Cultures of sharing and collaboration are essential to supporting instruction practices, yet there is limited literature on how these cultures are successfully cultivated in libraries. In this paper, I explore cultures of sharing and collaboration among instruction librarians in Canadian academic libraries. I report on a series of semi-structured interviews (n=14) I conducted with librarians who support or provide information literacy at their institutions. The interview data was reviewed using a thematic analysis approach (Braun and Clark 2022) and coded in NVivo. I explore the barriers and supports to sharing and collaboration as documented in the interviews. Barriers include a) instructional silos caused by the liaison model; (b) a lack of trust in sharing one’s teaching with colleagues; (c) the lack of prioritizing instruction in institutions; and (d) limited time to engage in collaborative work. The supports for sharing and collaboration include (a) intentionally building personal relationships, (b) developing a structure for sharing, and (c) having dedicated time for collaborative work. Based on these findings, practical ways sharing and collaboration can be cultivated in libraries will be explored.

This study examined the use of music software as a pedagogical tool for the delivery of specific content in a music education course offered to Certificate and Bachelor of Education Program students at a Caribbean university. The existing course uses a traditional approach, and thus, the study is significant as the results would propel a shift toward transformational teaching. Twenty-four university students were chosen for the study which adopted a mixed methods approach. Over one semester, participants used a free, open-source music software program to learn simple time signatures. Students produced an assignment as well as completed a questionnaire. Ninety percent of students were able to compose eight bars of music according to a simple time signature using the software. Most participants intimated they felt comfortable and motivated using the software, they understood concepts taught, and they suggested its continued use. The majority of participants also stated that they required more training. Some participants even said that they would adopt this methodology on their teaching practicum. Based on the results, recommendations include the adoption of this and other technological teaching tools within the music program, a teaching practicum assessment, and a progressive training component for both students and staff.

Electric vehicles are having significant priority in transportation including goods, public transport etc. among many technologies in electric vehicle, brushless DC (BLDC) motors operated eclectic drives are mostly used. Speed sensorless control is required to implement for obtaining a best performance. At the same time, a sliding mode controller (SMC) can be able to produce the ultimate response under various conditions. Hence sensorless speed control with SMC of BLDC motor is implemented in this paper to drive the electric vehicle. In order to develop speed sensorless of motor, a model reference adaptive control (MRAC) system is developed. However, obtaining a fastest response is very important in electric vehicle speed control. Hence a TS-Fuzzy model is developed to use in the place of conventional PI controllers. Extensive results are collected for presentation by establishing Hardware – in the – Loop (HIL) with the help of two OPAL-RT devices.

Grid connected renewable energy sources based electric power generation systems are increasing day by day to meet the electrical demand without burning any fossil fuels. Doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) are widely used in wind turbines due to advantages that they can allow the amplitude and frequency of their output voltages to be maintained at a constant value, no matter the speed of the wind blowing on the wind turbine rotor. Moreover, the DFIG provides a huge possibility to improve network dynamic behavior by using the power electronic converters with sufficient control arrangements. Many different structure and control algorithms can be used for control of power converters. However, conventional controllers cannot perform with full efficiency during rapid changes in wind speed. Hence, Takagi–Sugeno–Kang (TSK) Fuzzy controllers based novel control technique is proposed in this paper for performing many tasks on grid connected DFIG systems. The proposed control scheme is tested under variations of voltage, frequency, wind speed, and reactive power load. To achieve the realistic responses, the Hardware-in the-Loop (HIL) is implemented with the help of OPAL-RT modules for presenting extensive results.

This review article delves into the strategic integration of renewable energy sources within smart cities, emphasizing the role of electric vehicles (EVs) in ensuring stability. Smart cities, at the forefront of sustainable urban development, prioritize energy systems that are both clean and renewable. The integration of various renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, and biofuels, into the energy systems of smart cities is explored, considering both technical and economic aspects. The rapid adoption of these technologies provides a foundation for a low-carbon economy, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment. However, challenges persist, particularly in optimizing energy systems for renewable integration, stability, operational range, and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, the evolution of smart cities has brought forth advanced energy conservation systems, addressing energy management at both building and city levels. Innovative solutions, such as advanced infrastructure and energy trading strategies in distributed systems, are proposed. The role of EVs in the smart grid is also highlighted, addressing challenges posed by renewable energy’s intermittent output. The potential of EVs to counteract these fluctuations, especially under the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) framework, is discussed, offering insights into future research avenues for a harmonious and sustainable energy ecosystem in smart cities.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to identify whether the incorporation of a combined Patient as teacher (PAT) and arts-based reflection (ABR) program during a surgical clerkship rotation could influence more humanistic perceptions of surgeons, using an innovative evaluation approach. Methods: A novel, single question evaluation tool was created. Third year medical-students were asked to “list the top 5 attributes of a surgeon, in order of perceived importance” both before and after their surgical clerkship rotations and participation in the PAT/ABR program. Attributes identified by students were coded as either “humanistic” or “non-humanistic,” which were then analyzed using generalized linear regression models under a Bayesian framework. Results: After participation in the PAT/ABR program, the predicted probability of students ranking a humanistic characteristic as the most important attribute of a surgeon had increased by 17%, and the predicted probability of students ranking a humanistic characteristic amongst their top three attributes for a surgeon had increased by 21%. Conclusion: This innovative evaluative method suggested the success of a combined PAT/ABR program in encouraging a humanistic perspective of surgery and this approach could potentially be explored to evaluate other humanistic education initiatives.

Resumo O texto aborda a doença no acervo da Justiça do Trabalho de Pelotas, entre 1939 e 1954. Ainda que houvesse uma legislação específica sobre as enfermidades laborais, relacionadas às leis sobre os acidentes de trabalho, que as vinculasse à Justiça Comum, os pedidos na Justiça do Trabalho se referiam a várias questões; contudo, as demandas eram atravessadas pela vivência com o adoecimento. O estudo preocupou-se em dar atenção a processos relacionados às mulheres, já que suas demandas eram, muitas vezes, julgadas improcedentes. Para a observação do material foi utilizada a análise documental, além dos conceitos de cotidiano e experiência. As doenças mais recorrentes foram a tuberculose pulmonar e a sífilis.

This article presents conversations across difference that took place among community partners and researchers at a week-long workshop in T’Sou-ke First Nation territory in 2019. The workshop launched the Four Stories About Food Sovereignty research network and project, which brings together food producers, activists, and researchers representing T’Sou-ke Nation in British Columbia, Wayuu Indigenous communities in Colombia, refugee communities in Jordan, and small-scale farmers in South Africa. We focus here on conversations that highlight global-local tensions in food justice work, the pressures of extractive economy, and pressures arising from climate crisis – challenges that some participants framed at the level of global extractivism and colonial-capitalism, others at the level of the soil. As the conversations reveal, there was more common ground than conflict in shared histories of dispossession, shared predicaments of extractive capital and its government allies, and shared concern to renew and reinvigorate ancestral practices of care for territory.

Abstract Background Skeletal damage is a challenge for laying hens because the physiological adaptations required for egg laying make them susceptible to osteoporosis. Previously, we showed that genetic factors explain 40% of the variation in end of lay bone quality and we detected a quantitative trait locus (QTL) of large effect on chicken chromosome 1. The aim of this study was to combine data from the commercial founder White Leghorn population and the F2 mapping population to fine-map this QTL and understand its function in terms of gene expression and physiology. Results Several single nucleotide polymorphisms on chromosome 1 between 104 and 110 Mb (galGal6) had highly significant associations with tibial breaking strength. Detailed information on the spatial distribution of wetlands is crucial for sustainable management and resource assessment. Furthermore, regularly updated wetland inventories are of particular importance given that wetlands comprise a dynamic, rather than permanent, land condition. Accordingly, satellite-derived wetland maps are greatly beneficial, as they capture a synoptic and multi-temporal view of landscapes. Leveraging state-of-the-art remote sensing data and tools, this study produces a high-resolution 10-m wetland inventory map of Canada, covering an approximate area of one billion hectares, using multi-year, multi-source (Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2) Earth Observation (EO) data on the Google Earth Engine™ cloud computing platform. The whole country is mapped using a large volume of reference samples using an object-based random forest classification scheme with an overall accuracy approaching 80% and individual accuracies varying from 74% to 84% in different provinces. This nationwide wetland inventory map illustrates that 19% of Canada’s land area is covered by wetlands, most of which are peatlands dominate in the northern ecozones. Importantly, the resulting ever-demanding wetland inventory map of Canada provides unprecedented details on the extent, status, and spatial distribution of wetlands and thus, is useful for many stakeholders, including federal and provincial governments, municipalities, NGOs, and environmental consultants.

Neste artigo situa-se a discussão sobre gênero e masculinidades no contexto das suas qualificações e desqualificações hierárquicas da nossa humanidade. Partindo da violência estrutural e estruturante que marca as pós-colónias, como o Brasil, questionam-se as dinâmicas de violências raciais-genderizadas que reproduzem as normas, padrões e pactos imbricados de masculinidades hegemónicas. Desta forma, propõe-se um diálogo com práticas artístico-culturais periferizadas que redimensionam como incorporamos tais idealizações de gênero. Para esse fim, centramo-nos na produção do espetáculo Na Manha – desenvolvido no âmbito da residência artística do projeto de pesquisa-ação GlobalGRACE (Gênero e Culturas Globais de Igualdade), com a Companhia de Dança Passinho Carioca e sob a direção do coletivo de dança Mulheres ao Vento no Rio de Janeiro.

Background: With coronary heart disease affecting over 2.4 million Canadians, annual cardiac and major vascular surgery rates are on the rise. Unrelieved postoperative pain is among the top five causes of hospital readmission following surgery; little is done to address this postoperative complication. Barriers to effective pain assessment and management following cardiac and major vascular surgery have been conceptualized on patient, health care provider, and system levels. Purpose: In this commentary, we review common patient, health care provider, and system-level barriers to effective postoperative pain assessment and management following cardiac and major vascular surgery. We then outline the SMArTVIEW intervention, with particular attention to components designed to optimize postoperative pain assessment and management. Methods: In conceptualizing the SMArTVIEW intervention design, we sought to address a number of these barriers by meeting the following design objectives: (1) orchestrating a structured process for regular postoperative pain assessment and management; (2) ensuring adequate clinician preparation for postoperative pain assessment and management in the context of virtual care; and (3) enfranchising patients to become active self-managers and to work with their health care providers to manage their pain postoperatively. Conclusions: Innovative approaches to address these barriers are a current challenge to health care providers and researchers alike. SMArTVIEW is spearheading this paradigm shift within clinical research to address barriers that impair effective postoperative pain management by actively engaging health care providers and patients in an accessible format (i.e., digital health solution) to give primacy to the need of postoperative pain assessment and management following cardiac and major vascular surgery.

O artigo pretende analisar as formas de trabalho encontradas pelos estudantes da UFPel para complementar a renda, necessárias, muitas vezes, para a sua manutenção na Universidade. Para isso, foram utilizados os conceitos de informalidade e vulnerabilidade social, a partir de autores como Antunes (1999), Pochmann (2008), Noronha (2003) e Castel (1997). A metodologia empregada foi uma análise quali-quantitativa, por meio do lançamento, nas redes sociais, de um questionário on-line via google forms, com trinta e três questões abertas e fechadas. Para a análise do conteúdo utilizou-se o software Excel. Coletou-se 184 respostas, de alunos oriundos de vinte e duas unidades acadêmicas e trinta e cinco diferentes graduações. As respostas, especialmente as abertas, apresentaram as dificuldades com as quais os estudantes vivem, bem como a necessidade de a Universidade mudar, tendo em vista não só incluir, mas fazer com que essas pessoas permaneçam no espaço educacional.

Staff reported paranormal experiences in connection with the outpatient Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) room at the hospital. This case study reports on staff experiences and illustrates how the Ethics team’s role expanded to deal with this novel situation by facilitating an interdisciplinary response.

Los enriquecimientos de mercurio en la unidad de esquisto negro de la Formación ediacárica de Doushantuo son probablemente el resultado de la influencia volcánica o del depósito de mercurio mediante anoxia. Si los enriquecimientos de Hg son de origen volcánico, o se deben a una anoxia regional contemporánea, entonces los patrones de enriquecimiento de Hg son consistentes con la correlación convencional de estas unidades, con las unidades tripartitas equivalentes a la pizarra negra del Miembro IV. An increasingly large number of courses in Canadian postsecondary institutions are taught by contingent instructors who hold full- or part-time positions for contractually limited time periods. Despite strong commitments to advancing teaching and learning, the labour and employment conditions for contingent instructors affect the incentives and possibilities for them to engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Through a collaborative writing inquiry, the 9 authors examine the influences of three key conditions of contingency: institutional knowledge, status, and role; invisibility and isolation; and precarity. Four composite stories demonstrate the ways varied conditions of contingency may play out in contingent instructors’ lives and typically undermine the possibilities for them to pursue SoTL. Institutions present contingent instructors with a mixed message: research and SoTL are desirable and frequently encouraged, yet contingent instructors are often ineligible or hindered from engagement. Dans les établissements d’enseignement post-secondaires canadiens, un nombre de plus en plus élevé de cours sont enseignés par des instructeurs occasionnels ayant des contrats à temps plein ou à temps partiel pour des périodes contractuelles limitées. Malgré les solides engagements pour l’avancement de l’enseignement et de l’apprentissage, les conditions de travail et d’emploi des instructeurs occasionnels affectent les motivations et les possibilités qui pourraient leur permettre de s’engager dans l’avancement des connaissances en enseignement et en apprentissage (ACEA). Grâce à une enquête menée en collaboration, les 9 auteurs examinent les influences de trois conditions clés de ces emplois occasionnels : connaissance institutionnelle, statut et rôle; invisibilité et isolement; et précarité. Quatre témoignages composés montrent les manières dont les conditions variées de ces emplois occasionnels peuvent jouer un rôle dans la vie des instructeurs occasionnels et comment cela affaiblit les possibilités auxquelles ils ont accès afin de poursuivre des activités en ACEA. Les établissements présentent la situation des instructeurs occasionnels avec un message mixte : la recherche et l’ACEA sont des activités désirables et fréquemment encouragées, toutefois les instructeurs occasionnels sont souvent empêchés de s’y engager ou inéligibles.

In this guide to conducting clinical ethics consultation, Bashir Jiwani notes that the success of ethics interventions often relies on the personal skills of the particular consultant involved. Therefore, he wrote this volume to articulate the elements of clinical ethics consultation to help foster integrity in those who may not have these inherent skills. By focusing on fostering integrity, this book provides a fresh perspective and process for how to approach clinical ethics consultation without necessarily having to rely on the teaching of others or the advice to simply do what we have seen mentors do.

A computer simulated, poroelastic, hyperelastic model was developed to replicate the pressure-volume response of a single pulmonary acinus (15th branch of the respiratory tree and daughter branches) with air flow at its core. An internal pressure driven approach was taken upon a small spherical geometry (99.2 mm3 in volume) representing this small segment of lung parenchyma. A reference porcine tracheal pressure at tidal breathing was adjusted from 1471 Pa to 998 Pa to accommodate for pressure drop, and the pressure of 998 Pa was applied to the model for parametric analysis of its pressure-volume characteristics. In targeting a proportional tidal volume change of approximately 15% while also inducing a pressure-volume hysteresis, material parameters of Young’s modulus of 4 kPa, Poisson’s ratio of 0.4, and a permeability of 5×10-5 cm3s-1cm-2 were identified as suitable. The energy loss over a single pressure-volume cycle for a pulmonary acinus was found to be 6.3×10-6 J. This model was qualitatively compared to the pressure-volume relationship of the original porcine data source, and then with experimental findings of the material parameters for lung parenchyma in medical literature, demonstrating same-order agreement.

Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) has become the preferred alternative for ovarian cancer patients who have failed platinumbased therapy, but side effects, such as palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE), may lead to sub-optimal drug exposure and treatment discontinuation. A prospective Canadian multicentre open-label study evaluated the effects of a nurse-administered education and support program on treatment adherence and tolerability in 112 women with recurrent ovarian cancer. Subjects received an average of four four-week PLD cycles, the recommended number of courses required to evaluate the efficacy from PLD. Side effects were common, but 75% of patients were able to complete > 3 cycles and 59% completed > 4 cycles of PLD chemotherapy. With proactive nursing intervention, the incidence of PLD-associated grade three-four toxicities such as PPE and mucositis was substantially decreased. Nursing intervention may allow more patients to receive chemotherapy on schedule, thus reproducing the conditions of the clinical study in which the efficacy of the drug has been established.

La doxorubicine liposomale pégylée (DLP) est devenue l’option de rechange la plus courante chez les patientes atteintes d’un cancer de l’ovaire chez qui la thérapie à base de platine a échoué. Dans certains cas, les effets secondaires comme l’érythrodysesthésie palmo-plantaire (EPP) peuvent mener à une exposition sous-optimale au médicament et à l’arrêt du traitement. Une étude prospective à étiquetage en clair menée dans plusieurs centres au Canada a évalué les effets d’un programme d’éducation et de soutien administré par le personnel infirmier sur la fidélité et la tolérance au traitement parmi 112 femmes atteintes d’un cancer de l’ovaire récidivant. Le traitement moyen des patientes consistait en quatre cycles de DLP d’une durée de quatre semaines chacun, soit le nombre de cycles recommandé pour évaluer l’efficacité de la DLP. Les effets secondaires étaient courants, mais 75 % des patientes ont réussi à compléter plus de trois cycles, et 59 % ont complété plus de 4 cycles de chimiothérapie à base de DLP. Grâce à l’intervention infirmière proactive, l’incidence des toxicités de grade 3/4 associées à la DLP, comme l’EPP et la mucosite, a diminué substantiellement. Il se peut que l’intervention infirmière permette à un plus grand nombre de patientes de recevoir une chimiothérapie selon l’échéancier recommandé, une situation qui reproduit les conditions de l’étude clinique dans laquelle l’efficacité du médicament a été établie.

Staffing changes in the summer of 2015 at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) Library and an increased student enrolment in one of OISE’s core programs meant that the OISE Library would not be able to meet the demand for information literacy (IL) instruction in the fall. A new librarian and two Library and Information Science (LIS) graduate students were hired in early September and had only a short time to learn about OISE’s students, programs, and IL instruction more broadly before designing, delivering, and evaluating IL sessions for graduate students in OISE’s Master of Teaching (MT) program. Recognizing and drawing on each team member’s unique skills and experiences, the OISE Library piloted a team-based mentorship approach to training which enabled the team to collaboratively develop their instructional skills while meeting the goal of a better IL session for its MT students. In turn, this approach provided the LIS student instructors the unique opportunity to gain instructional experience within the library, teaching fellow graduate-level students. This paper outlines the rationale for piloting a team-based mentorship approach, describes the various implementation stages of the pilot project, and explores the ways in which the instruction team incorporated MT student feedback to improve its teaching. LIS students on the instruction team share their perspectives on participating in an instruction team. Des changements de personnel au cours de l’été 2015 à la Bibliothèque de la Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) de l’Univeristé de Toronto ainsi qu’une augmentation des inscriptions à l’un des programmes d’études de base signifiaient que la Bibliothèque OISE ne serait pas en mesure de répondre à la demande de formation documentaire à l’automne. Un nouveau bibliothécaire et deux étudiants diplômés en science de l’information ont été embauchés au début septembre et n’ont eu que peu de temps pour en apprendre davantage sur les étudiants et les programmes d’OISE ainsi que sur la formation documentaire au sens large avant de devoir conceptualiser, offrir et évaluer des ateliers pour les étudiants diplômés du programme de maîtrise en enseignement. En reconnaissant et en tirant parti des habiletés et expériences uniques de chaque membre de l’équipe, la Bibliothèque OISE a mis sur pied une approche de mentorat collective pour la formation qui a permis à l’équipe de développer de façon collaborative ses techniques d’enseignement dans le but d’offrir une meilleure session aux étudiants inscrits au programme de maîtrise en enseignement. Cette approche a donné aux formateurs étudiants une occasion unique de parfaire leur expérience d’enseignement au sein de la bibliothèque tout en formant d’autres étudiants diplômés. Cet article explique pourquoi cette approche de mentorat collective a été choisie, décrit les étapes de mise sur œuvre du projet et discute des façons dont l’équipe de formation a intégré les commentaires des étudiants diplômés afin d’améliorer son enseignement. Les étudiants en sciences de l’information faisant partie de l’équipe partagent leur perspective quant à leur participation au sein d’une équipe d’enseignement.

The Núcleo de Documentação Histórica (History Documentation Center) of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas was founded in 1990, its main goal is to organize the University historical collections, that were spread among its different courses. Over the years, however, the Center has changed its orientation, by adding, mostly, documents that involve the workers world. Three historical collections will be introduced in this article: Delegacia Regional do Trabalha, gathers more than 600 thousand of qualifications, between the years 1933 and 1968, of several cities in the RS; Justiça do Trabalho, that gathers more than 100 thousand processes, between the years of 1936 and 1955; and Laneira Brasileira S.A., an enterprise founded in 1945, in Porto Alegre, and then transfered to Pelotas, between 1948 and 1949.

A substantial corpus of research has been published on Thomas Mofolo since the 1930s. Earlier portraits of Mofolo as a person leave much room for further amplification and improvement. The present research seeks to greatly enhance our understanding of Thomas Mofolo (1876-1948) by using a wealth of archival material, much of which is located at Morija Museum and Archives, and interviews with a variety of elderly informants, including Mofolo's last surviving daughter and other family members. As a result, Mofolo can now be seen more clearly as a person within the context of his large extended family, their antecedents in the wider region, his upbringing and educational formation, three successive marriages, professional life and business operations in a number of different contexts, involvement in political life, and the changing nature of his relationship with the church. The current article focuses on Mofolo's antecedents up until he began his literary career in 1905-6 at Morija, a subject that has received inadequate attention until now. By adding considerable texture to his early life and family history, as well as the historical and religious contexts and currents in which he was raised at Hermon, Qomoqomong and Morija, Thomas Mofolo emerges more clearly as an historical figure. For example, as a boy, we learn that Thomas imbibed a great deal from his father Abner Ramofolo Mofolo, a very hard-working and practically-oriented man, who was himself a gifted storyteller. Given the possibility of pursuing higher studies through the Protestant PEMS Mission, Thomas grabbed this opportunity and came to Morija at a particularly fruitful time during the 1890s, a time of ferment and great expectations. Mofolo, as part of an emerging cadre of "progressive ones" (bahlalefi or matsoelopele), developed his linguistic skills and eloquence to the point where, with the support of colleagues, he could dare to attempt something new, a creative synthesis of various forms of storytelling, indigenous and exogenous, in written Sesotho. His literary output has proved to be of enduring significance, and in the process he became, perhaps inadvertently, the father of the African novel.
