Anaphylaxis, an acute severe systemic and mostly allergic reaction, is a potentially life-threatening emergency that every physician can be confronted with in daily practice.The topic becomes more and more important due to its rising prevalence. In the following article we describe triggers, clinical presentation, diagnostic tools, risk- and augmenting factors as well as medical treatment in this age group and answer the question which patients you should treat with an epinephrine autoinjector. Data to quality of life impairment shows the importance of taking care of the patients and their families after the acute event. Further diagnostics to identify the elicitor, but especially educational interventions and individualized management plans facilitate the situation for them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Verum focus has long been analysed as part of information structure, being accounted for within a theory of focus as generation of alternatives on a polarity value. Recently, however, this view has been challenged, with some authors arguing for a separation between verum and focus. The empirical debate focuses on two types of strategies: either verum is marked identically to focus (e.g., pitch accent in German, English) or through a dedicated strategy (e.g., dedicated markers in Gitksan, Bura, South Marghi). On the basis of the second type, it has been argued that the link between focus and verum is only superficial, with verum instead arising from a lexical operator VERUM. In this paper, we provide evidence in support of the traditional link between truth marking and focus, using original field data on the morphosyntactic expression of information structure in 11 Bantu (Niger-Congo) languages. By working from function to form, we show that these languages use a variety of grammatical strategies for truth expression, strategies that are used elsewhere in the information structural system for backgrounding. In this way, verum is not directly marked by focal accent but marked indirectly via backgrounding, which we formulate as the Backgrounding and Underspecification Thesis (BUT). On the basis of this Bantu evidence, we add a third type of strategy to the typology, where verum is marked indirectly via backgrounding. We use this updated typology to argue in favour of maintaining a conceptual link between verum, polarity focus, and predicated-centred focus more broadly.

Flow chemistry was initially used for speed to early phase material delivery in the development laboratories, scaling up chemical transformations that we would not or could not scale up batch for safety reasons. Some early examples included a Newman Kwart Rearrangement, Claisen rearrangement, hydroformylation, and thermal imidazole cyclization. Next, flow chemistry was used to enable safe scale up of hazardous chemistries to manufacturing plants. Examples included high pressure hydrogenation, aerobic oxidation, and Grignard formation reactions. More recently, flow chemistry was used in Small Volume Continuous (SVC) processes, where highly potent oncolytic molecules were produced by fully continuous processes at about 10 kg/day including reaction, extraction, distillation, and crystallization, using disposable equipment contained in fume hoods.

Abstract QTL detection experiments in livestock species commonly use the half-sib design. Each male is mated to a number of females, each female producing a limited number of progeny. Analysis consists of attempting to detect associations between phenotype and genotype measured on the progeny. When family sizes are limiting experimenters may wish to incorporate as much information as possible into a single analysis. However, combining information across sires is problematic because of incomplete linkage disequilibrium between the markers and the QTL in the population. This study describes formulæ for obtaining MLEs via the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm for use in a multiple-trait, multiple-family analysis. A model specifying a QTL with only two alleles, and a common within sire error variance is assumed. Compared to single-family analyses, power can be improved up to fourfold with multi-family analyses. The accuracy and precision of QTL location estimates are also substantially improved. With small family sizes, the multi-family, multi-trait analyses reduce substantially, but not totally remove, biases in QTL effect estimates. In situations where multiple QTL alleles are segregating the multi-family analysis will average out the effects of the different QTL alleles.

Citizenship has been included for the first time ever as an explicit part of the school curriculum in England from September 2002. This paper explores how this historic shift has come about through the work of the Advisory Group on Education for Citizenship and the Teaching of Democracy in Schools (commonly known as the Crick Group). The first section sets out the background to why the Crick Group was established and shows how the main lessons from past policy approaches were absorbed by the Group. The second section explains how citizenship education is defined in the school curriculum in England. The third section details some of the current activities designed to encourage the development of effective practice in citizenship. In the final section a number of challenges facing citizenship education are identified. How these challenges are tackled will have a major impact as to the effectiveness of citizenship education practice in schools and elsewhere in England.
