Baroreceptor activation therapy (BAT) has been available for several years for treatment of therapy-refractory hypertension (trHTN). This procedure is currently being carried out in a limited number of centers in Germany, also with the aim of offering a high level of expertise through sufficient experience; however, a growing number of patients who are treated with BAT experience problems that treating physicians are confronted with in routine medical practice. In order to address these problems, a consensus conference was held with experts in the field of trHTN in November 2016, which summarizes the current evidence and experience as well as the problem areas in handling BAT patients.

The main problem in measurements of the focal VEP (Visual Evoked Potential) is its weak SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio). The most common method for enhancement of the SNR is the stimulus synchronized averaging. For study of single responses other ways in SNR improvement are needed. In this contribution a new method based on space-time selective measurement is introduced, which can be interpreted as beaming a signal source. Since the anatomical structures of sources generating the focal VEP are known in general and if the electrode positions are of sufficient density over the visual cortex, a source beamer can be realized by controlling the channels' delays.

A 42-year-old man was found unconscious, having swallowed 800 ml of an unknown liquid with suicidal intent. On admission, when his breath smelled strongly of acetone, he was intubated and ventilated, and several gastric lavages were performed.The serum acetone concentration was 2000 mg/l, that in urine 2300 mg/l. The residue of the liquid in the bottle from which he had drunk was pure acetone.Acetone poisoning having been established he was carefully hyperventilated, haemofiltration was performed over 16 hours and forced diuresis with high fluid intake was undertaken. His condition quickly improved and he was extubated after 14 hours. There was no subsequent evidence of organ damage. Repeated measurements of acetone in blood and urine indicated its elimination with a half-life of 11 hours. Literature search revealed that this was the second highest concentration of acetone in blood and urine followed by survival.This case demonstrates that, after acute acetone poisoning with an amount ten times the lethal dose, intensive care and rapid elimination of acetone can achieve sequelae-free survival.

Medical and social aspects relating to human reproduction has been the heading of a research subject in the context of sociogynaecology. An account is given in this paper of medicosociological studies and survey approaches with regard to induced-termination patients, puerperae and a control population, with emphasis being laid on identifying attitudes, motivations, and general views on having children. -- Methodical aspects are reported and assessed together with preliminary results obtained from a GDR-representative sub-study into 2,776 induced-termination patients. Priorities issues included the social situation of the interviewees, their attitudes towards having a child and to induced termination of pregnancy, reasons given for termination decisions, as well as views on contraception and family planning.2776 women who underwent induced abortion were interviewed; the results were compared to those from 100 women shortly after childbirth and a control group of 352 women. The average age of the abortion patients was 20.3, slightly higher than among the control group. 70% of the abortion patients were married, compared to 53% in the control group. A markedly low percentage of the abortion patients were still pursuing their educations. 50% of the abortion patients had children; those with no children had a relatively low average age and were more often pursuing their educations. A higher percentage of abortion patients preferred a 2 child to a 3 child family, while this trend was reversed in the 2 other groups. 84% of the abortion patients were employed, and for 84% it was the first abortion. Most wanted no more children at all, often because they felt they were too old or too young for a child or because of family reasons. 39% of the abortion patients had previously used oral contraceptives.

The "Prep-Trainer" was developed as teaching and checking aid in order to enable students and dentists interested in continued education to check themselves. The heat development in the pulp cavity is measured at the model. Measurements made by the author showed that the safest method for maintaining constant temperatures and thus avoiding over-heating of the pulp cavity is the cooling with the air-water spray handpiece by the dental assistant.

In 11 departments of gynaecology 2,700 patients with legal abortions had been as well in 1976 as in 1981 and 1,800 ones in 1987. The following results could be found: The average age decreased from 28.3 to 27.3 years and the portion of patients below 18 years increased from 6% to 8%. The portion of pupils, apprentices and students increased from 10% to 14%. 80% respectively 77% the women had born children previously. 33% respectively 38% of these women later on ant to have children yet. The portion of repeated artificial abortions increased from 16% to 35%. Motivations of artificial abortions changed only a little bit. The following motives were the main ones: Realized wish to children, age of the woman, inconvenient intervals of the born children and general familiar aspects. The hitherto existing use of hormonal contraception increased from 39% to 97%. Aspects of possible health damages and aspects of indifference were the main explanations of the non-use of hormonal contraception. 96% of the women intend to use one form of contraception (67% hormonal contraception, 15% IUD and 14% classic methods) in future. Report about behaviour in sexuality of 201 patients after treatment of carcinoma cervicis at the Department of Gynecology of Karl-Marx-University Leipzig in 1965 to 1966. The data of interest were sexual behavior 2 years before treatment and that 5 years after. The informations were got by direct interrogation and with the help of a standardized form.

Recommendation of a telemetric system for the direct fetal monitoring using the monitor BMT 914-1 (Zwönitz). The free movement of parturients during labor is more comfortable and involves an increasing uterine activity, a labor progress and a decrease of oxytocic infusion rate.

Abortion-related trends in East Germany are discussed. The abortion -birth ratio has declined from 1:3.2 for the period 1960-1971 to 1:0.7 for the 2nd half of 1972, at the Gynecological Clinic, Karl-Marx-University. Complications were observed in 20.5% of abortion patients between 1960-1971, but in only 15.9% in the 1st half of 1972, and no deaths were observed in the latter period. Prematurity as a late complication of abortion is more difficult to identify. The percentage of premature births at the University Gynecological Clinic, Szeged, has risen from 7.8 (1955) to 10.2 (1971), but this may be due to other factors. These trends are also reflected in worldwide figures.

Based on compared GDR-representative studies in 11 hospitals for gynaecology in the years 1976, 1981 and 1987 altogether 7.200 induced-terminations patients were asked about motivations and social factors of artificial abortion and used contraception. Results of interviews from 1.146 induced-termination patients younger then 20 years are given. Proceed from results propositions are leading away reduction the numbers of artificial abortions from young women.As part of a general research program on pregnancy and the development of women, 11 women's clinics cooperated with the sociology department at Karl Marx University in Leipzig to make a series of surveys in 1976, 1981 and 1987 which would be representative of the population of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The results of the survey have an probable error of 5%. The survey reported motivation and attitude changes among abortion patients younger than 20 years. In the interval from 1976-1981 the percentage of young abortion patients increased from 15 to 19% and then decreased to 17% in 1987. The number of those below 18 years was 6% in 1976, rising to 9% in 1981 and 1987. During the same period the percentage of married patients decreased from 10% to 3% and 4%. At present about 30% of all children in the GDR are born of unmarried mothers. [All % are listed by years 1976, 1981, 1987] By occupation, students and apprentices made up 54%, 58%, 59%; skilled workers 29%, 24%, 23%; university students 6%, 13%, 14%; and unskilled workers 11%, 5%, and 4%. The most important reasons for not using hormonal contraceptives were indifference 20%, 25%, and 31%; anxiety about health risks 14%, 13% and 12%; weight gain 9%, 8%, 6%; discouraged by partner 3%, 1%, 2%; and anxiety about failure of the method 1%, 1% and 2%. That the statistics on abortion have changed so little over the years, taking into account the effort expended on socio-political measures, shows that those measures alone will not produce any decrease in the number of abortions.

In attempting local retinal stimulation of an intact eye the generation of scattered light cannot be prevented, but it can be sufficiently reduced by a suitable selection of stimulus parameters, especially of stimulus luminance and facial field luminance, of stimulus size and exposition time. By investigating the most important sources of scattered light, e.g. inhomogenities in the dioptric media, reflections at refracting surfaces, diffraction at the pupil borders, and the distribution of scattered light in the retina it becomes possible to develop indications for the construction of a focal optical stimulator.

The two test series were carried out with the dilatometer TMA 500 (of Haereus company). The measurements for thermic expansion are easily reproducible, not so for setting expansion. The recorded setting expansion values are identical with the manufacturers' data given for Luster Cast, Aurovest, and Deguvest HFG, among the thermic expansion values only those for Luster Cast are in line with the data given; the values given for Bayer DC are most different from those we found.

During a 12-year period (1960-1972) abortions represented 27.5% of stationary gynecological complications in a Leipzig women's clinic. According to demographic analyses, the law of March 9, 1972, legalizing abortion, has brought about a reduction in this rate to 9.9% and the relationship of abortions to births was reduced from 26.9% to 12.6%. The significant decrease in the number of fever complications and septic abortions (from .05 to .001%) has been particularly encouraging, and abortion mortality has reached a low of .724%. Average recuperation stay in the clinic was shortened to 4.7 days for uncomplicated abortions and 6.2 for those with complications. The average age for abortion patients has remained constantly around 27 years with average number of previous births between 1.1-1.2. Recently there has been an increase in the number of single and divorced women undergoing abortion.

Statistics on legal abortions at the Women's Clinic, Karl Marx University, Leipzig, East Germany, are reported. Between 1960-June 30, 1972, there were 3955 abortions and 53,972 births. Of these, 1368 abortions and 1831 births occurred in 1972; a similar large increase in abortions has been reported from other socialist countries. Average age of patients was 30.6 years in 1960, 27.7 years in 1972. In 1960, 83.1% of patients were married, but only 66.4% in 1972. Average hospital stay was 10.3 days in 1960, 3.7 days in 1972. Complications were seen in 32.5% of cases in 1960, and in 8.3% in 1972. Statistics for each year, 1960-1972, are given, and the implications of this information for medical practice and social policy are discussed.
