The original Rhaetian line in the municipality of Samedan has been lowered in order to separate the road from the railway. This will bring about significant improvements in traffic conditions in Samedan. A mass-spring system has been installed along a stretch of approximately 288 m in anticipation of possible future building work close to the track. Mass-spring systems are be-ing installed in areas where very stringent vibration protection requirements are in place. As the municipality of Samedan is located more than 1700 m above sea level, temperatures as low as -30 °C are not uncommon during the winter months. All the more reason to ensure that the mass-spring system works properly. Full-surface resilient bedding has been used. The expected natural frequency of the superstructure is in the region of 17 Hz. To allow trains to cross as smoothly as possible, ballast mats have been used to adjust the stiffness of the bedding at the points where the track crosses the mass-spring system.
