This Photovoice research is situated within a larger study and part of a community-based participatory research (CBPR) partnership, Project Lotus, Hope Together. Project Lotus is a collaboration that began in early 2021 with a network of women’s shelters, women with lived experience of homelessness, and academic scholars in Montreal, Quebec, working towards a broad goal of co-creating supports for women post-shelter stay. Underpinned by a critical feminist lens, the aim of this research was to uncover what helps and what hinders women in their transition from shelter to housing. Using Photovoice as the participatory research method, seven women in Montreal with lived experience of a shelter stay and post-shelter transition to their own housing were interviewed over a 6-month period in 2021. Five key and interrelated themes emerged as central to their experience and process in their transition from shelter to home: 1) Shelter as a safety net; 2) Living with trauma; 3) Moving beyond survival to find meaning in everyday life; 4) Connecting and contributing; and 5) A home. Our findings demonstrated that, while moving into their own living space post-shelter marked a new beginning for the women, it was a beginning filled with various systemic and structural barriers. Our findings also suggest and align with recent literature reviews that there are broad systemic inequalities for women related to housing, gender roles, and poverty. Sustainable wrap-around supports and policy changes using rights-based, systems, and trauma-informed approaches to support women post-shelter are urgently required.

Introduction: Homelessness is associated with a variety of stressors, including safety concerns, and uncertainty about the future as well as stigmatization, that can lead to or exacerbate pre-existing physical and mental health issues. This study explores the association between stress, hope, stigmatization, and social support among youth experiencing homelessness. Method: Quantitative, cross-sectional survey data were collected on n = 100 youth between the ages of 18 - 29 (60% identified as men, 28% as women, and 10% as transgender/gender diverse) experiencing homelessness in New York City. Result: Transgender or gender-diverse youth reported lower levels of hope and social support compared to the rest of the sample. Additionally, participants identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) reported higher levels of professional support than heterosexual-identifying participants. Further analysis revealed a correlation between longer length of homelessness and less perceived social support. Finally, the association between discrimination, stress and hope was weaker for respondents with higher levels of social support quantity and quality, respectively. Conclusion: The results suggest that social support is an essential protective factor from both street-based stress and discrimination. It is vital to facilitate adequate support to youth experiencing homelessness, especially for the gender-diverse youth who report lower levels of hopefulness.

Built for Zero (BFZ) is a new data-driven approach to allocating housing assistance to homeless households. BFZ implementation includes the production/maintenance of a “by-name list” (BNL). The BNL is a regularly updated spreadsheet with personalised data about everyone who enters and exits a local homeless system (i.e., flow). Local administrators use the BNL to produce “by-name data” (BND). BND lets administrators monitor and manipulate system flow in “real time.” Scholars have not analysed how administrators manage their BNL and produce BND. This paper starts that conservation by answering three questions with interview data that was collected from administrators at 28 “BFZ communities” (i.e., homeless systems implementing BFZ): How do administrators manage their BNL? What factors influence BNL management? How does BNL management affect BND accuracy? Using thematic analysis, the author provides evidence that administrators manage the length of their BNL by removing “inactive” clients who have disengaged from service providers. Administrators try to verify housing status before deeming someone inactive. The verification process is shaped by social policies, network ties, virtual interactions, and administrative discretion. Because those things vary across homeless systems, administrators face different constraints and enablers whilst verifying someone’s housing status. The intersection of contextual factors and subjective processes biases the BND administrators produce from their BNL.

Why do some cities provide many emergency shelter beds while others do not? We interpret differences with respect to the supply of shelter beds as originating from alternative choices concerning a series of policy trade-offs. These trade-offs arise because of climate effects, prejudice, levels of poverty, and housing and labour market conditions affecting the rates of homelessness. Governments have policy levers they can adjust to respond to changes in most, if not all these conditions. One of these policy levers is the number of emergency shelter beds that are made available. But other policy responses are also possible. These include efforts to reduce poverty, policies designed to increase the stock of affordable housing, and policies to increase income support payments. Choosing to supply shelter beds over other policy responses reveals a preference for one set of societal outcomes over another. Using data describing conditions in 52 Canadian cities, we test six hypotheses describing why some communities choose to provide more homeless shelter beds than others.

Les jeunes lesbiennes, gais, bisexuel·les, trans, queers, bispirituel·les ou autres (LGBTQ2+) vivent davantage d’instabilité résidentielle que les jeunes cishétérosexuel·les. Si ce constat est bien connu, la variation des expériences d’instabilité résidentielle au sein des jeunes LGBTQ2+ reste moins documentée. Cet article présente une démarche intersectionnelle quantitative pour explorer les variations dans le vécu d’instabilité résidentielle auprès d’un échantillon pancanadien en ligne de 2266 jeunes LGBTQ2+ âgé·es de 15 à 29 ans. Les modèles de régression logistique réalisés sur les croisements du groupe racial avec l’identité de genre ou l’orientation sexuelle révèlent que les positions minorisées sur les axes du sexisme, du cissexisme, du monosexisme, du binarisme de genre et du racisme/colonialisme étaient davantage associées à un vécu d’instabilité résidentielle. Ainsi, les jeunes trans autochtones et les jeunes pansexuel·les autochtones étaient les plus susceptibles d’avoir vécu de l’instabilité résidentielle, alors que les hommes cisgenres blancs et les jeunes monosexuel·les blanc·hes l’étaient le moins. Aucun effet d’interaction multiplicative et additive n’a été observé lors de combinaisons d’un groupe racial avec une identité de genre ou une orientation sexuelle, suggérant que les impacts individuels de ces positions sociales sur le vécu d’instabilité résidentielle ont tendance à se cumuler sans toutefois s’influencer mutuellement. Ces résultats comblent une lacune dans les écrits scientifiques et peuvent informer les instances décisionnelles afin de prévenir l’instabilité résidentielle chez les jeunes LGBTQ2+.

The purpose of the qualitative research study was to identify factors and challenges that led to insecure housing among rural residents in Manitoba, Canada. Using a case study approach, five participants and two key informants were interviewed. When the participants were asked about personal factors and challenges affecting housing insecurity in rural Manitoba, their responses were focused on past and current health issues. Health, including acute and chronic conditions, became the critical intersection of housing insecurity and rurality. Systemic barriers such as invisibility, stigma, and lack of access to healthcare services in the rural setting created additional challenges for participants who required assistance and support to obtain and maintain stable housing. Integration of and collaboration among health, housing, and social service providers and informal supports in the rural community are required to address housing insecurity. Rural communities tend to be unique, therefore, strategies and interventions to diminish or prevent houselessness need to be flexible, targeted, and community-specific.

At the beginning of the 2000s, the field of biotechnology saw the emergence of a new multidisciplinary field, that of synthetic biology. It consists of genetically modifying microorganisms, by combining molecular biology with genetic engineering and computer tools. What conception of life underlies these practices and innovations? Among the main ones, we find that which assimilates living things to a machine. This result comes from a survey carried out among around forty people working in the field of synthetic biology. In order to account for this machinic vision of a “programmable living organism”, the article first addresses the playful nature of this activity. Such a conception of life is more broadly linked to an evolution in biology granting a large place to mathematics and computer science. This movement towards “programmable living” ultimately reflects an increase in the instrumentalization of living organism.

In the wake of the global bio-hacker endeavour to appropriate biotechnologies for one’s own ends, this article looks into the relation of bio-hackers to living materials. My aim is to contribute to the discussion on living materials by perusing their technical existence as they appear in the form of biotechnological life (BL). At the crossroads of science studies and critical theory, the article builds on a discourse analysis of interviews conducted with bio-hackers, mostly Canadian. The analysis highlights the mode of existence of BL according to three main figures: the bio-hacker imaginary of a BL, conceived as the common bio-infrastructure of bio-hacking, synthetic biology, and bioeconomy; the challenge that biological normative purposes offer for the materialization of BL; and the creation of an unequal, often circumstantial, distinction between life forms that participates in the social legitimation of the mode of existence of BL.

The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is a promising alternative to reduce the need for insecticides against mosquitoes and agricultural pests. However, its implementation in France is difficult because the existing sociotechnical system is not yet compatible with this innovation. The use of SIT would imply rethinking and building a new pest management paradigm. This article studies the different organizations between humans and non-humans that characterize the stages of development of SIT inside and outside of the laboratories, from the birth of the insects to their possible commercialization. This article shows that the implementation of SIT requires a stabilized organization between actants such as sterile insects, scientists, farmers and residents, public actors, wild insects, and firms. As there is not yet such organization, SIT is developed by scientists trying to guess the needs and expectations of future users: these anticipations highly influence the sociotechnical choices made by researchers inside and outside the laboratories.

Since the end of the 20th century, the imaginary of living being reducible to its genetic information has been a decisive factor in the generalization of biotech considered as a set of new innovation practices associating the academic and industrial worlds, particularly in the medical sector. This article suggests that there multiple socio-technical imaginaries of the living that could be used to adapt the biotechnology innovation model beyond the medical sector. Based on the trajectory of a scientific and economic project aimed at getting microorganisms to produce a small molecule between the early 1990s and the mid-2010s in France and North America, this article argues two things. Firstly, it describes how the notions of platform molecules and metabolic pathways are at the heart of a biochemical imaginary of the living, updating an ancient vision of the living that has been erased by the rise of genetic engineering. On the other hand, the article shows how certain properties of this biochemical living are mobilized to adapt the biotechnology model to the industrial chemistry sector and to new territories.

The first French clinical trial using human embryonic stem cells for regenerative purposes was launched in 2014, using the I6 stem cell line that was imported from Israel. From Israel to France, national reproductive policies and practices inform how basic scientists produce, manage and circulate cells across countries. Building on an interdisciplinary co-production involving two social scientists and a life scientist, this article suggests that biobanks passage cells from in vitro fertilization to stem cell science and from country to country by modifying their reproductive meaning. Four passages are described: the absence of cells in 2005 when the research started in France; the presence of supernumerary embryos available for research in Israeli IVF biobanks; the production of the I6 stem cell bank in Israel; the importation and laboratory biobanking of the cells in France. Human embryonic stem cell lines can never be completely disentangled from reproduction.

The article explores the anthropological challenges of governing the living matter, particularly the collective ability to reach consensus in the regulation of genetic diversity. Based on European controversies related to recent plant selection techniques, it aims to analyze divergences in understanding biological stability. While disagreements between what is considered natural and what is not play a role in the perception of how to care for the living matter, the tensions remain structured by its inherent complexity. Several implicit conceptions of biological preservation and biodiversity coexist. Thus, the fragile governance of the living matter stems from differences in representations of what sustains it, rather than the announcement of a disruptive innovation. As a singular non-human actor, the living matter leaves traces that are irreducibly controversial.

The theoretical movement known as New Materialism, which emerged in the early 2000s, saw not only the return of ontology, but also the affirmation of a materialism in which all oppositions and contradictions would dissolve. New Materialist trends take the agency of non-humans, as suggested by Haraway and Latour in particular, a step further, and come to regard all the material components of our societies as active agents endowed, to varying degrees, with a form of vitality. In this essay I return to what I call the “ontologism” of New Materialism in relation to vital, mechanistic and dialectical forms of materialism, commenting on authors such as Jane Bennett, Karen Barad, and Elizabeth Grosz.

This article focuses on an artistic know-how that manifests itself in the manufacture of a type of traditional cage called the Sidi Bou Saïd cage. It covers the techniques used to create this object, mentioning the different stages of manufacture as well as the materials and tools used. It also shows the significant aspect of the cage which becomes a cultural symbol and an identity support. In fact, a cage can be an object rich in art and history, by imitating certain traditional architectural and craft components. Loaded with cultural specificities, the cage indicates a place of memory, where the Mediterranean mixes with the local, reflecting respect for human cultural diversity. The work will attempt to clarify the functioning of this object in identity recognition, based on field data as part of an ethnographic survey enriched with historical and anthropological indications.

Based on an empirical research on tourism platforms, this article aims to shed light on the transformations generated by “digital labor” in terms of social identity and the construction of the person, from a perspective that crosses sociological approaches to the processes of subjectivation at work in neo-liberal capitalism on the one hand, and anthropological approaches questioning the links between economic transactions and personhood on the other. The article shows that work on the “dividual” sheds light on the mechanisms by which platforms contribute to the creation of “partible” persons, the result of ever-increasing porosity between the personal and professional spheres, and of a system that demands a high degree of personalization in market relations.

Synthetic meat or the production of edible animal tissues in vitro, addresses major concerns such as climate change, animal ethics and human health. This article explores its epistemological specificity and its impact on our conception of human and non-human life. Cellular meat, derived from cellular agriculture, questions living materiality and its appropriation via technoscientific means. We analyze the ontological status of cellular meat through the technical recomposition of life, characterized by the process of biofabricating “meat,” thus revealing the material production of new forms of edible biological matter. A critical analysis of neo-materialism illustrates the limits of this materiality and its social implications, specifically on the relationship with animals and rural communities. By examining prospective discourses and semantic shifts surrounding cellular agriculture, we question the promises and imaginaries associated with cellular meat.

In 1948, Norbert Wiener presented Cybernetics as a “word invented to define a new field of science”, which would strive to understand the functioning of “control and communication in machines and living organisms”. From a cybernetic perspective, the living body was conceived as a “cybernetic system” interacting with its environment through continuous feedback loops. Understanding how these information loops function has thus become the key to understand how living systems adapt and persist in global environments mutating ever more rapidly. For a growing number of biologists, the loop has emerged as a “universal symbol of how life works at all of its scales and levels”. The cybernetic loop, however, is not only an epistemological figure (through which life is being thought in striking new ways); it is also a technology of power, projecting new ways of governing and directing living process at multiple scales. Cybernetics has recently given rise to cybergenetics: a new area of research aimed at “synthetically regulating cellular processes at the gene level”. Focusing on the recent history of this emerging discipline, we consider how the confluence of cybernetic theories, genome sequencing machines, targeted mutagenic techniques, and artificial intelligence is informing new conceptions of molecular life and speculative futures of biopolitical control.

The loop is a powerful form, both in symbolic an in functional terms, which is reflected into a myriad of different applications, from religious and mystic symbologies such as the ouroboros to corporate branding and design such as Apple’s Infinite loop. To respond to loSquaderno's invitation to write about the concept of loop, I chose to look at it from the perspective of participatory planning, which is currently the field where I have the opportunity to apply concretely most of the competences I aquired through my eclectic career. Tesserae is the organisation that I co-founded with Laura Colini in 2011 with the goal of combining the academic background and the capacity gained as experts for European policy programmes along with the experience as artists and activists investigating and questioning transforming cities. Within its general scope, a core ambition of the organisation has become the systematisation and integration of a large collection of tools and methods deriving from diverse approaches and needs into a comprehensive toolkit for participatory practice. This led to the elaboration of the wide purpose conceptual framework for analysing and designing transformative processes that we heve called “framework for change” (F4C). This model visualises the fields, variables and activities required to produce a desired change through a process of cocreation. The elements of the process can be seen as an array of discrete components, analysed independently, which are often assigned as specific responsibilties to different stakeholders in the process; nevertheless, what makes the quality and capacity of the process to achieve positive impacts is the relation among the parts, their correct consequentiality, complementarity and integration. In this article I want to argue that the loop shape is the essential pattern to arrange the elements of the process in an effective and functional relation, and provides, both for organisation and communication purposes, a key source of inspiration to enhance positive change throughout complex multistakeholder projects. In the following, using the loop as a guiding shape for my reasoning, I will firstly briefly introduce a theory of change and illustrate the terms of the process design that it calls for; secondly I will present the Frame4Change scheme created by Tesserae as a tool for visualising transformative process; third, I will develop some reflections on the establishment of recursive cycles (loops) as ideal arrangement of the different actions needed to achieve the desired change.

The article would like to sketch a cross-section of contemporary riots as a practice that can be analyzed through the category of destituent acting, intertwining this understanding with the concepts of loops and circularity. The parallelism between the two lines of analysis can be declined in several senses: cybernetic (Curcio) and algorithmic (McQuillan, Galloway, Rouvroy) capitalism is based on a performative and retroactive circularity-described since the dawn of cybernetics (Wiener)-that consolidates through its operation the identities and subjective embedding that data are supposed to describe; the circulation of commodities and subjects within preformed environments (Foucault) is one of the constitutive features of contemporary capitalism (Clover), which simultaneously produces spaces of surplus and surplus with respect to this circulation; sovereignty is based on an ontological-political structure based on the presupposing threshold (Agamben) that projects as the origin the result of power. Revolts, understood as destituent action, undermine the exercise of all three of these loop functions: opacity and devastation of control devices deactivate the performance of data or inflate it to dissipation; blockage, irruption on the public scene and habitable condensation of life forms jam the circularity of the biopolitical or imperial metropolis; the threshold that places anarchy and civil war at the mythical origin of the sovereign order is belied in the actual deposition of government, which does not resemble the presupposed mythical image.

Most social media platforms – including TikTok, Instagram and Facebook – have adopted video formats as their preferred way of engaging users and generating content. This contribution argues that not only social media video platforms create algorithmically determined feedback loops, but that these platforms conversely form a ‘loop of loops’. Each platformised loop connects to the others through processes of translation and transformation, where the infrastructural logic and the aesthetic grammar of the platform combines with the one of the video loops. The emergence of a ‘loop of loops’ breaks with the previous text- or image-centred approach to social media content. In order to understand its appearance and functioning, the ‘loop of loops’ must be contextualised in what Kornbluh (2024) has defined the style of Too Late Capitalism, that is immediacy. From this, it derives that the ‘loop of loops’ requires a constant overflow of media and production, which is functional to the compulsive, quick-paced, potentially infinite and extenuating doom scrolling. The contribution then concludes by reflecting on the frictions and leaking which enable micro-forms of resistance against the loop of loops.

This contribution asks whether it is possible to imagine a research project without falling back into the loop that seems to characterize it in essence. Firstly, I present an analysis of the concept of "project" and show why that profoundly marks the research in general. In particular, I refer to an essay by Cacciari (1981) and one by Heidegger (1966). Subsequently, I reveal how, during my PhD, I did direct experience of what the two authors discuss about. Therefore, a possible strategy is suggested for not being enslaved by the project's aporias at the scale of a doctoral research. Following the example of some feminist scholars, one can indeed resort to "figuring". Such a method consists of offering a vision starting from a becoming. Thus, it entails for the PhD project to be placed on the being-able-to-be ground. Namely, not to be structured as a hypothesis about an object. Rather, the research project should propose in itself and start from a hypothetical object to be continuously confronted with social practice.

The following article is the result of a research project that explores the experiences of individuals who fought on the front-lines of the George Floyd uprising. Combining participant observation with in-depth interviews, this work analyzes why certain individuals developed strong attachments to the riots of the George Floyd uprising, even despite differences of strategy, ideology, and biography. Emphasizing the role of direct experience, I argue that a key appeal of participation in these events was the opportunity to engage in subjectively meaningful forms of collective action. This was especially important in the late spring of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the human population and transformed how we experience everyday life. In a context of widespread uncertainty and social paralysis, the George Floyd uprising gave people an opportunity to engage in group actions which they understood as valuable in themselves, creating an experiential loop through which they could enact principles of bravery, virtue, and dignity – in short, an ethics of revolt. Far from being a marginal aspect, I argue that this generative loop – and its ability to circulate within a crowd – was a crucial determinant for why riots and rebellions happened in some American cities in 2020 and not others, even when those cities had similar background factors.

How are we commanded and how does creativity arise if algorithmic and classification systems are pervasive in the world in which we live? I will try to answer this question by briefly tracing the history of formal calculus techniques in mathematics and the development of informatic machines. It is the very grammar of these machines that demands to represent their products as data that pre-existed their collection, obfuscating their constructed character of . I will try in this text to dispel the myth of a purely circular operation of algorithms by analyzing what remains outside the loop.

The paper is focused on Bastogi, a housing complex which started as temporary housing for university students and travellers but that become a permanent reality for many individuals experiencing severe housing deprivation. It is highlighted the looping effect, in referring to how classifications such as “squatter” and “people in housing emergency” shape individuals’ perceptions of themselves, or how they can also perpetuate the victim-blaming ideology. The temporary housing assistance policies in Rome have chronicled housing precariousness for a significant portion of the urban population, and a place like Bastogi is a product of these urban policies. Like a heterotopia of marginality, Bastogi is a ‘counter-space’, whose existence denounces the segregating logics that created it. The paper also describes the constant struggle of some people in housing crisis to distance themselves from the imposed labels, and how they navigate this social, moral, and political distance from institutions and the rest of the city.

The most widely promoted exemplars of the circular economy tend to reflect a neoliberal socio-climatic imaginary in which sustainability performance and financial performance go hand-in-hand. Reflecting on the case of Kalundborg Symbiosis in Denmark, this essay borrows Hofstadter’s notion of the ‘strange loop’ to think about the relationship between the radical potential of circularity vis-à-vis the conservative, business-friendly practices of the circular economy. It argues that corporations have a vested interested in maintaining the strange, appropriative loopiness of the circular economy and suggests that the way to break out of this loop is to attend explicitly to the social, political, and ecological contexts in which circularity is conceptualized and enacted, rather than the narrower, dominant focus on its technical and financial dimensions.

This article is part of a greater adventure in exploring and, especially, designing alternative ecologies of funding and other decentralized autonomous organizations (or DAOs). This speculative design work has led to the creation of The Sphere (www.thesphere.as), a regenerative commons for the live arts. Incidentally, when trying to visually represent some of the Sphere’s choreographies of value, the diagrams tend to take the shape of generative vortex, or, as we like to call them, synthetic swirls. In the context of this article, I propose to take this visual logic of the swirl a little further, and, keeping up with its economic incidences, spiral off on a tangent that eventually leads me into the idiotextual surrounds of Bernard Stiegler’s late work (and hopefully back).

The gender gap in adolescent mental health experiences is notable, with gender adding an additional layer to the already complex experience of being a young person who is experiencing homelessness. Yet, research in this area is limited. The purpose of this qualitative, interpretive description study was to understand how gender shapes the mental health of youth who are experiencing homelessness in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada. Eleven young people between the ages of 16 and 24 were recruited from a youth shelter and participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis and Gender-Based Analysis Plus was used to analyze the data, and findings revealed four contextual factors that appear to influence a young person’s mental health while homeless but that is experienced differently depending on one’s gender identity. These factors are: (1) housing acquisition is challenging, (2) physical presentation is meaningful, (3) cleanliness and hygiene are expected, and (4) utilizing mental health resources is complicated. Additionally, the many strengths that the youth identified and demonstrated in navigating their circumstances are highlighted in the results. These strengths involve (1) exhibiting resilience, (2) expressing the ability to survive, (3) imagining a world that is better, (4) articulating their needs, and (5) drawing on their social connections. The gendered lens that guides this study provides a challenge to the homogenous way that young people experiencing homelessness are often portrayed within the literature. Intersecting identities that include gender and age need to be considered within the mental health-related experiences of youth who live with homelessness. Ensuring that interventions are tailored to meet young people’s specific gendered needs is both a matter of human rights and health equity. Practical implications for service providers are discussed.

Trauma-informed care (TIC) benefits to service users and providers are increasingly acknowledged across various health and social care settings. TIC can potentially increase service user engagement, prolong shelter placements, and lessen staff vicarious trauma and burnout. However, studies documenting staff experiences and/or the implementation of TIC are scarce. This limitation has prompted calls for more grounded and applied research into trauma-informed practice, tracking implementation in practice, staff perceptions, barriers, and organisational change. This study aims to address this gap and is an ecological, mixed-methods evaluation of the efficacy of TIC training in a female-only homeless shelter. Quantitative data included 132 incident reports during the first yearly quarters pre- and post-training, hypothesising post-training reductions in incident numbers and severity. Using expansive thematic analysis, semi-structured interviews with six shelter staff (n = 6) explored employee views of TIC relative to trauma understanding, incident management, and integration in practice. Findings revealed a marginal increase in incident numbers and a statistically significant reduction in incident severity post-TIC with a 50% reduction in calls to emergency medical services (EMS). Participant accounts of working practice pre- and post-TIC uncovered increased trauma understanding, increased confidence and competence, healing relationships, and enhanced self-care. Findings are discussed with reference to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s (2014) trauma-informed framework and Yatchmenoff et al’s. (2017) core questions in evaluating TIC. While these results are significant as one of the first evaluations of TIC training in Ireland, limitations and implications for future research and practice are considered.

Although Takatāpui/ lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, questioning, plus (LGBTIQ+) people are over-represented in homelessness statistics, there is limited qualitative research that explores the enduring effects of homelessness once they have attained housing stability. Using data from eight semi-structured interviews, we explore life after homelessness for Takatāpui/LGBTIQ+ people in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Results show the long-term ramifications of homelessness, stigma, and shame about having experienced homelessness, participants’ desire to “turn their lives around,” and their experiences of supporting others. These findings show that experiencing homelessness influences people’s lives long after they are housed.

Background: Homelessness is a rising crisis that affects hundreds of thousands of individuals in America; but affects women differently than men. The experiences women face while homeless can translate into traumatic experiences and profoundly shape an individual's story of homelessness. These experiences prompt a need to change the systems that contribute to homelessness. Purpose: This study aims to highlight trauma across women's experiences of homelessness. Methods: Data collection for this research was conducted through qualitative interviews with eight women experiencing homelessness in Modesto, California. NVivo, a qualitative data analysis software, was used to format the interviews, identifying common code words that developed into overlapping themes. Results: The eight interviews of women experiencing homelessness identified core emerging themes of causes of homelessness, fear of loneliness, quality, and type of available services, perception of homelessness, and an understanding of the societal constructs of homelessness and gender. This research confirmed that some women experiencing homelessness are less likely to report traumatic experiences and seek support from their local social service community providers. The limitations of the smaller sample size only captured a small scale of the problem being analyzed to a potentially larger issue. Conclusion: Services should begin focusing on asking more trauma-informed questions, not only to improve care but to allow more women experiencing homelessness the chance to seek help; this is the only way to begin understanding how their traumatic experiences have impacted their livelihood.

Background: Homelessness is a global challenge affecting both high-income and lower-income countries. While survival is a priority, when assessing rehousing programs, thriving should be a goal. There is, however, a lack of clarity around the concept of thriving in existing literature, as for example it is used interchangeably across a number of professions. Aim: This paper provides an in-depth concept analysis of thriving, with a specific focus on thriving post-homelessness. Method: Walker and Avant’s (2011) concept analysis method was utilized. Results: As a result of this concept analysis, eight defining attributes were identified, including bio-psycho-social-spiritual improvement, adaptive coping styles, a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction across multiple life domains, functional well-being, improving or achieving a high level of performance, finding meaning in life or life activities, and having the necessities of daily living. It was found that thriving is a multidimensional process with subjective and objective components as well as an outcome, which all contribute to an individual's well-being and satisfaction. As a consequence of thriving, one feels more secure and confident and an enhanced sense of belonging. Conclusion: This concept analysis includes an updated definition of an individual's thriving post-homelessness in order to allow for comprehensive measurement in the context of housing research, including a positive assessment of one's life situation across multiple domains, as well as access to basic necessities such as shelter, food, and clothing. Future research can utilize the results of this concept analysis to explore thriving within the context of housing, especially to establish a well-structured housing program for persons exiting homelessness.

L'article étudie les problèmes rencontrés par les femmes, qui rendent l'espace public moins accessible pour elles. Nous avons effectué une enquête par questionnaire à partir d'un échantillon de 481 usagères de dix espaces publics, de typologie et de caractéristiques différentes, de la ville de Chlef (Algérie).Il ressort que les femmes, notamment les plus jeunes, avancent les mêmes problèmes d'accès à l'espace public : avant tout les problèmes concernant l'appropriation de l'espace public, puis les contraintes en relation avec leur perception et enfin les obstacles d'accessibilité comme facteurs importants agissants sur l'usage et la fréquentation de cet espace public.

La gestion des instances sportives à Bamako est dominée par les hommes, avec des femmes occupant souvent des postes à connotation féminine. Cet article examine les facteurs contextuels et dispositionnels qui ont favorisé cette sexualisation des postes. Nous avons analysé les listes des membres des bureaux des fédérations sportives sur 20 ans (2002-2022), mené des entretiens avec trois présidentes et distribué des questionnaires à 30 présidents et 80 femmes membres. Les résultats montrent une grande disparité : 3 femmes présidentes contre 30 hommes, et 83 femmes membres contre 901 hommes. Nous avons observé divers modes d'entrée pour les femmes, avec des postes souvent limités à des rôles socialement définis. ,

L’inscription du site des palais royaux d’Abomey sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial et la Liste du patrimoine en danger en 1985 a succédé à la création du musée historique dans les palais des rois Guézo (1818-1858) et Glèlè (1858-1889) en 1944. L’objectif de cette recherche est d’analyser le cadre institutionnel de gestion et les instruments en jeu pour assurer la gestion efficace du complexe musée-site. L’approche méthodologique utilisée est la méthode active de recherche participative (MARP). Ainsi, les entretiens sont réalisés avec le personnel du complexe musée-site, le directeur de l’office du tourisme d’Abomey, quelques visiteurs et membres des communautés. La double identité des palais royaux d’Abomey est à l’origine de ses problèmes de gestion efficace. Autant les outils de gestion font défaut que le personnel affecté est inadéquat.

Employée dans la pharmacopée, les rites religieux ou cultuels, la céramique, art du feu, fait partie des découvertes majeures de l’humanité. Depuis sa découverte jusqu’ à présent elle joue un rôle important dans plusieurs régions Ivoirienne, dont celle de Brobo, en pays Baoulé. C’est dans cette optique, que notre attention s’est portée sur la commercialisation de la céramique à Brobo. Cette étude constitue un moyen de montrer comment la céramique contribue au développement socio-économique de la communauté. A partir d’une analyse des sources écrites, des données ont étés collectées auprès des potières de ladite zone.

Cet article examine la réutilisation des coquillages fossiles et décrit en même temps les anomalies ou les déformations observées sur les individus. La démarche adoptée repose en effet sur une combinaison de plusieurs activités allant de la recherche documentaire à l’examen du mobilier coquillier, en passant par les enquêtes ethnographiques, la prospection et les fouilles archéologiques. Nos fouilles effectuées sur le site de Balloum, près du village de Moundé (basSaloum) ont mis au jour des spécimens coquilliers déformés ou réutilisés le plus souvent en des objets de parures ou d’ustensiles. Le Ranch de Gibier de Nazinga est caractérisé par une gouvernance centralisée, dirigée par l'État à travers les services forestiers. L’article vise à développer un modèle de gouvernance inclusive et durable pour le ranch. Il part de l’hypothèse qu’une réduction du pouvoir décisionnel de l’État au profit des institutions locales limitera les impacts environnementaux et socioéconomiques négatifs. La méthodologie adoptée comprend une revue de littérature, des entretiens individuels avec les institutions locales et des groupes de discussion dans les villages riverains. Les résultats montrent une implication structurée des villages riverains et privilégient une approche ascendante de la prise de décision.

Le Burkina Faso est un pays impacté par le changement climatique. Face à ce changement climatique, des stratégies d’adaptation sont développées par les éleveurs afin d’atténuer ses effets. L’étude vise à recueillir les savoirs locaux en matière de conduite des bovins au pâturage par les éleveurs de la zone pastorale de la Nouhao. Une exploration documentaire, des enquêtes individuelles et une grille d’observation ont été utilisées pour collecter les données. Les résultats indiquent que les éleveurs ont une bonne maîtrise d’exploitation des ressources alimentaires et d’abreuvement à travers un calendrier annuel bien établi.

La prolifération des déchets ménagers solides constitue un problème réel dans la ville de Ndjamena. L’objectif de cette recherche est d’analyser les facteurs de prolifération des déchets et de proposer les recommandations. La méthodologie s’est basée sur les enquêtes de terrain et la recherche documentaire. Les résultats montrent que les facteurs anthropiques et naturels sont sources de la prolifération des déchets. Il ressort que 25% des ménages enquêtés jettent leurs déchets dans la rue et 5% dans les caniveaux. Le rejet des déchets pollue l’air, l’eau et le sol. La valorisation des déchets atténuerait les risques environnementaux.

L’écrivain-onomaturge baptise ses personnages et ses cadres à qui il assigne des fonctions bien précises. Cette façon de nommer les personnages s’observe également dans les œuvres littéraires béninoises. Les noms de personnages, dans la littérature béninoise, convoquent le fantastique comme si l’onomaturgie était au service de celui-ci. L’objectif de cette étude est de partir de la sémantique des noms des personnages dans quatre œuvres béninoises pour déduire l’aspect fantastique.L’analyse des noms choisis montre qu’ils sont au service de la promotion et de la construction du fantastique dans leurs œuvres.

Le discours publicitaire est resté pendant longtemps un sujet de prédilection pour certains chercheurs, et plus particulièrement les linguistes. En effet, les publicitaires usent de stratégies pour toucher le consommateur et l’amener à l’achat. C’est pourquoi, il y a la présence de certains phénomènes comme l’alternance codique issue du contact des langues qui inondent désormais le discours publicitaire. L’objectif de cette étude est de décrire ce phénomène, à travers des messages publicitaires. Et pour rendre compte de cela, il nous a fallu constituer un corpus à partir de spots publicitaires recueillis auprès de la radio Savane FM. Par ailleurs, la transcription de ces messages audios nous ont permis de déterminer trois types d’alternances codiques.

La présente étude aborde l’épineux problème d’autonomisation des femmes en milieu rural dans la Commune de Biankouma. Ainsi, elle se propose d’évaluer l’impact de la contribution économique des femmes sur les ménages. La méthodologie s’est basée sur la recherche documentaire, l’observation directe, l’enquête par questionnaire et la méthode d’inventaire. 300 femmes ont été choisies de façon aléatoire. Les résultats montrent que 77% des femmes sont agricultrices ou commerçantes. 51% des femmes gagnent en deçà du SMIG (48 000 FCFA) contre 49% qui perçoit en moyenne 100 000 FCFA. Dans un contexte local de rareté des opportunités économiques, la coopérative Tchérégnimin de Korhogo (Région du Poro) s’est investie dans l’exploitation du karité. À cet effet, elle a développé une solidarité organique structurant ses activités. Cet article analyse la construction de l’autonomisation de ses membres à travers la mobilisation de la ressource collective. L’approche mixte, s’est traduite par l’entretien, l’observation et le questionnaire, auprès de 71 membres, et a questionné le système d’entraide subsumant la chaîne des valeurs du karité. Les résultats montrent, avec la théorie du capital social, que Tchérégnimin favorise une économie sociale solidaire, qui soustrait ses membres à l’invisibilité socio-économique.

Le Burkina Faso, à l’image d’autres pays de sahel traverse une crise sécuritaire et humanitaire sans précédent provoquée par des attaques de groupes terroristes et autres conflits exposant les femmes et les enfants à des multiples risques et dangers. S’inscrivant dans une démarche mixte, le présent article vise à analyser l’impact de la crise sur le quotidien de la femme déplacée interne. Les résultats de la recherche montrent que les déplacements de population ont renforcé le patriarcat et les violences basées sur le genre. La crise a engendré des stratégies d’adaptation en termes de réorganisation du travail dans les ménages.

Cette étude analyse l’influence de l’autonomie motivationnelle en planification familiale (PF) sur les violences faites aux femmes déplacées internes. Sur 1250 femmes, 81,6% sont en union, 79,2% sont non instruites, 90,7% sont musulmanes, 49,5% vivent dans la pauvreté et 72,4 % sont sans activité économique. Parmi elles, 56,6% ont une faible autonomie motivationnelle en PF et 16,6% ont subi des violences dans le ménage. Les femmes avec un niveau élevé d’autonomie motivationnelle en PF ont 40% moins de risque de subir des violences. Des actions pour renforcer cette autonomie sont nécessaires pour garantir leurs droits sexuels et reproductifs.

M’bratté, est en dégradation. Pour éradiquer cela, des règles ont été mis en place. En dépit, la transmission reste un problème. L’objectif est d’identifier les raisons des modifications de l’héritage. Pour ce faite, une approche qualitative avec des entretiens semi-directifs et le guide auprès des traditionnalistes, des autorités, des catégories dans un village M’bratté dans la sous-préfecture de Songon ont été mené pour apprécier les pratiques culturelle en voie de perdition. L’échantillonnage à choix raisonné fut utilisé. La taille de l’échantillon est de 100 personnes. Les résultats ont montré que l’organisation politique et activités socioculturelles sont en voie de perdition.
