This paper examines the teaching of Igbo literature adapted from F.C.Ogbalu’s Uremma-one of the folktales in an Igbo literature titled Nza na Obu. The literature text is a compendium of popular folktales and folksongs of Igbo people in Eastern Nigeria, and was in the Nigerian schools’ Igbo language/literature curriculum for decades. The paper shares a pedagogical experiment involving the teaching of the Igbo language folktale as literature and as a video film in a class of young 18 teenagers. Odum na Akwaeke is the video adaptation of Akwaeke(Uremma) folktale. The folktale was adapted into “Odum na Akwaeke,” (Amayo Uzo Philip dir., 1998)- a popular narrative video film, and became one of Nollywood (Nigerian film industry)’s most popular Igbo films at its release in 1998. The pedagogical experiment reveals that video film viewership affects the students’ appreciation of not just the literature, but also the language; and equally creates a warm learning atmosphere which enables the students to cooperate, share and contribute in the learning exercise. The research experiment buttresses the importance of interactive teaching methodology in teaching and learning indigenous knowledge. The paper concludes that faced with globalization and persistent technological invasion, scholars particularly those interested in African culture and cultural studies need to reflect on newer and innovative approaches to teaching local languages and literature in order to sustain youth interest in African culture/ cultural studies in a technological era.

- Abstract
This graphic overview uses 28 bar and pie graphs to illustrate Canada's ethnic and linguistic diversity. Information was drawn primarily from 1986 census figures. The following categories are examined: (1) ethnic origin; (2) language; (3) visible minorities (nonwhites); (4) aboriginal peoples; and (5) immigration. Information is reported for the nation, the provinces, the territories, and the major Canadian urban centers of Toronto (Ontario), Montreal (Quebec), and Vancouver (British Columbia). The following highlights are included: (1) Canada is a multicultural country; (2) the extent of cultural diversity varies by region; (3) there are many different ethnic communities and different provinces have different ethnic mixes; (4) the major cities have diverse populations; (5) many Canadians have nonofficial languages (neither French nor English) as mother tongues and continue to speak them at home; (6) 1.2 percent of Canadians cannot speak either French or English; (7) over 90 percent of visible minorities live in four provinces and two-thirds live in the three largest cities; (8) over 700,000 Canadians report aboriginal ancestry; (9) the visible minority and aboriginal populations are younger than the total population; (10) almost four million Canadians are immigrants; and (11) the immigrants' countries-of-origin are changing. A translation in French is included. A four-item bibliography, a glossary, and 26 tables of statistical data are appended. (FMW)

This is based on the PageRank3 network analysis method. In the context of citation networks, it estimates the importance of each article based on its centrality in the whole network. This measure was calculated using the PaperRanking (https://github.com/diwis/zdhPaperRanking) library4. The washers dataset features 70 defective parts. The gears and screws datasets feature 35 defective, 35 intact and several hundred unannotated parts. Some defects, such as notches and holes, are visible in most images (illuminations) with intensity and texture variations among them, while others, such as scratches, are only visible in a few.fghgj We split the datasets into train and test sets. The train sets contain 32 samples, and the test set 38 samples. Each sample comprises 108 images (each captured under a different illumination angle), an automatically extracted foreground segmentation mask, and a hand-labeled defect segmentation mask.fghgfj This dataset is challenging mainly because: each raw sample consists of 108 gray-scale images of resolution 512×512 and therefore takes 27MB of space; the metallic surfaces produce many specular reflections that sometimes saturate the camera sensors; the annotations are not very precise because the exact extent of defect contours is always subjective; the defects are very sparse also in the spatial dimensions: they cover only about 0.2% of the total image area in gears, 0.8% in screws, and 1.4% in washers; this creates an unbalanced dataset with a highly skewed class representation. gfhj The dataset is organized as follows: each sample resides in the Test, Train, or Unannotated directory; each sample has its own directory which contains the individual images, the foreground, and defect segmentation masks; each image is stored in 8-bit greyscale png format and has a resolution of 512 x 512 pixels; Image file names are formatted using three string fields separated with the underscore character: prefix_sampleNr_illuminationNr.png, where the prefix is e.g. washer, the sampleNr might be a three-digit number 001, and the illuminationNr is formed of 3 digits, first corresponding to the elevation index (1 - highest angle, 9 - lowest angle), and the additional two corresponding to the azimuth index (01-12). Each dataset contains light_vectors.csv, which contains the illumination angles (in lexicographic order of the illuminationNr), and light_intensities.csv that contains the numbers corresponding to the light intensity on the scale from 0 to 127. Please, be aware, that the azimuth angles were not calibrated and might be a few degrees misaligned.fdhfgj These data have been cleaned and integrated with data from COVID-19-TweetIDs and from other sources (e.g., PMC).

Department of the Secretary of State, Ottawa (Ontario). Multiculturalism Directorate., Karim, Karim H., and Sansom, Gareth
- Abstract
This bibliography lists 135 publications dealing with the portrayal and employment of Canadians of all ethnic backgrounds in mainstream Canadian media. A broad definition of mass media encompassing all widely distributed communicative materials, including educational textbooks and forms of hate material, is used for the purposes of the bibliography. Materials that deal with ethnic or community media and with the mainstream media images of foreign groups of people are not presented. The bibliography includes a wide range of relevant media research, content analyses, conference proceedings, task force reports, speeches, legislation, industry codes, and depiction guides. Of the 135 entries, which are arranged alphabetically by personal or corporate author, 76 are annotated. The annotations generally use the terminology that appears in the respective textual materials in order to maintain the integrity of the authors' discursive intent. Among subjects covered in the cited works are the following: (1) children and prejudice; (2) broadcast industry role and responsibilities; (3) ethnic images and stereotypes propagated through media; (4) advertising codes and standards; (5) sex role stereotypes in the media; (6) media responses to cultural and racial diversity; (7) media depiction of immigration and immigrants; (8) media images of native Americans; (9) textbook bias; and (10) the representation of visible minorities in the media. The individual career, defined by all positions, strategies and changes that occurr in a lifetime, depends heavily on educational and social experiences that are preceding it or accompaning it. Career planning is particularly important for both the individual and the organization. A realistic career plan makes the individual perceive opportunities in relation to his own possibilities; he will be more motivated and the likelyhood to be satisfied will be much higher. In this context, the paper presents the results of a study carried out on successive series of students enrolled in the last year of study of a masters program in tourism at the Faculty of Commerce, Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest. The research examined over two academic years (2011-2013) the extent to which students were aware of themselves in terms of a career in tourism. Three dimensions of awareness were followed: the self, the strategy required to manage a successful career and the opportunity to develop a career in tourism. The results are of interest not only to students and universities that offer such programs, but also to employers. One important conclusion is that professional counseling centers should receive more attention. It could be a joint project of universities and business.

Department of the Secretary of State, Ottawa (Ontario). Multiculturalism Directorate.
- Abstract
This document, in English and French, provides a graphic overview of statistical data on aging and ethnicity in Canada. Most of the information was drawn from 1981 and 1986 census figures and immigration statistics. Part 1, "Multicultural Canada," provides background information on the multicultural nature of the population. One map and three graphs illustrate the regional distribution of ethnic groups, group sizes, the ethnic composition of selected urban areas, and the variety of mother tongues. Part 2, "Aging Multicultural Canada," relates ethnic group diversity to characteristics important in the consideration of aging. Eight graphs illustrate the following topics: (1) age discrimination within ethnic groups; (2) the ratio of the senior population to the working population; (3) the number of female seniors in urban areas; (4) the marital status and living arrangements of seniors; and (5) the countries-of-origin of Canadian-born and foreign-born seniors. Part 3, "Immigrant Seniors," examines seniors' immigration to Canada. Six graphs illustrate the number of immigrant seniors by year of arrival; the top 10 countries-of-origin; the proportion of immigrant seniors by country-of-origin; the official language ability of immigrant seniors; and the gender distribution and marital status of immigrant seniors. Nineteen tables of statistical data are appended. (FMW)

- Abstract
In its capacity as an advisory body to the Canadian Minister of State for Multiculturalism, the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism prepared this report, written in English and French, in order to compare the government's policy of multiculturalism with its realization in practice. The work was conducted through five standing committees: Language and Cultural Development, Immigration Policy, Media, Human Rights and Humanitarian Concerns, and Grants. Part I summarizes findings and recommendations derived from a series of hearings and consultations held by the committees concerning the areas of language, education, immigration, communications, legal rights, and the government's role in fostering cultural pluralism. Part II presents evaluations of progress toward meeting recommendations made in a previous report. The following topics are addressed: retention of language and culture, human rights, cultural and multicultural community centers, the ethnic press and mass media, the arts, immigrants, attitudes of young people, and government administration. - Abstract
This booklet, written in English and French, describes the Canadian government's efforts to develop and implement a national policy of multiculturalism, historically and at the present time. A background section discusses government activities and committees established to promote cultural pluralism in the 1940s and 1950s. In the 1960s, the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism was established. A section of the booklet is devoted to recommendations made by the Commission and the government's response. A Minister of State for Multiculturalism was appointed in 1972 and the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism was established in 1973 as an advisory body to the Minister. A Multiculturalism Directorate was also founded to implement activities promoting multicultural policy. The activities of these groups are delineated in the third section of this booklet. The last two sections discuss the roles played by Federal cultural agencies, other government directorates, departments, and agencies in furthering the national policy. A statement in which Prime Minister Trudeau formally declared a national policy of multiculturalism is appended. (MK)

- Abstract
This resource unit, appropriate for advanced students of French as a second language or for native speakers of French in a bilingual context, has two main topics: (1) the city of New Orleans, and (2) formation and use of the present participle. The grammatical explanations, readings, and exercises are completely in French. The readings give the history of the city and a discussion of the culture of New Orleans in the form of a tour of "le Vieux Carre." Various types of composition exercises accompany the readings. Cultural notes on the "Vieux Carre," a unit outline including performance objectives, a bibliography, and a key to the grammatical exercises complete the unit. (AMH)

Utah State Board of Education, Salt Lake City.
- Abstract
These materials illustrate the ideas presented in the "Guide for Foreign Languages in Utah." Learning activities, materials, and evaluation procedures have been written to help the language teacher who has never had a methods course, as well as the experienced teacher who is searching for new ideas. The materials begin with a basic unit similar to those found in a methods textbook, but the main part of the unit is outlined with detailed instructions as to what the teacher must do to help the student develop the language skills described in the unit objectives. Model lessons in elementary, intermediate, and advanced placement French are presented as a means of illustrating practical applications of teaching goals and techniques outlined in the Utah curriculum. The lesson plans present the instructional objective, the lesson content, and the methodology as well as cross references to the course of study. In addition to the model lessons, a special resource section is included to help teachers prepare to teach an advanced placement class in French language or literature. (Author/JB)

- Abstract
This introductory French course guide is intended to be used by classroom teachers in the primary grades. The course and materials are designed for teachers who may not have had any background in the foreign language; the tapescript of each lesson is therefore highly structured. They are intended as an experiential or enrichment component of the primary grades curriculum and not as the beginning level of a foreign language sequence. The materials have been organized into four units (Introduction, Colors, Numbers, and Body/Clothing), and each unit is divided into lessons with two levels of material, one for kindergarten and the other for grades 1, 2, or 3. In addition to the teaching guidelines and tape scripts, visual and worksheet-type materials, which are suitable for duplication, are included in each unit. (Author/AMH)

- Abstract
Canada has become a multiracial, multireligious, and multicultural society, but non-whites, the "visible minorities (VMs)," face pay and employment discrimination in both the public and the private sector. Lack of statistical data by race and by region about job segregation, income levels, and promotions make it difficult to determine the extent of discrimination against any one group. However, a number of studies indicate that VMs are underrepresented in the workforce and are being denied full participation in public institutions. Affirmative action and contract compliance programs may provide a solution. The Employment Equity Act of 1986 promotes affirmative action at the federal level and applies to contractors supplying goods and services to the federal government. Voluntary affirmative action programs are legal in all Canadian jurisdictions, under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Supreme Courts of both Canada and the United States have upheld the validity of affirmative action programs in both countries. Studies in the United States indicate that contract compliance programs that incorporate affirmative action plans are effective in increasing the employment, occupational mobility, and earnings of minority groups. The Canadian federal contractors program, which shows promise of improving the employment opportunities of the VMs, is vigorously enforced by the Canada Employment Immigration Commission. Policy recommendations are made. A translation in French is included. A list of 59 references is appended. (FMW)

This graphic overview uses ten bar graphs to illustrate demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of Canada's visible minorities. Visible minorities are persons, other than aboriginal peoples, who are, because of their race or color, members of minority groups within the Canadian population. The following highlights are included: (1) the visible minority population exceeds 1.1 million out of a total population of 24.1 million; (2) visible minorities comprise almost 5 percent of the population; (3) the visible minority population is younger than the population as a whole; (4) visible minorities are more likely to attend college than other Canadians; (5) Chinese and Indo-Pakistani Canadians have a higher postsecondary education enrollment rate than other Canadians, but Blacks have a slightly lower enrollment rate; (6) the average income of visible minorities is marginally lower than that of the total population; (7) the average income of visible minorities is observably lower than that of the total population of the provinces with the highest proportions of visible minorities in the population; (8) visible minorities are underrepresented in high-salary jobs; (9) visible minorities are underrepresented in managerial positions; and (10) the percentage of self-employed individuals differed greatly among visible minority groups. A translation in French is included. A three-item bibliography and 10 tables of statistical data are appended. (FMW)

- Abstract
Written in French, this guide provides information to help parents of special needs children in New York become active partners in the planning and implementation of special education programs for their child. Part 1 of the guide provides in-depth information related to the special education process in New York public schools. A historical view of children's rights to an appropriate education and overviews of the regular and special education processes in New York are presented. A chart explains the seven steps of the special education process: (1) referral; (2) evaluation; (3) recommendation; (4) implementation; (5) planning conference; (6) annual review; and (7) triennial evaluation. Timelines required for the seven-step process are discussed. Information is also presented on due process, the procedures used to protect children's rights to a free appropriate public education, and preparing children for future education and employment opportunities. Part 2 of the guide serves as a practical handbook which complements Part 1 and provides specific suggestions for parent participation in an effective partnership with school personnel. Additionally, information is provided on frequently used acronyms (such as IEP--Individualized Education Program) and resources available through the Office for Education of Children with Handicapping Conditions (OECHC): early childhood directions centers, special education training and resource centers and regional offices. The OECHC's information checklist is also provided. (CB)

- Abstract
This document consists of both English and French versions of four reports which highlight the self-employment status of various ethnocultural groups in Canada. The first report introduces the publication by discussing the role of the small business sector and self-employment in Canada's economy as a whole. The importance of the ethnic groups to the economy is confirmed and statistics are presented demonstrating sex, immigrant status, regional, and ethnic differences in self-employment. The second report "British, French, and Other Groups in Selected Industries" focuses on seven industrial categories (mining, manufacturing, construction, transportation, trade, finance, and services). Self-employed people working in the seven categories are compared and contrasted for Canada as a whole and for the province of Ontario and the city of Toronto. The third report "Visible Minorities in Selected Industries" highlights the same geographical regions and uses eight industrial classifications (public administration added to the earlier seven). It examines the self-employment of persons in ethnic categories which are more "visible" as minorities, they are: (1) Blacks; (2) Far East Asians; (3) Indo-Pakistanis; (4) Pacific Islanders; (5) South East Asians; (6) West Asians and Arabs; and (7) Latin Americans. The fourth report "German, Italian, Jewish, Polish, Ukrainian, and Dutch Groups in Selected Industries," uses the same geographic breakdowns and the same eight industrial categories to highlight the self-employment status of groups with ethnic origins in Europe. The data for all of these reports were culled from census data with special attention to the question, "To which ethnic or cultural group did you or your ancestors belong on first coming to this continent?" - Abstract
The article inquires into the marked absence of aesthetic innovation in postwar German photography during the five years that followed the Second World War’s conclusion. Looking specifically at the genre known as Trümmerfotografie (rubble photography), it asks why this corpus of images was so conventional both in content and style, despite its shocking subject matter? The article suggests that after the horrors of fascism and war, psychological denial, a guilty conscious, and deep melancholy overtook German image making. As a consequence, the country’s increasingly thriving industry of illustrated periodicals and photobooks pursued tepid pictorial approaches that effectively sought to assuage and reconstruct the traumatized capacity of visual perception.

This document describes my main research activities, performed over the pas few years. It starts with a summarized historical overview of my activities and continues with detailed content on a selection of topics. The document starts with syntax driven approaches for service and network fingerprinting scheme, showing how parse trees of captured messages are serving to learn distinctive features capable to perform fingerprinting. We consider next the case of unknown protocols and propose an unsupervised learning method based on support vector clustering - SCV. The follow-up part of the document considers the behavioral fingerprinting, based on the analysis of temporal and state machine induced feature. We introduce the TR-FSM, a tree structured parametrized finite state machine having time annotated edges. A TR-FSM represents a fingerprint for device/stack. Several such fingerprints are associated with a device. We propose a supervised learning method, where support vector machines do use kernel functions defined over the space of TR-FSMs. We validated our approach using SIP as a target protocol. We address also the security monitoring of VoIP and present new monitoring approaches for VoIP specific environments. We address next the the practical outcomes of our fuzzing approach. We summarize the fuzzing architecture and give an overview on some of the most surprising vulnerabilities that we have found. We present a short positioning of our work with respect to relevant ongoing international activities in the sixth chapter.

It seems that attackers have already found a solution in the past by using the botnets which allow the parallel control several thousands of machines on internet. Therefore, a botnet based management solution can be scalable. This article aims to propose such a solution and evaluates the performances of the different types of botnets to compare them for a management solution.; Alors que le nombre d'équipements à superviser ne cesse de croître, le passage à l'échelle de la supervision des réseaux et services est un véritable enjeu.

The electrocardiogram, as much as the clinical examination, is a basic tool for the cardiologist. Technological advances have led to a certain lack of interest in learning to read the electrocardiogram, for which close analysis can allow precise diagnosis, notably in the field of cardiac rhythm disorders. This article concerns the electrocardiogram in ventricular tachycardias with two themes: differential diagnosis of wide QRS complex tachycardias and recognition of the site of origin of a ventricular tachycardia. "Fine" analysis of the electrocardiogram is not an intellectual "game". Actually, careful analysis of the 12 lead ECG allows exact and rapid diagnosis in a large majority of cases, distinguishing a ventricular tachycardia from a supraventricular tachycardia with conduction defect; the appropriate management can be selected without delay. At the same time, close reading of the electrocardiogram also allows the site of origin of a ventricular tachycardia to be recognised. Combining this information with elements of the patient's record can allow the arrhythmia to be related to a known pathology or to prompt a targeted aetiological investigation.
