A method is described for mass screening at birth for histidinaemia. Blood samples are collected on filter paper cards, as used in the Guthrie test. These samples are transferred, together with standards of histidine and urocanic acid, to thin layer chromatography plates by a type of sandwich technique. The plates can be evaluated semiquantitatively, after development and detection with Pauly's reagent. The detection limit for both substances is less than 10 mg/1 (60 mumol/1). Greater sensitivity and absence of interference, greatly reduce the proportion of equivocal results compared with the Guthrie test.

Major surgical interventions in tumour surgery are still associated with perioperative cardiopulmonary, infectious, thromboembolic, cerebral, and gastrointestinal complications. There are different prophylactic and therapeutic possibilities to anticipate or counteract these perioperative complications. The most important, including beta blockers and alpha-2-agonists for patients at coronary risk, preoperative optimisation of oxygen transport in high risk surgical patients and the concept of multimodal perioperative therapy (analgesia, early mobilisation, early enteral nutrition, and others) combined with high perioperative inspiratory oxygen concentration and maintenance of normothermia to reduce wound infection and cardiac complications are described in this paper.

Since 1974 histidine and urocanic acid was estimated by thin layer chromatography (TLC) in all newborn infants in whom histidine blood levels had to be controlled because of an abnormal Guthrie-test. This entailed using dried blood spotted on filter paper to rationalize newborn screening for histidinaemia thus reducing the work involved. Three cases of histidinaemia were found amongst 66.064 newborn infants. In order to find these, 830 initialy suspicious Guthrie tests had to be checked. This is a control frequency of 1:80. 384 controls were necessitated by inhibition-zones, 482 by initialy elevated blood levels. Histidine and urocanic acid concentrations generally correlated well in the TLC; only 9 newborn infants showed results suggesting histidinaemia (elevated histidine and absent urocanic acid). All three histidinaemias discovered by Guthrie-test aswell were among them, so that in the end, with only 9 controls combining Guthrie-test and TLC, the same effectiveness could have been reached, as compared to 830, when using the Guthrie-test alone.

The early infancy is especially affected by moniliasis in pediatrics. The causes are: broad spread of Candida albicans in the environment of these children, a growing immunity, the immaturity of the skin and an insufficient candida-static activity of the serum. The prematures and the newborns with an irregular birth are especially endangered. This danger is increased by simultaneous antibiotic therapy. The arising mycosis can reach from the relative harmless mouth- and diaper-thrush to serious septic diseases. An effective therapy therefore is very much desired. As new efficacious medicaments the derivates of imidazol, Clotrimazol, have proved satisfactory for the treatment of mycoses. It is as Canesten marketed. The drug possesses a strong activity against numerous fungi, some protozoa, and bacteria. In this paper it is reported on own pharmacokinetic and therapeutic investigations with Clotrimazol. The substance has been very useful for the treatment of mouth- and diaper-thrush. Clotrimazol was administered as BAYb 5097 peroral and local as Canesten -solution 1% and -cream 1%. There were 171 treatments carried out. Essential side-effects were not observed.
