1. Ethnographic Perspectives to Teaching and Learning in Multilingual Contexts

Abstract

This special issue addresses the organization of teaching and learning in a variety of multilingual schooling contexts from different critical ethnographic perspectives (i.e.: critical sociolinguistic ethnography, linguistic anthropology, and language socialization). By analyzing a range of educational settings in Spain, the U.S., the U.K., Argentina, and Guatemala, the articles establish a dialogue with different ethnographically-oriented studies to understand the relationship between situated communicative practices, language policies, language ideologies, dominant discourses about bi-multilingualism, and wider social, cultural and economic processes.

2. Language Socialization and CLIL Teachers’ Agency in Castilla-La Mancha Bilingual Programs: Appropriations and Transformations

Abstract

Language socialization research in bilingual and multilingual settings, particularly across EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and ESL (English as a Second Language) contexts, has addressed the processes by which novices are «apprenticed» or mentored into the linguistic and nonlinguistic ideologies, values, practices, and stances (affective, epistemic, and other) of sociocultural groups to ultimately become «competent members» of these learning communities. However, one of the unexplored bilingual education contexts from a language socialization perspective refers to «Content and Language Integrated Learning» or CLIL, defined as «inclusive of a wide range of educational practices provided that these practices are conducted through the medium of an additional language and both language and the subject have a joint role». Taking these premises as a point of departure, this article discusses the language socialization processes CLIL teachers undergo to become competent members of the bilingual school communities (BSC) that have proliferated extensively in Castilla-La Mancha (CLM), Spain, in the last decade. Drawing on ethnographic data collected in four different bilingual state-funded and state-funded private schools in this region, the article analyzes the case of San Marcos’ teachers’ narratives of becoming and doing CLIL as «meta-agentive» discursive sites that display the ideologies and practices of professional personhood at stake in CLIL programs. The article further advances the latest ethnographic CLIL agenda interested in revealing the social processes involved in the organization of exclusionary practices in the era of the «bilingual» craze and pressure across different Spanish autonomous communities

3. Competing Bilingual Schools in La Mancha City: Teachers’ Responses to Neoliberal Language Policy and CLIL Practices

Abstract

This article analyzes how neoliberalism as ideology and practice permeates CLIL-type bilingual education teachers’ narratives collected as part of the sociolinguistic ethnography conducted in four Spanish-English bilingual schools in La Mancha City (pseudonym). The rapid implementation of Spanish-English bilingual programs in Castilla-La Mancha schools in the last decade (e.g. «MEC/British» programs; «Linguistic Programs» regulated by the regional «Plan of Plurilingualism», last amended in 2018; «Bilingual Programs» in semi-private schools) invites to reflect on how neoliberalism plays a role in the commodification of English language teaching and learning in these programs. Particularly, the article discusses how teachers participating in these programs position themselves towards their personal experiences teaching CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) subjects in these bilingual programs. The analysis shows how these teachers are appropriating and resisting in some cases bilingualism as a neoliberal ideology and practice that reconfigures their professional identities as self-governing free subjects who must know English at all costs to compete in the highly commodified global market of English.

Abstract

International audience; The use of dental stem cells has raised many hopes in the development of new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. According to current statistics, about 1 in 6 people in the world would be affected by a neurological disease. This number continues to increase as the world's population ages, making neurodegenerative diseases probably the one of the major challenges of public health in the 21st century. Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized mainly by a progressive loss of cognitive abilities and patient autonomy related to loss and degeneration of neurons in brain structures. Unfortunately, today, the only treatments available for this type of disease do only relieve the symptoms, they do not treat them, and few clinical trials have been truly convincing to date. Hence, hope lies for these diseases in the development of other therapeutic approaches. As such, dental stem cells could be a promising area of research because of their rapid growth, their great capacity for differentiation into different types of cells (among neuronal ones for some of them) and how easy they can be obtained, without raising ethical issues as for example for embryonic stem cells.; L’utilisation des cellules souches dentaires a fait naître de nombreux espoirs dans le développement de nouveaux traitements destinés aux maladies neurodégénératives. Si l’on se réfère aux statistiques actuelles, environ 1 personne sur 6 dans le monde serait atteinte par une maladie neurologique. Ce nombre ne cesse d’augmenter au fur et à mesure que la population mondiale vieillit, faisant des maladies neurodégénératives probablement l’un des principaux défis de la santé publique du XXIe siècle. Les maladies neurodégénératives se caractérisent principalement par une perte progressive des facultés cognitives et de l’autonomie des patients liée à une perte et une dégénérescence des neurones des structures cérébrales. Malheureusement, force est de constater que les seuls traitements disponibles actuellement pour ce type de pathologies ne font que soulager les symptômes et non les traiter et que peu d’essais cliniques à ce jour ont été véritablement probants. L’espoir réside donc pour ces maladies neurodégénératives dans le développement de nouvelles approches thérapeutiques. Les cellules souches dentaires pourraient constituer une nouvelle voie de recherche en thérapie cellulaire, de par leur croissance rapide, leur grande capacité de différenciation en différents types cellulaires (y compris en cellules neuronales pour certaines) et la facilité avec laquelle elles peuvent être obtenues sans soulever de problèmes d’éthique comme par exemple pour les cellules souches embryonnaires.

Abstract

El artículo estudia el papel que desempeñan las empresas innovadoras de Andalucía en el mercado tecnológico y reconoce si éstas siguen una Estrategia Tecnológica como instrumento que marca los objetivos y directrices a seguir en relación al uso de la tecnología. Se ha realizado un proceso de encuestación a 201 empresas innovadoras andaluzas que compran y/o venden tecnología a cuyos datos se ha aplicado un método mixto de análisis clúster. Se han identificado seis tipos de empresas en función de su posición en el mercado, de los rasgos sectoriales y territoriales, del alcance geográfico de las relaciones y de la dotación de habilidades, capacidades y recursos internos para la innovación. Predominan las relaciones de compra de tecnología en el exterior de Andalucía mientras que la venta, de alcance regional, es aún muy reducida.
