- Abstract
The study discusses and presents the archaeological phenomena of burial practices observed in the graves of the Early Avar Age cemetery of Szegvár-Oromdűlő. Besides orientation, these are the three types of differently formed graves, the stumped variant of fractional animal burials, the spatial separation of the deceased and the accompanying animal remains, and the custom of interring pottery and bone-in meat (lamb rump bone) into graves. It analyses these important but so far not thoroughly exploited groups of sources in regard of the 6
th -7th century burials of a larger geographical unit, the Trans-Tisa (Tiszántúl) region, since the population of this region can be better characterized by their funerary practices than their tangible cultural heritage. In addition, it refers to the presence or absence of these characteristics in the burials of a smaller area within the investigated region - the territory bordered by the Körös, Tisza and Maros Rivers - dating to the second half of the Avar Age, and through this, to their continuity. It delineates the grave goods of female and male burials which represent the inheritance of the first generation among the graves of the Trans-Tisa region. Their common feature is their different provenance. Thus there are grave goods with Eastern European, steppe connections, grave goods of Byzantine taste or origin, as well as grave goods of local, Gepidic provenance among them. Communities of the Trans-Tisa region in the 6th -7th century Carpathian Basin are characterized by a chain of significant archaeological phenomena of burial customs exclusively attributed to them, which were commonly spread within a certain area and continuously practiced for generations. Based on these features, the population that settled here can be well outlined in respect of origin, traditions and cultural affiliation. In the author's opinion it can be presumed by the sparse reports of Byzantine sources that this region was occupied and inhabited by a population referred to as Kutrigurs by contemporary sources and steppe people led by them. To determine histologically whether (a) changing the thread design between first- and second-generation palatal implants (Straumann, Basel, Switzerland) influences the bone-to-implant contact (BIC) rate of palatal implants subjected to conventional loading, and (b) whether histological evidence of peri-implantitis appears in this setting. Patients who had received an orthodontic palatal implant for skeletal anchorage between January 1998 and December 2007 were examined. First-generation palatal implants (Straumann, Basel, Switzerland) 3.3 mm in diameter and 6 mm or 4 mm long were used, as were second-generation implants 4.1 mm in diameter and 4.2 mm long. After completion of active orthodontic treatment, the implants were removed and prepared for histological investigation. This study was designed as a comparative analysis of a series of two cases: 28 explanted first-generation (n = 14) and second-generation (n = 14) palatal implants were analyzed. Bone healing was achieved with all implants. Both types of implants revealed a mean bone-to-implant contact (BIC) rate that was nearly equal: 80.7% (SD 10.7%) for the first-generation and 81% (SD 13.1%) for the second-generation implants. Bone resorption was only observed in 5 palatal implants (3/14 of the first, and 2/14 of the second generation). Despite differing thread designs, second-generation palatal implants revealed similar bone-to-implant contact rates as did those of the first generation. Few patients presented bone resorption in the peri-implant bone.

This article discusses constructions of identity, home, and belonging among first and second-generation Haitian-migrants living in South Florida. Conflicting polarities mark the lived experiences of the Haitian interviewees, and as such, migration theories of integration as the "melting pot" or "salad bowl," are rendered useless for understanding immigrant experiences. To another degree, the notion of social hybridity is elaborated upon for its resonance to ontological concepts among Haitian-Americans, especially in regard to the push and pull of living in the United States with remaining sentiments toward Haiti. For many of our Haitian informants the notion of class stratification defined their perceptions of selfhood. So too, our Haitian-American interviewees described their differences from other Afro-descendant experiences as African-Americans, further situating their Haitian-ness as being unique. What is clear from analyzing narratives of these Haitian-Americans is the mutability of their imagining belonging-ness and the polyvalent meanings associated with their ambivalent identities. This article explores significant notions of home and belonging among first- and second-generation Cuban immigrants in South Florida. The analyses are derived from biographical narrative interviews with six Cuban Americans. Three key subjects were in the biographical life stories—the notion of escape or leaving, the sense of home, and constructions of Cuban identity. In assessing these themes, we found there to be profound differences between the generations. Moreover, these Cuban biographies demonstrate how differing stories of migration provide new theoretical perspectives on immigration, transnationalism, and ethnicity. The experiences presented and discussed here connect to the ambivalence and complexity of belongingness and interpretations of Cuban-ness. In the present bio - bibliographic collection the life and work of female scientists, working in Austria or being originally from Austria, have been the center of research. The temporal focus extends primarily from the turn of the century to the post-war period. The first generation of female scientists at the Universities of Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck were explored. The first generation of women who achieved a habilitation in Austria, as well as the first female lecturers and professors were collected in their completeness. Those "classical" science careers can be compared with those of men. However, a detailed consideration was also given to the non- academic area. From a total of 331 lexicon articles about one-third is dedicated to the medical, psychological and therapeutic field. Due to the historical turning points of the two world wars persecution, flight, emigration and also re-migration of the female scientists move into the focus of numerous of the individual biographies. The question of similarities and differences, according to different living conditions and opportunities to those who remained in Austria, is obvious. Beyond the individual biographical aspect, a historic impression about cultural and political trends and their impact on scientific research and teaching is provided. Especially from a feminist perspective, the lexicon is a desideratum, as it is the first time that in Austria the participation of women in the production and placement of science during the considered period got comprehensively researched and documented., In der vorliegenden bio-bibliografischen Sammlung wurden Leben und Werk von Wissenschafterinnen in und aus Österreich erforscht.
