According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), chronic and episodic headache disorders are among the most frequent medical complaints in humans. In particular, the severe impairment of everyday life due to pain is problematic for the affected patients. Because of individual genetic factors, headache episodes show differences in their origin and course in each patient. In order to make the correct diagnosis and to be able to put up an individual therapy plan, treating physicians have to make decisions based on the information provided by headache calendars, that are kept by patients over an extended period of time. Conventional headache calendars in a paper-based form are no longer state-of-the-art, so the recordings are often not done right away and instead made based on memories if not completely forgotten. Incomplete or erroneous documentation complicates the process of diagnosis and therapy finding. Existing electronic solutions are described by patients as too extensive, which leads to a lack of self-control in the documentation and low compliance. The openness of people towards new digitized solutions in the lifestyle- and healthcare-sector has led to a rapid increase in mobile health (mHealth) applications in recent years. Based on this, a requirement analysis for a digital headache calendar as an application for mobile devices was carried out. Progressive muscle relaxation techniques after E. Jacobson were evaluated regarding their integration in the application as an additional benefit for the patient. Behavior change theories and gamification mechanisms were discussed on their usefulness to increasing motivation andself-control. Following, an extensive literature research on the basics of chronic and episodic primary headache disorders, motivation theory and behavior change as well as a fundamental analysis of existing digital solutions, a survey and individual interviews of long-term patients were carried out.The software development process was carried out iteratively based on the user-centered design process. Using the Java programming language and technologies such as the Android Software Development Kit (SDK), Gradle Build-Tool and SQLite, a digital headache calendar was developed as an Android application for smartphones. In addition to the headache documentationmodule and the evaluation options provided therein, an exercise module with progressive relaxation exercises including gamification elements was integrated into the app as well. As part of an eight-week evaluation phase, the app was evaluated regarding the coverage of the previously identified requirements and user acceptance. The knowledge gained from and the results provided by the evaluation were further discussed and interpreted to answer the scientific questions raised.

Weiters bleibt zu zeigen, wie mithilfe der aufgezeigten psychologisch-motivatorischen Verbesserungen auch ein verbessertes Nutzerverhalten herbeigeführt werden kann., Online surveys are an essential tool for collecting data and are therefore widely used in research and marketing. One problem of most online surveys, is the amount of resulting data its quality being heavily dependent on the interest and motivation of the participants. Gamification is an approach to diminish these negative effects, by using game elements in order to motivate the participants. This work describes results of a comparative evaluation on micro and macro gamified survey designs with the purpose of analyzing the advantages and disadvantage of each design method. The micro gamified design was implemented by gamifying spatially and time-wise small elements of the survey such as interactions with text and list input fields. Interactions regarding the overall survey structure like starting, navigating and finishing the survey were part of the macro gamified design. The four different survey designs were developed in an iterative design process. Comparative evaluation results from a study with N=118 participants indicate that both micro and macro gamification can be used in order to increase the subjective motivation of the survey participants. Although, a significant change in respondent behavior could not been observed. This observation aligns with related work studying the same field. The results of the study suggest that micro and macro gamification can be recommended to be used both separately and in combination in order to improve the motivation and user experience of survey participants. Future work is needed in order to validate the benefits of micro and macro gamification on the basis of further case studies. Additional studies should investigate ways of improving user behavior by using these psychological motivational enhancements and the improved user experience.

The aim of this master thesis is to develop a playful learning environment for the tasks of the Bebras contest (a contest, the goal of which is to awaken young people's interest for computer science concepts) in the form of a mobile app for the Android operating system. The scientific question reads as follows: "How can motivating game design elements which support the attainment of learning goals be integrated into a mobile application for the learning of computer science concepts?" To answer this question, the concept of gamification is discussed theoretically and outlines of the Bebras initiative and the Android operating system are given. Moreover, game design elements necessary for a gamified design concept are identified in the context of theoretical discussion. Following, such a design concept is composed and the game design elements and their interaction with each other are explained in-depth. Central outcome of this thesis is a prototype which was developed with the Android Software Development Kit (Android SDK) and the development environment Eclipse having the Android Developer Tools Plugin (ADT) installed. To conclude, an evaluation of this prototype takes place which aims to highlight qualitative flaws and errors and to answer the question if the game design elements are integrated meaningfully into the prototype. The following scientific methods are used in this thesis: (1) broad literature research about the theoretical background of gamification in the context of learning and instruction and about motivating game design elements that can support the attainment of learning goals (2) creation of a design concept based on that research (3) development of a prototype in the form of a mobile app for the Android operating system (4) summative evaluation by means of an online questionnaire to assess the usability and quality of the game design elements' integration into the prototype

User Experience ,Motivation ,MDA-Framework ,game element ,Online Umfragen ,online survey ,MDA-Modell ,Spielelemente ,Gamification ,Gamifizierung - Abstract
Die Methode bietet Designern ein strukturiertes Vorgehensmodell, Inspiration bezueglich Design-Moeglichkeiten und Entscheidungshilfe fuer Design-Entscheidungen., Response rate and residence time are critical factors for the success of online surveys. Both can be increased through improved user experience. Gamification promises better user experience by integrating playful elements. This work presents method for gamifying online surveys. At the beginning, game elements which suite to online surveys and areas in which they are used efficiently, were validated. By using the MDA-model, the collected game elements where broken down into mechanic, dynamic and aesthetic aspects. The resulting design space represents the base of the method. The application of the method is iterative and begins with the analysis phase. In this step, game elements are determined, which are integrated in the surveys. By using the MDA-model, game elements were integrated into the survey. After the completion of the gamified online survey, a summative evaluation is done by an expert with regards to survey design. In an interview, the embedding of the individual game elements and the resulting outcome will be assessed. The practical applicability of the proposed method for the gamification of online surveys is illustrated by a case study. During the iterative development process, user tests are used for evaluating the method. It offers designers a structured process model, inspiration regarding design options and decision support for design decisions.
