El Quijote y Las Meninas representan, desde dominios artísticos diferentes, una reflexión simbólica acerca de la naturaleza del propio arte. El Quijote puede ser considerado un libro de libros, donde el fenómeno literario se escenica y forma parte de la ficción bajo la forma de bibliotecas, idealización de libros y personajes, crítica literaria por parte de diversos personajes, y la historia es, ella misma, una alegoría de la literatura. Su coetánea Las Meninas, obra pictórica cumbre de la reexión metaartística, presenta un retrato colectivo en el que la pintura se abre para dar cabida al artista, a los espectadores y, mediante un juego de espejos, crea la noción de perspectiva. Ambas obras parten de temáticas y situaciones concretas que sirven a sus autores para componer historias y escenas de valor trascendente porque encarnan la esencia del fenómeno artístico. Novela de novelas, pintura de pinturas, el Quijote y Las Meninas tienen una preocupación común que se va expresando a medida que la novela avanza y que los diferentes planos que integran la pintura se desarrollan y se complementan. Este estudio se propone ahondar en estas confluencias teóricas y pragmáticas propias del Barroco que giran en torno a la expresión de las artes dentro de las artes.
