As Modern Languages researchers and teachers we pride ourselves on our ability to read (and view) material beyond the Anglo-American canon, and we make use of this ability to argue that we offer fresh perspectives on theory and practice within the broad range of sub-disciplines that our subject area encompasses. As Modern Languages researchers, inclusive citation should, then, be our bread and butter. But to what extent are we really contributing to “decolonised” knowledge creation? How much attention, for example, are we paying to calls to #CiteBlackWomen? Taking as a case study my recent explorations of race and gender in Brazilian cinema, I offer some reflections on the impact that citing more inclusively has made on my understanding of Brazilian culture more broadly.

Colonial era codifications of customary law – especially those codified in indigenous first languages – have a resilient capacity to form and inform living customary law. In the context of Mukono District, Uganda, modern conceptions of customary law are informed and shaped by colonial era codifications promulgated by the British Protectorate and the Kingdom of Buganda. This research insight offers practical benefits to those seeking to promote access to justice and human rights development in Mukono District. Such benefits speak to the potential vitality and relevance of colonial era customary codifications. Misgivings about the alien influences and exploitative purposes that distorted and corrupted colonial era codes do not warrant disregard of their active legacy within modern customary legal frameworks. The use of receptive research approaches such as those developed and modelled by Sally Falk Moore can help ensure the ongoing influence of colonial era codes are not hidden by contemporary orthodoxies and biases.

Social, economic, and political pressures are causing a shift in the global energy mix, with a preference toward renewable energy sources. In order to realize widespread implementation of these resources, large-scale storage of renewable energy is needed. Among the proposed energy storage technologies, redox flow batteries offer many unique advantages. The primary limitation of these systems, however, is their limited energy density which necessitates very large installations. In order to enhance the energy storage capacity of these systems, we have developed a unique dual-circuit architecture which enables two levels of energy storage; first in the conventional electrolyte, and then through the formation of hydrogen. Moreover, we have begun a pilot-scale demonstration project to investigate the scalability and technical readiness of this approach. This combination of conventional energy storage and hydrogen production is well aligned with the current trajectory of modern energy and mobility infrastructure. The combination of these two means of energy storage enables the possibility of an energy economy dominated by renewable resources.

The design, development and initial operation of a new type of fluorine microreactor are described. Its use in agrochemical discovery chemistry is illustrated with simple examples of electrophilic fluorination.
