Abstract: Background: The significance of religion and spirituality (R/S) for addictive disorders is comparatively well- studied, especially within the scope of the Twelve Steps program of Alcoholics Anonymous. In contrast, we know almost nothing about the role of R/S in the early treatment phase of detoxification. Aim: In this pilot study, we test the hypothesized enhancement of Religious-Spiritual-State of Mind (RSB) during detoxification. Methods: For this purpose, fifty-two patients (36 m, 16 f) with alcohol dependence syndrome (F 10.2.) were examined using a questionnaire on RSB at the beginning and at the end of their inpatient detoxification from alcohol. Results: Consistent with the hypothesis, an increase in RSB was found during the treatment period (p =.007, d = 0.40). The largest increase was shown by the subscale "Hope (immanent)" (p <.001, d = 0.51), while the other five subscales did not show any significant changes. Conclusion: We discuss possible selection effects regarding the sample and the practical significance of hope as a resource for the early treatment of addictive disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
