Abstract

School foreign language texts should use dialogs oriented to likely actual needs of the learners. Learning goals in schools, unlike those of language courses for adults, should include social competence and personality building. 4. Natuerlicher Zweitsprachenerwerb im Fremdsprachenunterricht? (Natural Acquisition of a Second Language versus Foreign Language Instruction).

Abstract

The "natural" acquisition of a second language is compared to learning from instruction, including aspects of learning such as sequence of items learned (e.g., syntactic) for both children and adults. It is concluded that suggestions offered hitherto for applying findings from research in natural acquisition to the field of foreign language teaching are not applicable. (JB)

The Dismantling of Resistance and Prejudice," by Eva Koberski; (3) "Problemes poses en Susisse par l'enseignement des languages vivantes (Problems Posed in Switzerland by the Teaching of Modern Languages)," by Jean-Bernard Lang; (4) "Lingue in contatto e stratificazione linguistica (Languages in Contact and Linguistic Stratification)," by Ottavio Lurati; and (5) "Planung des Fremdsprachenunterrichts in den Laendern der Europaeischen Gemeinschaft (Planning for Foreign Language Instruction in the Countries of the European Community)," by Franz J. Zapp. Each paper except the first is followed by a summary in English of the discussion engendered by the paper. (JB)
