Dès le XVIIIe siècle, le tourisme littoral expérimente en Grande-Bretagne des formes architecturales qui vont servir de référence, en particulier la jetée de plaisir qui permet des activités variées (promenade, pêche, danse, théâtre, restau­rant, attractions…). Au XIXe siècle, ces lieux de loisirs populaires connaissent une diffusion géographique rapide grâce notamment au chemin de fer et à l’émergence d’importants foyers de population. Très sensibles aux tempêtes, aux incendies, aux collisions et aux guerres, ces espaces du quotidien ont subi, surtout vis-à-vis de destinations lointaines désormais accessibles par avion, une forte désaffection à partir des années 1980. Néanmoins, face aux menaces de démolition, des résis­tances animées d’une forme de patriotisme local s’organisent bien aidées par la patrimonialisation des jetées et l’apport financier de la National Lottery. Depuis la fin des années 1990, un mouvement de régénération des stations balnéaires britanniques s’est enclenché qui, entre autres, misent alternativement sur l’authen­­ticité ou la réinterprétation moderne de leurs jetées. Finalement, la fierté populaire affichée lors de la réouverture après travaux par les résidents et les touristes montre que le sentiment d’appartenance à une pratique populaire du bord de mer britannique reste profondément ancré Since the 18th century, coastal tourism in Great Britain has experienced architectural forms that will serve as reference. During the 19th century, these popular leisure places were rapidly expanding geographically thanks to the railway and the emergence of major population centres. Very sensitive to storms, fires, collisions and wars, these areas of daily life have suffered strong disaffection from the 1980s, especially when competing with distant destinations now accessible by plane. Nevertheless, they still share a strong coastal identity: residents and tourists have formerly and profoundly appropriated these piers that structure many British seaside resorts. Visible from afar, the plea­sure pier welcomes regularly a large and varied audience. Faced with threats of demolition, mobilizations animated by a local patriotism are organized, well helped by piers heritagisation and the National Lottery’s financial contribution. Since the end of the 1990s, the regeneration of the British seaside resorts has begun, which relies alternately on the authenticity or modern reinterpretation of their piers. Finally, the popular pride displayed at the reopening after works shows that the feeling of belonging to a popular British seafront prac­tice remains deeply rooted.

International audience; The Roman port facilities of Incarville were investigated in 1995 during construction work carried out at the interconnection of the motorways A13-A154. The site is located on the left bank of the major bed of the Eure river, one kilometre upstream from the Seine-Eure-Andelle confluence. This area was particularly densely occupied in ancient times and hosts a great variety of settlement types. The port was established at the transition with the lower alluvial terrace from the mid-1st c. AD on and it lasted at least until the 5th c. AD. The initial port was set at the edge of an artificial channel, 25 m wide and over one kilometre long, and was comprised of a simple landing zone and a few buildings. During the 2nd c. AD a quay, a pier and additional buildings were built and provided the site with a more solid structure. In the 3rd c. AD the progressive silting up of the channel put an end to the biggest developments. Nonetheless, the site continued to be used in the 4th and 5th c. AD, as evidenced by the over-representation of certain imported products (African amphorae and East Gaulish terra sigillata). In this configuration, at the boundary between the territories of the Eburovices and the Veliocasses, the port of Incarville played the role of a staging post in the flow of goods between the axis of the lower Seine valley and the hinterland.; Étudiées en 1995 lors des travaux de l’interconnexion autoroutière A13-A154, les installations portuaires romaines d’Incarville (Eure) sont implantées sur la rive gauche du lit majeur de l’Eure, à 1 km en amont de la confluence Seine-Eure-Andelle, contexte particulièrement dense en occupations gallo-romaines de toutes natures. Elles se développent au contact de la basse terrasse alluviale à partir du milieu du Ier s. apr. J.-C. et fonctionnent au moins jusqu’au Ve s. apr. J.-C. Au bord d’un canal artificiel de 25 m de large et de plus de 1 km de long, les premiers équipements se limitent à une simple zone d’accostage et à quelques bâtiments. Dans le courant du IIe s. apr. J.-C., un quai, un môle et de nouveaux bâtiments structurent plus lourdement le site. Au IIIe s. apr. J.-C., le colmatage du canal condamne les plus gros aménagements. Toutefois, le site continue de fonctionner aux IVe et Ve s. apr. J.-C., comme en témoigne la surreprésentation de certains produits d’importation (amphores africaines et sigillées de Gaule de l’Est). Ainsi configuré, à la frontière des Éburovices et des Véliocasses, le port d’Incarville fait figure de véritable relais dans le flux des marchandises circulant entre l’axe de la basse vallée de la Seine et l’intérieur des terres.

International audience; Narbonne/Narbo Martius is located at the crossroads of sea, river and land routes, has been a place of exchange between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic since the 2nd c. BC. Its port system, which has constantly adapted to environmental constraints, includes an urban port as well as outports around the Bages/Sigean ponds located 4 km south of the city. The Aude, the ancient Atax, is mentioned by ancient authors as a major trade route. The collective project on the ancient ports of Narbonne led to large-scale excavations at the river mouth: it was channelled during the 1st c. AD and abandoned from the 5th c. AD on. It was the place where goods were transhipped from deep-sea vessels to river boats, as illustrated by the discovery of the Mandirac 1 wreck. Rarely observed in the Mediterranean, the use of wood is well documented here for the numerous constructions built in wetlands. The piles, bents and caissons were used to develop the banks and to build dykes framing the passage of the watercourse in the lagoon. Although the wooden pieces are found along the entire route, their location is adapted to variations in the substrate and to micro-local physical constraints (swell, current, wind). The maintenance of the structures over the long term implies phases of modification and reconstruction. The aim of this article is to better understand the choices and the variety of techniques used in the context of these river and port developments.; Narbonne/Narbo Martius, située au croisement de voies maritimes, fluviales et terrestres, a été un lieu d’échanges entre la Méditerranée et l’Atlantique dès le IIe s. av. J.-C. Son système portuaire, qui s’est constamment adapté aux contraintes environnementales, inclut un port urbain ainsi que des avant-ports autour des étangs de Bages/Sigean, situés à 4 km au sud de la ville. L’Aude, l’Atax antique, est mentionnée par les auteurs anciens comme une voie commerciale majeure. Le projet collectif de recherche sur les ports antiques de Narbonne a permis de réaliser des fouilles de grande ampleur sur son embouchure ; celle-ci fut canalisée au cours du Ier s. apr. J.-C. et abandonnée à partir du Ve s. apr. J.-C. Elle était le lieu du transbordement des marchandises depuis les navires hauturiers vers des bateaux fluviaux comme l’illustre la découverte de l’épave Mandirac 1. Rarement observée en Méditerranée, l’utilisation du bois est ici bien attestée pour les nombreuses constructions réalisées en milieu humide. Les pieux, palées et caissons vont servir à aménager les berges et à construire des digues encadrant le passage du cours d’eau dans la lagune. Si les bois se retrouvent sur l’ensemble du tracé, leur implantation s’adapte aux variations du substrat et aux contraintes physiques micro-locales (houle, courant, vent). Le maintien des ouvrages sur la longue durée implique des phases de modifications et de reconstructions. L’objectif de cet article est de mieux comprendre les choix et la variété des techniques mises en oeuvre dans le cadre de ces aménagements fluviaux et portuaires.

International audience; This tripartite article reports on the state of the investigations carried out in a small Roman port in the lower Dan valley, at Blainville-sur-Orne (Calvados), occupied from the end of the 1st c. to the middle of the 4th c. AD. First, the general state of knowledge about the site is presented, followed by a detailed description of the remains of the port facilities: quay, quayside boundary walls, foundations of two piers, narrow slipway with a stone-paved bottom. Second, the discussion focuses on the reconstruction that can be proposed for these facilities, using the existing modern port facilities as a basis, along the banks downstream from the Adour river downstream (Landes). By extension, the comparison makes it possible to discuss the role of small ports within the local economic networks. Lastly, the presentation looks at the issue related to the networking of similar complexes in Blainville-sur-Orne, as well as to various categories of rural ports that are thought to have existed in Roman times.; L’article expose, en trois points, les recherches menées sur le petit port romain de la basse vallée du Dan, à Blainville-sur-Orne (Calvados), occupé de la fin du Ier s. au milieu du IVe s. apr. J.-C. Après une présentation de l’état général des connaissances sur le site, le développement est consacré à la description détaillée des vestiges des équipements portuaires : quai, murets de limite du quai, soubassements de deux jetées, étroite cale au fond empierré. La discussion porte ensuite sur la restitution pouvant être donnée de ces installations, par comparaison avec le cas moderne des implantations portuaires existant le long des rives de l’Adour aval (Landes). Par extension, le parallèle permet de s’interroger sur la place des petits ports au sein des réseaux économiques locaux. La présentation s’achève sur la question du fonctionnement en réseau des complexes comparables à Blainville-sur-Orne, ainsi que sur les différentes catégories de ports ruraux qui devaient exister à l’époque romaine.
