Functional perovskite oxides are of great interest for fundamental and applied research thanks to the numerous physical properties and inherent mechanisms they display. With the maturation of thin film deposition techniques, research teams are able to reproduce oxide films and nanostructures of great crystalline quality with some of the most remarkable properties found in physics, a state leading now to upper-level thoughts like their ability to fulfill industrial needs. This thesis work is an answer to some of the problematics that arise when considering the oxide transition from the research to the industrial world, by focusing on their integration for micromechanical devices (MEMS) such as sensors. In order to ease the access to MEMS manufacturing, it is of importance to allow the deposition of thin oxide films on semiconductor substrates. A first study show that these access bridges can be crossed when using appropriate buffer layers such as SrTiO3 deposited on Silicon or gallium arsenide – produced in close collaboration with INL by Molecular Beam Epitaxy - and yttria-stabilized zirconia directly grown on silicon by pulsed laser deposition, which adapts the surface properties of the substrate to perovksite-based materials. Formation of thin epitaxial and monocristalline films of functional oxides is thus allowed on such buffer layers. As an example, characterization of two mixed-valence manganites La0.80Ba0.20MnO3 and La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 demonstrates that both materials are of excellent crystalline quality on these semiconducting substrates and that their physical characteristics match the one found on classical oxide substrates like SrTiO3. Stress evolution in thin films, which has a major effect in epitaxial materials, is then addressed to quantify its impact on oxide microstructure viability. This work gives an identification of the most significant factors favoring stress generation in the case of the films we produced. Then, based on the deformation measurement of free-standing cantilevers made of manganites on pseudo-substrates, and with the support of appropriate analytical models, a new state of equilibrium is established, giving new information about the evolution of static stress from deposition to MEMS device manufacturing. Solutions to manage their reproducibility is then studied. From another perspective, free-standing microstructures made of monocristaline manganites were used to display the effect of dynamical strain on their electrical resistivity (piezoresistivity) and their inherent structures.Finally, a specific example of the capabilities of reproducible free-standing microbridges made of manganites is presented through the conception of a pressure gauge based on Pirani effect. Indeed, it is shown that the abrupt resistivity change this material exhibits near their metal-to-insulating transition creates high temperature coefficients in standard application environments that can be taken as an advantage to improve the sensibility and power consumption of such gauges whose development had significantly slowed down over the past years. A set of improvements on their sensitivity range and their signal acquisition is also presented. Combined to a specific and innovative package, it is also demonstrated that Pirani gauge capabilities can be enhanced and that the complete devices fulfill embedded application requirements., Les oxydes sont des matériaux complexes possédant une physique riche et toujours au centre de nombreuses recherches. Parmi ces oxydes, les manganites ont retenu notre attention car ils présentent une transition métal-isolant abrupte en température, générant un très fort coefficient en température en conditions d’environnement standards. L’objectif de ce travail est de démontrer que ce fort coefficient peut être exploité pour l’amélioration des performances des jauges de pression de type Pirani qui subissent un certain essoufflement dans leur développement. La voie menant à l’aboutissement d’une telle jauge à base d’oxydes pose en revanche un certain nombre de limites technologiques à lever et auxquelles nous avons répondu. La première de ces limites concerne l’intégration des oxydes monocristallins sur silicium, que nous avons reproduite et étendue au cas des substrats de type SOI et GaAs. Nos procédés proposent de passer par deux techniques, l’épitaxie par jets moléculaire et l’ablation laser, pour assurer une croissance optimale de nos films sur ces substrats et d’assurer la reproductibilité de leur réponse en température, notamment la position de leur température de transition en accord avec l’état de l’art. L’épitaxie de ces oxydes génère un niveau de contrainte non négligeable qui n’a jamais été mesuré. En concevant divers dispositifs autosupportés, et en s’appuyant sur les considérations théoriques et des modélisations par éléments finis, nous avons pu quantifier la relaxation de cette contrainte importante et assurer près de 100% de reproductibilité des systèmes suspendus. Ces mêmes systèmes nous permettent de caractériser pour la première fois le facteur de jauge des manganites monocristallines par l’application d’une contrainte contrôlée par nanoindentation. Il est également démontré qu’ils constituent des jauges de pression Pirani à la sensibilité accrue de deux ordres de grandeur pour une consommation en puissance réduite. Des solutions permettant d’améliorer l’ensemble des aspects de ces jauges sont étudiées.

NdNiO3 and SmxCa1-xMnO3 perovskites thin films were synthesized by magnetron co-sputtering process and the thermochromic properties have been studied in the infrared range. At first, the study of the NdNiO3 nickelate has established the timeliness to synthesise the perovskite phase using a subsequent annealing crystallisation in air at moderate temperature (550°C). We have demonstrated a competitive crystallisation between the thermochromic orthorhombic phase and a non-thermochromic rhombohedral phase largely influenced by experimental parameters: deposition pressure, layer thickness, annealing temperature... The presence of these two phases allowed to clarify more precisely the oxidation mechanisms involved during the deposition process and the reduction mechanisms occurring during the heat treatment. At the same time, the SmxCa1-xMnO3 system was synthesised also as thin films. The first step includes developing the experimental conditions to obtain stoichiometric films using two separate targets. After structural analyses (SEM, XRD), the electrical and optical behaviours of films were analysed using the four probe configuration and the FTIR spectroscopy versus temperature respectively. As result, the metal-insulator transition of the Sm0,5Ca0,5MnO3 compound is close to the room temperature and the film shows an interesting optical contrast in the near and mid-infrared ranges. The optical transmittance measurements in the visible-near infrared range were used to evaluate the optical gap dependence with temperature. At room temperature, the optical gap is close to 0.7 eV. Le manganite SmxCa1-xMnO3 est donc un bon candidat pour la régulation thermique et la furtivité infrarouge

The studies presented in this manuscript deal with the synthesis and characterization of ferromagnetic perovskite oxides. Four material systems have been described in this work ( Pr0.6-xEuxSr0.4MnO3 et Pr0.6-xErxSr0.4MnO3 ) et lanthanum ( La0.6Sr0.2Ba0.2-x□xMnO3 et (La0.6Sr0.2Ba0.2MnO3)1-x /(Co2O3)x ) . Our samples have been synthesized using the solid-state reaction method at high temperatures. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction patterns using Fullprof program shows that all our samples are single phase and crystallize in the distorted structures. Magnetic measurements show that all our samples exhibit a paramagnetic–ferromagnetic transition with decreasing temperature. The Curie Temperature TC shifts to lower values with increasing substitution in the Pr0.6-x(Eu or Er)xMnO3 system and under the effect of barium deficiency in the La0.6Sr0.2Ba0.2-x□xMnO3 system. From the magnetization isotherms at different temperatures, magnetic entropy change ∆Sm and relative cooling power RCP have been evaluated. By means of the connection between the specific heat and the magnetization was determined the variation of the specific heat ΔCp in these samples using the results ΔSm. Our results confirm that the characteristic values of the magnetocaloric effect are very sensitive to the applied magnetic field, where the study of their dependence on magnetic field has a very great interest. For fixed temperatures, the magnetic field dependence of magnetic entropy change ∆Sm is accounted for by the n exponent, which may be derived by a numerical fitting to the formula ∆Sm ~ a (µ0H)n where a is a constant. This study allows one hand, identify materials that behave similarly and ways to improve these properties and it is, on the other hand, a useful tool to extrapolate these properties under conditions not accessible in the laboratory., Les travaux présentés dans ce manuscrit consistent à élaborer par la méthode céramique des oxydes ferromagnétiques de type pérovskite et à étudier leurs propriétés physiques (structurales, magnétiques, magnétocaloriques..). Nous avons commencé ce travail par la synthèse de séries de manganites à base de praséodyme ( Pr0.6-xEuxSr0.4MnO3 et Pr0.6-xErxSr0.4MnO3 ) et de lanthane ( La0.6Sr0.2Ba0.2-x□xMnO3 et (La0.6Sr0.2Ba0.2MnO3)1-x /(Co2O3)x ) en utilisant la méthode solide-solide à haute température. Les échantillons élaborés ont été caractérisés par diffractométrie de poudre RX. Les diffractogrammes obtenues ont été affinés par la méthode Rietveld en utilisant le logiciel Fullprof. L'affinement structural a montré que les manganites synthétisés se présentent sous forme de phases pures avec des raies fines et intenses sans phases parasites et cristallisent dans des structures déformées.Des mesures magnétiques (M(T) et M(H)) ont permis d'obtenir des informations sur le comportement magnétique à basse température, les transitions magnétiques et l'évaluation de l'aimantation à saturation. L'aimantation en fonction de la température montre que ces manganites présentent des transitions ferromagnétiques - paramagnétiques et que leurs températures de Curie diminuent sous l'effet de la substitution dans le cas des composés à base du praséodyme et sous l'effet de l'introduction des lacunes dans le système basé sur le lanthane. Les isothermes M (H) confirment le comportement ferromagnétique à basses températures des échantillons étudiés. A partir de ces mesures et en utilisant les relations de Maxwell, on a déterminé les variations d'entropie magnétique ∆Sm et on a évalué l'effet magnétocalorique présent dans ces matériaux. Via la connexion entre la chaleur spécifique et l'aimantation, on a déterminé la variation de la chaleur spécifique ∆Cp dans tous ces échantillons en exploitant les résultats ∆Sm. Nos résultats confirment que les grandeurs caractéristiques de l'effet magnétocalorique sont très sensibles au champ magnétique appliqué, d'où l'étude de leur dépendance en champ magnétique présente un très grand intérêt. Cette dépendance en champ magnétique de la variation d'entropie magnétique peut être exprimée selon une loi de puissance de type ∆Sm ~ a (µ0H)n où n est appelé exposant local. Cette étude permet donc d'une part, d'identifier les matériaux qui se comportent de façon similaire et les voies d'amélioration de ces propriétés et elle constitue, d'autre part, un outil intéressant permettant d'extrapoler ces propriétés dans des conditions non accessibles au laboratoire.

This thesis reports on the study of several materials -mainly oxides- with the aim of applications in magnetic refrigeration (MR). Four main aspects were addressed: (1) Research of materials with high magnetocaloric effect (MCE), (2) MCE physics and its experimental characterizations, (3) production of material for direct tests in a MR device at room temperature, and (4) additional studies beyond the scope of MR. (1) The A-site ordering in manganites (R1-xAExMnO3) or their incorporation in super-lattices were found to be new ways to adjust the MCE around room temperature. As an example of a first-order transition (FOT), we investigated the case of Eu0.58Sr0.42MnO3 which led to an intense MCE, as expected. Significant MCEs were also measured around the second-order ferrimagnetic transition in Mn3O4, and around a spin and valence states transition in Pr0.49Sm0.21Ca0.3CoO3. The existence of giant MCE was confirmed in the Heusler alloy Ni45Co5Mn37.5In12.5 by heat capacity measurements. (2) Some controversies about the MCE determination by magnetic and calorimetric methods were addressed in detail. Special attention was paid to the case of FOTs when they exhibit phenomena such as phase separation and/or magneto-thermal history. (3) Two systems (La1-xKxMnO3 and Pr1-xSrxMnO3) were investigated for applications at room temperature. Preliminary results are reported on a regenerator constituted of Pr0.65Sr0.35MnO3 plates. (4) Peculiar phenomena encountered in Mn3O4 (a new transition below TC), in Pr0.49Sm0.21Ca0.3CoO3 (a coupling between valence and spin states transitions) or Eu0.58Sr0.42MnO3 (spin-glass state) were the subject of dedicated studies.; Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude de différents matériaux -en priorité des oxydes- pour la réfrigération magnétique (RM). Les travaux se sont articulés autour de quatre axes : (1) la recherche de matériaux à fort effet magnétocalorique (EMC), (2) la physique de l'EMC et ses caractérisations, (3) la production de matériau pour des tests directs à l'ambiante, et (4) quelques prolongements hors du cadre de la RM. (1) La mise en ordre du site A des manganites (R1-xAExMnO3) ou leur utilisation dans des superréseaux se sont révélées être de nouveaux modes d'ajustement de l'EMC autour de la température ambiante. Autour d'une transition de premier ordre (TPO), il a été observé un EMC intense dans Eu0.58Sr0.42MnO3. Des EMC significatifs ont aussi été mesurés autour d'une transition ferrimagnétique dans Mn3O4, ou autour d'une transition inédite de spin et de valence dans Pr0.49Sm0.21Ca0.3CoO3. L'existence d'un EMC géant a été confirmée dans Ni45Co5Mn37.5In12.5 par mesures de capacité calorifique. (2) Des questions sur la détermination de l'EMC par les méthodes magnétiques mais aussi calorimétriques ont fait l'objet d'études détaillées, en particulier dans le cas des TPO impliquant des phénomènes de séparation de phases et d'histoire magnéto-thermique. (3) Deux systèmes La1-xKxMnO3 et Pr1-xSrxMnO3 ont été étudiés pour des applications à l'ambiante. Des premiers résultats sont rapportés sur un régénérateur en plaques de Pr0.65Sr0.35MnO3. (4) Des phénomènes spécifiques dans Mn3O4 (nouvelle transition en dessous de Tc), dans Pr0.49Sm0.21Ca0.3CoO3 (transition couplée de valence et de spin) ou dans Eu0.58Sr0.42MnO3 (état verre de spin) ont fait l'objet d'études complémentaires.

The aim of this work was to realize a systematic study of the electronic and magnetic structure of Ca half-doped manganite family: Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (Ln=REE). In particular, we focused our attention on charge ordering (CO) and orbital ordering (OO) phenomena present in manganites. We derived a microscopic model of nuclear and magnetic structure using both neutron powder diffraction (NPD) techniques and ab-initio calculations in order to compare experimental results and numerical models and to understand the role of chemical and magnetic in-homogeneity in our systems. The change of the electronic and spin state of the transition metal by doping, corresponds to a structural modification of the coordination polyhedron geometry of the atoms around the transition metal, inducing cooperative structural changes. In contrast with this order induced by doping, an intrinsic chemical disorder is associated with the doping element on the A site of the perovskite (general formula ABO3) on which the trivalent (RE3+) and divalent ions (Ca2+) reside. This disorder is due to the difference of the ionic radius and chemical affinity between the ions. In order to study systematically the effect of the A site substitution and the relation between the structural properties and the macroscopic magnetic properties, several samples have been synthesized and characterized by macroscopic magnetic measurements. Neutron diffraction is a fundamental step towards understanding the relation between the structural and macroscopic properties. The resulting structures represent a good starting point for ab-initio calculations in the study of magnetic structure and CO/OO phenomena. Important concepts and models are described: Jahn-Teller effect, double and super-exchange interaction and the Zener polarons model. The macroscopic magnetic properties have been measured versus temperature by using a SQUID magnetometer. The principal microscopic technique used for this thesis was NPD. The technique and the layout of the instruments - D20 and D1A at the Institute Laue Langevin, Grenoble - are described together with details of the Rietveld method used to refine the diffraction data. Experimental results from the systematic study of the Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb and Lu) manganites, are presented, with a description of sample preparation. The magnetic susceptibility, measured up to 530 K for our samples, presents a broad peak at high temperatures corresponding to the onset of the CO (TCO). From these results we define the nature of the magnetic correlations above and below TCO in the framework of the Zener polarons model. We also present the details of the nuclear and magnetic structure for all samples versus temperature, analyzing the distortions due to the doping and the effect of the ionic radius of the cations. All our samples have a pseudo-CE magnetic configuration at the lowest temperatures, corresponding to a CE-type ground state with canting. We describe the ab-initio method using the density functional theory (DFT), that have been used to model the Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 series. We present DFT and we discuss the most important features (spin polarization), approximations (pseudo-potentials and exchange-correlation functional) and (Hubbard) corrections used in this work, including a presentation of the VASP code used for the DFT calculations, with the corresponding input files. These calculations have been performed to confirm our experimental results and to access other significant quantities such as the electronic density of states. The computational approach has been tested on two pure systems: CaMnO3 and NdMnO3. Two half-doped systems have been chosen with Ln=Nd and Lu. The first because the La and Pr compounds were already studied (Picozzi, Anisimov) so we continued the series with the Nd system, and the Lu has the smallest ionic radius in the lanthanides series, its 4f shell is full and Lu is therefore comparable with La.; Le but de ce travail était de réaliser une étude systématique de la structure électronique et magnétique de la famille des manganites semi-dopés du Ca: Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (Ln=REE). Nous avons focalisé notre attention sur l'ordre de charge (CO) et l'ordre orbital (OO) présents dans les manganites. Nous avons dérivé un modèle microscopique de structure nucléaire et magnétique à partir de la diffraction neutronique sur les poudres (NPD) et de calculs ab-initio afin de comparer les résultats expérimentaux et les modèles numériques et comprendre ainsi le rôle de l'inhomogénéité chimique et magnétique dans ces systèmes. La modification de l'état de spin électronique et du métal de transition par le dopage correspond à une modification structurale de la géométrie du polyèdre de coordination des atomes autour du métal de transition, induisant des changements structurels de coopération. En contraste avec l'ordre par le dopage chimique, un désordre chimique intrinsèque est associé à l'élément de dopage sur le site A du perovskite (formule générale ABO3) où sont placés les ions trivalents (RE3+) et bivalents (Ca2+). Ceci est dû à la différence de rayon ionique et d'affinité chimique entre ces ions. Afin d'étudier systématiquement l'effet de la substitution au niveau du site A et la relation entre les propriétés structurales et magnétiques, plusieurs échantillons ont été caractérisés. Les résultats de NPD sont une étape fondamentale vers la compréhension de la relation entre les propriétés structurales et magnétique et sont une source de motivation pour l'étude de la structure magnétique et des phénomènes de CO/OO par des simulations ab-initio. L'effet Jahn-Teller, les interactions de double- et super-échange, et le modèle de Zener seront introduits. Les propriétés magnétiques macroscopiques ont été mesurées en fonction de la température á l'aide d'un SQUID. La technique microscopique principale utilisée pour cette étude a été la NPD. Les instruments utilisés à l'institut Laue Langevin à Grenoble, D20 et D1A, et la méthode de Rietveld utilisée pour affiner les données expérimentales et en extraire les informations structurales seront décrits. Les résultats expérimentaux correspondant à l'étude systématique sur les échantillons de manganites de Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb and Lu) et une description de leur préparation seront présentés. La susceptibilité magnétique mesurée jusqu'à 530 K présente un pic large à températures élevées correspondant à la température de CO (TCO). Nous définissons la nature des corrélations magnétiques au-dessus et en-dessous de TCO dans le cadre du modèle des polarons de Zener. Nous présentons la structure nucléaire et magnétique pour tous les échantillons en fonction de la température et les déformations dues au dopage et à l'effet du rayon ionique. Tous nos systèmes ont une configuration magnétique de type pseudo-CE à la plus basse température correspondant à un état de type CE avec un effet de canting. Nous décrirons les calculs ab-initio pour modéliser notre série : le programme VASP, utilisé pour les calculs, la théorie DFT, les approximations faite, comme le fonctionnelle d'échange-corrélation (GGA-PBE), la correction d'Hubbard (GGA+U) seront présentée. Les calculs ont été effectués pour confirmer les résultats expérimentaux et pour accéder à d'autres quantités significatives comme la densité d'états électroniques. Les simulations ont été effectuées avec la DFT spin-polarisée, le GGA-PBE, et la GGA+U, pour considérer la corrélation électronique forte. Nous avons choisi deux systèmes purs: CaMnO3 et NdMnO3. Deux systèmes semi-dopés (Ln=Nd et Lu), ont été considérés, parce que les composés avec le La et le Pr ont été déjà étudié (Picozzi, Anisimov), et nous suivons la série avec Ln=Nd, et l’outre parce que le Lu, à l'instar de La, est saturé au niveau de ses orbitales 4f et qu'il présente de surcroit le plus petit rayon ionique dans la série de lanthanides.

Four main aspects were addressed: (1) Research of materials with high magnetocaloric effect (MCE), (2) MCE physics and its experimental characterizations, (3) production of material for direct tests in a MR device at room temperature, and (4) additional studies beyond the scope of MR. (1) The A-site ordering in manganites (R1-xAExMnO3) or their incorporation in super-lattices were found to be new ways to adjust the MCE around room temperature. As an example of a first-order transition (FOT), we investigated the case of Eu0.58Sr0.42MnO3 which led to an intense MCE, as expected. Significant MCEs were also measured around the second-order ferrimagnetic transition in Mn3O4, and around a spin and valence states transition in Pr0.49Sm0.21Ca0.3CoO3. The existence of giant MCE was confirmed in the Heusler alloy Ni45Co5Mn37.5In12.5 by heat capacity measurements. (2) Some controversies about the MCE determination by magnetic and calorimetric methods were addressed in detail. Special attention was paid to the case of FOTs when they exhibit phenomena such as phase separation and/or magneto-thermal history. (3) Two systems (La1-xKxMnO3 and Pr1-xSrxMnO3) were investigated for applications at room temperature. Preliminary results are reported on a regenerator constituted of Pr0.65Sr0.35MnO3 plates. (4) Peculiar phenomena encountered in Mn3O4 (a new transition below TC), in Pr0.49Sm0.21Ca0.3CoO3 (a coupling between valence and spin states transitions) or Eu0.58Sr0.42MnO3 (spin-glass state) were the subject of dedicated studies., Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude de différents matériaux -en priorité des oxydes- pour la réfrigération magnétique (RM). Les travaux se sont articulés autour de quatre axes : (1) la recherche de matériaux à fort effet magnétocalorique (EMC), (2) la physique de l'EMC et ses caractérisations, (3) la production de matériau pour des tests directs à l'ambiante, et (4) quelques prolongements hors du cadre de la RM. (1) La mise en ordre du site A des manganites (R1-xAExMnO3) ou leur utilisation dans des superréseaux se sont révélées être de nouveaux modes d'ajustement de l'EMC autour de la température ambiante. Autour d'une transition de premier ordre (TPO), il a été observé un EMC intense dans Eu0.58Sr0.42MnO3. Des EMC significatifs ont aussi été mesurés autour d'une transition ferrimagnétique dans Mn3O4, ou autour d'une transition inédite de spin et de valence dans Pr0.49Sm0.21Ca0.3CoO3. L'existence d'un EMC géant a été confirmée dans Ni45Co5Mn37.5In12.5 par mesures de capacité calorifique. (2) Des questions sur la détermination de l'EMC par les méthodes magnétiques mais aussi calorimétriques ont fait l'objet d'études détaillées, en particulier dans le cas des TPO impliquant des phénomènes de séparation de phases et d'histoire magnéto-thermique. (3) Deux systèmes La1-xKxMnO3 et Pr1-xSrxMnO3 ont été étudiés pour des applications à l'ambiante. Des premiers résultats sont rapportés sur un régénérateur en plaques de Pr0.65Sr0.35MnO3. (4) Des phénomènes spécifiques dans Mn3O4 (nouvelle transition en dessous de Tc), dans Pr0.49Sm0.21Ca0.3CoO3 (transition couplée de valence et de spin) ou dans Eu0.58Sr0.42MnO3 (état verre de spin) ont fait l'objet d'études complémentaires.

The aim of this work was to realize a systematic study of the electronic and magnetic structure of Ca half-doped manganite family: Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (Ln=REE). In particular, we focused our attention on charge ordering (CO) and orbital ordering (OO) phenomena present in manganites. We derived a microscopic model of nuclear and magnetic structure using both neutron powder diffraction (NPD) techniques and ab-initio calculations in order to compare experimental results and numerical models and to understand the role of chemical and magnetic in-homogeneity in our systems. The change of the electronic and spin state of the transition metal by doping, corresponds to a structural modification of the coordination polyhedron geometry of the atoms around the transition metal, inducing cooperative structural changes. In contrast with this order induced by doping, an intrinsic chemical disorder is associated with the doping element on the A site of the perovskite (general formula ABO3) on which the trivalent (RE3+) and divalent ions (Ca2+) reside. This disorder is due to the difference of the ionic radius and chemical affinity between the ions. In order to study systematically the effect of the A site substitution and the relation between the structural properties and the macroscopic magnetic properties, several samples have been synthesized and characterized by macroscopic magnetic measurements. Neutron diffraction is a fundamental step towards understanding the relation between the structural and macroscopic properties. The resulting structures represent a good starting point for ab-initio calculations in the study of magnetic structure and CO/OO phenomena. Important concepts and models are described: Jahn-Teller effect, double and super-exchange interaction and the Zener polarons model. The macroscopic magnetic properties have been measured versus temperature by using a SQUID magnetometer. The principal microscopic technique used for this thesis was NPD. The technique and the layout of the instruments - D20 and D1A at the Institute Laue Langevin, Grenoble - are described together with details of the Rietveld method used to refine the diffraction data. Experimental results from the systematic study of the Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb and Lu) manganites, are presented, with a description of sample preparation. The magnetic susceptibility, measured up to 530 K for our samples, presents a broad peak at high temperatures corresponding to the onset of the CO (TCO). From these results we define the nature of the magnetic correlations above and below TCO in the framework of the Zener polarons model. We also present the details of the nuclear and magnetic structure for all samples versus temperature, analyzing the distortions due to the doping and the effect of the ionic radius of the cations. All our samples have a pseudo-CE magnetic configuration at the lowest temperatures, corresponding to a CE-type ground state with canting. We describe the ab-initio method using the density functional theory (DFT), that have been used to model the Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 series. We present DFT and we discuss the most important features (spin polarization), approximations (pseudo-potentials and exchange-correlation functional) and (Hubbard) corrections used in this work, including a presentation of the VASP code used for the DFT calculations, with the corresponding input files. These calculations have been performed to confirm our experimental results and to access other significant quantities such as the electronic density of states. The computational approach has been tested on two pure systems: CaMnO3 and NdMnO3. Two half-doped systems have been chosen with Ln=Nd and Lu. The first because the La and Pr compounds were already studied (Picozzi, Anisimov) so we continued the series with the Nd system, and the Lu has the smallest ionic radius in the lanthanides series, its 4f shell is full and Lu is therefore comparable with La., Le but de ce travail était de réaliser une étude systématique de la structure électronique et magnétique de la famille des manganites semi-dopés du Ca: Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (Ln=REE). Nous avons focalisé notre attention sur l'ordre de charge (CO) et l'ordre orbital (OO) présents dans les manganites. Nous avons dérivé un modèle microscopique de structure nucléaire et magnétique à partir de la diffraction neutronique sur les poudres (NPD) et de calculs ab-initio afin de comparer les résultats expérimentaux et les modèles numériques et comprendre ainsi le rôle de l'inhomogénéité chimique et magnétique dans ces systèmes. La modification de l'état de spin électronique et du métal de transition par le dopage correspond à une modification structurale de la géométrie du polyèdre de coordination des atomes autour du métal de transition, induisant des changements structurels de coopération. En contraste avec l'ordre par le dopage chimique, un désordre chimique intrinsèque est associé à l'élément de dopage sur le site A du perovskite (formule générale ABO3) où sont placés les ions trivalents (RE3+) et bivalents (Ca2+). Ceci est dû à la différence de rayon ionique et d'affinité chimique entre ces ions. Afin d'étudier systématiquement l'effet de la substitution au niveau du site A et la relation entre les propriétés structurales et magnétiques, plusieurs échantillons ont été caractérisés. Les résultats de NPD sont une étape fondamentale vers la compréhension de la relation entre les propriétés structurales et magnétique et sont une source de motivation pour l'étude de la structure magnétique et des phénomènes de CO/OO par des simulations ab-initio. L'effet Jahn-Teller, les interactions de double- et super-échange, et le modèle de Zener seront introduits. Les propriétés magnétiques macroscopiques ont été mesurées en fonction de la température á l'aide d'un SQUID. La technique microscopique principale utilisée pour cette étude a été la NPD. Les instruments utilisés à l'institut Laue Langevin à Grenoble, D20 et D1A, et la méthode de Rietveld utilisée pour affiner les données expérimentales et en extraire les informations structurales seront décrits. Les résultats expérimentaux correspondant à l'étude systématique sur les échantillons de manganites de Ln0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb and Lu) et une description de leur préparation seront présentés. La susceptibilité magnétique mesurée jusqu'à 530 K présente un pic large à températures élevées correspondant à la température de CO (TCO). Nous définissons la nature des corrélations magnétiques au-dessus et en-dessous de TCO dans le cadre du modèle des polarons de Zener. Nous présentons la structure nucléaire et magnétique pour tous les échantillons en fonction de la température et les déformations dues au dopage et à l'effet du rayon ionique. Tous nos systèmes ont une configuration magnétique de type pseudo-CE à la plus basse température correspondant à un état de type CE avec un effet de canting. Nous décrirons les calculs ab-initio pour modéliser notre série : le programme VASP, utilisé pour les calculs, la théorie DFT, les approximations faite, comme le fonctionnelle d'échange-corrélation (GGA-PBE), la correction d'Hubbard (GGA+U) seront présentée. Les calculs ont été effectués pour confirmer les résultats expérimentaux et pour accéder à d'autres quantités significatives comme la densité d'états électroniques. Les simulations ont été effectuées avec la DFT spin-polarisée, le GGA-PBE, et la GGA+U, pour considérer la corrélation électronique forte. Nous avons choisi deux systèmes purs: CaMnO3 et NdMnO3. Deux systèmes semi-dopés (Ln=Nd et Lu), ont été considérés, parce que les composés avec le La et le Pr ont été déjà étudié (Picozzi, Anisimov), et nous suivons la série avec Ln=Nd, et l’outre parce que le Lu, à l'instar de La, est saturé au niveau de ses orbitales 4f et qu'il présente de surcroit le plus petit rayon ionique dans la série de lanthanides.

This manuscript is devoted to the study of magnetic properties and spin/lattice coupling in the hexagonal RMnO$_3$ compounds which belong to the multiferroic family. Most of the results were obtained from neutron scattering experiments both on powder and single crystal samples. The neutron powder diffraction data allowed us to highlight the strong coupling between atomic position and the magnetic structure stabilized. These results are discussed in terms of magnetic frustration, and we propose a model based on interplane exchange frustration. The atomic position of Mn ions relatively to a $x=1/3$ threshold is crucial in this framework. Our inelastic neutron scattering data confirmed our model by giving us access to the numerical values of some parameters from spinwave dispersions and confirmed the important role of RMn interaction on the spin dynamic. Finally, complex inelastic neutron scattering of polarized neutrons experiments showed an hybridation of spin and lattice excitations. This hybridation is interpreted within the Dzyaloshiinski-Moriya framework and numerical calculations are presented to reproduce our experimental data. This hybridation is closely related to the electromagnon observed in several multiferroic systems and seems to be inherently associated to multiferroicity., Ce manuscrit présente une étude des composés multiferroïques RMnO$_3$ hexagonaux (R=Ho, Y, Yb, In, Sc). L'accent est mis sur les corrélations spin/spin statiques et dynamiques et sur le couplage entre degrés de liberté de spin et de réseau. Cette étude s'appuie sur de nombreux résultats de diffusion de neutrons aussi bien sur poudres que sur monocristaux. La diffraction permet de déterminer précisément les positions atomiques et la structure magnétique. Nous avons pu développer un modèle rendant compte de la très grande variété de comportements observés dans ces systèmes en nous basant sur la frustration des interactions d'échange interplans. La frustration des interactions magnétiques n'est pas simplement due au réseau triangulaire de Mn mais aussi aux interactions entre Mn de plans adjacents. Cette frustration est directement controlée par la position du Mn par rapport à une valeur seuil $x=1/3$ dans la maille élémentaire. Les mesures de diffusion inélastiques ont permis de valider ce modèle en vérifiant certaines prédictions à partir de mesures de dispersion d'onde de spins et d'un calcul numérique solide (signe de la constante d'échange interplan, transitions de réorientation). Elles ont également confirmé le rôle primordial des interactions RMn sur la dynamique de spin des Mn. Enfin des mesures complexes de diffusion inélastique de neutrons polarisés ont mis en évidence une hybridation entre excitations de réseau et de spin. Un modèle basé sur l'interaction de Dzyaloshiinski-Moriya est proposé pour rendre compte des observations expérimentales. Ce mode hybride est a rapprocher de l'électromagnon observé dans de nombreux systèmes, et semble être une composante inhérente à l'existence de la multiferroïcité.

This PhD thesis deals with the study and the visualization at room temperature of the magnetization reversal process within ferromagnetic manganites thin films of composition La0,7Sr0,3MnO3 (LSMO). In this work, a Magneto Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) imaging setup was realized and a method enabling vectorial magnetization imaging was proposed. This imaging system was used to study first, the influence of the substrate, which induces strain in the film and second, the influence of the shape of the samples, on the pinning and the magnetic domain reversal process in LSMO thin films. In the case of LSAT ((LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7) substrate, the compressive stress in the LSMO film induces an out-of-plane magnetization component. The easy axis of magnetisation is in the plane of the film and does not depend on the direction in the plane. The in-plane magnetization switch is found to follow the coherent reversal model. In the case of STO (SrTiO3) substrate, with (001) orientation, the magnetic anisotropy is biaxial in the plane and the magnetization reversal occurs by nucleation and propagation of domain walls. In the case of vicinal STO substrates, the magnetic anisotropy becomes uniaxial and parallel to the steps on the surface of the substrate. Magnetic domain switch occurs by nucleation and propagation if the magnetic field is applied parallel to the atomic steps vicinal. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the steps of the vicinal substrate, the magnetic domain switch follows the coherent reversal model. The aim of this work is to give an exhaustive characterization ofthe local structure for two class of compounds: sodium dopedlanthanum manganites and tungsten doped iron-molybdenumdouble-perovskites. Both class of materials usually behave asconductors in the ferromagnetic phase and undergo ametal-to-insulator transition, associated with aferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic(antiferromagnetic) transition, uponvarying the temperature or the doping level. It is widely acceptedthat in manganites, as well as in double-perovskites, transportproperties are strongly influenced by the local structure (bondlengths and angles) around key sites, occupied by magnetic ions. Forthis reason the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), being sensitiveto the local order around the absorber atom, is the more suitabletechnique to study such compounds. In this work, the local structureof Na-doped manganites in the form of thin films has been studied asa function of the film thickness, while, bulk samples of tungstendoped iron-molybdenum double perovskite series have beeninvestigated to characterize the local structure as a function ofthe doping level and to better understand the nature of themetal-to-insulator transition. It was necessary to develop a TEYdetector. which realization was challenging from a technical pointof view and it required an extensive theoretical and technical work.X-ray absorption measurements were done at the Italian beam line fordiffraction and absorption (GILDA-BM08) at the European SynchrotronRadiation Facility (ESRF) of Grenoble (France).; L'objectif de cet étude est de donner une caractérisation complètede la structure locale de deux classes de composés : les manganitesde lanthane droguées avec du sodium et les doubles perovskites deferro-molybdène droguées avec du tungstène. Les deux classes secomportent, en général comme de conducteurs dans leur phaseferromagnétique et, suivant variations de température ou de dopage,ils subissent une transition métal-isolant à laquelle il fautassocier une transitionferromagnétique-paramagnétique(antiferromagnétique). En effet, ilest tout à fait accepté que aussi bien dans les manganites, que dansles perovskites doubles, les propriétés de transport sontinfluencées d'une façon importante par la structure locale (longueuret angle de liaison) autour des sites clés occupés par des ionsmagnétiques. Pour cette raison la spectroscopie d'absorption derayon X, en étant sensible à l'ordre locale autour de l'atomeabsorbeur, constitue la technique la plus adaptée pour l'étude deces composés. La structure locale de film fins de manganite droguéesavec du sodium a été étudiée en fonction de l'épaisseur des film.Des échantillons de poudre de perovskites double droguées avectungstène ont été étudiées pour en caractériser la structure localeen fonction du dopage et pour chercher de comprendre la nature de latransition métal-isolant. Il a été nécessaire de développer undétecteur d'électrons. La réalisation de cet instrument s'est révéléun défi du point de vue technique et il a demandé une quantité detravail aussi bien sur la plan pratique que théorique. Les mesuresd'absorption de rayon-X ont été effectuées à la ligne de lumièreitalienne pour la diffraction et l'absorption (GILDA-BM8) àl'Installation Européenne de Rayonnement de Synchrotron (ESRF) deGrenoble (France).

The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the study of the ordering of localized classical spins coupled to itinerant electrons via the Zener double exchange model. The tendency to ferromagnetism resulting from electron motion is thwarted by the competition with antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions, leading to a variety of complex magnetic structures. First, the one dimensional model is studied as a function of the electronic density and a ferromagnetic “polaron” phase, each polaron containing three spins only, is shown to exist in a large part of the diagram even at low density. The tendency towards phase separation is studied in detail. In a second part we consider spin ordering in 3-leg ladders present in the structure of the Fe Ludwigite: Fe(3)O(2)BO(3). We examine the interplay between magnetic ordering, charge ordering and structural instability observed in this system. Finally, we consider the controversy between charge ordering and “Zener Polaron” ordering in the manganite La(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3). It is shown that this two types of ordering are exclusive, except within an extremely reduced range of parameters.; L'objectif de cette thèse est de contribuer à l'étude de l'ordre de spins classiques localisés couplés à des électrons itinérants par un modèle de double échange de Zener. La tendance au ferromagnétisme due au mouvement électronique est contrecarrée par la compétition avec des interactions de super-échange antiferromagnétiques, ce qui conduit à une variété de structures magnétiques complexes. Nous étudions tout d'abord le modèle à une dimension en fonction de la densité électronique, et montrons qu'une phase de « polarons » ferromagnétiques, chaque polaron contenant seulement trois spins, existe dans une grande partie du diagramme de phase même à faible densité. La tendance vers une séparation de phases est étudiée en détail. Dans une deuxième partie nous considérons l'ordre de spins dans les échelles de spins à trois montants présentes dans la structure de la ludwigite de Fe : Fe(3)O(2)BO(3). Nous examinons la relation entre l'ordre magnétique, l'ordre de charge et l'instabilité structurale observée dans ce système. Finalement, nous abordons la controverse entre l'ordre de charge et l'ordre de « polarons de Zener » dans la manganite La(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3). Nous montrons que ces deux types d'ordre sont exclusifs, sauf pour une gamme extrêmement réduite des paramètres.

It is shown that this two types of ordering are exclusive, except within an extremely reduced range of parameters., L'objectif de cette thèse est de contribuer à l'étude de l'ordre de spins classiques localisés couplés à des électrons itinérants par un modèle de double échange de Zener. La tendance au ferromagnétisme due au mouvement électronique est contrecarrée par la compétition avec des interactions de super-échange antiferromagnétiques, ce qui conduit à une variété de structures magnétiques complexes. Nous étudions tout d'abord le modèle à une dimension en fonction de la densité électronique, et montrons qu'une phase de « polarons » ferromagnétiques, chaque polaron contenant seulement trois spins, existe dans une grande partie du diagramme de phase même à faible densité. La tendance vers une séparation de phases est étudiée en détail. Dans une deuxième partie nous considérons l'ordre de spins dans les échelles de spins à trois montants présentes dans la structure de la ludwigite de Fe : Fe(3)O(2)BO(3). Nous examinons la relation entre l'ordre magnétique, l'ordre de charge et l'instabilité structurale observée dans ce système. Finalement, nous abordons la controverse entre l'ordre de charge et l'ordre de « polarons de Zener » dans la manganite La(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3). Nous montrons que ces deux types d'ordre sont exclusifs, sauf pour une gamme extrêmement réduite des paramètres.

In our study we have synthesised and studied the structural and magnetic properties of the perovskite RBaMn2O6-d (where d=0 and 0.5). Concerning the compound YBaMn2O6, DSC measurements show that it undergoes three transitions: two around 500K and a third one at 750K. X-ray and neutron diffraction studies have shown that the high temperature phase crystallises in the space group P4/nbm. The X-ray and neutron diffraction patterns show only one structural transition whereas two endothermic peaks are observed in the DSC measurements around 500K. The intermediate phase structure was refined in the space group C2/m. The charge ordered phase (that below 500K) being characterised by a low symmetry, we have realised a combined X-ray/neutron diffraction refinement. The results which were obtained show a difference of only 15%, with respect to the ideal charge separation Mn3+/Mn4+. The refinement of the magnetic structure, and the magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the formation of Zener polarons containing four manganese cations. The compound YBaMn2O5.5 crystallises in the space group Icma, its cell being twice that of the lanthanum same compound. This is due to the existence, in the YBaMn2O5.5 compound, of a rotation of the octahedra around the [001] direction. The refinement of the magnetic structure and the magnetic susceptibility measurements have shown that the magnetic moments of the Mn3+ cations present in the structure, are antiferromagnetically coupled. The study of the RBaMn2O6 compounds has allowed us to establish a phase diagram as a function of rare earth cations and temperature.; Cette thèse porte sur la synthèse et l'étude des propriétés structurales et magnétiques de perovskites RBaMn2O6-d (où d = 0 et 0,5). En cotutelle avec l'Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.; This thesis reports on properties of Mn oxides of the type L1-xAxMnO3 (L=La, A=Ca, Sr) with x=1/3. These compounds exhibit a paramagnet-to-ferromagnet transition at Tc close to 300 K. In the paramagnetic regime, the electric resistance reveals a semi-conducting behaviour that changes to metallic when the temperature becomes lower than TC. In other words, the magnetic transitition is accompanied by an insulator-to-metal transition. The application of an external magnetic field favours the ferromagnetic ordering of Mn moments which leads to a shift of Tc to higher temperatures which in turn produces an important decrease of the intrinsic resistivity close to this transition, giving rise to a strong magnetoresistive effect called colossal magnetoresistance. In these compounds, many interactions have similar energy scales and compete to determine the ground state, making manganites very interesting materials from the basic point of view (related to the study of strongly correlated systems) as well as for the development of new devices for spin electronics.Within this frame, this thesis is focused on the three following points : 1. The biggest effort in the experimental work has been dedicated to the setup and automatisation of a radiofrequency sputtering system for the fabrication of thin flms of magneticoxides. This systems includes a high vacuum chamber whose atmosphere is controlled by two pumps, electrovalves and fluxmeters. The different elements of the system (substrateheaters and holders, magnetrons, etc) are computer-controlled, which allows the growth of films and heterostructures in a fully automated fashion.2. The second part of the work consisted in controlling the growth of thin films of mixed valence manganites, mainly La2/3Ca1/3MnO3, at the nanoscopic scale. The influence of several parameters (temperature, growth rate, etc) on the different key characteristics of the material (cell parameters, transition temperatures, residual resisitivity, surface roughness, etc) has been extensively studied and the reproducible fabrication of high-quality films has been achieved.3. The main part of the work is focused on the role of interfaces on the physical properties of manganite thin films. It is well know that the interaction responsible for ferromagnetism in these compounds is very sensitive to structural distortions which, combined with a high polarisation of the charge carriers, leads to a strong low-field magnetoresistance in nanometric ceramic powders. This high polarisation also gives rise to a large low-fieldresponse in tunnel junctions. Our contribution consists in the fabrication of artificial interfaces of several types (epitaxial films with in-plane misoriented crystallites, laser-patternedinterfaces and bicrystalline junctions) and the correlation of magnetic and magnetotransport results with data from structural analysis. The influence of the interface with thesubstrate (SrTiO3, LaAlO3, NdGaO3) has also been studied by growing fully strained epitaxial films with thicknesses ranging from 2.4 nm to 180 nm. Among the most dramatic effects observed, one can mention a marked decrease of TC accompanied by an increase ofthe residual resistivity when reducing the thickness of the films, as well as a multiphase separation between ferromagnetic-metallic, ferromagnetic-insulating and non-ferromagnetic-insulating regions. Apart from this study about the properties of interfaces in manganites, fundamental transport phenomena such as anisotropic magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall effect have been assigned have also been investigated. Their magnitude and temperature dependence have been analysed and a semi-quantitative explanation involving the spin-orbit interaction and the electronic texture close to Tc has been proposed.; Cette thèse est dédiée à l'étude d'oxydes de Mn du type L1-xAxMnO3 (L=La, A=CA, Sr) pour x=1/3. Ces composés présentent une transition paramagnétique-ferromagnétique avec une Tc proche de 300K. Dans le régime paramagnétique, la résistance électrique présente un comportemtent semiconducteur et un caractère métallique pour des températures inférieures à Tc : la transition magnétique s'accompagne donc d'une transition métal-isolant. L'application d'un champ magnétique externe favorise l'ordre ferromagnétique entre les moments des ions Mn, conduisant à un déplacement de Tc vers les hautes températures, ce qui produit une variation importante de la résistivité près de la transition. C'est cet effet que l'on appelle "magnétorésistance colossale". Dans les manganites, plusieurs interactions sont en compétition pour déterminer l'état électronique fondamental, ce qui confère à ces matériaux un grand intérêt comme système à électrons fortement corrélés. Les manganites possèdent également certaines fonctionnalités exploitables pour l'électronique de spin, comme leur forte polarisation de spin. Dans ce cadre, cette thèse est articulée autour des points suivants :1. Le plus gros effort experimental a consisté à mettre au point et automatiser un bâti de croissance de couches minces par pulvérisation cathodique. Ce système comprend une chambre à vide dont l'atmosphère est contrôlée par deux pompes, des électrovannes et des fluxomètres. Les différentes éléments (chaufferettes porte-substrats, magnétrons, etc) sont pilotés par un ordinateur de sorte que la croissance de couches et d'hétérostructures est entièrement automatisée.2. La seconde partie du travail a concerné l'étude et l'optimisation des conditions de croissance de couches minces nanométriques de La2/3Ca1/3MnO3. L'influence des différents paramètres de croissance (température, vitesse de dépôt, etc) sur les propriétés du matériau ont été étudiées de façon exhaustive afin de maîtriser la croissance de couches de haute qualité avec une bonne reproductibilité.3. La majeure partie du travail a consisté à étudier l'influence des interfaces sur les propriétés physiques de couches minces de manganite. L'interaction responsable du ferromagnétisme de ces matériaux est très sensible aux distorsions structurales ce qui, combiné à la forte polarisation de spin des porteurs, donne lieu à une forte magnétorésistance à champ faible dans des poudres nanométriques (contenant une grande densité de joints de grains). Cette forte polarisation de spin conduit aussi à l'observation de forts effets magnétorésistifs dans des jonctions tunnel à base de manganites. Dans ce cadre, notre contribution consiste à étudier plusieurs types d'interfaces (joints de grains d'orientation contrôlée dans des couches texturées, défauts générés par irradiation laser, jonctions bicristallines) et a corréler les propriétés magnétiques et de magnétotransport avec les caractéristiques structurales. L'influence de l'interface avec le substrat isolant (SrTiO3, LaAlO3, NdGaO3) a également été étudiée via la dépendence en épaisseur (2.4 - 180 nm) des propriétés de couches minces totalement contraintes. Parmi les effets les plus marquants, on observe une forte diminution de la Tc et une aumgentation de la résistivité lorsque l'épaisseur diminue. Nous avons montré que cela résulte d'une séparation de phase entre des régions nanométriques ferromagnétiques-métalliques, ferromagnétiques-isolantes et non-ferromagnétiques-isolantes présentes à l'interface couche-substrat. Par ailleurs, nous avons également effectué des mesures de magnétorésistane anisotrope et d'effet Hall extraordinaire. L'amplitude de ces deux effects a été comparée et interprétée en fonction du couplage spin-orbite et des propriétés électroniques près de Tc.

This work deals with the synthesis and characterization of manganese oxides with CaxMnyOz formulaand y/x >1. According to a solid state chemistry scope, the redox properties of these materials will becorrelated to their chemical composition and crystallographic structure which constitutes a forehandexploratory study of compounds that are intended to be used for the automotive catalysis exhaustbased on the three-way catalysis principle. The materials were synthesized by aqueous selfcombustionroute and structurally characterized. Redox properties and reducibility properties wereevaluated by TGA and H2-TPR, respectively. Whatever the structure, the dimensionality of the networkor the manganese valence in the starting oxidized material, all of the manganese ions are completelyreduced (Mn2+) in a Ar/H2 atmosphere. The reduced compounds crystallize in a rock-salt type solidsolution with the formula Ca1-xMnxO. The mechanisms of manganese reduction within these structureswere explored on the basis of TGA analysis. In order to tune the reduction temperatures, the ionocovalenceof the Mn-O bond has been modified by either cationic substitution of calcium in the 2Dnetworks or either substitution of manganese in the 3D networks. In this last case, Substituting ionswere Al3+ and Fe3+ which ionic radii comparable to Mn4+ and Mn3+, respectively. Solid solutions havebeen characterized from a structural point of view but also for their redox properties. One shouldnotice that iron substituted compounds exhibit remarkable redox properties because Fe3+ ions firstreduce in Fe2+ iron before a final reduction in Fe° that is consequently expulsed from the matrix. Atreoxidation, iron returns into the 3D network and cycling can be observed when reducing and oxidizingat temperatures lower than 1000°C., Ce travail porte sur la synthèse et la caractérisation d’oxydes de manganèse de formule généraleCaxMnyOz avec y/x > 1. Par une approche de chimie du solide, les propriétés redox de ces matériauxseront corrélées à leur composition chimique et leur structure cristalline ce qui constitue une étude enamont de l’application pour ces systèmes pouvant jouer le rôle de tampon à oxygène dans desprocessus catalytiques. Les composés ont été synthétisés par autocombustion en voie aqueuse etcaractérisés d’un point de vue structural. Les propriétés redox ont été évaluées par ATG et lespropriétés de réductibilité par H2-TPR pour certains composés. Quelles que soient la structure, ladimensionnalité ou la valence du manganèse dans les composés oxydés (Mn4+/Mn3+), le manganèsese réduit totalement en Mn2+ sous atmosphère réductrice (Ar/H2). Les composés réduits cristallisentdans une solution solide de type NaCl de formule Ca1-xMnxO. Les mécanismes de réduction dumanganèse au sein de ces structures ont été appréhendés sur la base des analysesthermogravimétriques. Afin de faire varier les températures de réduction, l’iono-covalence de la liaisonMn-O a été modifiée via des substitutions cationiques (i) sur les sites du calcium principalement ausein de réseaux 2D ou (ii) sur les sites du manganèse essentiellement dans les réseaux 3D avec laprésence d’Al3+ ou de Fe3+ de rayons ioniques comparables respectivement à Mn4+ et Mn3+. Lessolutions solides ont été caractérisées d’un point de vue structural mais aussi pour leurs propriétésredox. Il convient de souligner que les phases substituées au Fer présentent des propriétés redox toutà fait remarquables dans la mesure où les ions Fe3+ tout comme Mn4+/3+ se réduisent d’abord en Fe2+puis en Fe° qui est dès lors expulsé hors de la matrice oxyde. Lors de la réoxydation, le fer réintègrele réseau 3D et les matériaux sont cyclables dans des conditions réductrices puis oxydantes à l’air àdes températures inférieures à 1000°C.
