Technology and Teacher Education is part of the Canadian Association of Teacher Education (CATE), a constituent of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE). Its mission is to foster a collaborative network of educational researchers dedicated to exploring the intersections of technology and teacher education in Canada. Aligning with this mission, this special issue showcases Canadian scholar expertise and amplifies the diverse voices of the TATE community. Inspired by discussions held during our annual TATE conference, where we focused on lessons learned from emergency remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid technological advancements that teacher education programs are navigating, this issue offers a collection of studies from Canadian researchers working to make teaching and learning with digital technologies more effective, inclusive, and equitable for all Canadians.

Background Wait times at Canadian multidisciplinary pain clinics have been reported as excessive for nearly 2 decades.Aims The aim of this study was to gain insight into the patient experience of waiting for chronic pain specialty care.Methods A cross-sectional survey of new patients waiting for an appointment was conducted in six multidisciplinary pain clinics, including one pediatric clinic, in Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba between February 2020 and October 2022. Participants were asked about the length of time they waited for their appointment since being referred, their quality of life, health care professionals seen while waiting, and an open-ended question, “Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?”Results Among the 493 adult and 100 pediatric respondents, 53% of adults and 82% of children reported wait times under 6 months, whereas 22% of adults and 4% of children waited longer than a year. Between 52% and 63% of adults and 29% to 48% of children reported being affected by chronic pain “quite a bit” or “extremely” on measures of quality of life. The most visited health care professionals while waiting for a pain clinic appointment were family doctors/nurse practitioners for adults and physiotherapists for children. Qualitative analysis of open-ended question responses revealed eight themes: system navigation issues, administrative issues, decreased quality of life, distress, self-advocacy, coping strategies, communication, and distrust.Conclusions Our findings provide real-time regional snapshots into the impact of long wait times experienced by Canadians living with chronic pain. There is an urgent need to better support patients during the waiting period. Expanding technologies such as electronic consultation hold great promise.

Este artículo tiene como propósito analizar la apreciación de la autoevaluación por parte de los docentes y su relación con los procesos de autorregulación de los estudiantes. La metodología abordada es diseño no experimental, con enfoque mixto y nivel descriptivo correlacional, se utiliza un método sintético analítico, con una técnica de encuesta y revisión de avances en el campo de la evaluación formativa en cinco instituciones educativas de sexto grado de educación media ubicadas en las ciudades de Pasto, Manizales, Bogotá, Villavicencio y el municipio de Talaigua Nuevo (Bolívar) en el año escolar 2023. Los resultados indican que los docentes tienen un conocimiento limitado sobre métodos de evaluación, los estudiantes carecen de conciencia sobre autorregulación y no hay incentivos para la autoevaluación. Se concluye que es esencial trabajar en aula para mejorar la comprensión y aplicación periódica de la autoevaluación y autorregulación, estableciendo criterios claros y consensuados.

Indigenous Peoples across the Arctic have adapted to environmental change since time immemorial, yet recent climate change has imposed unprecedented and abrupt changes that affect the land and sea upon which communities rely. Co-created community-based observing programs offer an opportunity to harness the holistic breadth of knowledge in communities with the goal of tracking Arctic change while simultaneously supporting community priorities and local-scale needs. The Alaska Arctic Observatory and Knowledge Hub (AAOKH) is a network of Iñupiaq observers from northern Alaska coastal communities working in partnership with academic researchers. Here, we describe five core functions that have emerged through AAOKH, which include tracking long-term environmental changes; communicating Indigenous-led observations of the environment and their meaning; place-based and culturally relevant education; enabling scientific and Indigenous Knowledge exchange; and supporting community-led responses to environmental change. We outline and discuss specific actions and opportunities that have been used to increase knowledge exchange of AAOKH observations, make space for the next generation of Indigenous scholars, and create locally relevant data products and syntheses that can inform resource management and community planning. We also discuss our ongoing efforts to increasingly shift toward a knowledge coproduction framework as we plan to sustain AAOKH into the future.

Este ensayo analiza la necesaria, pero subestimada aclaración de las diferencias –conceptuales y de implicación pedagógica– entre la escuela y la educación, la cual permite encadenar las promesas, estrategias y acciones que el “sistema educativo costarricense” ha desarrollado, pero que merecen ser contrastadas con las condiciones materiales para el cumplimiento de los objetivos ministeriales propuestos. Se toman en consideración las diferencias –abismales– entre lo urbano y lo rural, entre las instituciones públicas, privadas y subvencionadas, con la intención de establecer un primer trazo de una propuesta crítica y propositiva, la cual se asumirá como un compromiso por mejorar el aprendizaje de los niños, niñas y juventudes, en tiempos de cambio y ajuste.

Building on previous research, this study explored differences in university professors’ perceptions about writing from the beginning to the end of the baccalaureate experience across five common disciplines including biology, business, computer science, engineering, and psychology. Survey data provide insights regarding the relative importance of various aspects of writing along with information about the volume of writing, the extent to which feedback was provided and resubmissions were allowed, the types of writing completed for exams, the greatest writing challenges, and the most salient writing purposes across disciplines and over time. While factors such as the writing challenges students faced, seemed unaffected by discipline or time in a particular discipline, other factors were noticeably influenced by the students’ specific discipline, whether students were at the beginning or end of their baccalaureate experience, or both. These factors included distinct differences in the purposes of writing as well as different perceptions of the importance of various aspects of writing across disciplines. An understanding of both these commonalities as well as the differences should be useful for practitioners and university administrators as well as the students themselves.

Every philosopher who is concerned with practical rationality and the public import of philosophy assumes a politico-philosophical responsibility for his or her words, thoughts, and deeds. More often than not, this is a function of his or her place and time in history as well as the press of current events that claim the philosopher’s solicitude so as to intervene at least with the force of thought and words, if not with deeds. Yet, as philosophers such as Martin Heidegger and Albert Camus have argued, thinking is itself always the essential action that is needed in times of momentous decision, despite the seeming absurdity of events.

There is a clear need for more information on occupational exposure to pesticides on smallholder farms in developing countries. This study investigates the exposure of rice growers to pesticides through the use of knapsack/backpack sprayers, a widespread practice in developing countries such as Malaysia. We collected pesticide application information from 23 rice growers using face-to-face interviews and questionnaires. We used the information to predict total daily exposure to individual active substances across a rice-growing season using selected exposure models. We then compared the estimates with toxicity thresholds to determine the potential risks. The 23 rice growers cultivated between 0.6 and 3.8 hectares of rice and applied pesticides on three and 13 spray days across the season, using up to eight active substances on individual days. Individuals had estimated average daily exposures to individual substances between 4.1x10-3 and 1.3x10-1 mg kg-bw-1 day-1, with dermal exposure accounting for 89 – 99.6% of total exposure. Overall, 28% of the 408 applications’ exposure exceeded the toxicity threshold. This was due to highly toxic pesticides and growers not wearing gloves while working. Health risks can be reduced by providing training and information on pesticide product selection and application practices.

Malaysia has experienced significant economic growth in recent decades, and this has accounted for an increase in meat consumption. In Malaysia, the low supply of local meat creates a shortage in the market, encouraging consumers to purchase imported meat. Factors such as regional growth differences, seasonality changes, food safety and quality, personal tastes and habits, product prices, and health concerns, influence the demand for meat. So, it is important to find out how people in Segamat, Johor, think about and buy local meat. A total of 100 questionnaires were distributed through an online platform as a pilot study resulting in 60 meat consumers participation. Results identified that the key drivers that influenced meat purchases were price of meat and consumers’ perception on food safety. Besides, consumer perception towards local meat is focusing on freshness of the meat (slaughtered on the day it is sold, not frozen) (91.67%), and the origin of the meat (not imported meat) (96.67%). The findings obtained will help in providing insightful information to local meat suppliers and the Johor State Department of Veterinary Services, about the concerns of local meat consumers in Segamat everytime they purchase the item.

Coffee is one of Indonesia’s main products with the consumption rate reach 10 million tons in 2020-2021 globally. This high productivity raises the problem of coffee peel waste which has been utilized as animal feed or fertilizer. Eco enzyme, a complex solution formed by the fermentation of organic waste, sugar, and water can be used as an alternative for utilizing coffee peel waste. This research was conducted to test the enzymatic activity of eco enzyme from coffee peel and papaya peel that fermented for 2, 3, and 4 months. The enzymes tested were protease, amylase, and lipase using selective agar media 1% skim milk, 1% starch, and 5% olive oil respectively. The results obtained was the eco enzyme contains protease as indicated by the formation of a clear zone around the sample. Meanwhile, the negative results of amylase activity were thought to be due to the presence of caffeine from coffee peel and certain compounds from papaya peel which can inhibit α-amylase activity. The results of the lipase activity test could not be observed due to the large range of pH value of methyl red so that the reddish zone was not formed by the hydrolyzation of triglycerides into fatty acids that cause the pH value decrease.

Lithium is a rare earth element, but it is important in LIB manufacturing. Spent LIBs is a potential source of lithium. The research aim was to recover lithium from spent LiNCA and mixed LIBthrough selective leaching using carbonated water. The spent cathode and anode were separated by dismantling and dissolving using NaOH and hot water. The spent cathode was reduced by mixing with 20% spent anode and heating at temperature of 650 oC for 6 hours. The reduced cathodes of 25 g were mixed with 250 ml of water and flowed by 2 L/minute of CO2 gas for 150 minutes at ambient temperature. The residue was separated from filtrate. The reduced cathode and residue were examined by XRD and FTIR, while filtrate was heated for evaporating solvent to obtain precipitated Li2CO3. Theprecipitated Li2CO3 was 0,151 g/g of LiNCA and 0,034 g/g of mixed spent cathode. The characteristicsof Li2CO3 recovered from spent LiNCA closed to pure Li2CO3 even above the commercial Li2CO3 and met the requirements as an active precursor material for manufacturing LIB cathodes. Meanwhile Li2CO3 recovered from spent mixed cathode had some impurities and was needed further purification process.

The Mino Bimaadiziwin Homebuilders postsecondary education pilot project built Indigenous youth capacity and houses in two remote Anishinini reserves—Garden Hill and Wasagamack. To evaluate this community-led project, a sustainable livelihood assessment holistically measured the impact on 45 of the 70 (64%) Homebuilder students and the community. The community benefited by gaining three culturally appropriate houses built from local lumber and employment opportunities for Anishinini instructors. A longitudinal survey found five of the six livelihood assets improved statistically and significantly, including satisfaction with social relationships, cultural awareness, income and ability to pay bills, housing safety, and human development. Students reported better relations with their families and neighbourhood. Most (85%) of the 70 Homebuilder students earned postsecondary certificates either in forestry, homebuilding or both while obtaining a training stipend, which elevated their incomes. These positive outcomes occurred despite project underfunding, the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, climate change events, and inequitable housing policies under the Indian Act. Based on this project’s success, we recommend investing in Indigenous-led postsecondary education in community homebuilding projects. However, to attain equitable housing and human rights, a plan is needed to overturn the Indian Act, which keeps Indigenous people as “wards of the state” and their land in trust.

Over the past decade, opportunities for online learning have dramatically increased. Learners around the world now have digital access to a wide array of corporate trainings, certifications, comprehensive academic degree programs, and other educational and training options. Some organizations are blending traditional instruction methods with online technologies. Blended learning generates large volumes of data about both the content (quality and usage) and the learners (study habits and learning outcomes). Correspondingly, the need to properly process voluminous, continuous, and often disparate data has prompted the advent of cognification. Cognification techniques design complex data analytic models that allow natural intelligence to engage artificial smartness in ways that can enhance the learning experience. Cognification is the approach to make something increasingly, ethically, and regulatably smarter. This article highlights how emerging trends in cognification could disrupt online education.

Развитие у слова переносных, вторичных значений обусловлено соотношением денотативного и референтного компонентов, то есть сигматики и семантики. Исходной для исследования является гипотеза о том, что чем предмет находится дальше от обыденной жизни социума (то есть чем он экзотичнее, незначимее в практике, реже встречается носителю языка), тем денотативная часть названия слабее. Но этот асемантизм – кажущийся, ибо денотативная пустота тут же компенсируется развитием переносных значений, в большинстве своем коннотативных. В качестве объекта наблюдения автор выбрал слово крокодил, обозначающее экзотическое водоплавающее животное. Исследуется характеристика этой лексемы в толковом и частотном словарях русского языка, в ассоциативном словаре, Национальном корпусе, а также анализируется ряд примеров из русской художественной литературы: произведений Вл. Соловьева, А. Чехова, М. Горького, Т. Толстой, В. Кантора и др. Для русского сознания крокодил – существо маргинальное, и название его находится на периферии словарного состава. Национальный корпус русского языка дает на слово крокодил 500 документов, 1222 вхождения. Анализ показал, что около 2/3 этих документов содержат слово крокодил в переносных значениях. Тем самым подтверждается предположение о том, что слово, обозначающее денотат, не участвующий в повседневной жизни социума, имеет склонность к вторичному семантическому наполнению. Оно осмысляется метафорически, в соответствии с когнитивными и коммуникативными потребностями общества.

In the current philosophy of race and critical theory of racism, it is not self-evident to consider black men as producers of discourse and theory. It is as if we have unlearned to see them and their social position has been rendered uninhabitable for thought. This article questions this situation by drawing on the ideas of contemporary African-American philosopher Tommy J. Curry. Although black men are among the poorest, least socially mobile, and most massively discriminated against and incarcerated demographic groups in the United States of America, black masculinity is a priori disqualified as a locus of enunciation, because current gender studies and feminist theory assume that they enjoy some social privilege because of their gender. A kind of double bind runs through black and intersectional feminist thinking on the issue: on the one hand, it claims to refuse to universalise the categories of masculine and feminine, but on the other hand it always interprets black positions through an analogy with the positions of white women and men. The aim is to show how Curry's original argument and the field of study she initiated, Black male studies, allow us to think about the irreducible specificity of the place of enunciation of black men, beyond their assignation to what Fanon called the zone of non-being.

Background: Nearly 20% of children and adolescents have pain with disability 1 year after surgery, and they experience poor sleep, school absence, and decreased activities. Negative clinical, psychological, and developmental effects include greater pain medication use, longer recovery, and fear of future medical care. Research has found psychological and family influences (i.e., child and parental anxiety) on pediatric chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP), but a better understanding of the role of perioperative anxiety and its related states in predicting pediatric postsurgical pain is needed. The poor understanding of the causes of child CPSP can lead to misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment, with significant short- and long-term effects. Objectives: The aim of this review was to summarize the literature on children’s perioperative anxiety and parental anxiety in relation to acute postsurgical pain, CPSP, and pain trajectories. We also examined other related psychological factors (i.e., anxiety sensitivity, catastrophizing, pain anxiety, and fear of pain) in relation to pediatric acute and chronic postsurgical pain. Lastly, we discuss the interventions that may be effective in reducing children’s and parents’ preoperative anxiety. Conclusions: Our findings may improve the understanding of the causes of CPSP and highlight the gaps in research and need for further study.

IntroductionWe conducted a pilot assessment of the feasibility of implementing the International Alcohol Control (IAC) Study in Ontario, Canada, to allow for future comparisons on the impacts of alcohol control policies with a number of countries. MethodsThe IAC Study questionnaire was adapted for use in the province of Ontario, and a split-sample approach was used to collect data. Data were collected by computer-assisted telephone interviewing of 500 participants, with half the sample each answering a subset of the adapted IAC Study survey. ResultsJust over half of the sample (53.6%) reported high frequency drinking (once a week or more frequently), while 6.5% reported heavy typical occasion drinking (8 drinks or more per session). Self-reported rates of alcohol-related harms from one's own and others' drinking were relatively low. Attitudes towards alcohol control varied. A substantial majority supported more police spot checks to detect drinking and driving, while restrictions on the number of alcohol outlets and increases in the price of alcohol were generally opposed. ConclusionThis pilot study demonstrated that the IAC Study survey can be implemented in Canada with some modifications. Future research should assess how to improve participation rates and the feasibility of implementing the longitudinal aspect of the IAC Study. This survey provides additional insight into alcohol-related behaviours and attitudes towards alcohol control policies, which can be used to develop appropriate public health responses in the Canadian context.

IntroductionNous avons mené une évaluation pilote sur la faisabilité de la mise en œuvre de l’étude internationale sur le contrôle de l’alcool (IAC, pour International Alcohol Control) en Ontario (Canada) afin de pouvoir comparer les répercussions des politiques sur le contrôle de l’alcool dans différents pays. MéthodologieLe questionnaire de l’étude IAC a été adapté pour la province de l’Ontario. Les données ont été recueillies selon une approche par échantillon fractionné, au moyend’entrevues téléphoniques assistées par ordinateur réalisées auprès de 500 participants, chaque moitié de l’échantillon répondant à un sous­ensemble de l’enquête adaptée de l’étude IAC. RésultatsUn peu plus de la moitié de l’échantillon (53,6 %) a fait état d’une consommation fréquente d’alcool (une fois par semaine ou plus fréquemment) et 6,5 % des répondants ont fait état d’une consommation excessive occasionelle d’alcool élevée (8 consommations ou plus par occasion). Les taux de méfaits liés à l’alcool dont ont fait état les répondants, qu’il s’agisse de leur propre consommation ou de celle des autres, sont demeurés relativement faibles. Les attitudes à l’égard du contrôle de l’alcool étaient variées. La grande majorité des répondants s’est prononcée en faveur d’une augmentation du nombre de contrôles policiers d’alcoolémie pour détecter les cas de conduite avec facultés affaiblies, alors que les restrictions sur le nombre de points de vente d’alcool et l’augmentation du prix de l’alcool ont été généralement rejetées. ConclusionCette étude pilote a démontré que l’enquête IAC peut être mise en œuvre au Canada après quelques modifications. Les futurs travaux de recherche auront à explorer des moyens d’améliorer les taux de participation et la faisabilité de la mise en œuvre de l’aspect longitudinal de l’étude IAC. Cette enquête fournit des renseignements supplémentaires sur les comportements liés à l’alcool et sur les attitudes à l’égard des politiques de contrôle de l’alcool utilisables pour élaborer des interventions de santé publique propres au contexte canadien.

Does engagement with writing centre consultants in one-on-one consultations help students shift from remedial discourses toward meta-cognitive awareness more in keeping with the nature of peer review in an academic setting? This study investigates this question through looking longitudinally over a four-year period in a Canadian university writing centre. We situate this research within wider discussions of Standard English and remediation in student academic writing, as well as writing centre research that explores correlations between numbers of writing centre visits and both students’ confidence as writers and their intrinsic motivation. Using a corpus-supported genre and discourse analysis, we focus on student appointment requests, as well as summative writing centre consultant notes. Results suggest that deficit discourses are highly tenacious, which we explain in part as the result of the constraints inherent in the genre of requests for help, and also in terms of the institutional positioning of writing centres.

Background: Entrustment decisions may be retrospective (based on past experiences with a trainee) or real-time (based on direct observation). We investigated judgments of entrustment based on assessor prior knowledge of candidates and based on systematic direct observation, conducted in an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE). Methods: Sixteen faculty examiners provided 287 retrospective and real-time entrustment ratings of 16 cardiology trainees during OSCE stations in 2019 and 2020. Reliability and validity of these ratings were assessed by comparing correlations across stations as a measure of reliability, differences across postgraduate years as an index of construct validity, correlation to standardized in-training exam (ITE) as a measure of criterion validity, and reclassification of entrustment as a measure of consequential validity. Results: Both retrospective and real-time assessments were highly reliable (all intra-class correlations >0.86). Both increased with year of postgraduate training. Real-time entrustment ratings were significantly correlated with standardized ITE scores; retrospective ratings were not. Real-time ratings explained 37% (2019) and 46% (2020) of variance in examination scores vs. 21% (2019) and 7% (2020) for retrospective ratings. Patrick Modiano’s Dora Bruder and Chava Rosenfarb’s “In the Boxcar” – an excerpt from the as-yet not fully translated novel Letters to Abrasha – rely on original and creative methods in their responses to events and memory associated with the Holocaust. In contrast with these works, this article also considers the approach taken in Michal Glowinski’s memoir The Black Seasons, as well as in Barbara Engelking and Jacek Leociak’s The Warsaw Ghetto: A Guide to the Perished City. These texts convey, in a new light, pre-war and wartime sites: Paris, Auschwitz, Lodz, Warsaw, and the ghettos installed by the Germans in the latter two cities. AIM-North is a proposed satellite mission that would provide observations of unprecedented frequency and density for monitoring northern greenhouse gases (GHGs), air quality (AQ) and vegetation. AIM-North would consist of two satellites in a highly elliptical orbit formation, observing over land from ∼40°N to 80°N multiple times per day. Each satellite would carry a near-infrared to shortwave infrared imaging spectrometer for CO2, CH4, and CO, and an ultraviolet-visible imaging spectrometer for air quality. Both instruments would measure solar-induced fluorescence from vegetation. A cloud imager would make near-real-time observations, which could inform the pointing of the other instruments to focus only on the clearest regions. Multiple geostationary (GEO) AQ and GHG satellites are planned for the 2020s, but they will lack coverage of northern regions like the Arctic. AIM-North would address this gap with quasi-geostationary observations of the North and overlap with GEO coverage to facilitate intercomparison and fusion of these datasets. The resulting data would improve our ability to forecast northern air quality and quantify fluxes of GHG and AQ species from forests, permafrost, biomass burning and anthropogenic activity, furthering our scientific understanding of these processes and supporting environmental policy.

Background: Electronic data collection is increasingly available as a means to collect pain-related clinical trial data; however, effectiveness and costs relative to traditional data collection are uncertain. Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate data quality, protocol adherence, satisfaction, and resource requirements of electronic data collection (i.e., Internet-based electronic submission) compared to traditional data collection methods (i.e., paper-based diaries and telephone interviews) in a perioperative factorial randomized controlled trial. Methods: This study was an open-label two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial. Women (18–75 years) undergoing breast cancer surgery were allocated to either electronic or traditional data collection and completed pain-related questionnaires at baseline, postoperative period, and 3-month follow-up (NCT02240199). Results: We acquired outcome data at all time points from 78 randomized patients, 38 in the electronic group and 40 in the traditional group. This essay explores monuments, including the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa, and gravestones in Jewish cemeteries in Montreal and Vancouver. Alongside these sites it considers how Canadian Jewish literature presents possibilities for Jewish history and language to mark the Canadian landscape though a consideration of Leonard Cohen and Eli Mandel. A discussion of Canadian monuments is relevant in light of recent demonstrations focused on removing statues and monuments from parks and government buildings. The essay contrasts community-inspired projects like Vancouver’s Holocaust memorial with Ottawa’s “National” monument, whose unveiling prompted a discussion about appropriate ways to represent history. Cet essai explore les monuments, y compris le monument national de l’Holocauste à Ottawa, et les pierres tombales des cimetières juifs de Montréal et de Vancouver. Parallèlement à ces sites, il examine comment la littérature juive canadienne, notamment les écrits de Leonard Cohen et Eli Mandel, offre des opportunités pour l’histoire et la langue juives de marquer le paysage canadien. Une discussion sur les monuments canadiens est pertinente à la lumière des récentes manifestations visant à retirer les statues et les monuments des parcs et des édifices gouvernementaux. INTRODUCTION: accurate and timely laboratory diagnosis of yellow fever (YF) is critical to the Eliminate Yellow Fever Epidemics (EYE) strategy. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance recognized the need to support and build capacity in the national and regional laboratories in the Global YF Laboratory Network (GYFLN) as part of this strategy. METHODS: to better understand current capacity, gaps and needs of the GYFLN laboratories in Africa, assessments were carried out in national and regional reference laboratories in the 25 African countries at high risk for YF outbreaks that were eligible for new financial support from Gavi. RESULTS: the assessments found that the GYFLN in Africa has high capacity but 21% of specimens were not tested due to lack of testing kits or reagents and approximately 50% of presumptive YF cases were not confirmed at the regional reference laboratory due to problems with shipping. CONCLUSION: the laboratory assessments helped to document the baseline capacities of these laboratories prior to Gavi funding to support strengthening YF laboratories.

What leads poets into mystical, hermetic and occult studies? How do these traditions shape their poetic practice, and conversely, how do their poems deepen our understanding of the enduring power of these bodies of thought, belief, and ritual? In response to these questions, this paper focuses on Robert Duncan’s study of Kabbalah, especially Kabbalistic language mysticism, which he reads as “the description of the process of a poem.” For Duncan, the language magic of Kabbalah is an important model of poetic language – which is in itself magical. “By associations, by metaphor, by likeness of the part, by fitting as part of a larger figure, by interlinking of members, by share, by equation, by correspondence, by reason, by opposition, by pun or rhyme, by melodic coherence,” Duncan, as he writes in The H.D. Book, seeks to take us to a place “where the image becomes informed, from above or below, and takes over as an entity in itself, a messenger from a higher real.” Situating Duncan as the heir to nineteenth-century occult organizations and the rethinking of hermetic traditions in groups such as the Order of the Golden Dawn, I then proceed to a brief reading of his poem “Roots and Branches,” in order to demonstrate how Duncan’s kabbalistic vision of the “imaginary tree of the living in all its doctrines” awakens “transports of an inner view of things,” and secures the poetic imagination as the supreme vehicle of mystical experience.

El presente ensayo examina el tema del amor en la obra intelectual de Octavio Paz. Para el escritor mexicano, el amor es ciertamente una pasión humana, pero también es un concepto histórico que nació en la Provenza del siglo XII, a propósito del “amor cortés”. Así las cosas, este trabajo explora la temática del amor desde ambas perspectivas—como sentimiento y como concepto—. Distinto de la sexualidad y al erotismo, el amor debe comprenderse a partir de las nociones de libertad, creatividad (poética) y conciliación de los contrarios. Finalmente, la última parte de este trabajo analiza el tema propuesto por medio de la lectura de algunos poemas pacianos al respecto.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) has significant pediatric morbidity and mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa, where access to therapies such as hydroxyurea and opioids is often limited. Poor disease control and pain management adversely affect the well-being and mental health of affected children. Questionnaires have been utilized in other regions to report the quality of life (QOL) in children with SCD, but assessments from Africa are lacking. METHODS: children age 2-14 years with SCD presenting for routine outpatient consultations at Hospital Central de Maputo from June-August 2017 were offered participation. After informed consent, the Pediatric QOL Inventory (PedsQL) SCD Module was administered to all caregivers and children 5 years. Responses were scored from 0-100, with higher scores representing better QOL. RESULTS: a total of 14 children were included, with six (43%), four (29%), two (14%), and two (14%) from the age groups of 2-4, 5-7, 8-12, and 13-14 years, respectively. Mean overall patient QOL was 65.3 and 56.0 in child and caregiver respondents. In patients 5 years, the difference in mean overall QOL for those on/not on hydroxyurea was 0.6 (66.5-64.9) in child respondents and 15.8(68.4-52.6) in caregiver respondents. Domains related to worry/emotions and communication scored lower in QOL than pain-related domains for both patient and caregiver respondents. CONCLUSION: SCD has a negative impact on QOL as reported by this cohort of Mozambican pediatric patients and caregivers, with pain being less of a concern than emotional and interpersonal issues. A comprehensive, child-focused care approach with robust psychosocial support is needed.

Crusted scabies is a rare and highly contagious form of Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis infestation whose incidence may increase in the near future due to increasing use of immunosuppressive therapies and a general lack of awareness about the condition. It is misdiagnosed as psoriasis, irritant dermatitis or eczema. Delays in diagnosis lead to widespread transmission amongst contacts leading to potential community outbreak. Crusted scabies is extremely difficult to treat and there are growing concerns of possible resistance to current treatment. This case report describes a 44-year old Ghanaian woman with Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and diagnosed with skin scrapings. Treatment was initiated but the patient died from HIV related complications. Crusted scabies, though rare, should be an issue of global concern due to the potential for widespread dissemination. Adequate resources need to be channeled into scabies eradication as well as education of health personnel to promptly identify and treat cases.

Malgré toutes les politiques sanitaires mises en œuvre dans nos pays en développement, les ruptures utérines (RU) restent fréquentes. Elles revêtent des formes graves mettant en jeu le pronostic maternel et fœtal. Parmi les nombreux facteurs de risque, le plus fréquent cité par tous les auteurs est la cicatrice de césarienne. La plupart surviennent durant le travail ou en fin de grossesse. Les ruptures utérines au 1e et 2etrimestre restent exceptionnelles et leur expression clinique variable. Les auteurs rapportent un cas de rupture utérine spontanée sur grossesse de 15 semaines survenue chez une paucipare avec antécédent d´utérus cicatriciel. La clinique a été marquée par un tableau d´irritation péritonéale. L´exploration chirurgicale a révélé une rupture complète verticale allant du fond utérin au segment inférieur et ouvrant l´utérus en livre ouvert. La RU devrait donc être envisagée de principe devant un tableau douloureux abdominal avec signes d´hémopéritoine chez une gestante avec utérus cicatriciel, quel que soit le terme et même dans les deux premiers trimestres de grossesse, quel que soit l´âge (jeunes patientes) et la parité.

Desde a publicação dos Ditos e Escritos, o lugar da literatura na obra de Michel Foucault possui uma posição bem definida nas pesquisas acadêmicas, nas quais se ressalta sobretudo a abordagem nietzscheana da leitura proposta pelo filósofo. Recorrendo a novas publicações e aos manuscritos inéditos do Fonds Foucault-BnF, este texto enfocará o tema da literatura sob um outro prisma, à partir do estruturalismo da análise literária e do contexto filosófico da revista Tel Quel em sua relação com o Nouveau Roman. Enfatizando a importância do conceito de chr(38)quot;distânciachr(38)quot; em seus escritos sobre a literatura, discutir-se-á como várias das noções criadas por Foucault se encontram em diálogo com esta constelação teórica mais ampla. A relação entre a estrutura e o acontecimento, enquanto par conceitual que se encontrava no centro dos debates filosóficos nos anos 1960, nos guiará na compreensão das tensões e das adesões da metodologia foucaltiana no que tange à análise estrutural
