Abstract Background High resistance (the ability of the host to reduce pathogen load) and tolerance (the ability to maintain high performance at a given pathogen load) are two desirable host traits for producing animals that are resilient to infections. For Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), one of the most devastating swine diseases worldwide, studies have identified substantial genetic variation in resistance of pigs, but evidence for genetic variation in tolerance has so far been inconclusive. Resistance and tolerance are usually considered as static traits. In this study, we used longitudinal viremia measurements of PRRS virus infected pigs to define discrete stages of infection based on viremia profile characteristics. These were used to investigate host genetic effects on viral load (VL) and growth at different stages of infection, to quantify genetic variation in tolerance at these stages and throughout the entire 42-day observation period, and to assess whether the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) WUR10000125 (WUR) with known large effects on resistance confers significant differences in tolerance. Results Genetic correlations between resistance and growth changed considerably over time. Individuals that expressed high genetic resistance early in infection tended to grow slower during that time-period, but were more likely to experience lower VL and recovery in growth by the later stage. The WUR genotype was most strongly associated with VL at early- to mid-stages of infection, and with growth at mid- to late-stages of infection. Both, single-stage and repeated measurements random regression models identified significant genetic variation in tolerance. The WUR SNP was significantly associated only with the overall tolerance slope fitted through all stages of infection, with the genetically more resistant AB pigs for the WUR SNP being also more tolerant to PRRS. Conclusions The results suggest that genetic selection for improved tolerance of pigs to PRRS is possible in principle, but may be feasible only with genomic selection, requiring intense recording schemes that involve repeated measurements to reliably estimate genetic effects. In the absence of such records, consideration of the WUR genotype in current selection schemes appears to be a promising strategy to improve simultaneously resistance and tolerance of growing pigs to PRRS.

Abstract Background Genomic prediction of the pig’s response to the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus (PRRSV) would be a useful tool in the swine industry. This study investigated the accuracy of genomic prediction based on porcine SNP60 Beadchip data using training and validation datasets from populations with different genetic backgrounds that were challenged with different PRRSV isolates. Results Genomic prediction accuracy averaged 0.34 for viral load (VL) and 0.23 for weight gain (WG) following experimental PRRSV challenge, which demonstrates that genomic selection could be used to improve response to PRRSV infection. Training on WG data during infection with a less virulent PRRSV, KS06, resulted in poor accuracy of prediction for WG during infection with a more virulent PRRSV, NVSL. Inclusion of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are in linkage disequilibrium with a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 4 was vital for accurate prediction of VL. Overall, SNPs that were significantly associated with either trait in single SNP genome-wide association analysis were unable to predict the phenotypes with an accuracy as high as that obtained by using all genotyped SNPs across the genome. Inclusion of data from close relatives into the training population increased whole genome prediction accuracy by 33% for VL and by 37% for WG but did not affect the accuracy of prediction when using only SNPs in the major QTL region. Conclusions Results show that genomic prediction of response to PRRSV infection is moderately accurate and, when using all SNPs on the porcine SNP60 Beadchip, is not very sensitive to differences in virulence of the PRRSV in training and validation populations. Including close relatives in the training population increased prediction accuracy when using the whole genome or SNPs other than those near a major QTL.

Abstract Background A host can adopt two response strategies to infection: resistance (reduce pathogen load) and tolerance (minimize impact of infection on performance). Both strategies may be under genetic control and could thus be targeted for genetic improvement. Although there is evidence that supports a genetic basis for resistance to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), it is not known whether pigs also differ genetically in tolerance. We determined to what extent pigs that have been shown to vary genetically in resistance to PRRS also exhibit genetic variation in tolerance. Multi-trait linear mixed models and random regression sire models were fitted to PRRS Host Genetics Consortium data from 1320 weaned pigs (offspring of 54 sires) that were experimentally infected with a virulent strain of PRRS virus to obtain genetic parameter estimates for resistance and tolerance. Resistance was defined as the inverse of within-host viral load (VL) from 0 to 21 (VL21) or 0 to 42 (VL42) days post-infection and tolerance as the slope of the reaction-norm of average daily gain (ADG21, ADG42) on VL21 or VL42. Results Multi-trait analysis of ADG associated with either low or high VL was not indicative of genetic variation in tolerance. Similarly, random regression models for ADG21 and ADG42 with a tolerance slope fitted for each sire did not result in a better fit to the data than a model without genetic variation in tolerance. However, the distribution of data around average VL suggested possible confounding between level and slope estimates of the regression lines. Augmenting the data with simulated growth rates of non-infected half-sibs (ADG0) helped resolve this statistical confounding and indicated that genetic variation in tolerance to PRRS may exist if genetic correlations between ADG0 and ADG21 or ADG42 are low to moderate. Conclusions Evidence for genetic variation in tolerance of pigs to PRRS was weak when based on data from infected piglets only. However, simulations indicated that genetic variance in tolerance may exist and could be detected if comparable data on uninfected relatives were available. In conclusion, of the two defense strategies, genetics of tolerance is more difficult to elucidate than genetics of resistance.

Nous nous proposons dans cet article d’analyser la place occupée par la littérature française contemporaine dans cette méthode. Après un constat sur la pénurie de textes contemporains, nous tentons d’en détecter les causes et les conséquences sur l’apprentissage des étudiants chinois afin d’ouvrir des perspectives sur le devenir de cette méthode de français.

Le mélange des registres de langue est un phénomène courant noté chez les apprenants de français. Dans l’étude présente, le concept de registre sera défini, la classification sera éclairée, des problèmes de registre seront relevés et analysés, des raisons possibles pour le trouble seront recherchées et des conseils concernant l’enseignement des registres seront prodigués.

At this time of change in the linguistic paradigm in which the logic of a single language is being abandoned in favour of diversity, the role of French has had to take on a new dimension, especially considering the worrying international situation. Spoken on all five continents by more French-speakers than those living in France itself, French has become the language of negotiation, of exchange, of intercultural understanding – and this, moreover, to its own greater enrichment. The consequences for language-teaching are important, both for teacher-training and for classroom activities. The notion of “French” culture must be revised and the intercultural dialogue exploited in order, above all, to develop a critical mind and enrich ways of thinking.

The site exchange processes of carbonyl ligands in homo- and hetero-metallic dodecacarbonyls of Ir and Rh and their derivatives take place by bridge opening and closing of CO's involving three or four metal atoms, and by rotation of terminal CO's about the apical metal centre. Substitution of Ir by Rh in the basal face of the metal framework slows down the first two processes and accelerates the third one, reflecting a significantly more electropositive character of Ir relative to Rh.

Introduction: Tele-expertise in dermatology represents an opportunity to change medical practice in response to the need for cost savings in the health sector. The aim of this study was to evaluate the medical activities of the pilot phase of the tele-expertise project in Togo., Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in October 2020 on the 20 sites of the pilot phase. This evaluation consisted of a literature review and analysis of data posted on the tele-expertise platform., Results: A total of 738 (10.8%) of the 6810 dermatological consultations were posted on the tele-expertise platform. Of the 738 cases, the dermatologist’s expertise did not allow a diagnosis to be made in 119 cases (16.1%). This expertise confirmed the single clinical hypothesis proposed by the health worker in 275 cases (37.3%) and allowed a diagnosis to be made among several clinical hypotheses in 30 cases (4.1%). On the contrary, the dermatologist’s diagnosis was not included in the health worker’s hypotheses in 201 cases (27.2%), and no clinical hypothesis was formulated in 113 cases (15.3%). The concordance between the clinical hypothesis proposed by the health worker and the diagnosis of the dermatologist was 48.8%. Regarding the acceptability of the tele-expertise, only one refusal was recorded. All patients were very satisfied with this practice., Conclusions: The results show the feasibility and acceptability of tele-expertise by health care personnel and patients. The diagnostic concordance of 48.8% shows the relative efficiency of task delegation.

Symptoms of vertigo and dizziness may arise from a dysfunction of the vestibular system in the inner ear but many or even most of them don't. The medical interrogatory is a key step for the diagnosis, combined with functional tests. Around 10 % of patients with vertigo are referred to specialists. They are a lot of psychogenic dizzy symptoms. The importance of a reassuring dialogue with the patient is of prime importance to avoid the development of functional or psychological imbalance.

The COVID-19 pandemic occurred in the context of a dramatic decline in support for biological and health research in France. An analysis of resources allocated to this sector shows that the credits in 2020 correspond to only 17.2 % of the total credits allocated to research, the lowest ratio inat least 15 years. Another weakness in the system of support for hospital research is the way funds from the health insurance system are allocated. To bring it into line with international best practices, the task of allocating these funds should be entrusted to a "Hospital Research Orientation Council", which should also be involved in the implementation of national research programming. Helicobacter pylori infection in children. Clinical manifestations are not specific in the course of H. pylori infection in children and in most cases the infection is asymptomatic. The initial diagnosis is based on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsy-based methods (culture, PCR, histology and rapid urease test). Treatment should be based on the results of the antibiotic (particularly clarithromycin) susceptibility testing of the isolated strains (antibiogram and/or PCR) with a good therapeutic adherence more than 90%. Advanced glycation products are proteins whose structural and functional properties have been modified by a process of oxidative glycation. The accumulation of advanced glycation products in most tissues and the oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions that accompany it, account for the multi-systemic impairment observed particularly in the elderly, diabetics and in chronic renal failure. The advanced glycation products endogenous production is continuous, related to oxidative stress, but the most important source of advanced glycation products is exogenous, mainly of food origin. Exogenous advanced glycation products are developed during the preparation of food and beverages. The advanced glycation products content is higher for animal foods, but it is mainly the preparation and cooking methods that play a decisive role. Dietary advice is based on the selection of foods and the choice of methods of preparation. Several randomized controlled studies have confirmed the favorable effect of these recommendations on serum advanced glycation products concentrations. In humans, as in animals, regular physical activity also results in a reduction of serum and tissue concentrations of advanced glycation products. Metabolic acidosis is a frequent complication of chronic kidney disease. Although it is known to appear at advanced stages, many studies suggest a state of "global protonic retention" starting at early stages of the disease, responsible of tissue damage, particularly musculoskeletal, alteration of protidic metabolism and endocrine disorders, promoting malnutrition and chronic inflammation, and finally increasing mortality. The majority of international recommandations suggest of supplementation by alkali, most of the time by sodium bicarbonate, to struggle against this complication. An interesting alternative to correct acidosis would consist on the modulation of the endogenous production of acid by playing with the alimentary incomes. In fact, it has been demonstrated that some different types of food produce or consume protons during their metabolism. Low protein diet and rich fresh fruits and vegetables diet would manage to correct at least as well as the supplementation by sodium bicarbonate the metabolic acidosis, and to struggle against its complications, noteworthy by slowing the decline of glomerular filtration rate by limiting the toxic adaptative fibrotic mechanisms, demonstrated by the decrease of urinary tubulo-interstitial suffering markers. Of the condition of being well led, those diets do not seem to expose patients to an over-risk of malnutrition or hyperkaliemia. They therefore appear to be an attractive alternative, efficiency and safe, to fight against chronic kidney disease metabolic acidosis and its complications., (Copyright © 2019. A fifty-one years-old patient with a history of rheumatoid arthritis of recent diagnosis is hospitalized for exploration of a rapidly progressive anasarca state. First analysis discovered an impure nephrotic syndrome (acute renal failure, hematuria) and massive glomerular proteinuria. Auto-medication by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug was revealed. Renal biopsy showed minimal glomerular disease and acute tubular necrosis. Corticosteroid use permitted a normalization of proteinuria and renal recovery was obtained. Literature review showed renal impairment occurring in rheumatoid polyarthritis. Minimal glomerular disease is rare but can be associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Psychedelic drugs, often referred to as hallucinogens, are quite distinct from other classes of psychotropic drugs. Although the subjective and behavioral effects they induce are quite dramatic, they possess little addictive potential when compared to nicotine, alcohol or opiates. Since the discovery of ketamine antidepressant effects, there has been growing interest for these molecules. Serotonergic psychedelics such as psilocybin and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) are gaining attention as potential treatments for depression and addiction, similarly to 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and ibogaine for addiction. Although they possess distinct pharmacological profiles, their kinetics of action are quite similar: the therapeutic effects are felt within the hours following administration, and last well beyond drug elimination by the organism. This strongly suggests the induction of neurogenic and plastic mechanisms, including the involvement of trophic factors. This review will explore the literature dealing with the effects of psychedelics on neurotrophins, as well as the plastic adaptations that they induce, in an attempt to understand their surprising therapeutic potential. We will show that although ketamine and serotonergic psychedelics have affinity for very different receptors (NMDA, 5-HT2A), they ultimately initiate similar plastic adaptations in the prefrontal cortex through the involvement of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). We will see that although MDMA uses the same receptors as serotonergic psychedelics to alleviate PTSD symptoms, its effect on BDNF levels seem paradoxical and quite different. Finally, we show how ibogaine could exert its anti-addictive properties through a completely different neurotrophic factor than other psychedelic drugs, the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). While the current literature concerning the psychiatric applications of psychedelic therapy is encouraging, it remains to be determined whether their benefits could be obtained without their psychotomimetic effects, or concerns over potential toxicity., (© Société de Biologie, 2019.)
