The essay is a comparative analysis of the way in which salvation is presented into three novels dealing with shipwrecks and outcasts: Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954), Tournier’s Friday, or The Other Island (1967), and Coetzee’s Foe (1986). Through the comparative analysis of three novels of the 20th century, the essay highlights how the shipwreck of the representatives of European civilization on an exotic, deserted and uninhabited island leads to a similar solution, of the impossibility of salvation in the framework of the same civilization. The difference in vision from the happy end feature of the Robinson myth established by Daniel Defoe is self-imposed and proves an acute crisis of modern man’s consciousness, but also an aesthetic awareness of the fact that, a few hundred years away from the establishment of the modern myth, European civilization can no longer feed on its own illusions.

In my paper I point out that the study of literary utopias has been and still is a constant focus on my scientific research. It has accompanied me in different historical and political contexts, helping in analysing and interpreting their complexity. The metaphor I use is that of Utopia as a tree with deep roots from which many branches spread out. In my first book on this topic, I suggested that Utopia could be considered on the whole as a literary genre, characterized by a continuous metamorphosis over time and space. Within such a theoretical framework, I addressed how a variety of utopian main themes, i.e. the journey, the island, and the dream, have been treated in pillars of utopian English literature. Eventually, what fascinated me is that Utopia allowed and still allows me to look at major problems and questions of my contemporary time taking a “lateral” perspective and envisaging new, usually unexpected, political horizons.

James Joyce’s Ulysses may be considered the quintessential Irish novel, but it is also notable for its critique of insularity. The continental way of life is seen as superior by the two main male characters, Stephen Dedalus, the author’s individualist alter ego, and Leopold Bloom, a Jew who faces hatred from his fellow Dubliners. Based on a systematic survey of the occurrences of the word 'island' (and its derivatives) in the novel, this paper will demonstrate that there is a correlation between the theme of the island and the matter of Jewishness. The question of insularity and that of Jewishness have been widely studied in Ulysses, often separately. Based on canonical material, the paper aims to highlight and comment on the obvious effects of concomitance/co-occurrence, so as to offer a vision of Irish insularity conceived through the prism of Bloom's shifting and alternative identity.

Culturally valued, politically controversial, the notion of identity, philosophically, turns out to be an uncertain concept: undifferentiated similarity, but differentiated feeling of belonging to values which define us as both identical, and different. If the island has something to do with identity it is because it is a minority figure whose history has often brought it into contact with colonialism: it seems that claims of identity are often related to dominated minorities. Rather than an identity of withdrawal, it is towards an identity of Relation that Glissant takes us by resorting to the notion of Archipelago and by betting on Diversity. Before him, it was a New Caledonian writer, Jean Mariotti, who preferably stages an insularity of the in-between based on the games of a multiple identity in the making impossible to realize, which returns to otherness which constitutes it, while overthrowing it. We are then in the presence of contradictory and fragmented identities that their gap opens up to their inner distance and that their juxtaposition makes similar to what each is in the other.

Our study proposes to analyse the issue of the double insular experience, that of continental isolation and that of opening up to a hoped-for paradise. To demonstrate these aspects of insularity, we will examine a contemporary Hungarian novel by György Ferdinady, entitled An Island Under Water (Sziget a víz alatt, 1960). The protagonist-narrator, an exile from the 1956 Hungarian revolution, settles on a tropical island in Puerto Rico, where he shares the conditions of the colonized with the local inhabitants. Torn from continental isolation, he finds himself in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, both locked up as an exile and free as a geography teacher, adopted by the native community.

The essay is a comparative analysis of the function and meaning of water into three novels dealing with shipwrecks and outcasts: Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954), Tournier’s Friday, or The Other Island (1967), Coetzee’s Foe (1986). In Lord of the Flies the water is not, seemingly, a significant actor of the narration, it has no notable role, it is not a structural element to entail the development of the internal history. Yet, a close reading reveals a meaning in an unobtrusive accordance with the main topic: the confrontation between civilization and savageness within the human nature with uncomfortable triumph of the latter. In Friday, or The Other Island there is an abundance of water on the island, which is a sign for its lubricity or/and its fecundity. The island with inner wet gallery is metamorphosed by Robinson in a living feminine companion. Robinson enforces upon the island not only the perpetual erotic availability, but the motherly vocation as well. The flow of water is factitiously driven, with effort, for the conception and maintenance of an anthropogenic reservoir; the description of the paddy can be read as that of a womb bearing a constrained pregnancy. In Foe from the very beginning the water is related to the apparent impossibility of an exact report of the reality through words. The subject is further expanded both through Friday’s muteness, which makes him an enigma, and through the configuration of a history by means of writing; a history that is phony in principle when tackled by the author Foe, a history that is ostensibly faithful to the reality and for which Susan is (unsuccessfully) striving, a history that is willfully neglected by Robinson, the thoroughly nameless history of Friday.

The article argues that the element of water (supplemented by the presence of islands and an island existence) serves as a wide-ranging and thus typically modernist leitmotif in the duology The Rainbow and Women in Love, taking its ultimate inspiration from the story of the Flood in Genesis. This, in turn, establishes a closer structural connection between the two works than is usually recognised. However, whereas in The Rainbow this motif remains throughout within an organic, meaningful, and ultimately constructive context, it is transformed in Women in Love into an almost exclusively destructive force, closely connected with the writer’s apocalyptic sentiments about the War. To some extent, the Flood or Deluge motif could be seen as a symbolic substitute, on a universal level, for the conspicuous absence of the War in the latter novel, that is as a threat of universal extinction. At the same time, the motif is also applicable to the individual lives of the characters and their needs for the death of an old self and the resurrection of a new one. In Women in Love Gerald Crich, in particular, personifies these destructive forces, both as an individual and as a representative of a larger system. Despite being confined almost exclusively to inland settings, this novel also explores ideas of escape, crossings, islands and insularity.

The island is the subject of multiple projections, myths and legends, both poetic and novelistic, on all five continents. A favourite subject for representing exile and solitude, whether voluntary or involuntary, it is ambivalent depending on the context: an asylum or a prison, paradise or hell, synonymous with separation or reunion, arrival or departure, immensity or enclosed space, war or peace, utopia or dystopia, the profane or the sacred. Several bodies of work embody this nomadic and archipelagic way of thinking about insularity, between reality and fiction, and travelogues. This tour will look first at the approach taken by the singer-songwriters who have left their mark on our popular imagination. Secondly, naturalist stories, adventure and fantasy novels and romances have been part of our childhood and adolescence, like rites of passage to adulthood, discovering distant, strange, unknown lands, imaginary or real, wild spaces. Unconsciously inhabiting our modern and contemporary collective, these authors are today revealing themselves to be whistle-blowers, as their awareness of man’s impact on living plants and animals anticipates the concepts of “ecosophy”, literary ecology, “evocentrism”, free evolution, world literature and humanistic ecology.

In the field of French-speaking literature, the French island of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is hardly known and little explored. However, writer Eugène Nicole, in his autobiographical work, provided an in-depth narration of his “stone”. In the light of eco-geopoetics, his Oeuvre des mers delivers a singular and astonishing writing of “French Nordicity”.

The island mentioned in the title of Michel Houellebecq’s novel, The Possibility of an Island does not exist, it is an imaginary place which corresponds to an ideal. We could call it the island of happiness and say that the entire novel cycle tends towards this goal. It is an island because it is necessarily a place separated from the continent, it is an isolated place because true love can only exist, it seems, far from society. In fact, the Houellebecquian hero is an isolated being in the middle of the crowd. Sexual liberation therefore did not have the expected effects. Instead of the community ideal, the exact opposite happened. And we will see how Michel Houellebecq, based on this observation, will introduce the notion of insularity into his work. Existential loneliness, characteristic of the contemporary era, will result in the complete isolation of each man in a “residence”, a territory in which he will be alone and cut off from others. The work as a whole describes a situation which is very degraded but paradoxically insists on the importance of love and on the role of literature in encouraging human beings to go in search of imaginary islands which are islands of resistance in a world of loneliness.

This article examines three literary texts in which the Mediterranean is conceived as a fragmented island space: Jean-Claude Izzo’s “La Méditerranée en fragments”, Jean Grenier’s Les îles and Jules Verne’s Hector Servadac. From a diachronic perspective, we can see that the concept of insularity is associated with different spatial semantics, which are the expression of a cultural topography of the Mediterranean. From a theoretical point of view, we draw on Ottmar Ette’s topological concept, which distinguishes between an ‘island-world’ and a ‘world of islands’. It is through the lens of these notions that we will observe an evolution in the literary construction of the Mediterranean, which is progressively considered as an archipelago-type structure. Insularity does not automatically represent a concept of cultural diversity in the Mediterranean, but it is semantised in a different way each time.

Panjang and Lima Islands are island tourism areas with coastal and marine resources. Tourism resources should be well developed because they are a community income source. This study aims to analyze and map the island’s resource potential and design alternative development strategies in Banten Bay. The research was conducted from October to December 2022. Data collection was carried out using field observations and interviews with questionnaires. Data analysis includes regional carrying capacity (CC), Willingness to pay (WTP), Travel Cost Method (TCM), and SWOT analysis. The results showed that CC of Panjang and Lima Islands obtained 283 people/day and 116 people/day, respectively. The average WTP of Panjang and Lima Island is Rp. 5,000, and Rp. 5,277.78, respectively. The average TCM tourist visitor to Panjang and Lima Islands earns IDR. 110,500, and IDR. 102,987, respectively. The alternative strategy for Panjang Island is to provide diving and snorkeling services for marine tourism and underwater archeology and use the beaches around the Panjang Island as a tourist attraction. The alternative strategy for Lima Island is to utilize the ecosystem around the Lima Island to become a tourist attraction, arrange facilities, and provide photo spots around that island

The tourist attractiveness of a Mediterranean island: an investigation based on the stakeholders’ perception in Sicily. The attractiveness of regions for firms, investments, tourists, students, workers, talented people, and other categories is a relevant issue for regional economic development in the age of globalization. Attractiveness for tourists is one of the most important dimensions as the economic relevance of tourism is continually on the rise. This is true for peripheral areas like islands, where attracting people and investments is even more difficult due to the geographical characteristics. This paper presents the case study of tourist attractiveness of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, based on the qualitative findings of a research on the stakeholders’ perception and point of view conducted through in-depth semi-structured interviews. Qualitative analyses of the text of the interviews are twofold: on the one hand we have conducted a thematic analysis, identifying, and analyzing themes and sub-themes which capture something important in relation to the overall research question. On the other hand, we analyzed document content as a lexical tool using Leximancer software, which analyzes meanings within texts by extracting key concepts and ideas. These analyses have been able to the bring out the key aspects and the key drivers that so far did not emerge clearly from the studies on Sicilian tourism. The tourist attractiveness of Sicily, for better or worse, cannot be disentangled from its physical nature and its unique and rich history. Thanks to its island status, and thanks to its valuable assets in terms of landscape, climate, art, and culture, it has a great potential in terms of tourist attractiveness. However, it suffers also the disadvantages associated with being an island: like the low level of accessibility and the high seasonality. Moreover, the tourist industry is poorly organized and not competitive compared to other Mediterranean islands, and the governance of the tourist sector is deficient. At the end, in an extremely peripheral region like Sicily where private entrepreneurs suffer from absolute competitive disadvantages, the role of the public institutions is fundamental in order to exploit successfully its local and unique assets, and to increase the level of attractiveness. Current geography curricula in elementary and middle schools emphasize the need to take into account pupils' representations and geographical experience as well as the development of their creativity and imaginary. The article offers an analysis of the imagination mobilised by pupils from 4th through 9th grade in the situation of a cartographic production of an island to be developed. The analysis shows that the productions produced refer to varied geographical experiences and not only of school origin. The school geography seems to build a disciplinary imagination which takes on a growing role as the course progresses. However, this disciplinary imagination struggles to shape data from the perception and representation of everyday spaces and to link them with an organized geographical space design activity.

Aquaculture is a growing agricultural activity in the Marajó Archipelago, State of Pará, Brazil. Thus, it is important to discuss the creation of aquatic organisms in technical courses in the field of agrarian sciences. Given this, the present study aimed to understand the students’ reflections in agriculture regarding the area of aquaculture, through the application of diagnostic analysis. The methodology consisted of a qualitative and explanatory field research. The study was developed with 50 students of the first year of high school of the technical course in Agriculture of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pará (IFPA), Campus Breves. In conclusion, the students declared that they found the subject of aquaculture important as a discipline within the technical course, although they interested in fish farming. The lack of knowledge about aquaculture ventures in Marajó may be one of also demonstrate little affinity with the area; those who have shown affinity are the factors responsible for the students' lack of interest in the area, because in the region the culture of fishing activity has been even stronger for fish generation in the Marajó archipelago.

This article aims to explore the way R. L. Stevenson and H. G. Wells use the insular space to go back to more timeless ways of writing and thus to revive insular romance in works such as The Ebb-Tide or The Island of Doctor Moreau. If by the turn of the 19th century, starting anew and being reborn on a desert island had become increasingly difficult, the island still offered the possibility of a form of literary re-birth or ‘renaissance’, by regressing to more ancient forms of story-telling while simultaneously innovating in terms of literary form and genre. This paper therefore aims to analyse the ambivalence of this insular ‘renaissance’, and the way it relies on pre-existing tropes and motifs while adapting to spatial and cultural changes in the insular context, in order to renew the adventure genre and offer an alternative to literary Realism at the turn of the 19th century. It moreover explores the motif of the island as laboratory, be it a scientific, a political or a literary one, and the various forms of revivals it leads to in the two authors’ works.

Space sparsity, low amount of resources, maritimity, facility to recognize geographical and political frontiers, endemism and social differences in relation to other lands are some features of the islands. However, there are many situations related to the insular spaces and we chose the chorotypes (complex graphic models of spatial relationships common to two or more places on Earth) to show some possibilities to understand the insularity. To do so, we brought examples of islands and archipelagoes in Brazil and around the world.

Aviation activities in the Caribbean islands are ancient and remain intense. As an important means for openness and economic development, including tourism, airports have become essential attributes of major cities and pivotal elements of urban spaces. They contribute to enhancing the image of territories which they serve and participate in the spatial recompositions within the Caribbean cities. This work aims at questioning, using different scales of analysis, the interactions between these infrastructures and the urban world, within a more liberal and selective international context. It provides a new reading tool in order to show the diversity of Caribbean cities and islands faced with the rapid growth in air transport and urbanization.

This work shows the specific feature of the islands. To do so, we used a method that could argue with images instead of words: the Chorématique, developed by the French geographer Roger Brunet, by the public interest organization Reclus (Réseau d'Étude des Changements dans les Localisations et les Unités Spatiales: Network for the Study of Changes in the Locations and the Spatial Units) and by Mappemonde (M@ppemonde) Magazine. Firstly, with the current representation possibilities in terms of geometry, Brunet proposed some basic or structural images that can be used (separately or jointly) in different situations to show the most important aspects of a region. By applying this method to demonstrate the island distinctiveness, we created some basic images as well as Brunet done. Then, we presented a graphic model that shows the essential geography of Montão de Trigo, a small island in the northern coast of São Paulo State, Brazil. Among all the features of the island, there are different types of phenomena: relationships between ocean and land; domestic and foreign linkages; center places; natural and human regions; ownership and rights of use the land; degrees of human intervention; and, finally, the maritime influences in the process of human settlement.

The famous episode of Don Quixote that covers the account of Sancho Panza's government in the island of Barataria, gives us the opportunity and the ideal pretext to immerse ourselves into the very heart of two pivotal questions whose elucidation will enable us to widely understand the scope and depth of the Cervantine classic and the stratified society in which the narration is contextualized. The first one will be the unexpected and surprising irruption of the doctor, Pedro Recio, next to the Manchegan governor in accordance with the new status that medical practitioners have reached, close to powerful positions in Spain. The second one, aimed to perceive the social stratification that explains and places us within the right context to understand both the spoken words and the governor's work in his ephemeral regency in the island.

There is a theme of loneliness in all Camus’ works in any form. Camus is one of the writers who wishes to show the reader the weight of loneliness and isolation. Loneliness can be pleasant or unpleasant, but the man always longs to escape it. The basic question is whether this loneliness represents a positive or a negative meaning. In the present study, we try to show the theme of loneliness in the outside world in the works Enjoyments, Summer, and Exile and the Kingdom. This theme in Camus’ works can show the most diverse experiences, descriptions, phenomena, or ideas. It is sometimes represented in the desert, a distressing nostalgic place, a place of disorientation of exile, or sometimes in the modern world in cities, where they retrace the erasure of the landscape. But this solitude can also be pleasant in the Mediterranean region, rocked by the warm colors of the sun or in the islands, a place very rich in images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article covers the analysis of the concept of space in Sylvain Maré - chal's play Jugement dernier des rois [The Final Judgement over the Kings], writien during the French Revolution. The action of the play takes place on an island which serves as a prison, first for the enemies of the monarchy, then for the enemies of the Revolution. The idea of the prison island, a place of punishment and evilness, breaks with an utopian concept of an island being a sanctuary and the source of happiness for a perfect society (Thomas More). It envisages the history of the XIXth century and the fortunes of Napoleon at Saint Helena as well as the story of Edmond Dantès presented in a famous novel The Count of Monte Cristo writien by Dumas. This paper aims at reading Hergé's major work in the light of Sloterdijk' s theory of spheres and Agamben' s reflexions on adventure in order to examine the place and function of the island in the adventures of Tintin, a hero without insulation. Much attention is given to the boundery topology of adventure in our discussion of the ontological transitions (human, animal) taking place on the threshold between in and out and of their anthropogenetic significance. We defend that every adventure story is a variation on the anthropogenetic one, and that Hergé and Sloterdijk diverge on the matter of island and insulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the most characteristic features of the Scandinavian prose romances. The contrast between the translated and original chivalric sagas is illustrated on the Norwegian translation of the Song of Roland and on the late Icelandic re-working of Tristan. Our aim was to explain the changes in the context of the Old Norse culture as well as literary conventions. The Old Norse translations were partially shaped to satisfy the expectations of the target audience unused to the genre. The dissolving courtly ideals in the late-medieval Icelandic tradition are, according the author, rather similar to the development of the late German Artusroman than purely a sign of Scandinavian incomprehension of the concepts.

To evoke the selection of a place such as an island in the novel implies establishing three distinct levels: referential (generally, the reference is to Robinson), textual (re-writing is involved where the island appears as through a palimpsest), and conceptual (there is something of an idea in the nature of islands as there is something of an island in the nature of ideas). This, in turn, entails three separate approaches: geographic (insular space stricto sensu), geo-poetical (fictionalization of the insular space), and geo-symbolical (allegories linked to the essence of an island). Jean-Luc Coudray’s Les deux îles de Robinson, John Banville’s Ghosts and Stig Dagerman’s Island of the Doomed have it in common that they de-realise the island, enhancing its metaphorical and metaphysical dimensions. If the island is the locus for the novels it relates to, it is because the image it carries is interiorised by characters who are human islands within a hostile world where reality and fiction are indissociable and where the island, as if mirrored, en abyme, or concanated, reaches the outer limits of its representation.

In Christian Gailly and Christian Oster’s novels, the island is depicted through a double approach, consisting of resorting to the stereotypes associated with insular territories in Western imagination, while displaying their limitations. By accepting the precept of the impossibility of apprehending the territory, these novelists invite us to reread the island through a movement of recognition of the world, advocating a look through the prism of its fixed and traditional representations.

The heart of our reflection is about what innovates scientific creativity. How are new ideas born? How do they germinate and when ? Can dreams provide the researcher with scientific material of interest? And if so, in what ways? This text is based over a thirty-year period, of a geographer’s experience, most specifically on islands and archipelagoes. He is also a practiced dream writer. There is a continuity and a permeability between daytime and nightime dreaming, and a kind of porosity from dream to scientific innovation. The “island dream prism” nourishes our imagination.

A thirteenth century Arthurian Romance, so far unknown, has invented a new island to propose a new version of the legend of King Arthur. The protagonist’s ancestors shipwrecked and settled on a wild island they called Non Sachant Island. As for the protagonist, he leaves his native island to go to King Arthur’s court, where two bad fairies force him to pursue an illusory dragon. Throughout the story, Non Sachant Island is a distorting prism through which the islanders perceive the outside world and vice versa. This article decode the imaginary in the representation of this island, the social organization of its inhabitants as well as the reasons for this insular choice offering the author a margin of freedom in the tradition of Arthurian literature.

The article refers to the situation of relative backwardness of the economies of the Caribbean area, based on the changes introduced by the development of the digital economy, which has deepened the heterogeneity of productive structures at a global level, widening the gap in the technological frontier of developing countries. The process leads to a deepening in the productivity of the small economies of the Caribbean, whose heterogeneous sectoral structure and low level of savings limit the ability to create labor demand over the destruction of jobs that implies change.

The Oran coastline is a remarkable region cited as a hotspot of plant biodiversity (Véla & Benhouhou 2007). Plane island is the third largest island after Habibas and Rachgoun islands in the Oran region but is less studied. A botanical assessment of Plane island was undertaken in spring 2016. We carried out several phytoecological surveys. We collected and identified ten species in eight families: Chenopodiastrum murale (L.) Fuentes, Uotila & Borsch, Crithmum maritimum L., Cynomorium coccineum L., Frankenia cf laevis L., Limonium pescadense Greuter & Burdet, Malva arborea (L.) Webb & Berthel, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L., Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum L., Senecio leucanthemifolius Poiret subsp. crassifolius, Suaeda vera Forssk. Ex J.F.Gmel.
