formerly Pityrosporum) are an important part of the human resident flora of the skin and the gut. Be - sides commensal and mutualistic interactions with the host they are also linked to esp. skin diseases although the specific causes are not yet comprehensively understood. These include Pityriasis versicolor, seborrheic eczema, Malassezia folliculitis and even systemic infections. Furthermore Malassezia yeasts can trigger atopic eczema and may even play a role in carcinogenesis. The aim of this article is to review and discuss recent data on ecology, physiology, pathogenicity as well as detection of these yeasts in humans and animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
