Although rather distant from the Western Indian Ocean basin, the southern Levant can be considered fairly included in the trading dynamics regulating movement and use of exotic goods, especially luxury raw materials, being frequently the final destination of this kind of items. Southern Levantine jewelry in the Late Bronze Age represents a widely eclectic group revealing a remarkable level of artistic talent and technical expertise. Most products are manufactured of gold and silver, using precious and semiprecious stones originating from eastern Africa and the Indus Valley. The opulence of the jeweler’s art, and in particular the extensive use of gemstones, has given rise to several hypotheses which are briefly discussed in the paper. The provenance of the raw materials will be examined, as well as the archaeological context of finds of finished products. The paper addresses the specialized production of personal ornaments, paying attention in particular to the players in this process and the ultimate effect of their work.

Like many of Wenders’ films, the book Una volta (Einmal. Bilder und Geschichten, 1994; Once: Pictures and Stories) is the result of a fruitful encounter between different arts. Wenders now takes on the role of photographer and narrator, while never completely abandoning the more usual role of director. The beginning of every short composition in Einmal, associated with one or more images, is the usual one of fairy tales. However, the word “once” that precedes as a title most of the compositions is not just an intertextual reference to the genre of children’s literature. It is more a sort of declaration of poetics, the choice of a specific stylistic register, as well as an attempt to adhere to a certain way of knowing and experiencing existence. It is the same way of knowing characteristic of children, says Wenders, connected—like the photographer’s shot—to the moment, without any care or regard for the past or the future. The stories that follow one another do not, at least not always, serve as captions for the images, nor do they necessarily offer the reader clarifications regarding the photographs placed next to them or the circumstances in which the they were shot. In this book Wenders works “spontaneously,” choosing for each shot the first story that “comes to his mind.” The point of connection between writing and image, as well as the fulcrum of the aesthetics of Wenders’ phototext, is undoubtedly the concept of Disposition (Einstellung), which is a privileged place of observation from which the photographer’s eye chooses to look, but also the narrative engine of the whole story, as well as, again, the centre from which the different threads of the story radiate and then return to converge. The object of my contribution will be precisely this idea of Einstellung, with the aim of highlighting its implications and potential.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Machine Learning (ML) algorithms have become popular in many fields, including applications related to turbomachinery and heat transfer. The key properties of ML are the capability to partially tackle the problem of slowing down of Moore’s law and to dig-out correlations within large datasets like those available on turbomachinery. Data come from experiments and simulations with different degree of accuracy, according to the test-rig or the CFD approach. When dealing with modelling of turbulent flows in turbomachinery there is a constant trade-off between accuracy and computational costs, but starting from the large amount of data on turbomachinery performance, with ML it is possible to train a learner to correct and improve CFD. The aim of this work is to investigate an innovative data-driven approach that could lead to a significant improvement in the analysis of heat transfer in turbulent flows. The effects of Reynolds number and wall temperature on heat transfer for a double forward-facing step with two squared obstacles were investigated by numerical simulations carried out in OpenFOAM. Then a machine-learnt model was derived using a regression algorithm. The results of regressor showed that a data-driven approach can effectively predict results of the RANS model.

The Emerging Technology Collection at Carleton University is a successful collaboration between three units on campus: the Library, the Discovery Centre for Undergraduate Research and Engagement, and Information Technology Services. The Emerging Technology Collection began as a pilot project in January 2015 to circulate Raspberry Pis and Arduinos at the request of faculty in the Engineering Department. Due to the success of the pilot project, the collection now provides access to over 70 pieces of technology equipment for loan to support experiential learning for students. Development and implementation of the Collection is discussed. The Emerging Technology Collection has provided a number of academic benefits, such as innovative student projects, outreach and faculty engagement, and community engagement. There have also been benefits for the Library including promotion of the Library collection, continuing education for Library staff, and significant usage of the Emerging Technology Collection. Some of the challenges faced during the development of this collection are analyzed, including the need to register certain products, maintenance and upkeep of the collection, damage and replacement costs, and promoting the use of emerging technology across disciplines. This successful project underscores the value of a shared space where different units on campus can work together to develop and deliver an innovative new service. Finally, this project demonstrates the value of innovation in academic libraries that are responsive to new developments and deliver useful services. Incorporating innovation into the organizational culture of academic libraries can be a challenge, but it is possible when Library leadership actively supports new ideas and services.

Polymer-matrix composites containing conductive nanoparticles are a potential means for achieving an appealing combination of multifunctional properties for their use as structural parts in the aerospace field. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have been being looked forward to as the next generation of new and avant-garde aircraft structures because they are exceptionally coveted competitor materials to replace traditional metal components for lightning strike protection. In this regard, nanocomposites at low concentration of CNFs ranging from 0.05% up to 2% by wt to impart electron conduction in tetrafunctional epoxy resin have been prepared and characterized. The aim of this work concerns the use of Tunneling AFM (TUNA) as revolutionary tool able to correlate the electrical current map with the correspondent local morphology of CNF/resins. TUNA technique has proven to play a leading role in the identification of current paths and electrical interconnections, even without altering the morphology with usual treatments employed to create electrical contacts to the ground. Summing up, the good electrical performance together with the high mechanical properties due to a conductive cross-linked network of CNFs inside the resin demonstrate a charming applicative potential for the formulated nanocomposites as structural materials capable to provide a safe conductive path on the exterior skin, preventing serious damage to the aircraft.

Epoxy nanocomposites fulfill tight and compelling industrial requirements in the field of structural material for aeronautical applications. In this paper the development and characterization of nanocomposites obtained by filling tetrafunctional epoxy resin (tetraglycidyl methylene dianiline cured with the aromatic diamine 4,4’-diaminodiphenylsulfone, named T20BD) with carbon nanofibers (CNF) is discussed. A filler amount ranging from 0.05% to 2%wt is considered. The DC volume conductivity and the dielectric characteristics (ϵ’) of the nanocomposites in the frequency range 100Hz-1MHz are analyzed and compared with those of the pure resin. Atomic force microscopy, mapping the local topography by means of tunneling effect, is used for recording the electrical percolation path for nanocomposites. In particular, the case 1.3wt% of CNF filled nanocomposites that exhibits a stable behavior of the conductivity in the full investigated frequency range, is here reported. The developed filled epoxy used in carbon fiber reinforced composites, shows enhanced electrical properties leading to better electromagnetic (EM) performances in EM coatings, EM shields and filters or radar absorber materials (RAMs).

- Abstract
Summary: Introduction: Squamous-cell carcinoma is the second most common form of skin cancer. It can develop on normal skin, actinic keratoses, leukoplakia, and burn scars. The tumor is characterized by remarkable variability at the macroscopic and histopathologic levels. Case report: A 93-year-old woman was admitted to nursing home with a diagnosis of dementia syndrome and squamous cell nodular carcinoma on cheeks and neck region. The physical examination revealed firm, black excrescences with irregular surfaces over both cheekbones, which were roughly the size of hazelnuts. Similar nodules were present with ulcers on other areas of the face. The patient was admitted to the day hospital twice for wide excision of the tumors in the zygomatic region. Later, the neck tumors were removed, and the wound was repaired with a rotation flap after careful control of bleeding. For the latter surgery, the patient was hospitalized for a few days in a geriatric ward to ensure optimal medical care and psychological support. The histological examination revealed ulcerated, well-differentiated squamous-cell carcinoma that extended down to the subcutaneous layer. Shortly after surgery, she returned to the nursing home to resume rehabilitation and group therapy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Planar MFC prototypes were constructed and experimented to operate as sensors of the anoxic condition in a denitrification tank of a wastewater treatment plant in Italy, during different times in 2018 – 2019. Electrodes were differently enriched with carbon paint containing nanotubes and CeO2 nanoparticles. Performances of different electrodes were compared. Results underline critical anoxic conditions in the tank, that caused a very low signal and phenomena of signal reversion during some period of the year. the activity of aerobic microorganisms and protozoa growing and grazing the bacteria on the electrodes strongly influenced the signal of the MFCs. The presence of nanoceria enhanced, for some extent, the MFC signal, both in presence of reversing trends and in absence of these phenomena. In absence of reversing trends, nanoceria enhanced the MFC voltage. Such signal trends from MFCs can give, in real-time, useful information to optimize the purification process without the necessity of frequent biological and chemical analyses.
