Friction element welding is gaining importance at Arnold Umformtechnik, as the use of lightweight metals and high-performance steel grades presents new challenges for joining technology. The process allows for the connection of aluminum and high-strength steel with a tensile strength of over 1000 MPa. It is based on a heat process, in which a friction welding element is used to join an aluminum sheet and a high-strength steel sheet together. Friction element welding is suitable for the production of vehicle assemblies such as the passenger cell and offers advantages such as high joint strength, no preparatory process steps, and the ability to process narrow flange widths. The process is already being used in series production at BMW, and laboratory experiments are underway with other automotive manufacturers. [Extracted from the article]

The article reports on a joint research project that has developed a new production concept for light metal foundries with which they can cut production-related energy costs by up to 60 percent and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80 percent. Energy-efficient and sustainable manufacturing processes are of fundamental importance for the future competitiveness of small and medium-sized production companies, especially in Germany.
