Kafka's text has often been read as a reportage, but it doesn't fit the genre neatly. Rather than reporting what happens during the airshow, it dwells on the appearance of things, which are described meticulously, bearing witness to the author's literary ambition. However, reading the text as a hybrid, composite work that has been produced by an ambitious beginner, does not do it justice either. This is due to the fact that the description of things, especially of the airfield, comes with a reflection on perception. The airfield appears to have been artificially arranged, to induce a perceptive condition giving rise to self-forgetfulness. The later Kafka will regard self-forgetfulness as a precondition for his literary writing. As I will argue in this article, self-forgetfulness as a concept can already be detected in Die Aeroplane in Brescia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
