The bacterial infectious disease cholera has repeatedly claimed many lives since the 19th century and has spread across the globe over time. The last serious epidemic in Germany was in 1892. Currently, there is an increased risk of cholera outbreaks in parts of Asia, Africa and South America due to poor hygienic conditions. In addition, cholera outbreaks occur repeatedly in crisis areas after wars or natural disasters. Most recently, cholera has been reported in Haiti, Syria, and possibly in Ukraine.
