In this study, the authors developed a new sidewall velocity-controlled cylindrical angle of repose measurement apparatus that can capture images of a sand heap continuously using two orthogonal cameras in order to reduce the cost of photography. The developed apparatus was used to measure the angle from formation to repose of sand heap using different grain sizes distribution and to assess the effect of grain size distribution on the angle of repose. The formation process of the sand heap was continuously measured using the experimental apparatus, and it was found that the sand heap became steady state when it reached a certain height. It is inferred that the angle of repose measured in a stationary state indicates the inclination angle of the sand heap at a certain point in time, suggesting the possibility of obtaining a highly accurate angle of repose with fewer experiments by using this experimental apparatus to continuously acquire and average the inclination angle of a sand heap in a steady state. For samples with a stepped grain size distribution, the angle of repose was found to be higher than for samples with a gentle grain size distribution at the same 20% grain size D20 and mean grain size D50. It was found that the angle of repose increased logarithmically with increasing coefficient of uniformity. Based on these results, it is clear that for a well-graded sand, it is the grain size rather than the coefficient of uniformity that has an effect on the angle of repose.

The strength and failure modes of binary granular mixture composed of two different sized particles, such as gravel and sand, vary depending on the content of gravel (large particle content). The binary granular mixture structures are classified into small particle skeleton structure, intermediate skeleton structure, and large particle skeleton structure, depending on the large particle content. The authors propose a microscopic model to evaluate the range of large particle content in the intermediate skeleton structure, and confirm its applicability in Angle of reposed experiment. Parameters obtained from the experiment, such as “ peak principal stress difference” and “ principal stress difference at large axial strain” as strength, “ shear band slip angle” and “shear band width “ as failure mode, were discussed for large particle content. The results showed that the large-particle content of the intermediate skeleton ranged from 8.7% ~ 52.7% for the peak principal stress difference, 3.2% ~ 44.1% for the principal stress difference at large axial strain, 12.0% ~ 77.3% for the shear band slip angle, and 4.1% ~ 81.2% for the shear band width. The microscopic model calculated range for the intermediate skeleton structure was 2.3%~66.4%, which is generally wider than the experimental results under confining pressure. The microscopic model gives the range of the initial (sedimentary) state of the intermediate skeleton structure. It is inferred that the range of the intermediate skeleton structure narrows with increasing confining pressure. Therefore, the microscopic model should take into account the effect of confining pressure.

Este trabalho tem como proposta apresentar, a partir de uma análise do poema “Rimbaud”, de Chacal, uma reflexão a respeito da visualidade na poesia dentro do domínio da semiótica discursiva. Para isso, utilizaremos a proposição teórica e metodológica de Pondian descrita em “Gramática dapoesia escrita: figuras retóricas”. Como resultado, identificamos os principais efeitos de sentido criados pela exploração de recursos no plano da expressão gráfico-visual do poema e a especificidade do destinatário da comunicação construído a partir disso. Ao final, destacamos a pertinência dos estudos relativos à visualidade na poesia, marcadamente a partir dos paradigmas colocados pelas vanguardas modernas, na passagem do século XIX para o XX, no campo da poesia.

Fairness and justice are longstanding constructs in the discussions around ethics and morality. And fairness, or the principle of procedural fairness, as the bedrock of Ombuds practice in Canada, creates a responsibility for Ombuds to advance and hold institutions and individuals accountable to ethical processes and decisions. While effective conflict engagement forms a significant part of our work as well, Canadian Ombuds practice is firmly founded on and delivered through a fairness lens. Fairness has been described as a flexible and context-specific construct, its content to be determined by the individual circumstances of the case. In this flexible approach lies the opportunity for Ombuds to help humanize bureaucracy for those who must navigate it, by encouraging rules, processes and decisions that support the diversity and multiplicity of contexts, experiences and perspectives. It gives Ombuds a way to define fairness that does not mean treating everyone the same, which is an interpretation of “fairness” that actually creates and perpetuates inequity and unfairness. This is supported by Canadian jurisprudence from the Supreme Court of Canada that embeds equality and inclusivity into the concept of fairness. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canadian values and the diversity of the Canadian populace inform the standard of fairness in a way that support Ombuds to advance fairness in a way that is inextricable from equity.

The phenomenon of ground undergoing large plastic deformation, leading to collapse, occurs due to the localization of unstable deformation. The investigation of shear band is important in order to understand the destructive phenomenon. Therefore, a series of experiments were conducted on sands with different particle characteristics so that behaviour of the shear band of sand under plane strain compression could be investigated. Specifically, Toyoura sand and two kinds of coral sand, hereafter referred to as coral sand A (with smaller average particle size) and coral sand B (with larger average particle size) were used. The shear band was evaluated using PIV (Partial Image Velocimetry) analysis. As a result, it became clear that the relationship between shear inclination angle and internal friction angle does not hold for the two kinds of coral sand because the shear inclination angle is low. The ratio of the average value of the shear band width to the average grain size at the peak was 10 to 20 times, 7 to 10 times, and 5 to 8 times in the order of Toyoura sand, coral sand A, and coral sand B. The sample standard deviation was 0.1 to 0.9 mm, 0.9 to 1.6 mm, and 1.4 to 1.9 mm.

We attempt to apply K-Ar dating to extracted smectite from bentonite formations collected by different age formations from Japan, China, and America. The results show that the K-Ar ages of smectite are younger than the expected geological age estimated from the stratigraphic data or other research data. The time differences increase with increased age, and K-Ar ages in this study also increase with increased age. For example, smectite in the old strata of bentonite has an older age than smectite in the young strata. K-Ar dating by smectite has the greatest potential for indicating the crystallized age of smectite.

Collapses of embankments have occurred due to heavy rainfall. It is very important to understand the strength properties under various unsaturated, partially saturated and fully saturated conditions of compacted materials. So, a series of unsaturated and saturated triaxial compression tests for compacted soils have been conducted to understand the effects of drainage and saturation on undrained strength. Soil samples were collected from several road embankments to carry out the experiments. The undrained (CU) strength of compacted material decreased with increase in the degree of saturation. Especially, the strength decreased from partially saturated condition to fully saturated condition was remarkable. The decrease of the materials with volume contractive behaviour was appeared clearly.

O objetivo do artigo é descrever a influência de fatores organizacionais e comportamentais como antecedentes da intenção comportamental de uso de um sistema do tipo ERP. A coleta de dados se deu por meio de questionário estruturado que foi aplicado a uma amostra composta por 229 docentes e 30 técnicoadministrativos da Universidade Federal do Pará. A análise de dados foi realizada através de estatísticas descritivas e de modelagem de equação estrutural com a técnica de mínimos quadrados parciais (Partial Least Square-PLS). Todas as hipóteses do modelo de pesquisa foram suportadas. O coeficiente de determinação (R²) foi considerado alto ou médio em cinco das seis variáveis endógenas, assim como o modelo conseguiu explicar 47,3% da variação da intenção comportamental de uso de um ERP. O estudo contribuiu no sentido de demonstrar que o ‘apoio da alta administração’, a ‘comunicação’, o ‘treinamento’, a ‘cooperação’ e a ‘complexidade tecnológica’ são fatores críticos relevantes que influenciam a intenção de uso futuro de sistemas integrados de gestão, mesmo no contexto de uma organização pública. Thin metal films deposited on polymers have been attracting much attention in flexible electronics. Various combinations of film and polymer substrate are expected to be developed. In this paper, deformation and fracture of thin metal film on polymer substrate was briefly analysed and the influencing factors were summarized. After that, focusing on the shape and thickness of thin metal film on polymer substrate, cracking behavior of small rounded-rectangular thin gold films called “strips” with a thickness less than one micrometer was observed under cyclic and stepwisely-increased trapezoidal tensions. The strips were deposited on a polycarbonate plate specimen, and wide and narrow strips with different thickness were prepared for the tests. The cracking behaviour was successfully observed and the increasing rate of crack number with the load or strain was examined. Since most cracks were initiated from the small defects, the crack initiation behavior was correlated with the distribution of defects.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to demonstrate the distinctiveness of work engagement and workaholism by examining their relationships with sleep quality and job performance., Method: A total of 447 nurses from 3 hospitals in Japan were surveyed using a self-administrated questionnaire including Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), the Dutch Workaholism Scale (DUWAS), questions on sleep quality (7 items) regarding (1) difficulty initiating sleep, (2) difficulty maintaining sleep, (3) early morning awakening, (4) dozing off or napping in daytime, (5) excessive daytime sleepiness at work, (6) difficulty awakening in the morning, and (7) tiredness awakening in the morning, and the World Health Organization Health Work Performance Questionnaire., Results: The Structural Equation Modeling showed that, work engagement was positively related to sleep quality and job performance whereas workaholism negatively to sleep quality and job performance., Conclusion: The findings suggest that work engagement and workaholism are conceptually distinctive and that the former is positively and the latter is negatively related to well-being (i.e., good sleep quality and job performance).
