This exploratory paper focuses on Rome's Stazione Termini, a large railway station and a site of mobil-ity and marginalization. Termini represents a microcosm of contemporary urban challenges, character-ized by development pressures and the ongoing exclusion of homeless people – most of whom are migrants. The article begins to explore the concept of ‘whiteness’ as manifested in both physical de-sign and social control of the station. The station's sanitized aesthetics and emphasis on commercial activity evoke a normative white/Italian/European identity, alongside general policing strategies and re-stricted access that creates a hostile environment for many. Drawing on scholarship on public space and race, the paper highlights the historical roots of exclusion in the station, tracing Termini's fascist-era origins and its ongoing role as a node in migration routes through Europe. I finish by positioning Termini within a wider European context, where railway stations serve as contested spaces grappling with commercial interests, urban development, and the needs of marginalized populations. It calls for further research into the policing of public spaces and the experiences of minoritized groups within them – and building on the work of Sara Ahmed, keeping complaint alive.

Drainage and imbibition at low to moderate capillary number, are very important phenomena, in which the SCAL data are derived. In this venue, there is an increasing trend to apply computational fluid dynamic models at pore scale to extract the required parameters for multiphase flow study. Before applying these methods, their abilities to capture the real performance of fluids at the pore scale with corresponding capillary numbers should be validated. Moreover, due to the dimensional difference from pore to core scale, rigorous statistical methods are required to successfully extract the corresponding SCAL parameters. Hence for any model, before constructing any SCAL data via digital methods, validation at the pore scale along with the investigation of the possible effect of the dimensional change from pore to core scale are significant priorities. In this study, the performance of interFoam, a solver for immiscible two-phase flow from OpenFOAM, at the pore scale is evaluated. An image of the pore doublet system is digitized and meshed with different resolutions to capture the contact angle movement. The average pore diameters are different, and the pore diameter pathway varies. The experimental results are extracted from an article, which extensively performed the tests for different imbibition and drainage regime on this pore doublet system. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis on mesh geometry, refinement near boundaries, and contact angle is conducted. The drainage simulation and experimental results in the pore doublet system are in good agreement with each other. As expected, the displacement happens in the larger diameter and bypasses the wetting fluid in the narrow constriction. In imbibition, the displacement first takes place in the smaller constriction and then the wetting phase starts invading the larger diameter pore. From the sensitivity analysis, it is concluded that the instability of the front is mainly related to the slip condition at the walls. Moreover, the spreading of wetting film near the wall is prevalent at very low contact angles. The results show that the solver can predict the flow behavior in imbibition and drainage on the pore doublet system and the results are comparable with the experiments.

Les organisations confessionnelles jouent un rôle de plus en plus important en matière de coopération pour favoriser le développement international. De nombreuses institutions internationales reconnaissent ces organisations comme de précieux partenaires, déclarant qu’elles ont « contribué à valoriser la foi » dans leur propre action. Mais qu’en est-il vraiment et comment ce phénomène s’est-il produit ? Cet article s’attache aux activités de la Banque mondiale pendant la période 1995-2005 lorsque, sous la direction du président James Wolfensohn et de Katherine Marshall, alors directrice du Development Dialogue on Values and Ethics (DDVE) rattaché au groupe, l’institution a entamé des relations avec une sélection d’organisations confessionnelles. Il analyse ce qui a poussé la Banque mondiale à s’intéresser à la cause religieuse et pourquoi cet intérêt a soudain disparu. La raison principale de cette adhésion à la cause religieuse tient au fait que les résultats des précédentes stratégies séculières s’étaient révélés décevants. A cela s’ajoute le sentiment que la religion a joué un rôle positif dans la lutte contre la pauvreté. Cependant, des divergences de vues sur la pauvreté et le développement ont divisé les Etats et les institutions religieuses, sans compter que certains représentants de l’Etat ont continué à se montrer suspicieux envers l’intervention de la religion dans les affaires publiques. Il s’en est suivi l’échec de la collaboration.

Faith-based organisations (FBOs) have increasingly become important actors in international development cooperation. Many international institutions recognise them as valuable partners and declare to have ‘mainstreamed faith’ within their own activities. But is this really the case? And how has this happened? Focusing on the activities of the World Bank in the 1995–2005 period, when, under the leadership of President James Wolfensohn and Katherine Marshall, then Head of the Bank’s Development Dialogue on Values and Ethics (DDVE), the institution engaged with some selected FBOs, this chapter enquires into the reasons for the Bank’s interest in faith as well as its sudden disappearance. It argues that the main rationale for engagement with faith lay in the disappointing results of previous secular strategies and the feeling that religion had a positive role to play in fighting poverty. However, diverging perceptions of poverty and development between states and religious entities, along with lingering suspicions among state officials about dealing with faith in the public realm, derailed the collaboration.

After reviewing a representative sample of current and historical research in religious fundamentalism, the author addresses the epistemological presuppositions supporting both quantitative and qualitative methodologies and argues for epistemological flexibility and metamethodology, both of which support and are supported by metatheoretical thinking. Habermas’ concept of the scientistic self-understanding of the sciences is used to point up the limitations of positivist epistemology, especially in the context of fundamentalism research. A metamethodological approach, supported by epistemological flexibility, makes dialogical engagement between researchers and those they research possible, and an example of how this would look in an actual research design is provided. The article concludes with a theoretical statement and graphic representation of a model for dialogical engagement between Western scholars and non-Western religious fundamentalists. Such engagement, the author argues, is necessary before any real progress on the “problem” of radicalized fundamentalism can be made.

Organic cotton and/or « fair trade »: a real future or just a passing fashion? Fair trade and organic cottons can be presentedas 2 of the solutions to the current cotton market crisis; fi rst, because their price can reach 20% above market; secondly becausetheir cultivation and transformation contribute to the sustainable development of the production countries. Actually, organicand fair trade standards demand a drastic reduction in the use of chemical pesticides while encouraging the implementationof social concerns and the creation of development projects. At the global level, only small quantities of fair trade and organiccotton are produced. The market for this cotton is a niche market, so small in fact; that the issue of whether this type of cottonhas a real future or is only a passing fashion that will soon disappear can be raised. From a sociological perspective we can tryto contribute to the debate by considering that the market for those cottons is « constructed » and by paying attention to thesociotechnical networks that allow the production and the marketing of those cottons. We argue that consumers are the centralelement of these networks. This gives to the consumersʼ expectations and to the norms that guarantee organic or fair tradequality a key role for explaining changes in the networks and market perspectives. The paper is based on 2 research works. Astudy of Belgian consumersʼ expectations for sustainable « jeans » (2003) and a study of the dynamics of fair trade which waspartly based on Indian fair trade networks and group work with consumers (2005). The situation in India is very different fromthe African one. However, because of an important integration of both networks, the Indian case can raise questions that arealso relevant for the African networks. Among them, we wish to underline the importance of socio technical devices that allowthe existence of the long term commitments which are necessary for the survival of fair trade and organic networks.

While there is growing recognition of the value of community-based alternatives to detention in the US, shortfalls in funding and political will are hindering implementation of improved services and best practice.

'Resilience' is a term that has achieved significant prominence in scientific circles and now within popular discourse. However, its practical application is often unclear or confused because it can mean different things to different people: To resist? To adapt? To transform? In this paper, we propose a framework - System Viability - able to coherently engage with six distinct properties of all systems, from ecosystems to communities, allowing the identification of trade-offs and synergies for maximising the chances of systems persistence. We apply and evaluate the System Viability framework through participatory visual methods within three indigenous communities in the North Rupununi, Guyana. This paper highlights how the framework allows the measurement of community survival strategies in a consistent and theoretically corroborated way, with implications for national and international policy-makers aiming to promote resilience and sustainability.

A number of factors that contribute to its expression are examined: the place of the Decalogue in the life of Israel, the stipulations for proper Sabbath observance, and the reasoning and motivation that lie behind its keeping. Additionally, various facets of human life that mark the seventh day of creation are connected to specific terminology within the fourth commandment. The article concludes by arguing that the Sabbath commandment in Exodus, properly observed, is a picture of the seventh day of creation and that a desire to recover that situation motivates its keeping.

This paper presents lamps and selected vessels from Mahmudia. The pieces discussed come both from recent excavations at the site of Salsovia and from a collection held by the village school. The paper begins with a discussion of the written evidence for the site of Salsovia, before offering a brief summary of the archaeological investigation of Late Roman activity at the site. The citadel on the promontory west of Mahmudia, Tulcea County was known in the Roman period as Salsovia. Prior to 2004, the site had not been the focus of systematic fieldwork; all knowledge of its history came from ancient sources and chance finds. Among the latter, the most important role was played by the inscriptions, which have been published on several occasions, very often with contradictory interpretations. One theory based on a particular interpretation of the epigraphic sources was that of Vasile Pârvan, according to which Salsovia was abandoned after the defeat of Emperor Valens at Adrianopole. This paper, briefly discusses evidence from the 2004 and 2007 excavation seasons and reviews published epigraphic evidence from the site and its vicinity. The latter includes a military diploma from A.D. 97, three further inscriptions dated between the 2nd and 4thcenturies AD, and a tile with a funerary text from the 5th or 6th century. Several ceramic finds and coins from the local school collection were also published in the past. Project funding from the British Academy and Ivy Primrose allowed three stages of the research to be completed, in 2003, 2004 (two seasons) and 2007. Institutul de Cercetări Eco-Muzeale provided research support, laboratory space and storage facilities. The first stage of the project was the topographic survey of the site, including both the citadel and and the wider settlement, undertaken in 2003. This work provided the necessary framework for finds collection and both magnetometry and resitivity surveys. The 2004 and 2007 excavation seasons witnessed the opening of four trenches, two inside the citadel and two on the extra mural area to the west. Despite the fact that most of the surface of the site was badly damaged by previous disturbance, several buildings and a segment of the city defensive wall were identified. The upper levels investigated at Salsovia are clearly dated by the finds in the 4th-6th centuries, invalidating the theory that claimed that the site was abandoned after the Adrianopole disaster. All of the archaeological finds published in this article: tableware, stamped decoration ceramic, cooking ware and lamps are of Late Roman date. Coins from the Mahmudia school collection are published here as well. Archaeological investigation thus enabled the team to address a range of issues that had previously only been the subject of scholarly hypotheses, such as the extent and character of the late defences and absence of evidence for settlement on the site after the 6thcentury. The evidence suggests the abandonment of the site at Salsovia occurred sometime in the the late 5thor 6th century after a massive conflagration. Evidence for this comes in the form of a burnt layer across all parts of the site archaeologically investigated to date. In his discussion of the lamps and selected ceramics, Florin Topoleanu suggests that this destruction may be linked to the events of A. D. 559, the invasion of the Cutriguri tribe. Their invastion has been associated with burnt destruction layers at Halmyris. The value of comparing evidence from the the two neighboring sites from Salsovia and Halmyris were constantly in the minds of the authors.Other explanations are, however, possible.
