A novel laser lightning rod, developed within the framework of the EU project "Laser Lightning Rod" by Trumpf and the University of Geneva, could help redirect lightning in the future. The laser can be used in situations where conventional lightning rods fail, such as airports or football fields. The laser creates a plasma channel in the air with free electrons, which can conduct the current. At the end of the filament, a conventional lightning rod is used to keep the lightning away from the laser source. The laser has a high pulse energy and a high pulse repetition rate, allowing the plasma channel to remain open permanently. In addition to its use as a lightning rod, the laser could also be used in satellite communication for more stable and faster data transmission. [Extracted from the article]
