Ce « Projet Collectif de Recherche » regroupe archéologues, historiens, palynologues, géomorphologues, géologues et paléométallurgistes autour de l’étude de l’extraction et du traitement de minerais de plomb (argentifère) au Moyen Âge sur le Mont Lozère : archives, inventaire des vestiges et traces, impact environnemental, reconstitution des techniques.Cet exposé a pour but de donner le cadre et de resituer les unes par rapport aux autres les différentes communications relatives au Mont Lozère, mais aussi de présenter nos résultats non exposés lors de ce colloque, le plus souvent parce qu’ils l’ont été par ailleurs.Plus de 75 sites à scories (vestiges d’ateliers) et de 200 charbonnières associées ont été répertoriés, tous situés dans la même tranche altitudinale (1400 m +/-50) ; seul le hêtre a été charbonné.La filiation de la minéralisation aux ateliers et à leur environnement a été abordée via des analyses élémentaires et isotopiques (Pb) sur des matériaux issus de la chaîne opératoire ou associés (minerais, scories, sols d’ateliers et sols actuels proches, végétaux). L’analyse pollinique, géochimique et isotopique d’une tourbière minérotrophe montre deux périodes d’activités métallurgiques associées à des déboisements importants. La seconde période correspond à l’activité médiévale. L’activité durant La Tène était inattendue car tous les vestiges du Mont Lozère sont médiévaux. Sur tous ces aspects, l’isotopie du plomb (Pb) de précision s’est révélée très précieuse et des reconstitutions expérimentales ont validé les relations minerais-scories-fumées.Plusieurs sites ont fait l’objet de sondages et deux ont été retenus pour les premières fouilles. Le premier a livré trois bases de fours, trop mal conservés pour permettre une restitution du fonctionnement, mais il est possible d’émettre des hypothèses, à partir des scories, des déchets de parois de four, de l’organisation de l’espace. Le site 3 s’est installé en bordure de tourbière lors d’une longue période sèche ; ce fait conduit à faire le lien avec l’évolution climatique : établissement des ateliers sur ce domaine à la faveur de l’Optimum Médiéval.La cartographie et topologie des vestiges, l’anthracologie, etc. se sont révélés riches en enseignements dans le domaine de l’archéologie forestière : reconstitution spatiale des espaces boisés, sylvofaciès, pratiques proto-industrielles… Ceci nous conduit vers la notion de partage du territoire avec les pratiques pastorales. This “Collective Research Project” brings together archaeologists, historians, palynologists, geomorphologists, geologists and paleometallurgists in an initiative to study the extraction and treatment of (argentiferous) lead-bearing ores in the Middle Ages on Mont Lozère: archives, inventory of remains and traces, environmental impact and reconstruction of techniques.The aim of this report is to set the framework and relate the different papers on Mont Lozère, as well as to report our results that were not presented during the symposium, either because they were presented elsewhere or due to a lack of time.More than 75 sites with slag (remains of workshops) and more than 200 related coal-making site have been listed, all of them located within the same altitudinal section (1400m +/- 50); only beech was burnt to charcoal.The relationship of mineralisation with the workshops and their environment has been addressed through elementary and isotopic (Pb) analyses of the materials derived from the operating chain or related materials (ores, slag, workshop floor and nearby today’s soil, plants). Pollen, geochemical and isotopic analyses of minerotrophic peat bog show two periods of metallurgical activities associated with large-scale deforestation. The second period represents the period of medieval activity. The activity during the La Tene period was unexpected since all of the Mont Lozère remains are medieval. The precision isotope ratio analysis of lead proved to be invaluable in this respect and experimental reconstitutions have validated the ores-slag-fumes relationships.Probing holes were done on several sites and two of them were chosen for the first extensive excavations. The first one produced three furnace bases, insufficiently preserved to allow operation to be reconstructed, however assumptions may be put made based on the slag, furnace wall scraps and spatial organization. Site 3 became established on the edge of the bog during a long dry period. This fact points to a link with climate change: the setting up of workshops in this area during the Medieval Climatic Optimum.The mapping and topology of the remains, anthracology, etc. have provided a wealth of information in the field of forest archaeology: spatial reconstruction of wooded areas, silvifacies, protoindustrial practices, etc. This leads us to the concept of the sharing of the territory with pastoral practices.

L’auteur propose de vérifier la validité du modèle qu’il avait élaboré pour rendre compte des pratiques agnatiques endogames peules en s’appuyant cette fois sur un vaste ensemble comparatif africain et malgache. Au terme de cette analyse, il apparaît, dans tous les exemples traités, que le «mariage arabe» traduit non pas une «préférence endogame», mais un évitement de l’union avec les parents utérins. L’auteur envisage également la manière dont ce modèle peut être étendu à d’autres types de systèmes matrimoniaux, et serait dès lors susceptible de fournir une alternative aux analyses anthropologiques des systèmes d’alliance fondées sur la théorie de l’alliance ou celle des groupes de filiation. Endogamous marriages in Africa and Madagascar. -- The author seeks to verify the validity of the model that he has worked out to account for endogamous agnatic practices among the Fulani by using a vast set of comparative data on Africa and Madagascar. In all the examples taken under consideration, this analysis shows that the marriage between patrilateral parallel cousins reflects not an “endogamous preference” but rather the avoidance of a marriage with uterines. The way this model can be extended to other types of marital systems is investigated. In this case, it would provide an alternative to anthropological analyses of marriage systems based on alliance or descent group theories.

To determine the reproducibility of radial artery mass (RAM), in hypertensive patients.In 49 patients, RAM was measured using a high resolution echotracking device (Nius-02) which allows noninvasive measurement of diameter and wall thickness of the radial artery. RAM was validated in vitro by comparing weight of arterial segments to ultrasonographic measurement and determined as RAM = r (pi Re2-pi Ri2) where r is the arterial wall density (1.06 g/cm3), and Re and Ri are values of internal and external radii, respectively. Repeatability coefficient (RC2 = SDi2/n) was 1.3 mg.Blood pressure was (mean +/- SD) 146 +/- 19/85 +/- 15 mmHg, radial arterial diameter was 2,449 +/- 376 microns, radial wall thickness was 302 +/- 68 microns, RAM was 28 +/- 9 mg (range 13-43 mg).These results indicate that radial artery mass can be measured using a high resolution echotracking device.

The structure of arteries changes with age. Gradual disappearance of elastic fibres facilitates dilatation of the arterial lumen and increase in length of the vessels. Simultaneously, the arterial wall becomes thicker, but it is often difficult to distinguish the changes due to ageing from those caused by atherosclerosis. These structural alterations result in a greater rigidity of the arteries, which can now be evaluated by non-invasive segmental methods. This shows that ageing does not have the same functional effects on wide-caliber elastic arteries and on middle-sized muscular arteries. The increase of systolic arterial pressure observed in the elderly is a consequence of structural and functional changes in the arterial system.
