The mosaic of plant stands in central Cameroon is home to nearly 100,000 sq. km of semi-deciduous moist, dense forests and grassy and shrubby savannahs. On the southern part of this area, at the confluence of Mbam and Sanaga rivers, we are witnessing a dynamic to the advantage of forests because of both natural and human factors. While the natural factors have already been well documented, the effects of the human activities need to be better studied. The present contribution has for objective to understand how the actions of peasant societies contribute to the construction of landscapes and particularly to the creation of forests in detriment of savannahs. It is question to determine the stages and mechanisms of this forest conquest which begins with the occurrence of groves and patches of forest in savannahs. The methodology uses botanical surveys and interviews with the population. Primarily linked to security, the concerns responsible for this landscape dynamics then became economic and now land-related. Originally planted and used around villages as a defensive hedge in the 19th century in the backdrop of tribal wars, the tree was thereafter used as firebreak and windbreak around houses and as support for agroforestry, for example by providing a shade for the cultivation of cocoa. It is also henceforth planted to signal the appropriation of a space. The combination of these factors leads to an afforestation of the savannah through groves surrounding huts, post-cultural groves and agroforestry groves.

The article analyses the conceptual foundations of Parmigianino in relation to his Hermetic and Neoplatonic ideas and alchemical practice, which were important in Renaissance Italian culture. Parmigianino's Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror is viewed as an embodiment of the artist as a demiurge, a creator of a brand new universe. The article highlights the symbolic and metaphysical significance of the convex mirror, reflecting the artist's creative power and the hidden values of reality. Melancholy, associated with Saturn, was a characteristic of artists and intellectuals in that cultural context. The article discusses Parmigianino’s frescos of Diana and Actaeon, a myth that symbolizes the pursuit of wisdom and the transformative process of the alchemist. Finally, it is also examined Parmigianino's potential interest in alchemy based on historical accounts. The controversy surrounding Parmigianino's involvement in alchemy is discussed, along with the opinions of various scholars

The present study addresses the issue of the transfer from second language acquisition (SLA) research to second and foreign language (L2) instruction, particularly within the context of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT). The main goal of this article is to show how technology, particularly the web-based tool taskGen (https://taskgen.eu), which primarily serves to create teaching materials, also functions as a mediator for transfer and provides valuable information on teaching practices, teachers' needs, pedagogical strategies, and L2 task design. This article is organised as follows. Firstly, a web-based tool that assists and trains teachers in L2 task design is presented, along with the instantiation and integration of natural language processing (NLP) resources in the tool; later, we show how quantitative information obtained from the massive use of the tool through data analytics can be combined with qualitative methods such as interviews, observations, think aloud protocols, questionnaires, case studies, and transcripts to generate research. Automatic (quantitative) data collection gathers information of the teaching contexts, task aims, task flow structures, focus on form options, and the access and time on help files. Not only does the collected information feed back to the tool, but it also contributes to understanding teachers' design choices and patterns, and to exploring the intersection between SLA and TBLT theory and task design practises. Qualitative analysis is being conducted and oriented toward teachers’ experiences during task design. Finally, we present the future lines of research that we anticipate will be carried out with the further use and development of taskGen.

Abstract Background Most genomic prediction applications in animal breeding use genotypes with tens of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). However, modern sequencing technologies and imputation algorithms can generate ultra-high-density genotypes (including millions of SNPs) at an affordable cost. Empirical studies have not produced clear evidence that using ultra-high-density genotypes can significantly improve prediction accuracy. However, (whole-genome) prediction accuracy is not very informative about the ability of a model to capture the genetic signals from specific genomic regions. To address this problem, we propose a simple methodology that detects chromosome regions for which a specific model (e.g., single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP)) may fail to fully capture the genetic signal present in such segments—a phenomenon that we refer to as signal leakage. We propose to detect regions with evidence of signal leakage by testing the association of residuals from a pedigree or a genomic model with SNP genotypes. We discuss how this approach can be used to map regions with signals that are poorly captured by a model and to identify strategies to fix those problems (e.g., using a different prior or increasing marker density). Finally, we explored the proposed approach to scan for signal leakage of different models (pedigree-based, ssGBLUP, and various Bayesian models) applied to growth-related phenotypes (average daily gain and backfat thickness) in pigs. Results We report widespread evidence of signal leakage for pedigree-based models. Including a percentage of animals with SNP data in ssGBLUP reduced the extent of signal leakage. However, local peaks of missed signals remained in some regions, even when all animals were genotyped. Using variable selection priors solves leakage points that are caused by excessive shrinkage of marker effects. Nevertheless, these models still miss signals in some regions due to low linkage disequilibrium between the SNPs on the array used and causal variants. Thus, we discuss how such problems could be addressed by adding sequence SNPs from those regions to the prediction model. Conclusions Residual single-marker regression analysis is a simple approach that can be used to detect regional genomic signals that are poorly captured by a model and to indicate ways to fix such problems.

This paper examines the emergence of Baudouin de Courtenay’s ideas about the mixture of languages as a reaction against the theories of Neogrammairians at the end of the 19th century. Born in Poland, which was then under Russian administration, he worked mostly at imperial Russian universities. He founded the so called Kazan Circle (1875-1883) where he elaborated the theory of phoneme. Anyway he was interested in a lot of other subjects. At the beginning of his career, he followed the neogrammarians theories, till he went to investigate the Slavonic islet of Resia in the Italian Frioul which gave him the materials of his monumental thesis Essay of Phonetics of the Dialects of Resia (1875) which he wrote under the influence of Graziado Ascoli. Baudouin thought there was a Turanian (Finno-Ugric and Turkic) substratum in theses dialects which so appeared to be a mixture of languages. He further shared the ideas of Hugo Schuchardt who affirmed that any language results to be a mixture and Nikolaj Marr about the hybridization of all languages in the world. So, could Baudouin give rise to a lot of studies dedicated to linguistic contacts, exchanges and mixtures of languages.

Abstract Background Whole-genome sequence (WGS) data harbor causative variants that may not be present in standard single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip data. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of using preselected variants from WGS for single-step genomic predictions in maternal and terminal pig lines with up to 1.8k sequenced and 104k sequence imputed animals per line. Methods Two maternal and four terminal lines were investigated for eight and seven traits, respectively. The number of sequenced animals ranged from 1365 to 1491 for the maternal lines and 381 to 1865 for the terminal lines. Imputation to sequence occurred within each line for 66k to 76k animals for the maternal lines and 29k to 104k animals for the terminal lines. Two preselected SNP sets were generated based on a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Top40k included the SNPs with the lowest p-value in each of the 40k genomic windows, and ChipPlusSign included significant variants integrated into the porcine SNP chip used for routine genotyping. We compared the performance of single-step genomic predictions between using preselected SNP sets assuming equal or different variances and the standard porcine SNP chip. Results In the maternal lines, ChipPlusSign and Top40k showed an average increase in accuracy of 0.6 and 4.9%, respectively, compared to the regular porcine SNP chip. The greatest increase was obtained with Top40k, particularly for fertility traits, for which the initial accuracy based on the standard SNP chip was low. However, in the terminal lines, Top40k resulted in an average loss of accuracy of 1%. ChipPlusSign provided a positive, although small, gain in accuracy (0.9%). Assigning different variances for the SNPs slightly improved accuracies when using variances obtained from BayesR. However, increases were inconsistent across the lines and traits. Conclusions The benefit of using sequence data depends on the line, the size of the genotyped population, and how the WGS variants are preselected. When WGS data are available on hundreds of thousands of animals, using sequence data presents an advantage but this remains limited in pigs.

A sol-gel process for the synthesis of a multi-component oxide material from the system SiO2-ZrO2-Al2O3underwent optimization and up-scaling. Initially, on a laboratory scale, components including precursors, catalysts, and additives were methodically evaluated to ensure a safe and efficient transition to larger volumes. Subsequently, the equipment for the whole setup of the sol-gel process was strategically selected. Leveraging insights from these optimizations, the process was successfully scaled-up to pilot-scale operation, conducting hydrolysis, condensation reactions, gelation, aging, and drying within a single, integrated conical dryer system for an 80 L batch. A visual test and FTIR spectroscopy were applied for process control and monitoring.

Implication Statement Addressing patient safety incidents is a complicated and challenging issue for physicians. At present, there is little training in residency programs to help prepare learners to tackle situations where harm arises as a result of healthcare delivery. In response to new accreditation mandates, we piloted a flipped classroom patient safety curriculum to help train family medicine residents to identify and address patient safety incidents in practice. Family medicine programs could consider similar case-based training for their learners to help prepare them to respond to these events and address contributory factors.

Science - Abstract
The RO drilling is located in the Ivorian Onshore Basin in the Aboisso area. To find a suitable area to meet the potable [kj1] water needs of Abidjan city, litho-granulometric and log analyzes were carried out on forty-three (43) samples, to understand the sedimentary cyclicities in the establishment of hydraulic reservoirs (aquifers) along the borehole. The lithological results reveal six (6) lithologies which are among others sandy gravels, gravelly sands, kaolins, quartz sands, sandy-muddy gravel, and silty-clayey sand, which alternate all along drilling. These different alternations allowed the establishment of 42 lithological cycles, of which 35 were binary cycles, 6 ternary cycles, and a single quaternary cycle. The grain size results show that the sand fractions of these lithologies are coarse to very coarse, moderately graded to poorly graded, Platikurtic [kj2], with negative to positive asymmetries. Through these granulometric parameter arrangements, 23 cycles of grain size, 30 cycles of classification, 27 cycles of asymmetry, and 9 cycles of kurtosity were counted. The log signatures show 12 cylindrical shapes, 4 bell shapes, 3 jagged shapes, 3 egg shapes, and one funnel shape giving a total of 23 cycles. They indicate the existence of anastomosing and meandering fluvial systems.

Educators around the world know well how stressful it was to be suddenly forced to migrate their courses online during the COVID-19 pandemic. This episode of the Forced Change podcast explores how Canadian journalism instructors teaching radio, television and multimedia courses at post-secondary institutions adapted to moving to virtual environments from in-person environments, which often rely on replicating elements of physically collaborative newsrooms. An academically diverse panel of educators from Carleton University, Concordia University, and Toronto Metropolitan University discuss their initial difficulties in adjusting to the circumstances, how they simulated studio environments while working remotely, shifting their pedagogical approaches and uses of digital tools, and managing student mental health. The episode serves as both a record of how we managed things in the past as well as a roadmap for how we might approach another pandemic.

Abstract Background Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) aim at identifying genomic regions involved in phenotype expression, but identifying causative variants is difficult. Pig Combined Annotation Dependent Depletion (pCADD) scores provide a measure of the predicted consequences of genetic variants. Incorporating pCADD into the GWAS pipeline may help their identification. Our objective was to identify genomic regions associated with loin depth and muscle pH, and identify regions of interest for fine-mapping and further experimental work. Genotypes for ~ 40,000 single nucleotide morphisms (SNPs) were used to perform GWAS for these two traits, using de-regressed breeding values (dEBV) for 329,964 pigs from four commercial lines. Imputed sequence data was used to identify SNPs in strong ( $$\ge$$ ≥ 0.80) linkage disequilibrium with lead GWAS SNPs with the highest pCADD scores. Results Fifteen distinct regions were associated with loin depth and one with loin pH at genome-wide significance. Regions on chromosomes 1, 2, 5, 7, and 16, explained between 0.06 and 3.55% of the additive genetic variance and were strongly associated with loin depth. Only a small part of the additive genetic variance in muscle pH was attributed to SNPs. The results of our pCADD analysis suggests that high-scoring pCADD variants are enriched for missense mutations. Two close but distinct regions on SSC1 were associated with loin depth, and pCADD identified the previously identified missense variant within the MC4R gene for one of the lines. For loin pH, pCADD identified a synonymous variant in the RNF25 gene (SSC15) as the most likely candidate for the muscle pH association. The missense mutation in the PRKAG3 gene known to affect glycogen content was not prioritised by pCADD for loin pH. Conclusions For loin depth, we identified several strong candidate regions for further statistical fine-mapping that are supported in the literature, and two novel regions. For loin muscle pH, we identified one previously identified associated region. We found mixed evidence for the utility of pCADD as an extension of heuristic fine-mapping. The next step is to perform more sophisticated fine-mapping and expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) analysis, and then interrogate candidate variants in vitro by perturbation-CRISPR assays.

This paper aims at critically reviewing the concept of rentierism and the Rentier State coined after the oil shocks of the 1970s. It explains that it is the result of a relationship, which properly institutionalized through the market generates a mineral rent. This allows us to argue that the oil price fulfils a systemic role. Finally, this paper assesses the case of Algeria by examining its positioning in the hydrocarbon global value chains, with the aim to draw the conclusions that the future of Algeria as a gas rentier economy is quite unclear, but in the case of a major restructuring of the international gas trade, it could lead to its petrolization.

Anton Nilsson (1887–1989) is one of the most famous people in the Swedish labour movement and a prominent activist with the status of an icon. He was a member of the Young Socialist movement in the working-class city of Malmö, he placed a bomb on the ship Amalthea, which housed 73 English strike breakers, in connection with an extensive dock worker conflict in the Swedish ports. Anton Nilsson was sentenced to death in a subsequent trial, but after extensive protests, also abroad, the death sentence was converted to life imprisonment. Following the “potato revolution” and as the first Social Democratic / Liberal government was elected, he was granted an amnesty in 1917 and released from captivity. On Midsummer's Eve 1919, Anton Nilsson took an international flight certificate and went to the young Soviet state to become a pilot in the Red Army. He remained an agitator throughout his life and participated as a centenarian in the First of May demonstration in Stockholm, where he then lived and later was also buried.

Abstract Background Early simulations indicated that whole-genome sequence data (WGS) could improve the accuracy of genomic predictions within and across breeds. However, empirical results have been ambiguous so far. Large datasets that capture most of the genomic diversity in a population must be assembled so that allele substitution effects are estimated with high accuracy. The objectives of this study were to use a large pig dataset from seven intensely selected lines to assess the benefits of using WGS for genomic prediction compared to using commercial marker arrays and to identify scenarios in which WGS provides the largest advantage. Methods We sequenced 6931 individuals from seven commercial pig lines with different numerical sizes. Genotypes of 32.8 million variants were imputed for 396,100 individuals (17,224 to 104,661 per line). We used BayesR to perform genomic prediction for eight complex traits. Genomic predictions were performed using either data from a standard marker array or variants preselected from WGS based on association tests. Results The accuracies of genomic predictions based on preselected WGS variants were not robust across traits and lines and the improvements in prediction accuracy that we achieved so far with WGS compared to standard marker arrays were generally small. The most favourable results for WGS were obtained when the largest training sets were available and standard marker arrays were augmented with preselected variants with statistically significant associations to the trait. With this method and training sets of around 80k individuals, the accuracy of within-line genomic predictions was on average improved by 0.025. With multi-line training sets, improvements of 0.04 compared to marker arrays could be expected. Conclusions Our results showed that WGS has limited potential to improve the accuracy of genomic predictions compared to marker arrays in intensely selected pig lines. Thus, although we expect that larger improvements in accuracy from the use of WGS are possible with a combination of larger training sets and optimised pipelines for generating and analysing such datasets, the use of WGS in the current implementations of genomic prediction should be carefully evaluated against the cost of large-scale WGS data on a case-by-case basis.

Objective: The purpose of this article is to investigate the existence of anti-discrimination duties in the case management involving indigenous peoples, based on the Code of Civil Procedure. Therefore, the hypothesis presented is that, in addition to the substantive law rules, procedural rules must also respect anti-discrimination duties. Methodology: As a methodology, a qualitative approach is adopted, through a review of specialized literature and legislation. Results: It’s concluded that Brazilian civil procedural law, by adopting the case management in cooperation with the parties, also adds anti-discrimination duties to the procedural norms, allowing the adaptation of the process to the specificities of indigenous peoples, expressing the commandment of equality provided for in the Constitution and emphasizing ethnic discrimination as a prohibited criterion of anti-discrimination law. Contributions: The article contributes to the reflection that anti-discrimination duties, in addition to material norms, also reach the procedural norm and that case management (intra-procedural) is an important instrument to guarantee procedural equality for indigenous peoples.

Abstract Background There is a growing interest to decipher the genetic background of resilience and its possible improvement through selective breeding. The objective of the present study was to provide new insights into the genetic make-up of resilience in growing pigs by identifying genomic regions and candidate genes associated with resilience indicators. Commercial Duroc pigs were challenged with an attenuated Aujeszky vaccine at 12 weeks of age. Two resilience indicators were used: deviation from the expected body weight at 16 weeks of age given the growth curve of non-vaccinated pigs (∆BW) and the increase in acute-phase protein haptoglobin at four days post-vaccination (∆HP). Genome-wide association analyses were carried out on 445 pigs, using genotypes at 41,165 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and single-marker and Bayesian multiple-marker regression approaches. Results Genomic regions on pig chromosomes 2, 8, 9, 11 (∆BW) and 8, 9, 13 (∆HP) were found to be associated with the resilience indicators and explained high proportions of their genetic variance. The genomic regions that were associated explained 27 and 5% of the genetic variance of ∆BW and ∆HP, respectively. These genomic regions harbour promising candidate genes that are involved in pathways related to immune response, response to stress, or signal transduction (CD6, PTGDR2, IKZF1, RNASEL and MYD88), and growth (GRB10 and LCORL). Conclusions Our study identified novel genomic regions that are associated with two resilience indicators (∆BW and ∆HP) in pigs. These associated genomic regions harbour potential candidate genes involved in immune response and growth pathways, which emphasise the strong relationship between resilience and immune response.

Flow chemistry is a growing and promising technology that can be used in research, development, and production. Nowadays, properly trained staff in flow chemistry is lacking in industry. To efficiently work with this technology, a mix of engineering and chemical skills is required. Although, this dual education is well addressed in the chemistry major given at the Haute Ecole d’Ingénierie et d’Architecture de Fribourg, a school of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Western Switzerland, the teaching in flow chemistry should be enhanced and reinforced.

Abstract Background It is expected that functional, mainly missense and loss-of-function (LOF), and regulatory variants are responsible for most phenotypic differences between breeds and genetic lines of livestock species that have undergone diverse selection histories. However, there is still limited knowledge about the existing missense and LOF variation in commercial livestock populations, in particular regarding population-specific variation and how it can affect applications such as across-breed genomic prediction. Methods We re-sequenced the whole genome of 7848 individuals from nine commercial pig lines (average sequencing coverage: 4.1×) and imputed whole-genome genotypes for 440,610 pedigree-related individuals. The called variants were categorized according to predicted functional annotation (from LOF to intergenic) and prevalence level (number of lines in which the variant segregated; from private to widespread). Variants in each category were examined in terms of their distribution along the genome, alternative allele frequency, per-site Wright’s fixation index (FST), individual load, and association to production traits. Results Of the 46 million called variants, 28% were private (called in only one line) and 21% were widespread (called in all nine lines). Genomic regions with a low recombination rate were enriched with private variants. Low-prevalence variants (called in one or a few lines only) were enriched for lower allele frequencies, lower FST, and putatively functional and regulatory roles (including LOF and deleterious missense variants). On average, individuals carried fewer private deleterious missense alleles than expected compared to alleles with other predicted consequences. Only a small subset of the low-prevalence variants had intermediate allele frequencies and explained small fractions of phenotypic variance (up to 3.2%) of production traits. The significant low-prevalence variants had higher per-site FST than the non-significant ones. These associated low-prevalence variants were tagged by other more widespread variants in high linkage disequilibrium, including intergenic variants. Conclusions Most low-prevalence variants have low minor allele frequencies and only a small subset of low-prevalence variants contributed detectable fractions of phenotypic variance of production traits. Accounting for low-prevalence variants is therefore unlikely to noticeably benefit across-breed analyses, such as the prediction of genomic breeding values in a population using reference populations of a different genetic background.

The present work concern the distribution of epiphytic Pteridophytes and their relationship with phorophytes in the mountain zone of the Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP) in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We conducted 10 transects and 20 plots on an altitudinal gradient from 1712 to 3326 meters of altitude. The inventories were made following the pattern of epiphyte distribution on phorophytes according to the method of Johansson (1974). The smallest area necessary for most species to be represented in the survey was 200 centimeters around the trunk of the phorophyte. Pteridophyte diversity indices were measured as well as the relationships between floristic variation of pteridophytes and ecological variation using principal component analysis (PCA). The 63 epiphytic Pteridophytes were recorded out of 842 phorophytes belonging to 20 species. Hemi-epiphytes (34.9%) followed by semi-strict epiphytes (25.4%) are predominant in the montane forest (1700-2600 meters of altitude) while semi-strict epiphytes dominated in the afro-subalpine forest (17.5%). The montane forest records a large number of epiphytic Pteridophytes with a sequence of I > II > III > IV > V, while the afro-subalpine forest shows a sequence of I > II > III according to the Johansson scale. Phorophyte diameter and environmental conditions are two main factors that influence epiphyte abundance. In addition, the nature of the bark of trees has a strong influence on the relationship between Pteridophytes epiphytes and phorophytes.
