Актуальність статті зумовлена постійною динамікою лексикону як виявом сутнісної властивості мови й зокрема феноменом розвитку семантики назви світ, що у XXI ст. увійшла до складу найчастотніших повнозначних одиниць української мови. Мета дослідження — на прикладі лінгвокультурного простору Києва виявити особливості процесу семантизації лексеми світ з урахуванням різних вимірів семіозису та з’ясувати чинники, що вплинули на номінативну активність одиниці і визначили її лінгвопрагматичне спрямування. Предметом дослідження є номінативно-референційний і прагматичний потенціал назви світ, зафіксованої в масмедійних текстах та ергоніміконі столиці. Для досягнення мети обрано такі методи і прийоми: компонентний аналіз слова, дистрибутивний аналіз, аналіз словникових дефініцій, описовий метод, результати асоціативних експериментів, конструктивний метод, контекстуальний аналіз, контент-аналіз, прийоми кількісного аналізу. Новизну розвідки визначає комплексний багатоаспектний підхід до з’ясування процесу семантизації назви світ, здійснений на засадах семіотики і лінгвокультурології. У результаті дослідження семантики численних загальних і власних номінацій із компонентом світ було зроблено висновок, що на специфіку їх референції вплинула актуалізація ядерних сем ‘межа’, ‘сфера’, ‘сукупність’, ‘повнота обсягу’, а окрім того, потенційна оцінна сема. Закцентовано на загальній тенденції до номінування різних семіотичних сфер одиницями з просторовою семантикою. Одним з основних чинників номінативної активності назви визначено звукосимволічну, іконічну природу знака, що забезпечує його милозвучність та естетичну привабливість, особливо значущу для «комерційних» назв і рекламних текстів. Приділено увагу визначенню специфіки осмислення й інтерпретації знань та уявлень про світ і їх упорядкування в ментальному просторі. На підставі зіставлення концепту СВІТ як української лінгвокультурної домінанти з універсальним доменом ПРОСТІР виокремлено аксіологічно марковані когнітивні ознаки «всеосяжність», «безмежність», «матерія», «пізнання», що визначають лінгвопрагматичне спрямування номінацій. Перспективи подальших досліджень убачаємо у вивченні функційно-прагматичних властивостей назви світ у різних регістрах мовлення.

У статті окреслено місце й роль університетів, включених до Списку Всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО, як окремих об’єктів номінації, так і складових частин номінаційних досьє історичних центрів міст; визначено вплив зазначених освітніх інституцій як своєрідних репрезентантів своїх країн, на розвиток культури, освіти й науки. За допомогою загальнонаукових методів аналізу, синтезу та узагальнення розкрито суть і значення університетів як об’єктів Всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО на основі їх симбіозу між пам’яткою ЮНЕСКО і студентською Alma-mater як для кожної з країн, так і міжнародного співтовариства. На лютий 2023 року Список Всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО (після включення у січні на засіданні спеціальної сесії КВС ЮНЕСКО трьох об’єктів до Списку ЮНЕСКО під загрозою) нараховував 1157 об’єктів культурної, природної та змішаної спадщини. Серед унікальних об’єктів, які у різні роки були визнанні надбанням людства, чільне місце посідають сім одноосібних університетських архітектурних комплексів університетів, що включені до Списку ЮНЕСКО. Особливість зазначених об’єктів полягає у тому, що вони покликані виконувати подвійну функцію: з одного боку, – це освітні і наукові інституції, а, з іншого, – об’єкти Всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО. Дослідження базується на принципах об’єктивності та історизму, що передбачає розгляд окремих процесів у контексті їх розвитку і зв’язку з відповідними вітчизняними та міжнародними інституціями. Особиста участь авторів статті у підготовці номінаційного досьє щодо включення у 2011 році Резиденції митрополитів Буковини і Далмації (Чернівецький національний університет імені Юрія Федьковича) до Списку Всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО та подальші кроки в її охороні та збереженні дали можливість проаналізувати та зробити висновок щодо переваги зазначених номінацій у процесі розвитку освіти, науки і культури.

Стаття присвячена розглядові лексичних одиниць, що позначають різноманітні комунікативні дії. Матеріалом аналізу слугували тлумачні і двомовні словники англійської, української і російської мов. Предметом дослідження виступають семантичні процеси, які відбувались у аналізованих номінаціях з плином часу і при їх запозиченні із інших мов. В історичному ракурсі виявилось, що певні лексичні одиниці від початку не були назвами комунікативних дій як таких, а розвинули їх на основі семантичної деривації (symposium), у багатьох одиницях відбулися семантичні зсуви в бік уточнення характеру комунікативних дій: додались оцінні семи, як позитивні, так і негативні (panegyryc, epithet), уточнення стосовно усного/письмового модусу комунікативної дії (manifesto). Словникові джерела свідчать, що значна частка номінацій комунікативних дій мають характер інтернаціоналізмів, які при схожості форми мають і певні смислові нюанси, що відрізняють їх у різних мовах (наявність/відсутність оцінного компоненту, дискурсивні особливості функціонування). Не всі споріднені за своєю формою слова в різних мовах є назвами комунікативних дій, що коріниться в діахронічному шляху їх розвитку (negotiate = вести переговори VS негоціант = торговець). Продуктивність слова-джерела, яке запозичується різними мовами, може варіювати значною мірою: латинське loqui = говорити в англійській мові породило 7 споріднених слів, а в українській 2. Переважна більшість розглядуваних англомовних номінацій мають споріднені слова в українській і російській мовах. Але є і виключно англійські назви комунікативних дій, які не мають навіть однослівного українського/російського еквіваленту, а тільки фразовий (bromide = говорити банальності). Словникові дописи, що містять історичні довідки, слугують цікавим і цінним матеріалом для вивчення номінативних процесів на позначення різноманітних комунікативних дій. Отримані спостереження прислужаться у практиці викладання англійської мови і теорії комунікації студентам філологічного фаху.

Стаття присвячена дослідженню внутрішньої форми номінацій ювелірних прикрас на матеріалі англомовних спеціалізованих енциклопедичних словників. У роботі проаналізовано ознаки, на яких ґрунтується внутрішня форма англомовних номінацій ювелірних прикрас, зокрема, мотиватор призначення. Під мотивацією розуміємо формальний і семантичний зв'язок між словами як знаками і їхніми позначуваними. Матеріалом ономасіологічного дослідження англомовних номінацій ювелірних прикрас слугували наступні енциклопедичні словники ювелірної справи: An Illustrated Dictionary of Jewelry та Glossary of Jewelry-Related Terms. За матеріалом зазначених джерел загалом було зафіксовано 300 номінативних одиниць, які позначають ювелірні прикраси. Одна з найчисельніших груп досліджуваних номінацій вмотивована призначенням відповідних ювелірних прикрас та складає 24 % від загальної кількості вибірки. Сюди належать номінації, вмотивовані суто функціональним призначенням ювелірної прикраси як елементу одягу та зовнішнього вигляду людини. Аналіз мотивації досліджуваних складених номінацій показав, що мотиватор призначення відображає також використання тієї чи іншої прикраси у відповідних випадках чи ситуаціях. Поряд із ситуативним типом вмотивованості виділяємо соціальне призначення ювелірних прикрас, яке лягло в основу їхньої мотивації. Це у першу чергу проявляється у назвах тих прикрас, які позначають належність того, хто її носить, до певної групи, тобто ці прикраси виконують ідентифікаційні функції. Соціальне положення людини може також репрезентуватися за допомогою прикрас. Ономасіологічний аналіз вибірки показав, що аналізована ознака відображає також і символічне призначення тих чи інших прикрас. Як правило, ці прикраси символізують певні відношення між особами, які їх носять.

The given article deals with the investigation of the morphological peculiarities of the elements of the lexical semantic field “water transport vessel” in the English language. Word formation processes in the English language are being viewed;morphological features of the studied nominations are being analyzed. The research showed that the most productive word formation patterns in the names of water transport vessels are Vtr / intr + er, N + er. Structural peculiarities of composite nominations have also been studied.

The article outlines the level of presentation and the peculiarities of the definitions of jewellery nominations in the English encyclopedias. The notions of the lexical semantic field, concrete vocabulary have been determined and the thematic classification has been given in the article.The volume of investigated material is 300 nominations, obtained by consecutive selection. Under lexical semantic field we understand a group of words united by a common feature in their lexical meaning. This common feature is known as the integral seme. In our case the word combination “a piece of jewellery” serves as the integral seme which unites the constituents of the given field. The following thematic groups have been singled out and studied basing on the somatic features: hands and arms jewellery, head jewellery, neck jewellery, body jewellery, feet and legs jewellery.

The article studies peculiarities of functioning of precious stones nominations in author’s tales. Direct, indirect and symbolic meanings of the investigated nominations are being viewed in the article. The purpose of this paper is to study the use of gender-specific nominations of precious stones in fairy tales written by British authors. The material of our study is based on two tales by two great authors of English literature: O. Wilde, the writer of the nineteenth century, and A. Carter, the writer of the twentieth century. Both are known for their stories, striving to speak about the reality in a different language. The nominations of precious stones in folk fairy tales are exclusively anthropocentric, i.e. they are used to describe man and his life in literal and figurative senses. The literary sources use the nominations of precious stones to depict other objects - cities, plants, drinks and more. All the recorded cases of the names of precious stones in the analized works can be subdivided into two groups: 1) the nominations of precious stones used in the direct meaning; 2) the nominations of precious stones used figuratively. The nominations of precious stones in the direct meaning are mainly of anthropocentric nature. These nominative units are mostly used to describe various jewelry. In the figurative meaning the nominations of precious stones are employed in stylistic devices of metaphor, simile and epithet. Oscar Wilde describes a variety of things both abstract and concrete, including other precious stones. Unlike male texts, the nominations of precious stones in female prose obtain an important symbolic value for the realization of the author's message. Thus, in fairy tale "The Bloody Chamber" by A. Carter jewelry made of ruby and opal are a gift of the French Marquis (whose prototype is Bluebeard) to his young wife, and the nominations ruby and opal obtain the meaning of "imminent death" and realize a prospective function. In the texts of both authors the nominations of precious stones are used both in the direct and figurative meanings. In the direct meaning these nominations denote jewelry - here we do not establish differences in use. However, the functioning of the vocabulary in denoting precious stones in the figurative meaning was found to have some discrepancies connected with the gender of the author. Thus, in the fairy tales by O. Wilde the nominations of precious stones are mainly used to describe objects and events, and serve as a powerful tool of imagery. By contrast, the main function of the nominations of precious stones in the fairy tales by A. Carter is the realization of textual categories: prospection and concept of the text. In the text the nominations expand their semantic structure through a series of contextual meanings.

The article is dedicated to the investigation of the structure of the lexical semantic field “jewellery” in the English language. The semantic relations between jewellery nominations and core-peripheral structure of the given field are analyzed in the article. The key to analysis of any lexical semantic field is in investigation of its constituents and peculiarities of relations between its core and periphery. We were able to identify two types of relations in lexical semantic field under consideration – hypo-hyperonymic and synonymic. The core of the English language lexical semantic field “jewellery” comprises only such hyperonyms that have a certain number of hyponyms and cover all of the body parts that can be decorated with jewellery: ring (fingers), crown (head), necklace (neck), earring (ear), bracelet (arm). The medial part of the lexical semantic field under consideration includes 59 nominations. These are such nominations that are used less than in 10% cases of tokens of jewellery in our sample and nominations reflected in explanatory dictionaries. It is necessary to note that both core and medial constituents of lexical semantic field “jewellery” are found in non-specialized explanatory dictionaries, yet medial elements are either less frequent in speech or completely absent from our sample. Medial part of the lexical semantic field under consideration includes as well nominations of quite popular kinds of jewellery and names of their wide spread variations. The periphery of lexical semantic field “jewellery” comprises 135 field constituents found exclusively in specialized encyclopedic sources. These include the bigger part of hyponyms and nominations of a large group of jewellery items used to decorate genitalia. As we can see peripheral elements of this lexical semantic field surpass core and medial elements and are less frequently used, while core constituents of the field reveal to the full integral meaning of the units under consideration, i.e. an item of jewellery is an object that decorates a certain part of the human body, highlights the social status of is owner and has a certain symbolic value.

The given article deals with the investigation of the lexical semantic field “precious stones” in the English language, namely its motivation aspect. The etymology of the precious stones nominations is being analyzed and the features upon which the inner form of the investigated nominations are defined in the article. The aim of our research is to analyze the motivational aspect of English nominations of precious stones from the retrospective point of view. The analysis of the etymology of the nominations of precious stones is based on the explanatory and etymological dictionaries of the English language. The research of the etymology in the above mentioned dictionaries, allows to determine not only the source language, the initial meaning and the form of the word - etymon, but also certain motivation and patterns of nomination of the precious stones. All the dictionaries used in the study contain data about the source language, according to which the majority of English names of precious stones were borrowed directly from French, which can be explained by prolonged impact of this language on English and by the peculiarities of the socio-cultural context of this action. Thus, it is clear why the French borrowing make up 53% of our selection. Four times fewer nominations were borrowed from German - 13%, from Latin were borrowed 19% of considered nominations. We single out also a group of names of precious stones of so-called Eastern origin (borrowed from Arabic, Persian and other languages), which make up 13%. As for the rest of the nominations (about 2%), the explanatory dictionaries do not give the information about their origin and etymological dictionaries do not contain these nominations. It should be noted that most of the names were borrowed indirectly, for example, a nominative unit of Greek origin was borrowed by Latin, then - by French, and from French as the source language – it was borrowed by English. We estimate that 43% of analysed nominations are of the Greek origin. The analysis of the lexicographic data of the origin of the names of precious stones allowed to identify several features being the basis of the given nominations. The largest group - 36% - is made up by nominations which reflect the color characteristic of precious stones. For example, the word "ruby" comes from the Latin "rubeus, red". Another group comprises 13 nominations (10%), based on the form of precious stones such as cabochon - way round-cut gems - got its name from the resemblance to head: "cabochon - F. caboche, head". In addition to the above, we distinguish several groups of nominations by such factors as: composition of minerals, for example, the name Titanite comes from the name of a chemical element that is part of the mineral: "titanite - a silicate of calcium and titanium"; lustre, for example, mineral augite: "augite - Gr. auge, brightness "; transparency: "dioptase - Gr. dia, through, optazein, to see "; hardness: "diamond - a doublet of adamant, unconquerable" (as it is known, diamond is the hardest precious stones). All considered examples determine the inner form of nomination – that is color, shape, composition, luster, hardness and transparency. Another group - 39 nominations – is made up by names, which are based on the relative features reflecting relationships of an object with other objects, which often belong to another class. This includes names of precious stones, that got its name from the location - 18%: “chalcedony – after Khalkedon, ancient town in Asia Minor”; names of countries and different localities: “turquoise – fr. OF turqueise, Turkish (because it was first introduced into Europe from Turkey)”; names of people: “zoisite – named after its discoverer, Baron S. Zois von Edelstein, Slovenian nobleman”; magic and healing properties: “amethyst – f. Gk amethustos, not drunken, the stone being supposed to prevent intoxication”. So, the analysis of constituents of lexical semantic field "precious stones " in English on motivational level from retrospective point of view, showed that the basis of nominations of precious minerals is their characteristics (in our case - the appearance (color, shape, luster, transparency, hardness and composition of precious stones), and the relative feature (in our case gems that got their nomination from the location, from the name of a person and form different functions). The color is a conceptual feature, one of the most productive features for the names of precious stones.
