In England statutory expectations for literacy education place little emphasis on contemporary modes and media of communication and, as such, are out of step with contemporary life. We explore how open-ended, collaborative pedagogies can provide rich contexts for authentic everyday communication even in the context of such reductionist curriculum and assessment frameworks. This leads us to claim that the success of such approaches depends on the enthusiasm, experience and creativity of teachers and that remembering longstanding professional commitments in language and literacy teaching is at least as important as rethinking the curriculum when advocating for literacy provision more suited to current times.

The authors evaluated multiple remotely sensed datasets for their contributions to operational wetland mapping in a subarctic, boreal cordillera study site in Yukon, Canada. They assessed Sentinel-2 optical imagery, Sentinel-1 C-band and ALOS PALSAR L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, and topographical data from the territorial digital elevation model (DEM) using an object-based image analysis (OBIA) approach. Three machine-learning algorithms were tested, namely random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbor (KNN), using various data combinations (11 model scenarios). RF produced the most accurate results when incorporating all optical, SAR and DEM data (86.5%, kappa 0.84), with open water (100% producer accuracy, PA), marsh (75% PA) and swamps (85.7% PA) being detected most accurately. When assessed in isolation, Sentinel-2 optical data consistently generated more accurate classifications than either SAR platform or DEM data. RF variable importance metrics provided further explanation to these results, indicating the 8 most powerful variables to be optical. Variable reduction tests also produced comparable accuracies, indicating that an optimal RF model can be built based on predictive power rankings. The results can be used to inform resource managers on the efficacy of current datasets and their applications to wetland mapping in northern, subarctic environments.

Sin embargo, se desconoce su actividad como banquero privado. Esta investigación realiza un examen minucioso de fuentes originales para determinar las circunstancias que rodearon la fundación del Banco Mercantil y Agrícola de Sonora, la suerte de sus principales negocios y los recursos que empleó para subsistir casi dos décadas. Por supuesto, Calles fue su principal impulsor y accionista. Entre otras líneas analizadas están su formación empresarial, el desempeño de los gerentes y la influencia de la actividad económica regional sobre la del Banco, así como las redes político empresariales que alentó e incubó.

Soon after adopting ‘F. Anstey’ as his nom de plume, Thomas Anstey Guthrie (1856–1934) scored a striking success with his début novel Vice Versâ (1882). On a necessarily smaller scale, he then repeated the feat months later with his short story ‘The Black Poodle’. By writing in the novel about a boys’ school (though with a touch of magical mystery) and by centring the story on a dog (though with a distinct sting in the tail), he demonstrated how well attuned he was to the taste of the times. The recourse had by the plots of both to doubles and stand-ins means that ‘The Black Poodle’ trots in the footprints of Vice Versâ. It is also a prospective epitome of Anstey’s mature work, pointing a direction for much in his subsequent career. In 1920 he came back round to it with a vengeance, embarking on a silent film scenario which reprises the original storyline. The 1920 script gives this an unexpected extension, however, as if to teach the old dog some new tricks. On many other occasions Anstey applied in a more general way what writing the story had taught him about the value of having his exploration of human nature and human emotions refracted through canine experience. The reasons for which Anstey so badly needed dogs both in his life and in his work can be inferred from his autobiography, and from the most personal of his unpublished writings. It was indeed as doubles and stand-ins that they came to serve him. As he grew more deeply attached to the dogs he owned, and increasingly inclined to identify both himself and his loved ones with them, so he transferred to them the griefs with which he could not otherwise deal. In the end he perhaps depended on that displacement for his ability to function, or his ability to continue coming across, as the comic writer whom the success of Vice Versâ had brought to birth.

In search of thermal comfort, over the years, various techniques have been developed to adapt to the conditions of the enclosures, depending on the region and the activity carried out. Thus, this project seeks to evaluate the radiative sky cooling potential for various areas of Panama. This evaluation will be carried out by developing a simplified mathematical model based on meteorological data. An uncertainty-sensibility analysis of the model was also carried out to highlight the critical parameters. Radiative sky cooling systems have been shown to be susceptible to cloudiness and humidity. With a tropical climate, Panama is critical to consider these two variables when developing the simplified mathematical model. Another aspect to consider when estimating the cooling potential will be the hours of the day when there is no solar radiation.

The bodies of murdered Mexican women in Roberto Bolaño's novel 2666 have been taken by critics to signify the biopolitical power of the neoliberal order. This article will contend that such readings overlook a broader crisis of bodily representation, which is apparent both in 2666 and in Bolaño's earlier novels. The extent to which the body might be ‘read’ as part of a signifying system is insistently challenged in Bolaño’s work, where images of the human are frequently fragmented or unstable. Drawing on ideas from Levinas and Deleuze, I suggest that the difficulty of representing the human, and the political implications of that act, are particularly clear when Bolaño approaches the face. I then argue, following Jean-Luc Nancy, that the theological imagery which accrues around the body of the artist in Bolaño’s work stages the deconstruction of Christian humanist aesthetics. Ultimately, Bolaño’s fragmented bodies invite a mode of reading which is not uniquely concerned with representation.

Two body marine systems, like a Tender Assisted Drilling (TAD) vessel coupled with a floating Dry-Tree Unit (DTU), have become very common in offshore operations. One of the unavoidable challenge we have to cope with is the connection between the TAD and DTU should make sure the TAD does not drift away from the platform and also avoid the possible collision in case of a harsher environment. The objective of this study is to understand the hydrodynamic interactions between the two coupled floating bodies and improve the devising of the innovative connection system. In this study, an innovative rigid connection system, the coupling arm is applied to connect the TAD and a DTU, in this case, a Tension Leg Platform (TLP). The whole system is modelled by the commercial software HARP. A comprehensive parametric study on the pretension and the nominal length of the coupling arm is carried out. The hydrodynamic analysis of the coupled TAD-TLP system elucidates the interactions between the two bodies. The chosen combination of the coupling arm pretension and the nominal length will determine the required stroke range and maximum forces needed to design the innovative coupling arm for safe operations.

Este ensayo revisa la reforma monetaria de 1931 y su enmienda de 1932. Un objetivo central es profundizar el conocimiento de los problemas económicos y monetarios que las causaron. La revisión es pertinente por el desequilibrio presente actualmente en la historiografía y los énfasis de su enfoque. Por esto, el ensayo cuestiona la historiografía canónica, sus fuentes y la pertinencia de sus premisas y conclusiones que aquí se examinan a la luz de argumentos y fuentes distintas (algunas contrarias), en aras de construir una visión más equilibrada del momento y de las decisiones que normaron el cambio de políticas monetarias.

¿Qué relevancia tiene preservar los Archivos Bancarios para México? En primer lugar, porque los archivos permiten reexaminar la buena o mala experiencia histórica de esas organizaciones y en consecuencia distinguir los factores críticos que permitieron su supervivencia o las condujeron a su liquidación. En segundo, porque permiten describir y explicar las relaciones entre la actividad financiera y el crecimiento económico. Adicionalmente, porque la formación de generaciones mejor capacitadas de banqueros atraviesa por el conocimiento más puntual, más difundido y responsable de la actividad bancaria vista en una perspectiva histórica. En sentido contrario, la realización de nuevas investigaciones sobre el ramo puede dificultarse por malas condiciones o falta de información sobre el desempeño histórico de las organizaciones financieras. Su dispersión, el desinterés de los propios directivos bancarios, y la ausencia de una regulación clara pueden multiplicar los problemas que enfrenta la preservación de la memoria histórica de la banca.
