Starting from the moon episode in Orlando Furioso, the essay put in aesthetic and cultural perspective the peculiar way in which Ariosto translates in written form the platonic contrast between Idea and copy. Ariosto is thus integrated into the platonic tradition of the Renaissance, taking into account his links with the cultural environment of Ferrara at the time.

Alla stregua di un viaggio che valica i confini di tempo e materia, colore e originalità, archeologia e storia dell’arte, la mostra Serial Classic, curata da S. Settis e A. Anguissola ed allestita dal 9 maggio al 24 agosto 2015 presso le sale del Podium della Fondazione Prada di Milano, ha affrontato con rinnovata e audace vitalità il concetto di ‘classico’ attraverso il rapporto tra originali, copie e riproduzioni delle grandi manifestazioni statuarie greche, svelando al mondo moderno quanto i valori di classicità in essi insiti siano vivi, energici e attuali.

The article examines the conceptual interrelation between copia and delectatio within the early modern newspaper and literary discourse. The historical semantics of these notions helps to understand how “Unterhaltung” becomes a central category for the book market in the 16th and 17th centuries. Most successful, here, are compilations and collections of short prose, which advertise their texts by emphasizing the very amount and the diverting variation of materials they gather.
