The challenge of neonatal care is to overcome the risks posed by the transnatal discontinuity, particularly in case of premature birth when this discontinuity occurs at a non-optimal time in development. For this reason, sensory therapeutic interventions are proposed in Neonatology units. They frequently involve tactile stimulation, based on the importance of the tactile modality for physical and psychological growth, well-being and bonding of the human neonate. However, despite the early development of the tactile modality and its critical role in neonatal interactions with the environment, we still lack fundamental knowledge of its functioning and long-term implications on motor, emotional, cognitive, and social development. This knowledge is needed for clinicians to propose innovative therapeutic interventions, adapted to the capabilities of premature neonates. Therefore, we propose to take advantage of tactile processing abilities in preterm neonates, like their orienting responses, to characterize interactions between tactile perception, developmental care, and pain management methods. Evaluation and understanding of these interactions are indeed necessary to imagine preventive and therapeutic tactile interventions for neonatal care, which respect the balance between shortterm benefits and long-term effects. In his famous essay, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, Walter Benjamin compares the daily experience of buildings with the perception of films. His comparison relies on the peculiar concept of “tactile reception“, he opposes to the optically oriented traditional attitude towards art. The concept encompasses two essential traits: on the one hand, it designates the fact that films do not require a contemplative, focused attention, but a habitual, distracted approach, similar to that by which we perceive buildings in our everyday life-world. On the other hand, Benjamin’sconcept points to a particular “chock-effect” produced by cinematic experience, through its constant change of perspectives and points of view. By this, it challenges precisely the same form of ambient perception required in numerous situations of our daily life in the modern city. The two determinations sketch out a unitary concept that shows obvious similarities to the phenomenological idea of a “life-worldly circumspection” (Umsicht), a specific manner of sight guiding everyday practical life.

The coding of tactile information, as opposed to visual and acoustic, is still misunderstood. This PhD work is focused on the initial phenomena which lead to emit an opinion on the perception of an explored surface. The originality of the work relies on four methodological pillars: (i) the complete characterization of the finger pad properties; (ii) the elaboration and characterization of a variety of determinist textured surfaces at the sub-millimeter scale; (iii) the in vivo characterization of the frictional and vibratory behavior of the contact between a finger pad and a textured surface together with a numeric study on the contact mechanics; (iv) the characterization of the tactile perception by a panel of volunteers. It is shown that even though the surfaces are textured, the friction coefficient between these surfaces and a human finger is mostly driven by adhesion in the contact. A second major outcome concerns the physical phenomena which influence the tactile perception. First, it appears that the textured surfaces used in this study can be discriminated according to three psycho-perceptive dimensions: “slippery”, “vibrating” and “rough”. Then, the intensity of the slippery perception is solely driven by the friction coefficient, while the vibrating perception is driven by both the friction coefficient and the friction induced vibrations. Finally, the intensity of the roughness perception depends solely geometric features of the texture asperities.; Contrairement aux sens visuels et auditifs, le codage de l’information tactile est encore méconnu.

Studies suggest that such sensory alteration can be found in people who have undergone musical training. The interaction between what is heard and felt is especially important when an individual is playing a musical instrument. Musical training is well-known as a form of multisensory training that includes interactions between auditory, visual and tactile modalities. This can lead to anatomical and structural reorganizations in the cortical regions associated with these sensory systems. Several behavioral studies have revealed improved tactile perception skills in musicians. It is still unclear whether these improvements can be found for more complex processes, such as recognition of emotions. Similar alteration of tactile abilities may also be found in another population, namely early-deaf individuals. Imaging studies have shown that vibrotactile stimuli activate auditory regions following deafness, suggesting a significant tactile reorganization of their cortex. Yet, from a behavioral point of view, tactile perception in deaf seems similar to controls. Recently, it has been suggested that more complex tactile processes may reveal behavioral differences between deaf and normal-hearing individuals. Unfortunately, similarly to musicians, these processes have not been investigated to date. The main objective of this thesis is therefore to evaluate via non-musical and musical tasks i) tactile, auditory and multisensory perception of music among musicians and ii) tactile perception of music among deaf individuals. For musicians, results of this thesis suggest enhanced auditory, tactile and audio-tactile frequency discrimination capabilities (Study 1). Also, results suggest an increase perception of emotions in music, which suggests improvements for complex auditory and tactile abilities (Study 2). These studies support the hypothesis that long-term musical training: i) leads to improved auditory and tactile perception, but especially that it extends to complex tactile processes, ii) has an impact at all hierarchical levels of sensory and cognitive processing For deaf individuals, results revealed a higher error rate during the tactile temporal order detection task (Study 3). This result suggests that spatial mapping of touch is impaired in deaf individuals. In addition, the study measuring tactile perception of emotion in music revealed that they are able to identify emotions via tactile modality solely. Also, improvements were found for the identification of happy emotion via tactile modality solely (Study 4). This increased ability to perceive happiness in a melody via the tactile modality illustrates that complex tactile skills can be improved following longstanding hearing deprivation. These two studies together suggest that complex non-musical and musical tactile abilities are altered in the deaf individual, which supports studies suggesting a cortical reorganization of auditory and tactile areas following long-term auditory deprivation.

The neuroconstructivist theoretical framework of cognitive development, taking into account the variability of the constraints that act from the conception to shape development, is relevant to consider the early influence of sensory experiences on the neurobehavioral development of preterm neonates. They evolve in a particular environment and are vulnerable to neurodevelopmental disorders, to which atypical tactile and temporal processing are associated. The aim of the thesis is to study tactile and temporal abilities in preterm newborns and to evaluate the effect of the early environment on these perceptions. We included 61 preterm neonates (born between 32 and 34 weeks of gestational age (wGA)). At 35 weeks of corrected gestational age, we measured orienting responses (forearm, hand, and fingers movements) during vibrotactile stimulation of their hand and forearm, during a habituation and dishabituation paradigm, the dishabituation being either a location change or a pause in the stimulation sequence. Preterm newborns displayed a manual orienting response to vibrotactile stimuli which significantly decreased when the stimulus was repeated, regardless of the stimulated location on the limb. Habituation was delayed in subjects born at a younger gestational age, smaller birth weight, and having experienced more painful care procedures. Preterm neonates perceived changes in stimulus location and interstimulus time interval, suggesting a prenatal development of temporal processing capacities. These temporal processing abilities and their use to generate sensory prediction are being evaluated in a second study. 19 premature neonates (born between 31 and 32wGA) were presented with a tactile sequence (regular or irregular) at 33 and 35 weeks of corrected GA. Variations in cerebral blood flow were measured. At both corrected GA, tactile stimuli are associated with a hemodynamic response in the primary somatosensory cortex. At 33 weeks of corrected GA, omissions in the sequence are associated with an increase in cerebral blood flow, which indicates that premature neonates form sensory predictions, regardless of their experimental group. This thesis work allows to better characterize the tactile and temporal processing abilities in premature neonates, which lack recent and thorough investigation.

Far from being a mere envelope around our bodies, the skin forms a mechanical, physical, chemical and immunological barrier. This protective task falls in large part in the outermost layer, the stratum corneum. However, in our daily lives, the repeated friction of cellulose tissues against the skin surface may induce discomfort feelings and cutaneous reactions. In particular, during colds, the repeated friction of tissues could compromise the skin around the nose and induce painful irritation. This work is about meeting consumer needs in terms of softness and user comfort of cellulose tissues. To this end, the study was decomposed into two main parts. The first part was devoted to the quantification of the tactile quality of the tissues. The second one was interested in the skin/tissue interaction and the potential irritant effect during the repeated friction. In order to quantify the sensorial quality of tissues, we developed an artificial finger that mimics the human touch. This device enables the measurement of the friction coefficient of the tissue against the skin surface, and the evaluation of the generated vibrations. On one hand, the results showed that the vibrations were a good indicator of the softness of a tissue. In another hand, we showed that the friction coefficient was related to the surface texture of the tissue. These key results allowed us to have a rapid, simple and reproducible method to evaluate the tactile quality of a tissue. This method is very useful for the paper industry which was previously using expensive and time-consuming sensorial panels. In the second part of the thesis, we studied the cutaneous reactions induced by the repeated friction of tissues with different softnesses. This study was performed in vivo, on 59 volunteers of the laboratory. Two innovative devices were developed. First, an in vivo rotary tribometer was developed to reproduce the repeated friction of the tissue onto the skin. The advantage of this device is the full control of the friction parameters such as the applied normal force, the sliding velocity and the duration of the test. In order to evaluate the cutaneous reactions, we developed a contactless indentation device which is able to measure the mechanical properties of the skin. The results showed that the cutaneous reactions were higher when the paper was unsoft. The cutaneous irritation was visible through the increase of the trans-epidermal water loss, the redness and the blood flow of the skin and through the decrease of its mechanical properties. Beyond the findings, during the thesis, we developed new innovative and effective methods to characterise the tactile quality of tissues and evaluate the cutaneous reactions induced by the repeated friction of them on the skin.; Loin d’être une simple enveloppe pour notre corps, la peau constitue une frontière mécanique, physique, chimique et immunologique d’une remarquable efficacité.

Seeing the speaker’s articulatory gestures significantly enhances auditory speech perception. A key issue is whether cross-modal speech interactions only depend on well-known auditory and visual inputs from the speaker’s voice and face or, rather, might also be triggered by other sensory sources less common in speech communication, such as tactile information or vision of the tongue movements. Another goal of the present research was to determine the possible role of the motor system in these multisensory processes. Finally, we used electro-encephalographic, functional magnetic resonance imaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques in order to better understand the time course and the functional neuroanatomical organization of these integration mechanisms. Our results extent the concept of “multisensory speech perception” by highlighting a facilitation of auditory processes during audio-haptic speech perception as well as during the observation of our own articulatory movements. They also provide new evidence in favor of a functional role of the motor system in speech perception by demonstrating an increase of motor activity during visuo-lingual speech perception and a more bilateral ventral premotor cortex recruitment during speech perception across aging. Taken together, our results reinforce the idea of a functional coupling and a co-structuring of speech perception and production systems. Our work support the existence of connections between sensory, integrative and motor regions allowing the implementation of multisensory, sensorimotor and predictive processes in the perception and understanding of speech actions., Voir les gestes articulatoires de son interlocuteur permet d’améliorer significativement le décodage et la compréhension du signal acoustique de parole émis.

Rodents use their facial whiskers to probe their environment by touch. Any contact induces both slow quasi-static and fast vibratory mechanical stresses that propagate down to the base of vibrissae where dedicated mechanoreceptors detect them. It is this phase of mechanical transduction of the tactile information operated by the whiskers, prior to any neural coding, that we have studied here. By combining biomimetic experiments and theoretical modeling, we have sought to separate the relative contributions of both slow and fast components, for the detection and localization of objects, as well as the perception of textures. One of the challenges of this work was to understand what determines from a mechanical point of view, rodents remarkable temporal and spatial precision. For this, we have first studied the shock dynamic between a whisker and an object and shown that the radial position of the object could be encoded both in the rate of change of the quasi-static component of the base torque as well as in the amplitude and frequency of the induced vibrations. In addition, by mimicking the whisking mode adopted by rodents, we have shown that using the vibratory component allows rodents to detect contacts faster and more robustly. We then studied the perception of elementary textures and showed that the maximum variation of the base torque depends univocally on their size. Experiments on anesthetized rats, combining whisker optical tracking and cortical neural activity measurements, led us to propose an encoding mechanism of texture perception where the surface topography is modulated by the vibration properties of the whiskers and demodulation occurs at a neuronal level., Les rongeurs utilisent leurs vibrisses pour sonder tactilement leur environnement.

This document presents the conception, the characterisation and the use of an artificial touch system for a study on tactile texture recognition. The artificial touch system is composed of an artificial finger and an exploration device allowing an automatic translation of the finger on samples. The artificial finger is based on a tri-axis force MEMS sensor covered with a polyurethane artificial skin. Thus, the MEMS measure the three spatial components of the efforts transmitted by the polyurethane coating. To rub the finger against surfaces, two exploration devices have been conceived successively. Thanks to the first one, we rapidly organized some texture recognition experiments, to evaluate the ability of the finger to discriminate texture. The second device, allows a better control of the exploration parameters, like moving speed or forces applied. This device also allows us to characterize the artificial finger during a simple contact task or while rubbing the artificial finger on a surface. A study of that kind allowed us to better understand the physical phenomena taking place during tactile texture exploration. The first experiments on texture exploration showed a good sensitivity of the artificial finger to detect the weave form periodicity of a textile, or to discriminate two different kinds of textures (paper v.s. textile). Next, the artificial finger is evaluated for the discrimination of ten kinds of papers. The signals given by the artificial finger while rubbing a texture are showing some problems of reproducibility. However, associated with several classification algorithms, the artificial finger gives good results for the discrimination of the ten textures, in particular thanks to spectral characteristics extracted from the signals. This experiment was run several times with different protocols, in order to validate the classification results.

International audience; The Tactos system of perceptual supplementation allows for tactile reading of shapes and spatial organisation of objects on computer screens. The aim of the present project is to extend the use of this device to situations of distal tactile interaction via the Internet network. Here we report the initial results of an analysis of patterns of use in context, in order to test the material and functional possibilities provided by this extension. Two blind adolescents, with different levels of expertise in using Tactos, have tested various technical possibilities and various contents. It appears that the use of new effectors is possible if a certain level of proficiency has been reached in the use of the stylus and the graphic tablet. Similarly, the question of recourse to bimodality is posed in order to improve the acquisition of reference points in space. Finally, the passage to a “group” situation seems to be necessary for the use of the device to give rise to shared meanings and the creation of norms.; Le Système de suppléance perceptive Tactos permet la lecture tactile des formes et dispositions spatiales d’objets sur l’écran de l’ordinateur.

Two experimental methods have been developed to measure, for an elastomer / glass multi-contact interface, the mechanical fields inside the volume (MEMS force micro-sensor embedded under the elastic film) and at the interface (transmitted light contact imaging), at length scales intermediate between the apparent contact one and the micro-contacts one.The MEMS measurement has allowed us to obtain the stress fields under normal load and in steady sliding regime, with a very good agreement with simple mechanical models. For periodically rough substrates the relation between the stress spectrum and the surface topography has been interpreted in terms of spectral filtering, relevant to understanding tactile perception. The optical measurement has allowed us, by analysing the spatial distribution of the intensity, to obtain the interfacial pressure field. Its dependence with the rough layer properties has been confronted to the Greenwood-Tripp model.
