In this synthesis, I give an overview of my research activities in applied electromagnetism. Focused on antenna behavioral modeling, my first contributions aimed at proposing a bridge between numerical simulation and experimental characterization of antennas. In a second time, I address my contributions in the theme of near-field antenna characterization through the matrix method for the far-field radiation pattern calculation. These experimental activities are at the origin of several national and international collaborations. Finally, I discuss my contributions on microwave imaging applied to ground probing radar. I present the conclusions of the modeling of the direct problem by the DGTD method and the resolution of the inverse problem by Linear Sampling Method. The adopted applications are the detection of tree root systems (architecture) and the location of underground cables in real life situations. The research work on near-surface imagery is multidisciplinary and constitutes the point of convergence of my previous activities including the antenna developments dedicated to ground radar., Dans ce travail de synthèse, je donne un aperçu de mes activités de recherche en électromagnétisme appliqué. Axées sur la modélisation comportementale, mes premières contributions visaient à proposer une passerelle entre la simulation numérique et la caractérisation expérimentale des antennes. Dans un deuxième temps, j’évoque mes apports dans le thème de la caractérisation d’antennes en champ proche à travers la méthode matricielle pour le calcul du champ lointain. Cette activité expérimentale est à l’origine de plusieurs collaborations nationales et internationales. Enfin, je développe mes travaux sur l’imagerie micro-onde appliquée au radar de sol. J’y présente les conclusions de la modélisation du problème direct par la méthode DGTD et la résolution du problème inverse par Linear Sampling Method. Les applications étudiées sont la détection des systèmes racinaires des arbres et la localisation de câbles souterrains en situation réelle. Les travaux de recherche sur l’imagerie du proche sous-sol sont pluridisciplinaires et constituent le point de convergence de mes activités précédentes y compris les développements antennaires dédiés au radar de sol.

This work is focused on the development of a compressive technique applied to the simplification of microwave imaging systems. This principle is based on the study of passive devices able to compress transmitted and received waves, allowing for the reduction of the hardware complexity required by radar systems. This approach exploits the modal diversity in the developed components, making it compatible with ultra wide bandwidth. Several proofs of concept are presented using different passive devices, allowing this technique to be adapted to a large variety of architectures and bandwidths.; Ces travaux portent sur le développement d'une technique de compression appliquée à la simplification des systèmes d'imagerie dans le domaine microonde. Cette approche repose sur le développement de composants passifs capables de compresser les ondes émises et reçues, autorisant ainsi une réduction du nombre de modules actifs nécessaires au fonctionnement de certaines architectures de radars. Ce principe est basé sur l'exploitation de la diversité modale présente dans les composants développés, le rendant compatible avec l'utilisation de très larges bandes passantes. Plusieurs preuves de concept sont réalisées au moyen de différents composants étudiés dans cet ouvrage, permettant d'adapter cette technique à de nombreuses spécifications d'architectures et de bandes passantes.

This work concerns the problem of microwave tomography for application to biomedical imaging. The aim is to retreive both permittivity and conductivity of an unknown object from measurements of the scattered field that results from its interaction with a known interrogating wave. Such a problem is said to be inverse opposed to the associated forward problem that consists in calculating the scattered field while the interrogating wave and the object are known. The resolution of the inverse problem requires the prior construction of the associated forward model. This latter is based on an integral representation of the electric field resulting in two coupled integral equations whose discrete counterparts are obtained by means of the method of moments.Regarding the inverse problem, in addition to the fact that the physical equations involved in the forward modeling make it nonlinear, it is also mathematically ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard, which means that the conditions of existence, uniqueness and stability of the solution are not simultaneously guaranteed. Hence, solving this problem requires its prior regularization which usually involves the introduction of a priori information on the sought solution. This resolution is done here in a Bayesian probabilistic framework where we introduced a priori knowledge appropriate to the sought object by considering it to be composed of a finite number of homogeneous materials distributed in compact and homogeneous regions. This information is introduced through a "Gauss-Markov-Potts" model. In addition, the Bayesian computation gives the posterior distribution of all the unknowns, knowing the a priori and the object. We proceed then to identify the posterior estimators via variational approximation methods and thereby to reconstruct the image of the desired object.The main contributions of this work are methodological and algorithmic. They are illustrated by an application of microwave imaging to breast cancer detection. The latter is in itself a very important and original aspect of the thesis. Indeed, the detection of breast cancer using microwave imaging is a very interesting alternative to X-ray mammography, but it is still at an exploratory stage.; Ce travail concerne l'imagerie micro-onde en vue d'application à l'imagerie biomédicale. Cette technique d'imagerie a pour objectif de retrouver la distribution des propriétés diélectriques internes (permittivité diélectrique et conductivité) d'un objet inconnu illuminé par une onde interrogatrice connue à partir des mesures du champ électrique dit diffracté résultant de leur interaction. Un tel problème constitue un problème dit inverse par opposition au problème direct associé qui consiste à calculer le champ diffracté, l'onde interrogatrice et l'objet étant alors connus.La résolution du problème inverse nécessite la construction préalable du modèle direct associé. Celui-ci est ici basé sur une représentation intégrale de domaine des champs électriques donnant naissance à deux équations intégrales couplées dont les contreparties discrètes sont obtenues à l'aide de la méthode des moments. En ce qui concerne le problème inverse, hormis le fait que les équations physiques qui interviennent dans sa modélisation directe le rendent non-linéaire, il est également mathématiquement mal posé au sens de Hadamard, ce qui signifie que les conditions d'existence, d'unicité et de stabilité de la solution ne sont pas simultanément garanties. La résolution d'un tel problème nécessite sa régularisation préalable qui consiste généralement en l'introduction d'information a priori sur la solution recherchée. Cette résolution est effectuée, ici, dans un cadre probabiliste bayésien où l'on introduit une connaissance a priori adaptée à l'objet sous test et qui consiste à considérer ce dernier comme étant composé d'un nombre fini de matériaux homogènes distribués dans des régions compactes. Cet information est introduite par le biais d'un modèle de « Gauss-Markov-Potts ». De plus, le calcul bayésien nous donne la distribution a posteriori de toutes les inconnues connaissant l'a priori et l'objet. On s'attache ensuite à déterminer les estimateurs a posteriori via des méthodes d'approximation variationnelles et à reconstruire ainsi l'image de l'objet recherché. Les principales contributions de ce travail sont d'ordre méthodologique et algorithmique. Elles sont illustrées par une application de l'imagerie micro-onde à la détection du cancer du sein. Cette dernière constitue en soi un point très important et original de la thèse. En effet, la détection du cancer su sein en imagerie micro-onde est une alternative très intéressante à la mammographie par rayons X, mais n'en est encore qu'à un stade exploratoire.

In this work, we are interested in scattering imaging in 2D and 3D configurations, where our objective is to reconstruct an image (contrast function) of an unknown object using measurements of the scattered field that results from the interaction between the unknown object and a known incident field whose propagation direction and frequency can be varied. The difficulty of this problem lies in the non-linearity of the forward model and in the ill-posed nature of the inverse problem which requires the introduction of prior information (regularization). For this purpose, we use a Bayesian approach with a joint estimation of the object contrast, currents induced inside the objects and other model parameters. The forward continuous model is described by two coupled integral equations. The discrete counterparts of the latter are obtained by means of the method of moments (MoM). For the inversion, the Bayesian approach allows us to model our knowledge about the object in a probabilistic way. For the given applications, the object under test is known to be composed of a finite number of materials, which implies that the desired image consists of a finite number of compact homogeneous regions. This justifies the choice of a prior model based upon a mixture of Gaussian with a hidden Markovian variable that represents the label of the regions. The nonlinear nature of the forward model and the use of this prior leads to joint posterior estimators which are intractable. Therefore, an approximation of the posterior distribution is needed. Two approaches are possible : a numerical approach, for example MCMC, and an analytical approach as the variational Bayesian approach. We have tested both approaches and both of them yield very good reconstruction results compared to classical methods. However, the variational Bayesian approach allows a much faster reconstruction as compared to the MCMC stochastic sampling method.; Dans ce travail, nous nous intéressons à l'imagerie de diffraction dans des configurations à deux ou trois dimensions avec pour objectif la reconstruction d'une image (fonction contraste) d'un objet inconnu à l'aide de plusieurs mesures du champ qu'il diffracte. Ce champ résulte de l'interaction entre l'objet et un champ incident connu dont la direction de propagation et la fréquence peuvent varier. La difficulté de ce problème réside dans la non-linéarité du modèle direct et le caractère mal posé du problème inverse qui nécessite l'introduction d'une information a priori (régularisation). Pour cela, nous utilisons une approche bayésienne avec une estimation conjointe du contraste de l'objet, des courants induits et des autres paramètres du modèle. Le modèle direct est décrit par deux équations intégrales couplées exprimant les champs électriques observé et existant à l'intérieur de l'objet, dont les versions discrètes sont obtenues à l'aide de la méthode des moments. Pour l'inversion, l'approche bayésienne permet de modéliser notre connaissance a priori sur l'objet sous forme probabiliste. Les objets que nous étudions ici sont connus pour être constitués d'un nombre fini de matériaux homogènes répartis en régions compactes. Cette information a priori est introduite dans l'algorithme d'inversion à l'aide d'un mélange de gaussiennes, où chaque gaussienne représente une classe de matériaux, tandis que la compacité des régions est prise en compte au travers d'un modèle de Markov caché. La nature non linéaire du modèle direct et l'utilisation de cet a priori nous amènent à des estimateurs qui n'ont pas de formes explicites. Une approximation est donc nécessaire et deux voies sont possibles pour cela: une approche numérique, par exemple MCMC, et une approche analytique comme l'approche bayésienne variationnelle. Nous avons testé ces deux approches qui ont donné de bons résultats de reconstruction par rapport aux méthodes classiques. Cependant, l'approche bayésienne variationnelle permet de gagner énormément en temps de calcul par rapport à la méthode MCMC.

Les problèmes inverses se retrouvent dans de nombreux domaines de la physique. Dans ce manuscrit, deux thématiqes seront ainsi évoquées. La première concerne la diagraphie différée, qui est une étape-clé de la prospection pétrolière. La mise en place de schémas numériques et algorithmiques est explicitée ainsi que les difficultés inhérentes associées. Le deuxième axe de recherche concerne plus particulièrement les problèmes inverses de diffraction en électromagnétisme. Différents algorithmes d'inversion ont été proposés et validés par des confrontations expérimentales. Le lien fort entre conception et exploitation d'instruments d'imagerie par diffraction sera également évoqué.

Soil moisture information is a key variable for describing water and energy exchanges at the plant root/surface/air interface. Intensive effort has been undertaken to provide non-invasive geophysical methods, in particular using microwave sensors. Indeed, the real and imaginary part of the soil dielectric constant is linked to its volumetric water content as well as its salinity. The goal of the current project is to demonstrate the potentiality of a non-invasive microwave imaging system for water content monitoring. The interaction between an electromagnetic wave and a target of the order of a wavelength results in a scattered wave, which depends on the target properties. The measurement of this field will allow to retrieve information about the scatterer, in particular its dielectric permittivity. This study will exploits the experimental circular scanner currently developed at Institut Fresnel which presents a simplified 2D configuration adequate for monoliths monitoring. Modelling and imaging numerical tools have been specifically created for such application. In particular, performing quantitative microwave imaging is a nonlinear ill-posed problem. Moreover, the measured fields are perturbed with noise. Therefore, all available a-priori information are of great importance to stabilize the solution. To this hand, we have implemented a Zernike polynomials representation and worked on the calibration procedure. The reconstructed permittivity maps obtained from experimental measured fields will be presented and discussed. We have also perform some theoretical studies based on the properties of the scattering operator, in order to gain quantitative ideas on the a priori information which are relevant to consider as well as the amount of information which were available., L'évaluation de la teneur en eau est actuellement un objectif important pour la caractérisation des sols et la compréhension des mécanismes liés au transfert hydrique et à l'absorption racinaire. Il existe un lien entre les variations de la teneur en eau et la permittivité des sols. L'objectif de ces travaux est d'exploiter ce couplage pour définir un protocole d'imagerie active micro-onde d'un monolithe. En effet, lorsqu'une onde électromagnétique rencontre un objet ayant des dimensions caractéristiques de l'ordre de sa longueur d'onde, celle-ci après interactions, va induire un courant qui à son tour générera un champ électromagnétique diffracté. La mesure de ce champ va permettre de revenir aux informations relatives à l'objet, en particulier sa permittivité. Nous nous appuierons ici sur un système de mesure hyperfréquence constitué d'une cavité métallique cylindrique. Il a donc fallu mettre au point des outils numériques de modélisation et d'imagerie de permettant de décrire le phénomène de diffraction dans un tel environnement. L'imagerie micro-onde quantitative est un problème inverse non-linéaire mal posé. De plus, les mesures du champ électromagnétique sont perturbées, ce qui va induire de l'instabilité dans le problème inverse. C'est pourquoi il est nécessaire de mettre en place un algorithme itératif avec ajout d'informations a priori (polynômes de Zernike) pour obtenir une solution stabilisée. Des reconstructions obtenues à partir de champ mesurés sur différents fantômes sont discutées. De plus, les informations fournies par l'étude du comportement de l'opérateur de diffraction renseignent sur la quantité de données accessibles et les informations a priori qui peuvent être légitimes de considérer.

La radiométrie ou thermographie microonde (T.M.O.) permet de réaliser des investigations thermologiques non invasives sur les tissus vivants. Elle intéresse des applications liées au diagnostic médical et au contrôle de température en hyperthermie. Nous faisons un bilan des recherches actuelles dans ce domaine. L'état d'avancement de nos travaux nous a permis de mettre au point une méthode d'imagerie thermique microonde (I.T.M.O.) haute résolution. L'interprétation des signaux radiométriques a pour but de réaliser une thermométrie quantitative en volume : nous montrons comment notre système d'imagerie permet de traiter le cas de structures thermogènes de forme compacte.
