Abstract

Space is the root of Australian Aboriginal culture. The territory of each tribe is the result of the metamorphosis of a man or animal, whose spirit lies forever in the rock, river or mountain he was changed into. Each member of the tribe is the "traditional owner" of one of these places. He looks after it and he is the only one allowed to tell its story. It is only recently that the white population of Australia has acknowledged the right of Aboriginal people to claim their stolen territory. Abstract

Introduction: Fixed orthodontic treatment, typically initiated during adolescence (a crucial period of growth) raises interest in evaluating dietary modifications resulting from their implementation, providing essential information for formulating appropriate dietary advice. This systematic literature review aims to assess dietary changes in adolescents following orthodontic treatment., Material and Methods: An electronic search was conducted in the PubMed database with no time restrictions, following PRISMA guidelines. A combination of MeSH and non-MeSH terms, with no deadline, was applied, followed by a rigorous assessment of selected articles. The latest search was conducted on September the 20 th, 2023., Results: Among the initially identified 224 articles, only nine studies met the inclusion criteria. All, except one study, reported significant dietary modifications after treatment initiation., Conclusion: The installation of fixed orthodontic treatment in adolescents alters dietary habits, favoring soft foods. Anticipating the consequences on growth and diet habits is crucial, recommending tailored dietary advice before appliance placement. Abstract

T-cell checkpoint blockade therapies have revolutionized treatment protocols and prognosis in patients with cancer. Pointed out by the success of PD-1 (programmed cell death-1) plus CTLA-4 (cytotoxic-T-lymphocyte associated antigen 4) blockade in patients with melanoma, the perspective of new synergistic immunotherapy combinations seems to be an important opportunity to improve outcomes for patients. In this article, we first focus on immunotherapy combinations that have shown their efficiency and that are currently approved in solid tumors. Abstract

The Center Val de Loire region is particularly affected by the shortage of health professionals. The demographics of dentists are not immune to this situation and the retirement of a practitioner has become a real public health issue. For this purpose, bridges were created between the faculties of odontology of Nantes, Clermont-Ferrand and the Faculty of Medicine of Tours, to welcome short cycle students in Center Val de Loire region, to create a link with the liberal practitioners and to allow the students to confront the health issues of this territory.

Abstract

Background: During its clinical practice, the dentist is often faced with issues concerning the determination of teeth shade. This step is considered sensitive by numerous clinicians and dental laboratories. The objective of this study was to test the ability of professional dentists to visually determine the teeth color., Material and Methods: Eleven dentists classified 35 unmarked samples according to their hue, chroma and value from 2 standardized tooth shade guides Ivoclar-Vivadent (Chromascop) et Vita (3D Master). The ratio between the number of matching samples and the total amount of samples from each group was calculated and converted to a score between 0 and 10., Results: Better scores were obtained for value and chroma with the 3D Master shade guide than with the Chromascop shade guide (p < 0.001). The opposite result was obtained for the hue (p < 0.05). Globally, better results were obtained for the value and chroma, the hue being the most difficult item to evaluate. A satisfying "color perception" was observed in 69% of the cases., Conclusion: The results of this study argue in favor of a specific training for tooth shade determination in Odontology.

Abstract

For 20 years, on a worldwide scale, the prevalence of obesity has always progressed as well in child as in adult. Obesity is frequently associated with other pathologies: cardiovascular, oncologic, systemic (diabetes) or oral. In this situation, the follow-up of obesity and its co morbidity needs a multidisciplinary approach. Obesity and oral health pathologies have risk factors in common, particularly dietary one. Indeed, it is established that food affects oral health. In the same way, an unbalanced diet raises the risk of overweight or obesity. Thereby, owing to these inter relations, the World Health Organization advocates to insert oral health in the Program for Global Health. First, this study presents the factors of risks that obesity and oral health diseases have in common. After, the risks and the specificity of the care of obese patients are outlined. Consecutively, a program of prevention and education of oral health is proposed.

Abstract

Continuous monitoring of distal oesophageal pH and oesophagoscopy were performed in 28 children aged 15 days to 12 years (mean: 14 months) intubated and ventilated for bronchiolitis (7), pneumonia (8), epiglotitis (2), neurological distress (8), whooping cough (2) or recurrent apneic spells (1). Esophageal pH was studied 2-8 days (mean: 2 days) after intubation; its duration was 12-23 h 50 min (M: 22 h). An abnormal gastroesophageal reflux was presumed when the percent of total monitoring time during which the esophageal pH fell below 4.0 was above 5.2%. The esophagoscopy was carried out on the day following the pH monitoring. All children were in the supine position and fed a pH 7 diet infused continuously with a nasogastric tube; 15 children were under pancuronium. An abnormal gastroesophageal reflux was found in 4 children, associated with a benign esophagitis in 2. A benign esophagitis without gastroesophageal reflux was found in 3 cases. One child had a peptic ulcer of the bulb without gastroesophageal reflux nor oesophagitis. 21 children had no abnormality. Only one of the 15 children under pancuronium had an abnormal gastroesophageal reflux. We conclude that in intubated children fed continuously with a nasogastric tube, gastroesophageal reflux is unfrequent and, when present, appears to have little consequences.

Abstract

Seventy-five patients with Kawasaki disease were studied in Hôpital Sainte-Justine between June 1979 and December 1984. Echography (abdominal and cardiac) proved to be a useful tool in the detection of the complications of this syndrome. Coronary aneurysms were present in 9% of our patients; two-dimensional echocardiography easily identified the proximal ones. In all patients, aortography allowed us to identify the extension of the lesions more distally. The left coronary artery was affected in all patients while in five both coronary arteries were involved. In all 75 patients chest radiographs were normal. Abdominal echography permitted diagnosis of a hydrocholecyst in three patients.

Abstract

The etiologic factors of protein-energy malnutrition (P.E.M.) have been studied in 59 children with kwashiorkor (KWK) or marasmus-kwashiorkor (MKWK) and living in an african urban area. The decline of breast feeding leads to an earlier P.E.M., mainly MKWK. This decline is linked to urbanization, mother's activities, dislocation of traditional structures and use of artificial formulas. Essentially based on cereals, the diet is responsible of the post-weaning P.E.M. Poverty, ignorance and food taboos are related to a lack in weaning food varieties. A small number of infants with KWK had a rich protein diet putting back the cause of an hypoproteic diet on the KWK onset. Infections play a determinant role in the onset of KWK and of some MKWK, after 2 years of age. Diarrhoea, measles, bronchopulmonary and parasitic diseases are the most prevalent infections. Among socio-cultural factors, conjugal disorders are predominating with child-mother break-up and father's bonding failure. At the opposite of rural areas, the family size is reduced. The three first birth ranges are specially concerned with young inexperienced mothers.
