The discovery by Cardinal Angelo Mai in 1819 of extensive portions of Cicero’s De Republica aroused great interest in the United States. Within a decade Americans had published an edition of the Latin text and the first English translation of the new work as well as numerous articles about its contempo­rary relevance. This paper analyzes how conservative intellectuals found in De Republica support for their critique of democratic trends in American poli­tics connected with the popularity of Andrew Jackson, whom they viewed as a potential military dictator like Julius Caesar. Also highlighted in the article is the tension between this traditional approach to the reading of a Ciceronian text and the historicizing tendencies of the new German philological scholar­ship that was beginning to make itself felt in the United States in the 1820s.

From his pre-1989 essays to his post-1989 presidential speeches, V. Havel develops an account of ideology that avoids a standard dictionary definition (ideology as a system of political or economic beliefs) and relies almost exclusively on elaboration via metaphor, narrative, and performance. The import of Havel’s treatment of ideology has not been appreciated. Metaphors, stories, and performances are special forms of appeal that prompt us to rethink the meaning of a given domain. This paper explores how Havel exploits the creative potential of these forms of appeal in order to radically reconceptualize our understanding of ideology as a force in the modern world.

Huge amounts of data are routinely logged and stored during the monitoring of biotechnological production processes. A concept is described to extract and analyse the information these data contain and to subsequently apply it for process improvement. In total, roughly 100,000 time series of raw and derived signals which stemmed from 173 high-cell-density processes with recombinant microorganisms at 50 m3 scale (working volume) were processed. As is often the case, no mathematical process models were readily available and therefore data-driven, computer-intensive methods were applied. These endeavours helped to stimulate a change in manufacturing strategy, which in turn has led to an increase in the final product titre of 26% on average.

Complementarity between quantitative and qualitative methods often implies that qualitative methods are a step toward quantitative precision or that quantitative and qualitative methods provide mutually validating "triangulation." However, there also is unacknowledged quantification within the type of analytic induction that is considered pivotal in qualitative thinking. We attempt to justify this claim and present a form of phenomenological analysis that invokes numeric algorithms. Numerically aided phenomenology is a procedure for systematically describing categories (kinds, or types) of lived experience within a set of experiential narratives. In a comparative reading, recurrent meaning expressions are identified and paraphrased. Then judgments about their presence or absence are used to create matrices representing the profiles of meanings expressed in each narrative. Finally, cluster analytic algorithms are used to group these experiential narratives according to the similarities in their profiles of meaning expressions. In this way, categories of similar experiential narratives—and their distinctive attributes—can be identified. Rather than an essentialist conception of the qualities defining classes, in numerically aided phenomenology classes are defined by more-or-less invariant attributes, i.e., classes are formed such that members share a large number of expressed meanings, although no single meaning (or set thereof) is necessary or sufficient for class membership. Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is important for shaping healthcare to meet the increasing demands of the health care system. Interprofessional (IP) training approaches are increasingly being pursued in the education of healthcare professionals (HCPs). The Zurich interprofessional clinical training ward (ZIPAS®) is implementing this approach in HCP’s education. This study is part of the evaluation and explores fostering factors for perspective taking among students during ZIPAS®-internships.

In April 2023, the American Indian Culture and Research Journal (AICRJ) officially re-launched as a diamond open access journal with eScholarship Publishing, the University of California’s open access, library-based publishing service. This ‘flip’ from a subscription-based publication model unlocked nearly 50 years of research in Native American studies and ensures that future work will be openly available to everyone. “Of all the communities represented in scholarship, Indigenous communities often lack the financial and institutional resources to even see what has been published about their lives,” notes Editor in Chief, Dr. David Delgado Shorter. “Reaching a point where we could be fully accessible was long in the making in American Indian Studies at UCLA, our host institution.” In this presentation transcript from the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions’ (IFLA) Library Publishing Special Interest Group meeting at the 2023 World Library Congress Satellite, representatives from AICRJ and from the eScholarship Publishing program describe in greater detail the impetus for this transition to open access, the institutional and community-driven funding model that made it possible, and the efforts that went into migrating the journal, including its back issues, to a library publishing environment.

Automatic Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) systems for pipeline girth weld inspections are usually subjected to a qualification process. This process consists of assessment of performance capabilities including detection, sizing, temperature range and repeatability. One of the most demanding qualification programmes is described in DNV ST-F101 Appendix E [1]. With the introduction of the AUT module in the 2023 edition of CIVA simulation software, the incorporation of metamodeling allows users to predict detection reliability via probability of detection (POD) and sizing accuracy of the zonal discrimination method (ZDM) using amplitude apportioning. Part 1 of this project demonstrated the ability of CIVA to simulate the calibration block and strip chart output. In Part 2 we illustrate the techniques that can be used to predict POD and sizing accuracy as might be done in a system qualification. Results compare well to field data.
