Objective: Kinetic data of stride characteristics and ground reaction forces of cattle become increasingly important as automated lameness detection may be installed in dairy cow housing systems in the future. Therefore, sound heifers and cows were measured on an instrumented treadmill to collect such basic data., Material Und Methods: Nine heifers and 10 cows were trained to walk on an instrumented treadmill. Vertical ground reaction forces as well as step and stride timing and length variables were measured for all limbs simultaneously. On average, 16 stride cycles in cows and 24 strides in heifers were analysed in each case., Results: The cows walked on the treadmill at an average speed of 1.2 ± 0.05 m/s (mean ± standard deviation), with a stride rate of 43.0 ± 1.9/min and a stride length of 1.68 ± 0.1 m. The heifers had average values of 1.3 ± 0.04 m/s, 53.7 ± 2.2/min and 1.49 ± 0.05 m, respectively. The stance duration relative to stride duration (the duty factor) was for the cows significantly longer in the forelimbs (67%) than in the hind limbs (64%). Force-time-curves of all limbs showed two peaks, one after landing (FP1) and another during push off (FP2). Vertical ground reaction force was highest for FP1 in the hind limbs, but for FP2 in the forelimbs. At all limbs, force minimum between the peaks occurred shortly before midstance. The vertical impulse carried by both forelimbs amounted to 53.7% of the total stride impulse in cows and to 55.0% in heifers. The location of the centre of body mass varied during the stride cycle but was always located more towards the front limbs., Conclusions: Cows and heifers showed a symmetrical walk with minimal intra-individual variations. Relative stride impulse of the front limbs was higher than that of the hind limbs. Peak vertical force in the hind limbs was highest at landing and in the forelimbs at push off. The present study offers kinetic data of sound cows and heifers which might be helpful as guidelines for automated systems for lameness detection in cattle.

On 80 bovine hindclaws from slaughtered cows a correct functional claw trimming (sole horn thickness 5 mm; group 1) and on further 80 hindclaws a standardised, incorrect claw trimming (sole horn thickness 2 mm; group 2) was performed using 4 different disks (one cutting, three grinding disks). Two thermocouples were inserted into the solar corium and the heat production on the corium was measured during claw trimming. During correct functional claw trimming with each of the 4 disks a temperature increase in the corium with a median of < or = 0.3 degrees C was calculated. During incorrect claw trimming (2 mm sole horn thickness) a temperature increase with a median of < or = 0.3 degrees C for the first three disks was determined. During claw trimming using the abrasive semiflexible plastic disk a median of 1.3 degrees C temperature increase was calculated. Comparison of the temperatures measured in the claws from group 1 and 2 showed a statistically significant difference between all four disks. Comparison of the temperature increase within each group (group 1 and 2) revealed a statistically significant difference between the cutting disk with steel blades and the abrasive, semiflexible plastic disk in both groups. The highest temperatures measured were 41.5 degrees C in group 1 using the disk with 70% amount of fitted hard metal granulate, and 42.2 degrees C in group 2 (temperature increase of 10.6 degrees C) using the abrasive semiflexible plastic disk. Under the experimental conditions of this study, only a very slight thermogenesis was found when a functional and correct claw trimming using the 4 tested disks was performed. This slight thermogenesis should not be able to cause thermic injury of the corium. By trimming the sole horn incorrectly (2 mm) the measured heat generation in the corium was minor, without danger of thermic insult, excepted for using the disk with a 70% amount of fitted hard metal granulate and the abrasive semiflexible plastic disk. Even, it is unlikely that a short term temperature increase of 10.6 degrees C can cause thermic insults of the solar corium.

Principles of construction in the forepaw and hindpaw of the domestic cat (Felis catus). 4. Innervation of muscles and analysis of locomotion.The innervation relations of the fore- and hindlimb of the cat were newly investigated to complete the interpretation of the muscle innervation (Figs 1-4). By means of special motion studies the contribution of paw muscles was determined during balance, locomotion as well as under specific manipulation of the prevailing single phases of the motion cycle. The functional considerations are graphically prepared in Figs 5-11.

Muscle tissue was obtained from eight forearm muscles of six male sheep (180 days old) and stained for NADH tetrazolium oxidoreductase and myofibrillar ATPase after preincubation at pH 4.3. The fiber diameter and the percentage were determined of three fiber types: slow twitch oxidative (STO), fast twitch oxidative (FTO) and fast twitch glycolytic fibers (FTG). The extensor carpi radialis muscle had the lowest percentage of STO fibers. It is a fast extensor of the carpal joint. The superficial digital flexor muscle (FS) is located in the superficial region of the forearm has shown the highest percentage of STO fibers (50%). These fibers were also considerable larger (57 microns) than the STO fibers of the deep digital flexor muscle (39 microns). The FS supports the elbow joint extensors in the fixation of the elbow joint during the standing position (static work) and flexes the digital joints in motion (dynamic work). At first muscle function decides the quality and the quantity of the muscle fibers. Then other factors, e.g. capillarization, determine the distribution of fiber types. Muscles which have to work static-tonically require a higher content of large slow twitch fibers regardless of whether these muscles are located close to the limb axis or in the periphery. They resist lastingly gravity. Thus they are antigravity muscles. In the forearm they are the superficial digital flexor muscle, flexor carpi ulnaris muscle, and extensor carpi ulnaris muscle, which always have more than 30% STO-fibers.

Muscle tissue was removed from the extensors and flexors of the elbow joint of six male sheep (180 days old) and stained for NADH tetrazolium oxidoreductase and myofibrillar ATPase after preincubation at pH 4.3 in order to identify three fiber types: slow twitch oxidative (STO), fast twitch oxidative (FTO) and fast twitch glycolytic fibers (FTG). The medial head of the M. triceps brachii and the anconaeus muscle had the largest fibers (> 50 and 60 microns). The smallest muscle fibers (35-43 microns) were found in the dorsal part of the long head of the triceps muscle. The medial head of the triceps muscle and the anconaeus muscle possessed a very high percentage of STO-fibers (90 and 100%) and FTG-fibers were absent in these muscles. In the other extensors and flexors of the elbow joint the STO-percentage amounted to less than 30%. The dorsal part of the long head of the triceps muscle contained only 13% STO-fibers, but had the highest percentage of FTG-fibers (49%), which is representative of fast-muscles. The muscles of the elbow joint perform both static and dynamic functions. The medial head of the triceps brachii muscle and the anconaeus muscle possess the complement of enzymes which permits them to fulfil the work of extensors in the standing position. Therefore, they are typical of antigravity muscles. The histochemical structure of the other extensors and flexors reflect their function in motion. The lateral and long head of triceps muscle oppose the flexors and extend the elbow joint of the raised limb in the swing phase, during the landing phase they also function to support the other extensors of the elbow.

The shoulder joint is a free joint which enables the free forelimb to describe curves in space, in order to perform movements and for locomotion. The movements can be measured in three planes: flexion-extension, abduction-adduction and rotation. The extent of movement in the cat, the German Shepherd and the Dachshund are described and the efficacy for these species and breeds is discussed.

The elbow joint of the cat is more than a simple cylindrical joint and cannot be compared to that of the dog. The structure of the bone ends, arrangement of ligaments and the shapes of the joint surfaces, which are described individually, emphasize that the elbow joint, together with the proximal radioulnar joint, have an important role to play in feline-specific limb functions.

Whereas Kolwe described and measured pronation and supination in the cat as early as 1920, the present study deals with rotation of the lower limb of the cat and dog from both comparative and functional aspects. Active supination predominates in cats during climbing and the capture of prey; in the canine passive supination and rotation of the lower limb are used in conjunction with directional changes involved in the chase. The difference in the extent of inward rotation between long- and short-legged breeds of dogs underscores this hypothesis.

The H reflex in the triceps surae muscle was elicited by just supraliminal stimulation of the tibial nerve. It was conditioned by paired impulses to the brachial plexus or the forelimb nerves and in some cases to other sites of the body. With a conditioning test interval of 32-47 msec a facilitation occurred which reached its maximum at about 80 msec and lasted for about 400 msec. The facilitation evoked by ipsilateral conditioning had a shorter latency than that from contralateral (ipsilateral: 32-42 msec, contralateral; 37-47 msec). The facilitation at the optimum interval (about 80 msec) ranged between 1;5 and 11.3 times of the control values. Ipsilateral conditioning was slightly more effective than the contralateral one (Fig. 1, 2). Stimulation of different forelimb nerves at an interval of 80 msec showed only insignificant differences in the amount of facilitation but was more effective than skin stimulation in the most cases (Fig. 3). Varying the intensity of the conditioning stimulus showed that facilitation occurred with just perceptable stimuli but it became more pronounced as soon as pain threshold (2-3 time of perception threshold) was exceeded (Fig. 3). This suggests that facilitation was mainly due to activation of nociceptor afferents. From the onset of facilitation and the conduction velocities of the respective forelimb and hindlimb afferents (cf. 6) a central reflex lantency of about 43 msec was calculated. To get further insight into the central connections of the reflex loop the H reflex was conditioned by paravertebral stimulation at C5 and L1 level. Both stimuli caused a distinct facilitation. However, the latency of the onset was 10-15 msec shorter with lumbar stimulation than with cervical stimulation. This and the similar time course of facilitation seen in animal experiments (12) suggest that an early part of facilitation is mediated via a descending propriospinal pathway. The major part, however, is supposed to be mediated via supraspinal pathways and seems to be related to a startle response.

The elbow joints of 115 adult live rabbits have been subjected to experimental distraction by various forces and for different intervals. The forces applied were one tenth and one half, respectively, of the mean body weights; thus, a calculated reduction of one eleventh and five elevenths, respectively, of the force transmitted through the articulating joint surfaces was achieved. The distraction was performed for periods of 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks. The forces were administered by means of an extraarticular device which allowed motion of the joints. Controls had been provided for to prove the noneffectiveness of the distraction device per se to the joint structures under study. Both upper limbs--one side always served as control--were subjected to radiological, histological/histochemical, angiographic and cytological examination; cartilage in addition was treated by vital staining or, alternatively, by producing splitting lines. The results were as follows: (1) Extensive local and more generalized hyperemia involving the whole limb in question was produced regardless of strength and duration of distraction. (2) Under all experimental conditions subsynovial hemorrhage and hemarthrosis developed. (3) Subsynovial hemorrhage caused the development of granulomatous and, subsequently, fibrous synovitis with simultaneously demonstrable hemosiderin depots. (4) Hemarthrosis was persistent during the entire period of observation. (5) Articular cartilage revealed moderate signs of degeneration and also irregularities of the usual pattern of splitting lines after continuous distraction for 8 weeks. At the same time, subchondral bone atrophy appeared. Vital staining revealed increased cartilage staining under mild distraction; moderate and marked distraction caused definitively less staining. Subsynovial hemorrhage and hemarthrosis are explained as partial vacuum effects. Concerning the moderate cartilage changes, a multifactorial genesis is presumed; the possible role of chemical, nutritional and mechanical factors is discussed. The widespread hyperemia most likely is caused by mechanical stimulation going along with joint distraction; capsular hyperemia might be a phenomenon immediately related to synovitis. Finally, the experimental results are discussed relative to observations made during clinical traction therapy.
