This qualitative study investigates the integration of multicultural literature within higher education classrooms, examining experiences, challenges, necessary support, and perceived impacts on students. Framed within critical pedagogy theory, the research aimed to uncover insights into the transformative potential of diverse narratives. Guided by qualitative research principles, specially descriptive phenomenology, the study employs semi-structured interviews with literature instructors selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved multiple online platforms to facilitate candid discussions, ensuring a diverse representation of perspectives. The interview guide was rigorously developed and validated through pre-testing and expert consultation, ensuring relevance to the research objectives. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim for thematic analysis, a methodical approach to identifying patterns and themes within the data. Inductive reasoning guided the analysis process, allowing for theory formulation from observed patterns. Intercoder reliability checks and member-checking techniques were employed to enhance data validity and credibility. The analysis of participant responses revealed multifaceted teaching strategies, emphasizing the significance of cultural representation, innovative approaches, and fostering cross-cultural understanding. Teachers adapt their methods to accommodate diverse student voices while leveraging technology and cultural sensitivity. This study emphasises that institutions, educators, and students collectively contribute to fostering a culturally enriched learning environment. It also contributes to inclusivity and diversity in education, cultivating cultural intelligence and a broader understanding of global perspectives. The study highlights the necessity for literature teachers to have access to diverse resources, professional development opportunities, and collaboration for effective integration. Moreover, higher education institutions are crucial in supporting this integration through curriculum enhancements, resource allocation, and adequate preparation time. Despite challenges such as limited institutional support, the personal dedication and commitment of teachers and students play a pivotal role in successfully integrating multicultural literature into educational settings. These findings provide nuanced insights into the complexities of integrating multicultural literature in higher education, contributing to educational theory, policy development, and pedagogical practices.

This article presents the problems that highly developed countries have had over the years, facing a period of exacerbated migrations. Once immigrants have arrived in highly developed countries, they go through a process of ethnic and cultural transition that can have consequences at the level of individuals' personality, but also at the level of the country. Educating peoples on multiculturalism that promotes and integrates ethnic and racial diversity can be a starting point for homogenizing groups. Educational programs that promote the integration and understanding of ethnic minorities in the majority, through social learning, become the key to the success of the cohesion of unitary groupsthat present a harmonious development of the individual.

This paper presents the trajectory of Jean E. Jackson’s principal contributions to South American anthropology within the scope of the dossier “Femmes pionnières de l’anthropologie sud-américaniste.” While we focus on her pioneering ethnographic work with the Indigenous peoples of the Colombian Vaupés, we also consider how her ethnographic perspective connects to her other lines of research on identity, indigenous movements and chronic pain patients. Our discussion draws on Jackson’s many publications and on our conversations with her in the context of several interviews. Finally, we emphasize the relevance of gender as a consistent thread throughout Jackson’s research trajectory—both as a topic of attention in her research, and as a pivot point in her own positioning as a female ethnographer.

The Chartered Community of Navarre, European Plural Region. With a population of around 660.000 inhabitants, the Chartered Community of Navarre is one of the smallest autonomous communities in Spain. Since the since the 1960s, this border region with no sea outlets has begun to show considerable dynamism in various economic sectors. The resident foreign population has gradually grown, mainly Moroccan, Ecuadorean, Colombian, Romanian. Today it represents almost 11% of the total and is strongly transforming the identity of a proudly regionalist community, linked to its traditions and, in some areas, to the Basque language. Navarre is increasingly acquiring the physiognomy of a plural and multi-ethnic region. This paper intends to investigate this transition, in which immigrant communities are protagonists.

7. Theory of 'Cultural Memory' by J. Assmann and Reflection of Multiculturalism: Myth, Memory and Remembrance in Cultures of 'Axial Age'

The paper discusses various aspects of the concept of “cultural memory” coined by Jan Assmann and related both to the problem of determining the categories of culture that became the first objects of philosophical reflection in the era of the Axial Age and to the issues of the modern crisis of the ideology of globalism and multiculturalism. Using the example of some categories of an archaic myth that have not lost their cultural and social relevance at present, the variability of the genesis of philosophy in various civilizations of the epoch of the “Axial Age” is demonstrated - both those in which it arises as an independent form of worldview and those where this process stops at the stage of a highly speculative myth. Special attention is paid to the cultural and social aspects of memory and recollection of the past as forms of spiritual “resistance” to external cultural influences and the preservation of religious and ethnic identity, which is equally relevant both during the genesis of philosophy and in modern post-industrial society during the crisis of globalist ideology and the philosophy of multiculturalism.

The article studies culture codes in contemporary children’s literature and aims to identify how language units and imagery condense and transmit the culture code of a specific society and epoch. The authors narrow down the research to two countries — Scotland and Armenia — because of the common features of their children’s literature: the use of a different language in fiction, the approach to the cultural component in fiction and the influence of the countries’ past. The research has two distinct directions: based on selected texts by Scottish writers the paper discusses the issue of transmitting culture codes in a multi-voiced medium. Further, based on the text by Narine Abgarian, a Russian writer of Armenian origin, the culture codes of childhood in the multicultural setting are discussed. It is argued that despite the current trends in the international book market, children’s literature containing authentic cultural information should be promoted. Such children’s literature performs an important mission toward shaping the readers’ identity, raising awareness of one’s own culture and facilitating intercultural communication.

Advocates of multiculturalism claim that it supports the rights of cultural minorities and the public recognition of cultural differences. However, this article shows that this cannot be true of Indian culture as it has become transported to Britain, where multiculturalism actually poses a threat to it. Using the resources of the research programme of the Ghent School on the comparative study of India and Europe, this article substantiates this claim by showing how the dominant conception of cultural differences as well as the classical conception of the Indian caste system, which takes over the Indian social structures of jati, are both imported by multiculturalist thought and practice. The concretizing of multiculturalism in the form of anti-discrimination law is not only anticipated by a destructive politics of identity, but the law itself can be used to foster the destruction of Indian culture on the pretext of targeting the discriminatory caste system. The present study focuses on human rights theory and multiculturalism. The general objective is to understand how the conception of multiculturalism has repercussions on an effective universalization of human rights that respects cultural differences between peoples. As a methodology, the proposal is to conduct a literature and documental review through legislative documents and selected theoretical framework. The approach will be hypothetical-deductive. The hypothesis that will be tested is that the conception of multiculturalism is fundamental for a universalization of human rights that respects cultural differences between peoples. Finally, it is concluded that the adoption of human rights as multicultural is a necessary means to make them effective and egalitarian in application worldwide, however, it is important to recognize that we are still far from this ideal.

Dionne Brand ,posthumanism ,more-than-human ,multiculturalism ,Language and Literature - Abstract
The article, which originally appeared in “TransCanadiana: Polish Journal of Canadian Studies”, offers a posthuman reading of Dionne Brand’s short story Blossom. It starts with a general discussion on posthumanism, providing some critical insights about posthuman thought. It then offers a reading of Dionne Brand’s short story Blossom through a problematization of the (liberal humanist) notion of the ‘human’. In particular, it focuses on the specific language used in the story, the spatial categories employed by Brand, and the act of giving up one’s self‑possession to more‑than‑human powers as Blossom’s way to self‑empowerment. By becoming a priestess of the goddess Oya (or, indeed, the goddess herself), Blossom is able to escape the modern Western socio-political discourses of authenticized and stabilized identities based on race, gender, religion, cultural background, and Western‑inflected ‘humanity’.

This article examines the Jewish ethnic identification of Brazilian Pentecostals based on the ethnography of a Judaizing evangelical community. This identification is linked to the dismantling of mestiçagem [miscegenation] discourses in Brazil. The adoption of multicultural narratives has fostered a discursive transition and contributed to the emergence of ethnoreligious revivals inspired by Judaism. This article also points to the limitations of ethnogenetic approaches to understanding ethnoreligious revivals in Brazil.

This article focuses on the ideological debate that interculturalism has aroused in Quebec's intellectual field since the 2000s. While it has long served as a point of convergence between neonationalist intellectuals seeking to combine pluralism and nationalism, the interculturalist model has not, however, prevented the resurgence of calls for tighter control over migrants and minority cultural practices. The thesis advanced is that this trend confirms the eclipse of the attempt to reconcile nationalism and pluralism within interculturalism. To support this thesis, our article documents the weakness of Quebec interculturalism in the face of the ideological blocs formed by federal multiculturalism, conservative nationalism, and the rise of anti-racist and decolonial criticisms in Quebec. Vis-à-vis these competing positions, the contradictions of interculturalism regarding the alleged privilege of the majority over minorities have come to light in the course of the controversies that the article examines over a period of twenty years. The European integration content provided by the Danube River contributes to the successful solution of the problem of intercultural education of the younger generation. The origins, in particular of the Danube Bessarabia, go back centuries, from the Tripoli culture. This circumstance in cultural studies largely explains the factor of polyethnicity of the society of the Ukrainian Danube region, which determines the centuries-old interpenetration of cultures of representatives of different ethnic groups, the need to take into account the upbringing of the younger generation on the priorities of universal values and the imperative of European integration. Some interactive forms of work with students have been detailed, where the celebration of the International Danube Day is the basic one.

The spoken word and slam poetry of Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan and Leeds Young Authors, performed live and broadcasted online, is redefining who shapes and constitutes the British city—here Leeds—and its literature today. This poetry constitutes a new lyric, intersubjective and plural form that directly expresses real life experience. The transnational influence of hip-hop and slam as powerful minority art forms has combined with the reach and interactive potential of the internet to expand the scope of poetry as a mode of expression for minority subjects today, decentring top-down discourses on British cities (largely based on London) literature, culture and society.

- Abstract

- Abstract

The phenomenon of globalization has led to many globalized societies. Globalized societies are societies that have experienced and are influenced by the features of globalization. In globalization, time and space have shrunk and the world’s peoples and cultures are now more interlinked and interconnected through transportation and information communication technology which has led to the movement of human capital and transmission of ideas and cultures. Globalization has facilitated the meeting of different religions and cultures. In many societies today you now have people of different religions and cultures living/working side by side. Religious pluralism and multiculturalism are now ideological standpoints as they are now sets of beliefs of how society should be organized. This paper will hermeneutically examine these phenomena and the challenges that they present. Through analysis the paper argues that both religious pluralism and multiculturalism are facts of globalized societies not to be ignored. The paper concludes that religious pluralism and multiculturalism can be managed for harmony in society. These done globalized societies will experience more social harmony and concord.

Ur-Hamlet is Eugenio Barba’s production performed at the Elsinore castle in Denmark in 2006. Odin Teatret worked in collaboration with many actors, dancers and musicians from diverse cultures and theatrical traditions. This paper traces the relationships that Odin Teatret has established with other theatre groups in the world, their exchanges and the concept of the third theater. It analyzes the artistic practices that Odin Teatret usually applies and how the integration of actors with different Western and Eastern backgrounds was marked by their professional trajectory. There was a clear distinction between actors with diverse theatre training and also experience, and younger Western actors who took part in Odin Teatret’s workshops.

The objective of this contribution is to reflect on the informal nature of several fields of language and culture teaching (DLC in French), or rather of certain informal aspects of those fields. However, the field of « didactics » is considered formal by theorists of the informal and theorists of « didactique des langues » consider non-institutional situations as excluded from their field of research. This said, we aim in this paper for a more refined understanding of the informal sector and propose a typology in the light of the DLC. For this purpose, we rely on two asynchronous online forums that we set up as a teacher between the end of 2019 and half of the year 2020 for the benefit of FFL adult false-beginners from the Arab Open University and the Alliance Française in Jeddah, KSA. We rethink and redefine the field of the informal with regard to the notion of power in particular.

Brussels’ overwhelmingly negative depiction in the press is a frequently mentioned but little researched factor in explaining its lack of appeal as a place to live. This study examines how city life is framed in Belgian newspapers as well as how said frames resonate with broader cultural schemes that influence public perceptions. Using multiple correspondence analysis, we found that the press by and large groups concepts into two diametrically opposed frames: the first corresponding to a phobian perception of Brussels that centres on the negative aspects of city life and the second to a cosmopolitan view of the capital that focusses on its vibrant nature and other inherent advantages. Furthermore, differences between newspapers in their portrayal of life in Brussels relate more so to their orientation (elite versus popular) rather than to their language (Dutch versus French).

Abstract The world has recently witnessed a social phenomenon that has been present during the entire history of humanity, but has now taken on greater proportions and impact: the large population displacements of refugees. According to the United Nations, more than 75 million people were in this situation worldwide at the end of 2017, a figure never observed before (UNHCR, 2017). Since 1951, more than 147 countries, including Brazil, have signed the United Nations Refugee Convention, which established obligations for signatory governments to provide refugees with legal and safe working conditions. Considering this context, this study aims to investigate the perceptions of refugees of different origins regarding the processes and difficulties of integrating into Brazilian society and labor market. The processes deal with bureaucratic barriers, cultural differences, ethnic-racial issues, and language, among others. The study uses a qualitative approach consisting of eight interviews in the city of Rio de Janeiro with refugees of a variety of nationalities and both genders. The results show that these respondents perceive a gap between public policies and practices involving refugees in the workplace, and also discrimination by the population, employers, and authorities, describing a multicultural rather than an intercultural context. Despite these challenges, respondents say they intend to continue living and working in Brazil.

33. Amândoi by Liviu Rebreanu: multicultural settings and sources of suspense

- Subjects
archaisms ,detective genre ,multiculturalism ,provincial romania ,suspense ,regional words ,Language and Literature - Abstract
The article looks into the multicultural settings of Liviu Rebreanu’s novel “Amândoi” (Both) by briefly examining the representation of its main, minor or incidental characters, either intelligentsia or common people. Ethnicity, social and professional statuses are considered as elements of multiculturalism. The continuous increase of suspense, the open ending, the parody in the undertone, and the development of the intrigue in an original multicultural context are presented further on. The various rumours arising from the townspeople’s own hypotheses about the murders of the aged Dăniloiu provide the opportunity to present the detective genre, which Rebreanu introduced in Romanian literature, suggesting a disguised satire of the type. The archaisms and the regional words of the novel are laboriously registered and underlined in terms of usage, etymology and linguistic connectivity, with the purpose of showing the multicultural flavour by means of a multilingual approach. The essay indicates that all characters use archaisms and local words, notwithstanding their social status or aspirations, a detail that puts in perspective the cultural configuration of the provincial town life, which Rebreanu is very aware of.

The essay presents an overview of Jewish American prose of the second half of the 20th — first two decades of the 21st century within the context of multicultural literature of the USA. The definition of Jewish literature remains a matter of debate. The author of the essay based on the opinions of critics concludes on the criterion for assigning a writer to Jewish literature. It is the artistic embodiment of the personal Jewish experience and identity in the works of literature, the view “from inside,” the perspective of collective memory and the connection to history and culture. Jewish literature today is one of the most developed ethnic segments of multicultural American literature. Writers under study are recognized throughout the world, their works have been translated into many languages, including Russian, they are known to readers and have already become the subject of study by literary scholars. Today, Jewish American literature is represented by two generations of writers. “Senior” generation includes the authors born in the 1920s–30s who began their literary careers in the 60s when there was a generational change in national literature. “Young” generation is represented by the writers who began their literary careers in the 2000s. On the example of the works of the most famous authors of both generations, the author of the essay talks about the factors determining the specific features of Jewish American prose and its characteristic themes, problems, and motives: the search for identity and roots, the representation and rethinking of the Holocaust, ethnic stereotypes, the image of the Jewish family, and the traditions of Jewish humor. The study of the works of modern Jewish writers in the United States allows us to draw conclusions about the display of border consciousness, national and ethnic identity, and collective memory in fiction.

- Abstract

- Abstract

Citizens' perception of the presence of international institutions in Brussels remains understudied. Our study contributes to filling this gap through a survey conducted with a representative sample of Brussels residents in September 2021. The objective is to analyse the representations and practices of the local population with respect to international institutions. Our data show that there is a positive assessment of their contributions to the economy, employment, public goods, identity and culture. These benefits are nevertheless accompanied by perceived disadvantages as regards terrorist risks, integration of immigration deemed excessive and alienation in terms of identity. In conclusion, the world of international institutions seems to coexist and interact with that of ordinary Brussels residents in a relationship of acceptance marked by distance and indifference.

The paper addresses the issues of preserving cultural diversity on the example of the Chechen Republic. Cultural values play an important role in the development of education, science, cultural life of peoples and cooperation, so each state strives to preserve these values for future generations. Representatives of more than 190 peoples live in the Russian Federation; hence, preservation of cultural diversity is one of the priorities of the state cultural policy. In modern conditions, the cultural diversity of civil nations is increasing, and the peoples are seeking more and more means, including political and legal ones, to preserve and develop their integrity and cultural image. One of the main factors that indicates the state of the ethnopolitical situation and the nature of interethnic relations is the balance of ethnic forces. Owing to stabilization of the socio-political situation in Chechnya, the need for revival of multi-ethnicity as the most important factor and condition for the republic development is a priority. Chechen society includes more than 40 peoples and nationalities. There are 11 national cultural centers and 6 national cultural autonomies in the Chechen Republic. Members of these organizations are actively involved in the public life of the region, promoting traditions and culture of their ethnic group. Modern nations are culturally, religiously and politically more pluralistic than traditional communities that have maintained their unity through fundamental traditions in culture or religion. The ethnocultural policy pursued in the Chechen Republic provides the conditions for representatives of ethnic communities to satisfy their national and cultural needs, and to preserve their religious and national identities.

The trend towards internationalization is becoming increasingly important in HEI (higher education institutions ) and universities in many countries. As HEIs become more international, they are increasingly recognized as contributing to the competitiveness of its graduates. Conceptually, internationalization has long been understood as a focus on the transnational movement of individual students and scholars rather than as a strategy to influence higher education institutions and systems. The importance of internationalization in HEIs and universities has increased over the past two decades of globalization .The Internet will continue to play a significant role, opening opportunities to reach a wider global audience. Online and other forms of e-learning approaches continue to play a significant role, especially in the postCOVID_19 era. This calls for adapting some of the higher education policies to new realities of future competitiveness in higher education deliver, and to ensure the demands of the labor market especially towards digitalization trends in the realm of work are realized. This paper discusses the components of internationalizations, the rationale for embracing multiculturism in HEIs, internationalizations forms and drivers of Transnational Education (TNE) across different regions, contribution of collaborations and the Internet and contemporary modes of delivery in the growth of internationalization .

- Abstract

The article reflects on the reasons that motivated individuals from various fields in Sudbury to create the newspaper Le Nouvel-Ontarien in 1985. Topics include the newspaper aimed to provide a platform for progressive voices in the Franco-Sudbury media landscape through the conservative values of the existing French-language weekly, Le Voyageur; and tension between a vision of French Ontario as a community of destiny seeking autonomy and the utopia of multicultural Canada.

The article aims to contribute to the understanding the role of Amerindian teachers in the emergence of indigenous movements. It shows that their propensity for identity activism is based on dispositions acquired through their professional socialization within indigenist institutions. The emergence of these movements is thus a continuation of indigenist policies, rather than a break with them.

This paper analyzes public debate pertaining to a demonstration by the Toronto chapter of Black Lives Matter (BLMTO) at the city’s 2016 Pride parade. The movement’s actions, and ultimately the organization itself, have been widely condemned for disrupting the event and calling attention to anti-Black racism within the Toronto Police Service and queer spaces. A critical discourse analysis of mainstream media content reveals the emergence of three major themes repeated across Canadian news outlets in the denouncement of BLMTO. Central to this process is the myth of multiculturalism, which effectively displaces the phenomenon of racism onto previous centuries and other countries. By scrutinizing the parameters of the Canadian national imaginary, this paper reveals the ways in which anti-Black racism has become compounded by the mainstream LGBT movement. The theme of this paper is the relationship to „others“ – other civilizations and cultures in the history of Earth, and other species and different forms of life in science fiction. The analysis of Star Trek series and films shows that, despite considerable endeavor to adopt „multiculturalism“ as a principle, and despite a conscious effort to respect and celebrate diversity, „colonial narrative“ remains in force in the popular science fiction visions of the future. Fear and/or violence are typical reactions that (un)hiddenly repeats the pattern of our thinking of otherness and treatment of different ones whenever it comes to aliens, whether they are foreigners or extraterrestrials.

Habermas’s polemic with the neo-conservative intellectuals over their denial of “universal human rights”, and his debate on “Asian values” and “Western values” with the governments of the South-West Asian state since the Vienna Conference (1993) are of fundamental importance to Habermas’s conception of multiculturalism. In these debates (1995-1997) he changes his attitude towards “non-Western cultures”. He turns away from the “ethno-centric view”, according to which, there is a late or delayed appropriation of the “Lumières” among non-Western cultures compared to the West. Habermas now seems to join a certain cultural relativism and advocates for a “unification” with non-Western – “Arab-Muslim” cultures. These should therefore find “equivalents” to western-made inventions, so-called “alternative forms of modernity” paving the way for an intercultural version of the “multiple modernities” concept. This is the latest version of his multiculturalism.
